STEPH JUDGEMENT: A local landmark worth visiting when in the area. Happened to be checking out the sights in Wonder Valley and passed by this place. Stopped in for a drink and ran into the Wonder Valley Variety Hour, which was a happy raw jumble of a show with local talent, featuring singing, dancing, and skits! Cheap drinks, strong AC, and good times were had. The bartender was super-cool and there's a lot to look at inside and out. Worth visiting even if it weren't the only game in town. read more

We live on the other side of the hi dez but going to The Palms is always worth it.., just had a delicious Sunday brunch mmmm - delish bloody Mary's well made and cheap :/) The biscuits n gravy w/ a side of their amazing sausage was incredible and not too rich or heavy. I may never order anything else there lol. Our table also had perfectly cooked over medium eggs, hash potatoes and the big waffle. All fantastic. The food was good. The service was good. The ambience was good and the music was great! What a cool place!

We stayed a few miles from Palms, which is why we popped by. (Not much is close in Twentynine Palms.) We're normally down for a dive bar and this one was full of Christmas cheer, but the vibe was odd. People were cautiously friendly. Everything was VERY inexpensive, which was awesome. The drinks weren't watered down and they had a decent menu that included a lot of vegetarian options. We tried the Rosie Fries, which were light on toppings, but tasty. The zucchini was really undercooked and soggy though. But the worst part was that everything (including us) reeked of cooking oil. We had to air out our jackets overnight. I wanted to write this review because of all the help and genuine concern from the staff and guests during a medical issue. It's not my first rodeo at the Palms Restaurant. Five stars doesn't always go to gourmet dining places. In my book, places with good and cheap food, friendly faces, lots of seating and wifi take the cake. It's "rustic" here and I love it. A great pit stop, between Las Vegas and Joshua Tree, I always make a point to stop by. The space itself is so incredibly eclectic with absolutely rad staff that love to be there. The front section is the bar area where you can order an incredibly tasty and affordable cheese burger and Bloody Mary, and maybe catch a game of pool. The mid area is set up as a more sit-down eating spot that has a set up for live music. Out back is my favorite. Lots of vintage seating is scattered though out and looks on to a larger stage. When I came, they were doing a screening of some pretty rad, nationally-known emerging artists. The also sell thrift-store like items next to the pool table. I love the randomness of this. I scored a heavy vintage coat for $5, and it will likely be my go-to winter coat this year. I am bummed I missed their Sunday brunch, I heard it is amazing. There's always next time!! read more

Definitely check this gem out when you're in 29 Palms! The food is GREAT and the price is awesome. I had the veggie burger with fries and ordered the fried zucchini. PBR on tap in cold glasses. I got here close to closing time but they still made my order for me and let me chill in the back outside when they closed up. The back has a stage and seating areas everywhere. Would probably look awesome when there's a concert. There's also a stage and more seating in the back inside of the restaurant. There's a random rack of tshirts for sale and books you can buy. Like the restaurant on Facebook to get notices when there's live music. Also highly recommend the Sunday breakfast!! read more

I wanted to update here and talk about the Sunday only breakfast (AKA Church). We got there right at 9 when they opened. It seemed like everyone started wandering in shortly after us and after 15 minutes, everyone was clutching one of Jame's famous Bloody Mary's with the chili flake rimmed glass. Everyone knows everyone here and you will know everyone by the time you get your plate of delicious homemade breakfast! The vibe is very laid back and family style, most folks eat right at the bar :) I ordered the steak and eggs again, because I was craving it. I mentioned previously in this review that the steak and eggs where less than $10 and I will correct that because they are actually $5.50. This includes a nice chunk of sirloin and 2 eggs done how you want, a side of skin on pan roasted russets and onions and a thick slice of french bread, toasted with a smear of butter. They have quite a selection of hot sauces and steak sauces (even HP!), but you will have to walk around and steal em from other folks, or maybe lean over the bar and just grab one! I chose to douse my plate with Sriracha this time and it was heaven. Waylon (my 11 year old) swears by the waffle here, a big fat crispy one for $3.50 and he adds bacon for a buck. Woo Hoo, Gotta love this place! sure it's a little run down, sure it's a little outta the way, but it was someone's magnificent dream! To provide cold beverages and food to hot and hungry desert dwellers at reasonable prices, that's what makes it such a kickass dive bar...well that and the cool Bartender, unusual locals and post apocalyptic vibe. I kept glancing around nervously for Mad Max or some Mutants to walk in and start fighting. JK My friend Sara Jane aka the Wonder Hussy, has it nailed with her description of this rocking establishment. So about all I can add is, that if your ever in Wonder Valley and you see that big old odd Buffalo sign in your window, stop in and say hello and maybe have a nice inexpensive cold one to keep you energized on your travels through the wasteland. I was here for the Ooga Booga swap meet this year, and luckily the dude in the booth next to me was someone I had hooked up with at a bar recently, 150 miles away. Ugh. Guess that is what happens at H.D.T.S. You can buy a 6 pack of pbr here for I think $5 or $6. I haven't ever ate anything here. You can also get beer to go (Yay for construction workers!). Nice to sit in the yard and look at the stars above. Came here for the HDTS event. I am told that the bar is usually very chill. One local said that this bar gets about 3 people max every night, so for it to have 30 people the night we came was probably too much for the poor bartender to handle. Usually in LA I would be irritated at the wait time, but here although it took him almost 15 minutes to get 3 beers (1 pale ale, 1 corona, and 1 non alcoholic), it was so cute how he thought in his head for a good while how much the total would be. When he finally announced the price of "ten dollars," it was almost as if he had overcharged us in his mind to us "tourists" but too bashful to ask for it. We were happy read more

Well, it is definitely way out there, but might the drive be worth it for a nice breakfast in the desert on a Sunday morning ? In a word, no. Here's why: We were NOT GREETED on entering. We were NOT GREETED when we sat down at the bar. We are NOT GIVEN MENUS for at least 15 minutes. It took another 20 minutes for someone to take our orders, which were the exotics of 2 eggs over medium, sausage or bacon, toast and home fries. Another 30 minutes passed and finally we asked someone, anyone to check on our order. When it finally came, the eggs were cold (though done right at some point), the meat was room temp, the potatoes were, oddly, hot. Bottom line? Never again. Apparently, when you are the only eatery/bar around, customer service is not deemed necessary. read more

Dusty little desert dive bar in the middle of nowhere, with a Mos-Eisley-Cantina-meets-Bagdad-Cafe vibe. And when I say "middle of nowhere,' I MEAN middle of nowhere!!! There ain't nothing around but miles and miles of sagebrush and a smattering of decrepit ranches. FABULOUS! They also host live music on certain days...and you NEVER KNOW what you'll see! Far-out freaky shit goes down on that stage...I was there on 3/1/14 and saw an amazing bill featuring a staggeringly eclectic lineup. I partied my ass off and had the time of my life! The energy level, for such a small little dive bar, was through the ROOF! Definitely stop here on your travels if you want to get some local color. It's worth it! UPDATE 3/17: had breakfast here last week, and it was ASTONISHING! The veggie omelette was PACKED with kale and yummy green stuff. WAY better than I expected! What an eclectic, interesting place way out in the desert! Went for Sunday brunch, served our Bloody Marys very quickly. The food was a little behind the drinks, though, but it was good and cheap. The crowd, though! There was a traveling burlesque troupe packing up from the night before, even cleaning up a life sized birthday cake that certainly was used in the act the night before. Where to start. Well, the food is exceptional. My favorite burger used to be Pie -n- Burger in Pasadena, but now it's the Palms. No idea how they make it taste so good. The Palms is so much more than the food and the service, though. The Palms is desert culture. If you want to get a taste of what living here is like, you need to hang out here for awhile. It's not for everyone. A friend of mine complained about the service to me but he likes Denny's. When we go to the Palms we sit at the bar and ask Mary for the order book. We write our own ticket and I go give it to the kitchen. What's the problem? The people that go there are wonderful. The art is wonderful - featuring local desert artists. The music is wonderful, and once in awhile the Sibleys (the owners) take the stage and play. You can get their CD at the bar for $10. Good times! We like this place so much that when we found a house nearby, we bought it! Life's too short to not live near your favorite bar. read more

Better than we hoped for. Wonder Valley home of the freaks and weirdos seems to be a perfect spot for this place. We made the stop on the way back from a road trip out to Amboy. The total old school bar populated by bikers, hippies, crusty old ex military sprinkled with a few foreign tourists looking as though they are just hoping not to get shot. Cheap bar food that was really good. We mixed a chili dog, cheeseburger, home cut fries and a plate of cheese sticks. Four beers and a copy of Man on the Moon and our bill was still less than $25. Pabst, Old Milwaukee, Coors....basically beers for all those on a budget. Everyone was friendly and the decorations were great. Definitely an oasis in the middle of the Hi Desert. read more

The Palms has to be the friendliest place in the desert. This is strictly an oasis for locals who live in Wonder Valley near Twentynine Palms. Like the other reviewer says, don't come here if you want something fancy. And I will say if you are in any way stuck up or uptight, then definitely do not come here... What's cool is that you can get a Pabst on tap, buy a T-shirt for a dollar, (or DVD for $3) all from the comfort of your bar stool! What could be better? ...except maybe meeting interesting friendly locals and eating some of the best french fries you have ever had. You can sit at the bar, in the back, or outside which is good option depending on the weather. I love to come unwind at the Palms with my family and friends whenever I am in town. We always have a good time. There is live music in the evenings, but I haven't had the chance to check it out yet. I heard it's pretty good. read more
