After a long day desert wandering, we spent an evening at 29 Palms Inn Restaurant, and the whole place carries this calm, grounded energy that makes you instinctively lower your voice a notch and settle in. The restaurant itself is simple and inviting, understated in the best way. We didn't have reservations, so we sat at the bar, despite several empty tables giving us that "maybe we could have gambled" feeling. Still, the bar turned out to be a good perch for the evening. Kristin, if I caught her name correctly, was running the universe behind that bar. Mixing drinks, serving dinner, managing patrons, and somehow still staying friendly through it all. Watching bartenders during dinner rushes always feels a little like witnessing Olympic-level multitasking. I was especially excited to order the hearts of palm cakes because hearts of palm were a staple in my childhood home. Sadly, they were out of them. A small heartbreak occurred. I survived bravely. Roadtrip mode had fully turned us into tapas people by then, so we ordered a spread of appetizers and a salad to share. The Inn's famous sautéed mushrooms absolutely deserved their reputation, buttery, garlicky, lemony little flavor bombs. The toasted ravioli with house marinara disappeared quickly, the beet and orange salad was fresh and balanced, and the falafel bites were tasty, though I personally would have loved them just a bit crispier. I enjoyed a couple of Old Fashioneds, and the live music that evening was genuinely excellent. The woman performing had one of those voices that makes you stop mid-bite for a second just to listen. Not bad company for dinner. The only thing I wish they'd improve is accessibility. The atmosphere is wonderfully peaceful, but a bit more consideration for guests with mobility challenges would go a long way in making that peace more inclusive. Overall, we really enjoyed our evening. Good food, good music, strong cocktails, desert night air, and that slow-roadtrip feeling where nobody's in a hurry anymore. read more

So glad we found this place once we were finishing our afternoon at Joshua Tree (near the north entrance). This was one of our best and most satisfying meals in the area. Attached to the Twenty Nine Palms Inn, the restaurant offered more options for different eaters: a few salads, burgers, specialties and sandwiches. High marks for the grunt burger, Porto burger, and fish tacos (not huge) and the oasis bowl was good. Prices were also not exorbitant, likely because the sandwiches and burgers didn't come with sides. They have both indoor and covered outdoor seating. We thought the service would be slow as we sat outside and seated ourselves but it wasn't bad. The server was nice; when our side orders were forgotten at first, it was quickly rectified when we pointed it out. The bathroom was clean and had adequate aeration. They close 4 and 5 pm, between lunch and dinner. It was quiet when we arrived which was a nice respite. read more

We had sandwiches and fries, all good. It's such a pleasant environment and love the history of the property. Always happy to visit even when I'm not staying on site. I don't get the hype of this place at all. I've eaten here a couple times and never been blown away. This last time I got the sea bass and it was more like a trout with how long and thin it was and it had absolutely nothing with it so it was just eating the fish by itself that really wasn't anything amazing on its own. What a cool and quirky place! Rooms are cute cottages. Ours was Encelia with a walled in yard. Our room and the entire compound was very well maintained and tidy. Highly recommend!!! On our recent visit to Joshua Trees, we dined with this establishment for both a lunch and dinner on different days. They have a very nice covered patio and they are also dog friendly. Lunch we opted for the spinach and bacon salad and sandwich. It was nice flavor, however, I like my spinach de-stemmed, but that is just me. Dinner we both ordered the flat iron steak, I can't say enough good things about it. The steak was tender, seasoned beautifully and cooked perfectly. Servers were friendly and did a great job. They brought a bowl of fresh water for our fur baby without us even asking. read more

Dark Room was clean, and organized. Front Desk was helpful and super friendly. I was able to check in early around 2pm with no additional cost. I really liked how it was very private and secluded, just overall liked my car being right in front of my room - easy to load and unload. Also I read other reviews that complained about bugs, but honestly you're in the desert of course you're going to have a few here and there, it didn't bother me. Definitely will be staying here again and will want a slightly bigger room (that was my fault because this booking was last minute) when I come to visit my boyfriend and I hope to try the restaurant! read more

Location near the National Park was excellent. Very close to the north entrance. We were there in February. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Beds were amazing and the quilts and comforters were clean and super cozy. The room dates back 100+ years, but I have no complaints about the age. The room and, indeed, the whole resort area was filled with the ambience of a historical place. We did not feel that sacrificed any comforts though. The bathroom was clean and the walk in shower was very nice. They had a very lovely aromatic local soap available in the room as well as dispensers in the shower of quality hair and moisturizer products. There was no refrigerator or microwave, but we were aware of that before arrival, so it was not a problem. There is a cooler in the room and ice available, so we had a place for our leftovers from dinner. The restaurant was exceptional! The food was very high quality, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We were warned the floor does bow in places, but with this being a historic site, I did not find it surprising or off-putting. Also, note there is a step up to the second bed area. There is a divider between the beds that adds privacy and lots of places for luggage and our clothes, so we were not crowded. The tranquil oasis was absolutely beautiful, and I enjoyed watching the white heron feeding in the large expanse of water. The dogs had tons of room to explore there, and I felt very safe letting them wander on a long leash. There was a private courtyard, and parking was very convenient. We did not take time for the pool, but it looked clean and very inviting. Lots of seating to relax around the pool and around other parts of the grounds. All of the staff, both at the restaurant and the inn, were warm and friendly and still efficient. It's a lovely, comfortable piece of history to stay! We will make a trip back there to relax and enjoy the ambiance again. Would definitely recommend staying there! read more

The Mrs. and I had dinner at the 29 Palms Inn last night before heading out to a stargazing event. Earlier in the day the Mrs. called and made a reservation for 6:30, but since we were staying at the Campbell House down the road, we decided to show up early for drinks. We arrived around 5:30 and the restaurant wasn't busy and the bar was empty. We found a seat at the far end of the bar in the corner. It was a great spot to people watch. Chris was behind the bar. I ordered my usual Maker's Mark Manhattan and the Mrs. ordered her usual Bombay Sapphire Martini. Chris told us that he usually waits tables and isn't usually behind the bar. For someone who isn't regally behind the bar he makes a pretty good Manhattan and the Mrs. liked her Martini. Other patrons showed up around 6 and the bar was full and the restaurant was buzzing. We decided to park ourselves at the bar for the rest of the evening rather than get a table. If you're looking for a place that is vegan and gluten free friendly then the 29 Palms in restaurant is the place to go. If you're an omnivore you won't starve. We ordered two vegetable based options for dinner. The first was the Hearts of Palm Cakes which are composed of Hearts of Palm, panko, red bell pepper, red & green onion then deep fried and served with a vegan Cajun remoulade. The flavor profile was better than I expected, the remoulade was great and they were shaped like hearts. For our main we chose the evenings pasta special which was linguine tossed in a lemon caper cream sauce mixed with zucchini. It was really flavorful and light. Chris was able to split the portion on separate plates. From what we can tell from what our fellow diners were ordering, the portion sizes are huge and big enough for two to three people to share. The restaurant isn't that big. There are maybe eight tables inside and three or four outside. The outdoor dining area is on the pool deck. I have to admit it looks pretty awkward trying to eat while people are frolicking in the pool. We saw a lot of buns and they weren't on a burger. The 29 Palms Inn Restaurant says its the most popular place in town. Based upon the great service we received from Chris, the great food and atmosphere, I have no doubt it is. read more

I go here probably once a month and I'm a creature of habit so I always order the same thing...the green curry salmon. I ALWAYS need to put salt and pepper on my food NO MATTER where I eat but last night, my salmon curry was OUT OF THIS WORLD!....no seasoning required. I'm talking 10 out of 10!! Highly recommend! The food here is pretty unique and 100% delicious. I was very happy to see multiple vegan options and opted for the hearts of palm cakes, falafel, roasted yam hummus, and zucchini fries. The hearts of palm cakes are the star of the show, I think there were four hockey puck sized cakes that were crispy on the outside, soft on the interior, and come with a zingy remoulade. I would have eaten three orders if I had room. The sesame falafel are not like a traditional chickpea fritter, but they are slightly crispier with a strong sesame flavors. The roasted yam and chipotle humus was amazing as well and came with like five different sliced vegetables and a sliced pita. The zucchini fries were huge and I was way too full to give them a fair review, so be careful how much you take on when you order! I will definitely be back for another round. read more

The golden girl drink was delicious and very peachy flavored which was perfect! Mojito was crisp, and the Heidi's Brew was perfect to finish off my meal here! My kids had the kids pizza and they loved it! We shared a few appetizers and my boys loved the fried calamari, while my husband and I loved the hearts of Palms cakes, the inn's famous sautéed mushrooms reminded us of escargot from Paris, and the sourdough pizza was delicious! What a beautiful location and what fabulous food. I love when everything is seasoned perfectly. We had a start Caesar salad which may have been one of the best I've ever had in my life. I had the mahi mahi special which was really tasty. My friend had the salmon which was really nice too. Both were served with rice and vegetables. They also offer warm start bread which was nice. This is one of our go-to places in the high desert. I first came here nearly 14 years ago and fell in love with the cozy vibe, great food and live music on Friday nights through the weekend. It's so funny since I didn't realize this was right next to the entrance to Joshua Tree National Park for the longest time. I was always shocked to see how busy -- and international -- the crowd was. But it makes total sense since the park is right there. My review is for the restaurant specifically. I love the vegan option of the carrot osso bucco. It's tender and tasty. My partner tends to get the prime rib but he loved grandpa's ribeye the most. Next time! Our kids had the best time listening to the music and enjoying their food. Everyone was so welcoming to them and the place is super gay friendly with a rainbow flag hanging above the bar. It's definitely a remote spot but we'll worth the drive. Great service! We ate on the patio with our dog after seeing it listed as dog friendly on the way back from JT park. I had a pasta special with shrimp and ingredients from their local farm. So I'm a returning local. Grew up in 29, went to school with Gretchen, knew the Grunt family well, and spent a lot of time at the Inn. I moved away for 30 years and now I'm back! The Inn is still a go to place for special occasions. My sister came to town with her son and my mom and I took them out to dinner on April 14th. My sisters birthday is April 15th, but the Inn is closed on Mondays. I made a reservation for 5:30 and we were seated quickly and offered water and their delicious sourdough bread. Then it went slightly downhill....even though we got there just 30 minutes after they opened for dinner, the wait seemed to be pretty long. We ordered drinks and entrees but by 6:45, still no entrees. My mom had ordered the portobello mushroom but after 20 minutes, our server came to tell us they didn't have them. So my mom picked something else. Our food finally arrived about 7pm. Now, here's where things got better. Our server Julie was wonderful!!! She was so apologetic about the long wait for our food and the issue with the portobello. She had a smile all night and man was she hustling!! We found out they only had two servers for the inside and outside dining. And they got busy! By 7:30pm the dining room was completely full! There were some young girls bussing tables and they were attentive and quick too. When we got our food, it was definitely worth the wait. Delicious!! Another staple on the menu besides the bread is their chocolate mousse. It's been on the menu since I was in high school. And it did not disappoint. Julie was so sweet to bring it to my sister on the house for her birthday too. So overall, we had a great night. I think the food coming slow could have just been that they didn't have enough staff and maybe poor communication between the kitchen staff and wait staff as to what menu items they didn't have available. I told the waitress it seemed more done than we asked for when I first cut into it, but she only offered to take a different order.
