Past nights Anthony showed great knowledge and skills behind the bar and one night readjusted my understanding of the history of the building (which I dig, I love that Shands General store was actually the oldest building in town and I'm glad it's a nod back to that, with brick house stepping out and its' sign remaining on the back of the building) I should say that basically, for the majority, the front of the house is great; Very few exceptions there but they do exist. A while back I had wanted a fresh pasta and to show someone the place, but Shands had beef Wellington on the menu and it's one of my favorites that you really don't see everywhere or splurge for often. So there it was, I knew my order, started with a French onion and short rib soup, but this had ZERO SHORT RIB and was pretty lack luster, & come to think of it, one of the least appealing French onion soups I've had, real unfortunate; the crouton/bread was so deteriorated it was as if it had been sitting in the broth for 2 days. A good French onion really should have the bread floated when broiling the cheese over the top to form a nice crust, instead the crouton was submerged and dissolved as the cheese was just a melty glob of what seemed to be presented more like a mozzarella than Gruyère or Swiss, but it had a sharpness in there I just don't know about this execution I guess... there was a lack of onion, and a lack of flavor, it needed depth which maybe the short rib gives it if "the chef is feeling generous enough that night " to include it. $20 soups for the both of us and only one of the bowls had any of the short rib, unfortunately for them, the douche who likes to post on Yelp is the one that didn't get any. butternut hummus was good... it came out looking like they dropped the bowl on the way over but no big deal My first time in, I had a heavenly, light and flavorful, melt you into a damn puddle, pasta dish; it was the Mafaldine at its best) Really miss those duck wings they sourced locally. Sad story about the local duck farm "Crescent". He had to euthanize his entire population due to a bird flu outbreak, they supplied 4% of the duck to the entire country but sadly had to close down at the end of january; the staff let me know and I had to research it quick. (I imagine this is an issue sweeping the nation as we've all seen egg prices explode) The prep that Shands did on those things... they were next level! Typically you'd think a duck wing would be a little less meat or a bit tougher than a chicken but they did really well making them so tender and heavenly, impressive work honestly; maybe they can pay homage with some other type... I'd try some ostrich wings... it would probably be like a bbq rib or something... I digress. On to the main show, the Wellington... The portion was indeed large, it was a nice cut of meat but this really should have been showcased better. I'm sure the staff at places like this think everything they do is perfect and I'm just a jerk for mentioning my dismay here on Yelp, but they served a beef Wellington where the inside of the puff pastry crust was soggy... the outside crust was cooked but a great Wellington has a FLAKY crust, this wasn't that. At this crazy price your beef Wellington should be perfect or at least satisfying. The rest of the technique on the dish was fine, it had the right stuff which shockingly I've had wellingtons where they didn't do the mushrooms or didn't do the prosciutto layer so I appreciated that. I'm also pretty sure they used Duxelles and cooked them down wonderfully which is an easy step to miss that could ruin everything. Wellington ain't easy to perfect, I myself don't work well with puff pastry and I cannot even make a halfway decent Wellington but in my humble opinion, this wasn't too great either. Overall, would I suggest you go and spend your own $300 on this meal? No. I can't tell you that your money is well spent here. I've been to countless cheaper, nicer, and tastier places that don't have pretension baked into the price. Long Island can be a wasteland sometimes. Good meals I've had here included things like the hanger steak, pasta dishes, duck wings, Brussels and hummus.. maybe even their squash blossoms if I remember right... it's possible that wasn't them though. Unfortunately, our interaction with the manager put a serious damper on an otherwise great evening. We made our OpenTable reservation a week in advance and noted that we'd have our 5-lb Yorkie, requesting outside seating if possible because we weren't sure where dogs were permitted. We weren't being picky and understood it was Labor Day weekend. When we arrived, the hostess explained that our reserved table was inside, so we'd need to wait for a dog-friendly table. She said we'd have priority because we had a reservation. No problem! We got drinks at the outdoor bar and didn't wait long. When another woman eventually seated us, I smiled, said hello and thanked her. She gave me what I can only describe as a dirty look. I shrugged it off, assuming she was stressed because they were busy. Our waitress was fantastic. A busser even kindly offered our dog a water bowl. We ordered drinks and an appetizer and were enjoying ourselves when the woman who seated us suddenly came over, threw water down at the foot of my fiancé's chair and said, "You know your dog is marking up our chairs!" To be completely clear: our tiny Yorkie had urinated on the leg/base of an OUTDOOR chair. He did NOT defecate anywhere. We were eating and hadn't noticed him briefly lift his leg underneath the table. We weren't upset that she told us -- we were stunned by HOW she handled it. Had she simply said, "Excuse me, your dog urinated on the chair," we would have apologized and immediately addressed it. Instead, she threw water beside my fiancé's chair while he was eating and spoke to us in an unnecessarily hostile manner. This is an outdoor dining area at a restaurant that allows dogs, and your own staff had just offered our dog water. If dogs are welcome, situations involving them should be handled professionally. If you don't want dogs there, don't allow them. Our dog is five pounds, quiet and friendly. Other guests and children were stopping by our table to pet him. Had we not already ordered dinner, we would have paid for our drinks and appetizer and left after this interaction. Unfortunately, it didn't end there. My fiancé ordered a filet with a $9 upcharge for hollandaise sauce. The sauce didn't arrive with his steak, so he began eating before it got cold. When the same woman walked by, he mentioned the missing sauce. Instead of apologizing, she said, "Yeah, that can come out later." A $9 sauce ordered for a steak should arrive WITH the steak. He told her he no longer wanted it. She said okay but apparently never communicated that, due to being too busy chatting standing around with others. A busser later brought it and we had to reject it. Our evening cost approximately $200. Expecting our complete meal to arrive together and expecting to be treated respectfully are not unreasonable expectations. I told our waitress about the interactions while making it VERY clear none of this reflected on her. That's when we learned this woman was actually the MANAGER. Our waitress was extremely apologetic, although she had nothing to apologize for. She did her job beautifully, and we made sure to tip her well in cash. That's what makes this so disappointing. This restaurant has a beautiful atmosphere, decent food and phenomenal staff. The person who negatively affected our experience was the person who should have been setting the standard. Yes, customers should be responsible for their pets, and we would have immediately addressed the situation had we noticed. But these are outdoor tables and chairs exposed to birds, squirrels and other animals. The hostile reaction to a five-pound dog briefly lifting his leg was unnecessary. There is a right and wrong way to address an issue. Speak to your customers like human beings. Throwing water beside someone's chair while they're eating and speaking to them disrespectfully is unacceptable. To our waitress and the other hardworking staff: THANK YOU. You were wonderful. Good quality burger I suspect weighing in somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 of a pound. Well seasoned and not too salty. Cooked to a perfect medium so it was good and juicy. I normally do not favor potato rolls but these was good soft bun that other buns should envy. The whole thing with the lettuce and tomato was packed in a clam-shell and even with the 7 minute drive home didn't turn into a soggy mess. While Scheduling may be a bit of a challenge, you can bet I'll be back when the stars once again align.
