Nicest can be to test drive my car since i was hearing strange breaking sounds. Turns out the parts may not be genuine; therefore it will make screeching noises. Was told to bring back when noises are more audible. I was getting to the point of run away train but in my case car. I've been going here to get my car repairs and maintenance done with Jimmy for the past 5 years. I highly recommend this place, they're really good, fast, honest and reliable. They always take a look at my car and let me know how long I have before I absolutely have to change a part so that helped me out when I was a struggling college student with a part time job. One time I was having alternator problems, but before I went to an electrician to get it diagnosed I couldn't figure out what the problem was. I took it in to Palace several times for them to check it out, but they didn't charge me once since they didn't do any service to it other than drive it around the block to check the battery and what not. I was a little skeptical because of the area it was in.... but I dropped off my car and picked it up two days later. It was a real good deal and fixed my car. I had the engine light on for years but I needed to past smog... "Way" fixed it and now the bmw is running great, will pass smog for sure. He also flushed my transmission fluid, turns out it was nasty and dirty as hell. I also did an oil change, for all that.. was worth the price I paid. I am coming back with the x5, the engine light is also on... hoping he can fix that too!!! Woooo!!!! I had to install my Prius cat catalyst, I called the owner and asked him how much it was. He said if you have the parts it's only $100. It took them an hour which was quick. After looking around several websites and reviews his price was fair. He's even let me watch the installation and let me check underneath my car if there was any minor problems. Shady Dishonest repair shop. They create problems after performing minor services like a basic oil change on your vehicle. Your check engine light will come on and you will return just days later with a new problem on your vehicle. He will simply charge you $300+ to reconnect the part he previously disconnected and tucked under your fuse box. Luckily I didn't feel right about the whole situation and got a second opinion from a different mechanic. It cost me half of what Mr Oai was trying to charge me, but even then it should have cost me nothing because my truck didn't have a problem until Mr. Oai disconnected my EVAP purge hose from the purge valve, tucked it under my fuse box, and then stuck a vacuum cap on the purge valve on my engine. The fact that there was a vacuum vap installed where the hose is supposed to go tells me that this was not a case of the technician forgetting to plug the hose back in and that it was done on purpose to make the check engine light come on so I would return for repairs. This is highway robbery! This man should not be in business. I encourage any customers with similar issues to get a second opinion and if you are being cheated like I was then contact the Bureau of Automotive Repair and they will help get your money back. I will be filing a claim with BAR myself and explaining that another shop found clear evidence of tampering with my emissions device. read more

I called for my oil change, and the gentlemen said they could not see me right now. I was expecting him to say "come by next Tuesday at 8am" when he said "how about in 30 minutes?" I showed up 25 minutes early, he took it right away. Afterward, received bill: $28.50 for 5 quarts of oil, filter, and labor! The gentlemen, Why, and I spoke in Vietnamese for a few minutes, and he told me stories of how he escaped jail 3 times in Vietnam to come to the US. I found my trusty, honest-to-goodness auto shop! My entire family comes here for all of our car needs. I came here multiple times and was satisfied with all my services. I want to recall one incident which contributed to why I think this auto shop is trustworthy. I came in because my SRS light came on, and Jimmy told me there might be two causes: 1. my airbags need to be replace which will probably cost me about $1k 2. it's some electrical glitch and can be fixed if he resets my SRS light He told me it's best to reset the light first and if it comes back on I'll need to replace the airbags. I really appreciated how he told me all the possible causes and not just jump to the cause that will bring in money for him. Plus he didn't charge me anything for bringing my car in to check (this other shop I went to charged me $25 to get my car checked for maybe 10 minutes). Other times I've been here, I noticed Jimmy knows most of his customers at a first name bases - which is another thing I appreciate about this place. read more

I will preface this review by saying that aside from my mother's prized Benz which no one else is allowed to drive (the woman hides the damn keys), my family has always had shitty cars. It's really not an income issue. Really, the only reason we've had so many shitty cars is because my mother is cheap. It's that simple. Case in point, there was that $200 "beater" that my mother purchased from a UCSF student. Not only did this car look hideous with its racing stripes and faux fur seat covers, its passenger doors often flew open when we drove downhill. But I digress. My point in telling you the back story is to tell you that, given our shitty cars, we've worked with many mechanics. Some have made cosmetic repairs but fail to correct the actual issues. Many are dishonest. Palace Auto Services is refreshingly different. Oai (pronounced as "Y"), our mechanic, has managed to coax our cars back to life many a times. He has a great attitude and incredible patience even when we offer lame descriptions of what's wrong with our cars (ex. "something smells funny" or "you know.. it makes that putt putt sound"). He also works within our budgets. He will tell us when we don't need to spend money and how long we can drive our car before we must fix a problem he noticed during his inspection. He also tells you where you can cut some cost, and where you must spend money for car parts. He even matches and/or beats prices for tires and other parts. Better yet, assuming that the problem is identified correctly, Oai's repairs will fix the problem permanently. It doesn't come back to haunt you. I'm the type of girl that takes her car to any auto repair shop that is nearby, very rarely going to the same place twice. The dreaded Check Engine light came on a couple of weeks ago and I was going to take it to a place nearby. They said they could take a look at it, but would charge $90.00 for the consultation and then whatever extra to fix my car. Well, "A" suggested I go to his auto repair shop because they're awesome and they always do a good job. So last Tuesday, we drove over to Palace Auto Services and got there a little before 8:30am (they open at 8am). I backed my car into their shop and Jimmy plugged this little doohickey into my car, turned off the Check Engine light, popped the hood, checked everything out and told me that everything looks fine and it might just be a computer error. He told me to drive around and if the light came back on, to bring the car back. It turned out I was due for an oil change, so I ended up leaving my car there to get my oil changed. I'm usually told that I have to use synthetic oil for my car, but Jimmy said that since I very rarely drive my car (33,000 in over 14.5 years), I could use regular oil without any problems. YES! You didn't charge me for my Check Engine light and you're suggesting I save even more money by not using synthetic oil? Whaaat?!? We ended up coming back around 3:30pm and my car was ready and parked across the street and it only cost me less than $30.00. SCORE! I agree with what everyone else says. They are extremely honest here. Almost to a fault. The only thing bad I would say is that it takes forever for me to get here from my house. It's a looong drive to Cow Palace. read more

Stopped by Palace after my car threw a secondary air injection malfunction code. I had already pulled the code, but wanted to see if there might be something a bit more serious than what I suspected. I was told that it's a minor issue that won't affect performance or function. We can fix it by my next smog inspection. Just as I suspected -- yaay! Earlier that day, I had stopped by another garage and was told that they would need me to leave the car for the day and run the code themselves, at a charge of $110 plus the cost to repair. The mechanic then went on to say that I shouldn't drive the car because whatever is malfunctioning could "fry" my engine. Oh really?! Yes, I'm a woman -- I will believe anything you tell me, kind sir. I promptly drove off hoping Palace would be open and thankfully they were. Palace could have done the very same thing, but they opted to be honest, as always. Their honesty and excellent work is why I bring my cars here and will continue to do so. He knows his stuff, I see him help his guys on almost every job when I visit the shop, and he stands behind his work. He was so honest when I had to come back in for an engine belt that broke after he had just checked and repaired an oil leak. He was quick, fair, and wonderful about the whole thing. This place is a gem and part of me wants to keep this amazing place a secret. But Oai's (pronounced "Why") shop is one of the most honest, quality auto shops I've ever found in my life. IN MY LIFE. And the prices can't be beat. I come here every time I need my vehicles serviced for anything. Once I needed a part replaced on my car and came to Oai to get it fixed. It took about 15 minutes for him to replace the part and he could have easily and rightfully charged me for an hour or half an hour of labor (as many other shops do...they round up by the hour) but instead, he fixed it for free. i have a 2002 volkswagon jetta that after purchasing the car in 12/23/11, a week later the engine light came on&i was incredibly concerned. so we went back to serramonte vw& they gave me an estimate to replace the part @$1600! i was pissed. i just bought the car&i have to pay an additional $1600 just to get it fixed! fast forward 3 months.. my mom referred me to a place her friend brought her vw passat that had an engine light on for awhile. so we decided to go last monday to see what he could do. i dis set up an appointment prior to arriving so that helped too. we arrived&we were greeted by Y (Oai) who was very friendly. he checked the engine, i told him about my transmission rolled forward too many times. he checked the car&told me my jetta has a 2.0 engine meaning the part must come from volkswagon directly. he estimated with labor&parts all together would be $1006! thats a $600 difference! so we agreed and he told us to come back on wednesday morning&he would have the part ready. i came back early wednesday morning around 8&right when i pulled in jimmy (i think thats what his name was) greeted me&i told him what Y told me. he showed me the brand new catalytic converter that they ordered. i asked him if itll be done before 3 as i had to get my bf from work. &he said itll be done by 2-230. i thought thats great. i got a ride from my parents&around 11-1130 Y called me telling me the car was already finished&i could get it. we arrived&my parents paid&i started the car&the engine light was finally off! i drove off and the transmission was much better than before. the gas is also much better, ( the gas would be depleted at a faster rate.) i am so happy with the work Y has done for my car. i will refer him to friends&coworkers if anyone ever has a problem with their cars. First off he made it so easy- he had several cars waiting for me to drive based on the information I have him. Picked mine out, up front and honest negotiations were made, and away I went. Rob does a thorough inspection of all the cars he sells. A couple minor glitches came up that Rob was unaware of- radio wire was bent, side mirror needed looking at- and he immediately said "get it back to me" and fixed me up!!! I hate buying brand new cars as they depreciate so quickly and buying used can be scary- but not if you purchase your car from Rob. Rob is someone you can trust to take good care of you. Not only is the mechanic's name the same as mine (Jimmy) but he's a really great mechanic that's not trying to make you pay anything close to what a dealer would. Not saying that this auto shop is anywhere less skilled/capable of a dealership. They provide the same result with way less the cost, and they don't try to slap on more unnecessary repairs.
