Visited this establishment for lunch with my family after hopping off the Port Jeff Ferry. We were in search of a place to eat that welcomed dogs as we were traveling with my Pomeranian, and saw a sign outside the patio that said Portside was dog-friendly so in we went. The lady at the counter (Kelly, I think?) was incredibly friendly, very personable, was happy to chat with my very talkative daughter, gave us recommendations for what's popular to eat at Portside & gave us a great recommendation of a place to get some ice cream after lunch, and even offered us a cup of ice water for my pup. We grabbed a table outside on the patio & ordered our food. We only waited about 15-20mins after ordering before all our plates and drinks came out. Everything tasted fantastic. The fries were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, and my Chicken Caesar wrap was one of the best I've ever had. My dad had cobb salad that looked amazing, sis ordered the portside burger w/ side of onion rings that was really delicious, and hubby & daughter split a chicken fingers basket. We left nothing on our plates when we were done. The food was that excellent. Next time we visit Port Jefferson, we will be back to Portside Bar! read more

This should not be classified as American bar and should be classified as a dive bar. The bartenders are usually friendly. The place stinks like cigarettes inside and out. The food is acceptable, but there's so many other options. Been there a couple times. Always has a trashy crowd and someone gets in a fight. On the plus side I did once get invited to some drunk ladies Halloween party that she has every year in Port Jeff?!? read more

Very good food and service. Kelly the bartender was very good, friendly with the customers, and made good recommendations towards what to eat on the menu. The New England Clam Chowder is very good and loaded with clams. The Calamari appetizer is well prepared, tender, with good flavor. The Ceasar Salad Chicken Wrap with a salad instead of French Fries is good, the salad is fresh and the Blue Cheese dressing is full of chunks of Blue Cheese. Went with a group of 4 around when they just opened up, and it was horrendous. the waiter harassed our friend because she heard wrong and gave her the wrong order; then pinning it on our friend making her cry. On top of that, she wouldn't split the bill, which was possible. later we come to find out she charged our other friend(who paid) $20 extra for a tip we didn't give her. Now they wont call her back about it. this hurts alot because I personally went here the past 2 times and the service and food was great, but now i cant say i want to ever go back. shite place. steer far away. read more

My wife and I decided to take a ride to Port Jeff on a nice sunny day. A beautiful place to visit. We walked around and visited many local shops. Then made a choice to have lunch at Portside Bar & Grill. Upon entering there was a bar on the left a few tables on the right. There were only 2 people at the bar eating and drinking. First we were like, it just looked like a basic bar but my wife had checked the menu online and liked what she saw so we decided to take a chance and dine here. The bartender/waiter, Vinny welcomed us to sit at the bar or table. My wife likes sitting at a table to eat. We sat down Vinny came over with a couple of menus. We liked what we saw. We ordered a diet coke and a club soda, then I decided to get a beer (Blue Moon on tap) Very Good. Since we were by the water on a cold day I decided to start with a bowl of New England Clam Chowder. For Lunch I was torn between the Cajun Chicken sandwich or the Chicken Avocado Hero, our waiter recommended the Chicken Avocado he said it was the best. My wife ordered the Turkey Club. After I finished my soup our food came out a couple of minutes later. The Turkey Club had Sliced turkey breast, bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayo with onion wings, the Chicken Avocado Hero had Grilled chicken, bacon, mozzarella, avocado, lettuce, tomato, and chipotle aioli and side of crispy fries. All of the food was fresh and awesome. My wife and I shared our meals. Our waiter was right, my Chicken Avocado Hero was REALLY AWESOME! Would definitely get it again. My fries were very hot and crispy. My wife's meal was also very good. We were very pleased with our decision to dine here. Our waiter Vinny was polite, efficient and friendly, made us feel very comfortable. Our food was great and prices were very reasonable. All of this made this a very nice dining experience for my wife and I. There sandwiches were plentiful so we took home what was left. Well the first day I went here it was nice and fun the bartender was cool and accommodating. Hand sanitizer avail. If we was going up to the counter we needed a mask of course. Yesterday me and my three friends were going back to have a drink and apps. We didn't even step foot on the property when a very rude waitress said please don't step into the property without a mask. Meanwhile she was outside at the tables with patrons who were unmasked obviously because they were eating. Me and my friends turned around and left and went to Port bistro and pub with no issues. What was the cause of the rudeness? I'd still like to know. I don't want to jump to conclusions. read more

My first time to this typical casual bar/pub joint. We came here for brunch when we visited Port Jeff on Memorial weekend. This place have outdoor seating, perfect for bringing your furry friend to enjoy on a nice day. Food is average here. Four of us shared the giant barvarian pretzel with bacon cheese sauce which was pretty good. Bartender/server was rude on the phone as if a take out order is an inconvenience for her. I get there and she gives me the bill then walks to the back and loudly talks about how "millennials always want takeout and they don't get a taste of my personality" and blahblah. Like I just tipped you 3$ for 10 seconds of work and you're just talking smack about me as I do it. My meal was trash, 3 chicken fingers and soggy reheated microwaved fries for 20$. We were looking to grab a decent bite to eat & for a place that had some inside seating since of course the weather outside was on the chili side. we came in & sat at the tables, no waiter service we had to order at the bar. Drinks started with some beers , the Mountauk beer was good later switched to a Grey goose & ginger ale not bad served in a big tall glass. On the food I had the Avocado grilled chicken with a side salad, very good sandwich, also had the Chicken fries .. these were great nice tasting chicken good with the dipping sauce & not very greasy. Also tried the Fried Mozzarella very good, good with the dipping sauce. Chicken club sandwich & Cheese burgers were good as well. From what I gather this place seems to a local dive bar, not very big, plenty of TV's to catch the games, pet friendly which is so cute to see the doggies just chilling. AVOID THIS ESTABLISHMENT!!! Came here a few weeks back to grab a bite to eat with the fam and meet a buddy for the game.. Service was solid and the food was acceptable. The real issues arose when the owner (Don I think his name was?) started getting involved. While we were waiting for the food I stepped outside to use my CBD vape (which is fully legal, not to mention recommended by my doctor for my IBS). It was just me outside at first but after a minute the owner stepped out to smoke, and when he saw me using my vape he told me I "Can't smoke that s**t here." I tried to explain that it was just CBD and that I use it for my medical condition, but this only enraged him and he snapped that the place was a family friendly establishment and he wouldn't stand for it making the other patrons feel uncomfortable?? Whatever I can always go to my car to use it, but I found it funny that of the maybe 11 people at the place the only family was my own! After the meal my wife and kids left and I hung around to have another cold one with my buddy Ethan and catch the first half of the game. Somewhere around half time the owner tried getting all buddy buddy with me cause I guess he's a fan of the boys too and made several off color jokes I can't bring myself to repeat. As the game progressed I watched him take more shots and throw back more buds than I would in my peak college days. He was cursing, stumbling around and slurring his words, which is all fine and dandy in family establishment I suppose, but g-d forbid I step outside to use my legal CBD vape it'd make them look so bad! **update 12/28/2012** My friends got thrown out of there for "cheering too enthusiastically for the Knicks" This was when they had the Knicks on every TV. They were told "this is not that kind of place" Well your food is not good, your service sucks so it is not like they were going nuts in a fancy haute cuisine restaurant! I was very excited to see that another business opened in the space where Tumbleweeds formerly was, and before that The Backyard. Especially one that has a good selection of beers. Unfortunately the experience I had there was not very good. We went there on a Sunday afternoon after hearing about the owner/chef having a cooking demo downtown. I appreciate people who give back to the community. So we go there and there is nobody there and we walk in to the place. 2 girls are there chatting, and they saw us walking in from a distance, then we walk in and after another 45 seconds or so of chatting, we are acknowledged and sat outside. So we sit outside and are given 2 menus. I suppose I got the "Dinner" menu cause the prices were 2x as much as my wife's! For instance Nachos for $12.99?! The items on the menu were the same too! Wow I sure hope they don't charge that much for dinner because it is not exactly a 5 star restaurant. So we order 2 waters to start while we peruse the menu, they came out like 10 minutes later while the 2 aforementioned employees are chatting in there. The menu was not very large and served pretty much PJ bar fare food. My wife ordered a bay breeze, which came out about an additional 10 minutes later while we were the only people at this place. Drink was reasonably priced at $5.50. The food was OK, but also took forever to come out while again we were the only people there. I wish them well because I like variety downtown, but I would not recommend eating there.. especially for dinner given the high prices I saw on the menu. The service is non caring, and the 2 girls working that day really did not care about much other than whatever they were talking about. Food quality was ok, and like I said decent bar. Will return late night on bar crawl but will not eat there again. The service standard there is very low. read more

Bar Portside is one of the more accessible drinking joints in Port Jeff if only because it is off the beaten path and has an outdoor patio area. Located at the end of an parking lot with nothing else there, they have a good location for the young crowd that calls this place home. We wandered in to have a drink and decide what we wanted to do. Plenty of bouncer action at the entry but overall the crowd is in the 20-something range. Very loud, very young and on the dirty side, the place is made for drinking. No bones about it and no apologies. Not sure about the grill part and really wouldn't attempt it here anyway. Prices were decent, drinks were fine - so depending on what you are looking for this could be a good starting place for your night out. Parking in muni-lots. read more

Throughout our entire time waiting for our food we didn't once see the cook wash his hands or wear gloves. Talk about cross contamination. Portside has a very laid back, relaxed vibe with good eats & good drinks. Portside is cheaper than most bars in the area and the bar food is just as good. Right now as far as Covid goes they have some indoor seating and about 7 tables outside. There's lights outside which is a nice vibe at night but expect a wait if you don't come at the right time because I know for us we spent like 3 hours here but we consistently ordered drinks & food. We got nachos which were a good portion for 2 people. We also got the bbq wings which were the best in the area! I suggest trying the wings, but again good for about 2 people as they're a bit small but for the price they're perfect. We saw the ad in Newsday for the Monday night live music and decided to give it a try. The food was okay nothing great and a bit pricey. We had the Shrimp po'boy and the lobster roll ( wouldn't recommend either) We sat at 6 and ordered appetizers, soup and then dinner. The musicians were setting up at 630 but they didn't start playing until 745. There was a loud disruptive man who was constantly yelling out things and the staff and band seem to know him. First off, how can you hate on a place that has Happy Hour from 2PM-7PM on weekdays? Now, if you're looking for fine dining or the swanky ambiance of the rest of Port Jefferson, I'd say look elsewhere. You want a gourmet burger or free-range-vegan fare? I believe there are restaurants in PJ that cater specifically to your needs -- if you care that much about such matters, you won't be satisfied with this place (or probably any standard-American watering-hole type of place). How one could fool themselves this isn't mostly a bar when they first walk in is beyond me. Here you'll get the standard you-don't-care-if-it's-fancy-as-long-as-it's-awesome-with-beer-pub grub. The food is quite a steal if you go during Happy Hour -- the fried mozzarella definitely doesn't come from the freezer, and if you ask for your wings 'extra-crispy' the chef pulls off some pretty decent wings. Getting half-priced appetizers also helps you buy more of what you really want to come here for: beer. They probably have the best on-tap beer selection in Port Jefferson (although, to be fair, that doesn't take much). They have quite a few local brews, but also things like Arrogant Bastard Ale -- you can't beat that. And of course, the staff is amazing. read more

I'm really happy I found this place. It's tucked away in Port Jeff so you don't deal with all the rustle and bustle of the streets and people everywhere. We sat right outside under an umbrella and had a couple of drinks and some food. It was a really hot day but we still really enjoyed ourselves. We were able to have my friends puppy. The place is dog friendly so naturally the place is already perfect. People do smoke cigarettes around the deck where there are tables and people are eating. It didn't bother me but I think it might bother some people. I liked this place because it had such a natural and relaxed vibe. Some people would get bothered that someone is smoking a cigarette near them but that's one of the reasons I liked this place so much. Very relaxed vibes. Normal humans. Waitress was so nice, wish I remembered her name. The food was simple, to the point, and delicious. I like simplicity and when a place offers that and it's good, well, I'll take that over fancy food any day. I definitely will be back. You can't sit inside because it smells like the bathroom at Smiths Point beach. If you sit outside you are engulfed in cigarette smoke not to mention less than desirable patrons. The waitress was the most pleasant person and We stayed as long as we did because of her but management needs to read the NYS law on designated smoking areas at outdoor restaurants and try to attract a better class of customers. It's just alright. Typical dive bar. They have NO desserts...none, sip, nada! I mean come on throw something together...even though you are a bar. Portside has revitalized the down port area! I stopped dinning down port because the bar and restaurant scene was run down and out of touch with the younger crowd. Since Portside opened I've found my new hang out place. I love the out door seating area. I like to eat outside during the summer months and Portside's out door seating allows me to enjoy the warm summer weather and relax with friends. The food is delicious. I especially love the specialty salad and the mussels. The mussels are in a well seasoned sweet curry coconut broth, each mouthful has a burst of flavor, it's heavenly! read more

I went to Portside with my girlfriend on a Saturday in June for drinks. Seems like a nice place, great outdoor deck which would be good for dinner. Drinks were a tad on the expensive side, but pretty reasonable. Honestly, my girlfriends Margarita was nothing exceptional, but you can't really pass judgement on the place based on one drink. The main attraction of the night was the live music. I'm not sure what the band was, but they were playing some 60s style music. The place was hoppin' -- people were dancing and clapping and having a great time. Mostly an older crowd (30s,40s,50s) with some in their late 20s. My girlfriend and I danced some swing, had a nice time. It's a place we may check out again. read more

My friends and I had a disgusting experience. A woman ran ahead of me sat at the outdoor table that the waiter assigned to us and said it was okay we could join her. Where do I start... The decrepit floor, the terrible service or the fact that I feel like I'm on an episode of cops in the worst area of the US. The vomit in the bathroom made it impossible to use along with the only stall being used by a revolving door of Coke heads. Went on a Saturday, was decent, friendly bartender, older 90's type hip-hop (which may just be a Saturday night thing, I don't know), no chairs at the bar, as they did not want people sitting at the bar I assume. Has an outside deck which is nice in PJ Village, but it's view is that of the parking lot. Not a date place, more of a drink with friends place. If you want a view, there are other, better, options in PJ Village, but all in all this place was fun...worth a try when in the village. read more
