Came here for the "Chicken in the Rough" chicken lunch. The interior is very colorful and nicely decorated as can be seen in the attached photos. There was a friendly greeting when we walked in and the server came right over to take our beverage order. We ordered the chicken strips and waffles and the chicken was done perfectly. We also ordered the syrup upgrade of pecan honey to drizzle on the fluffy waffle. The waffles were also delicious. There were enough extra chicken strips for dinner later in the day, so it's like getting two meals for the price of one. Go here for the chicken and you won't be disappointed. read more

Our first time visiting here and our family of 6 had a great experience. The atmosphere was clean and had a fun ambiance. It wasn't too pretentious and very family friendly. The food was delicious and the service was friendly and prompt. We have 4 boys and they were all happy with their orders. I call that a success! We will definitely be back in the future. Palms Krystal Bar and Grill was hopping, but I was seated immediately. My server was super busy but also made time to help give recommendations and didn't make me feel rushed. The chicken sandwich and fries I ordered were perfect- ice cold lettuce and tomato with cheese and bacon with crispy chicken. No wonder it's always busy! It's clearly been there forever, and it's also VERY clearly proud of its popular franchised fried chicken operation, which if you read the other reviews, you'll hear is good. And sure, it's pretty good! But the accompanying fries are hilariously bad, and given the focus on fried foods, an odd disappointment. The place was terrible. It was cramped and filthy and gaudy, the service was nonexistent and we were charged an absurd amount. The food was also terrible with the Mac n cheese being soupy and sweet tasting. I hated my food so my boyfriend and I swapped meals only for the chicken to be partly pink. The fries were soggy and seasonless. We also got their mozzarella sticks and they were hard to bite into. The final total for such small servings was $54. I've heard a lot about Palms Krystal and especially their Chicken in the Rough over the years. It's been on my to-try list forever, but I was only finally able to stop by and enjoy a taste on a recent trip to the Thumb. As soon as we pulled up to the parking lot in the back, the smell of fried chicken flooded the car and almost made me start to drool. Certainly a promising start. When we walked in, I found the the restaurant interior to quite retro, giving nice classic 1950's/60's vibes. We arrived just a bit after they opened but there were already a couple of tables filled with people waiting for delicious chicken. We ended up getting two dishes. Traditional Chicken Dinner ($15.99) - The waitress warns you that this dish takes 20 minutes to make since everything is fried fresh to order. Be patient because the wait is worth it. Starting with the exterior, the chicken coating has a good crisp and is pretty well seasoned overall. The interior meat is well brined and quite flavorful. It's just a solid, high quality fried chicken. At first, I couldn't find the wing, but after I dug through the massive pile of fries, I found it underneath. The fries here are fresh cut and fried, lightly crisp, and served unsalted so you can add your own seasoning. There's a small cup of coleslaw on the side, which adds an additional crunch. It's creamy but not watery, and quite peppery to the taste. (5/5) Memphis BBQ Pulled Pork ($11.99) - The sandwich comes with fries, which in this case weren't nearly as good as with the fried chicken. They were kind of floppy and tasted a bit underfried. I guess they just aren't that consistent? For some reason, they decided to pile the fries on top of a pickle spear, which added even more to the sogginess. The sandwich, on the other hand, was a bit better. Per the waitress, the pork is smoked in house. The pork does indeed have a decent smokiness. I found it to not be dry but also not especially moist. It's mixed with a BBQ sauce that is on the sweet side, which I found to be a bit too sweet for my tastes. The amount of sauce is pretty much perfect - enough to cover the meat, but not enough that the sauce starts dripping off. They are quite generous with the pork so you start to encounter pieces flying out when you eat. There's a slice of cheese melted on top and two strips of bacon, which I found to be a bit extraneous. They don't really add too much to the sandwich given the amount of sauced pork. Finally, there's a bit of the coleslaw added on top, and everything is encapsulated in a fluffy onion bun. (3/5) Palms Krystal Bar & Grill is definitely worth a visit if you're in Port Huron. The fried chicken here is top notch and if you stay with that, you probably won't find a better meal in the area. Waffle had the perfect crisp on the outside, while being soft and pillowy in the inside making it a solid waffle. The chicken was out of this world! We both agreed it's the best chicken we've had in a long time. The skin was fried golden brown and it was perfectly seasoned through out. I ordered the pulled pork Mac & cheese which was delicious. I had an amazing iteration of this dish a few yrs back and I've been chasing that flavor combo ever since and no place has ever come close. Palms nailed it! I could have used a bit more of the sauce to help balance the meat/sauce to macaroni & cheese ratio. But outside of that the noodles were done perfectly, cheese sauce was the perfect consistency and the pulled port was top notch. My husband and I ended up sharing both meals because we both loved them so much. I ended up leaving my leftovers in the hotel fridge and I was so upset. My only regret is not getting more chicken. 10/10 we both agreed we'd drive the 3.5 hrs back just to eat here again! The only note on service was our particular server was slow. She was friendly enough but it took 15 mins to get our check and then 10 mins after she took my card for her to come back. When she refilled our drinks they weren't filled to the top and although she checked on us twice it was with other items in her hand and while she was mutlitasking. The other servers seemed to be a bit quicker and helped us with/ containers for our leftovers and answered a question we had on drinks from the bar. Overall the service was not bad, it just didn't match the level of what the kitchen is putting out. Nothing that would discourage us from returning and we've told all the guests it's a must try! This was a great find thanks to a fellow Yelper. A true vintage, old school bar with food that was amazingly good. The best part was the staff. We walked in (mistakenly) through the back of the building near the carryout counter. It's been such a long time since I've been to this place but the last time I was, the food was just amazing. My mom worked here for a while and she always bring home the fried gizzarda and I know that sounds disgusting but as a little kid, I thought they were so delicious. The service was always good.
