    Review Highlights - Palmers Restaurant

First of all, this is East London and as gritty and edgy as that may be, Palmer's restaurant can only accurately be described as a hidden gem lost among the housing estate and what not.

Overall Trinity Buoy Wharf seems much more cluttered, every inch is covered in shipping containers converted into workspace with cars parked where there was a lovely open space. The art installations now look quite forlorn between the cars. But back to Fat Boy's, a very apt name for a diner serving almost exclusively deep fried dishes. Not really what we were after on one of the hottest day of this hottest summer in human memory. But they also have air con which made them win over the Orchard Cafe on this occasion. We had a smoothie each (not sure how fresh these were, tasted like canned juice blended with crushed ice) and shared a haloumi wrap - a welcome pit stop to tide us over.

My friend Jimmy and I *finally* came here to fulfill a quest for a diner blueberry pie that started LONG ago after a brush with "My Blueberry Nights" and this incident: http://tinyurl.com/yd9cess . And while we *knew* Fat Boys had the pie, it took us a year and his acquisition of a car (mainly his acquisition of a car) before we made it ALLLLLL the way out to the far flung wharf on which this chrome plated trailer restaurant sits. As we got closer to our destination, we were a bit leery of our industrial surroundings and heading into the dodgy alley that precedes Fat Boys we couldn't help but think: "Umm??? Was this really such a great idea?? How do we know this place is still even open?? After all, WHO comes here??? WHERE ARE WE???" But once we arrived, it was *totally* worth it. Okay, so inside it was freezing cold. Okay, so they were out of malt. Okay, so they probably should NOT have carved through that rock hard avocado and charged me 75p extra for the pleasure of picking it off my veggie burger. Okay, so they only had one slice of blueberry pie left (and it was a rather nondescript, soggy, too-long-frozen pie - so actually, we were lucky they only had one) BUT we still liked the place. I mean, isn't all the above what you sort of expect of a retro diner experience?? Really, you're here for the atmosphere: the individual jukeboxes on the tables, the retro vinyl stools, the appropriate plastic kitsch everywhere, the soda fountain drinks, the jump jive music, the fact that you've successfully been transported to another era. If you have a car (or want to spend a fortune on cab fare) I HIGHLY recommend that you make the trek out here for a singular and fun dining experience (hey... the filmmakers of "Sliding Doors" did...). And if you do, tell them that eccentric blonde girl/chinese guy duo sent you (they'll know who you're talking about). Maybe even order the Blueberry Pie - just to say you did.

As Americans, we were interested in seeing the English take on a lot of our classic American diner dishes. I had the chocolate chip pancakes, my sister had cheese fries and macaroni and cheese (she has an intense love for cheese) and our friend had the burger with seasoned fries. I think the best things on the table were the pancakes and the cheese fries. It seemed to be ACTUAL cheese melted onto the fries instead of the fake "nacho" cheese that we get in the states -- even though the fake cheese is also delicious. The macaroni and cheese was a bit dry and in need of a bit more flavor, as was the burger. The pancakes? Awesome. They came out warm, fluffy, topped with a sprinkling of powdered sugar and a side of butter and maple syrup.

At this, they fail. Any Denny's will provide a better experience than this, without the London prices. Some complaints: after asking for sweetener for my coffee, I was informed they only have sugar or agave syrup. I asked for an omelette, and I was informed they were too busy to make omelettes, even though the menu offers scrambled eggs any way you like. How time consuming is an omelette? So I revised my order for 3 scrambled eggs with a side of bacon. They brought out two plates, with 2 eggs on each plate! The service was slow and unfriendly. This might be acceptable if it was a 24-hour diner, and I was there at 4 am with the clubbers and other freaks sobering up for the journey home. It was noon! I sense the people dining here were part of the bleed-over traffic from a nearby Breakfast Club, as there was no queue for a table at The Diner, unlike the competition on a Saturday morning. Apparently, this location is part of a chain. America isn't very popular these days, so these Londoners have a lot of cheek destroying the idea of one of the few good things you are usually guaranteed in the States: a friendly breakfast diner where you can get a bleedin' omelette when you ask! (One positive: they serve bottomless filtered coffee. There is that.)

About the only people you see are neon jacketed workmen on breaks from building up this concrete jungle, bright spots against the grey. But, as I discovered whilst working in a studio in the area, behind almost every wall of its ugly looking facade lies a hub of creativity with the warehouses being home to many artists. At lunch time everyone seems to congregate at the only cafe in the area 'The Wick'. For both artists and builders it's become quite an indispensable institution which is lucky as it's really the only sit-in place to eat around here. This strange mix of wacky art students and bricklayers both have one thing in common at around midday... whatever they've just been working on has made them hungry, very hungry. It's ridiculously cheap and the portion sizes are enormous. So although it is a greasy spoon with the obligatory no-frills atmosphere, people don't come here to enjoy the decor, they come to fill up on a mountain of stodge. Burgers, lasagne, kebabs, jacket potatoes, all-day English breakfasts... take your pick. Most come served with chips, beans and a surprisingly fresh side of salad. You can actually substitute the chips for white rice, but hell, if you're in a place like this then why bother. They have a stalwart selection of English puddings such as apple pie and jam roly-poly, with custard so thick you could use it as Polyfilla. Orange juice is served in pints straight from the milkman. Every time I've been here it's been packed but the Turkish owner and his harem of sweet Eastern European waitresses keep the place running like a well oiled deep fat fryer. It's quite shocking how easily I went from a health conscious foodie to a pie eating fiend, but I thoroughly enjoyed my descent and for the best part of a month I ate some of the best-worst food that exists. And I've got to say, I loved every second of it. It's a good thing that my contract ended and that I live miles away from this place as The Wick is seriously addictive. Definitely the best greasy spoon in London. Um actually, thinking about it, is anyone feeling peckish? I mean it's not that far away, maybe we could take a trip over, like right now???

I love the poached eggs just a tad too vinegary sometimes but they knows what I likes, and how I likeses it. Poached eggs-soft, soft, soft (is what they called me after several visits. They are all very sweet!), with grilled tomato and a bit of black pud covered in economy brown sauce, well remembered. Forget foodie pretensions here, omelettes are the size of small Mediterranean islands, and everything comes with enormous portions of chips, in fact everything is huge and best of all. Well Cheap! It's cute how they serve tea and coffee with the spoon in the mug, coffee isn't great, so go round the corner to the Hackney Pearl, but if the Wick made Turkish Espresso sorta of coffee, this place would be perfect! So if post party, needing a cry or something solid to take an ibuprofen with. Go here. They even have a Facebook page. It's a local rite of passage.

Things were looking promising when I saw a vegetarian breakfast offered in lieu of the traditional English breakfast. I was drawn to the dish because it offered spinach and hash browns in lieu of all the meat in its partner dish. My friend ordered the regular Full English and her dish came out well before mine. I waited roughly 10-15 minutes longer for something that would appear to take less cook time. The plate came out and I noticed there was no spinach. I was not offered a choice as a substitute nor made aware of the situation. Long story short I ended up ordering the Full English and they forgot my black pudding. Waited additional time for that as well. Then they forgot I asked for the bill. Overall, I would not recommend it, especially if you're on a time schedule and multiple mishaps occurred. No cash accepted and 12.5% service charge automatically added to the final bill with the usual VAT.

The formerly industrial area that surrounds the Pearl appears to be teeming with artists who began moving to the area in recent years, lured by affordable housing. If the Hackney Pearl were plunked down in our post-industrial bits back home, already the artists would have been displaced by those who could afford the current extortionate rents. Back to the Pearl: there were picnic tables and benches IN THE STREET at which folk could have lunch, a drink, and a smoke. That's right. It's open air in the middle of the road. Puff away! My pals and I sat closer to the front of the place and had our bevvies: Meantime Stout. Aaaaaah! I love a good stout and a groovy cafe in the middle of seemingly nowhere.
