    Hearts of Palm Cakes
    Bill S.

The Mrs. and I had dinner at the 29 Palms Inn last night before heading out to a stargazing event. Earlier in the day the Mrs. called and made a reservation for 6:30, but since we were staying at the Campbell House down the road, we decided to show up early for drinks. We arrived around 5:30 and the restaurant wasn't busy and the bar was empty. We found a seat at the far end of the bar in the corner. It was a great spot to people watch. Chris was behind the bar. I ordered my usual Maker's Mark Manhattan and the Mrs. ordered her usual Bombay Sapphire Martini. Chris told us that he usually waits tables and isn't usually behind the bar. For someone who isn't regally behind the bar he makes a pretty good Manhattan and the Mrs. liked her Martini. Other patrons showed up around 6 and the bar was full and the restaurant was buzzing. We decided to park ourselves at the bar for the rest of the evening rather than get a table. If you're looking for a place that is vegan and gluten free friendly then the 29 Palms in restaurant is the place to go. If you're an omnivore you won't starve. We ordered two vegetable based options for dinner. The first was the Hearts of Palm Cakes which are composed of Hearts of Palm, panko, red bell pepper, red & green onion then deep fried and served with a vegan Cajun remoulade. The flavor profile was better than I expected, the remoulade was great and they were shaped like hearts. For our main we chose the evenings pasta special which was linguine tossed in a lemon caper cream sauce mixed with zucchini. It was really flavorful and light. Chris was able to split the portion on separate plates. From what we can tell from what our fellow diners were ordering, the portion sizes are huge and big enough for two to three people to share. The restaurant isn't that big. There are maybe eight tables inside and three or four outside. The outdoor dining area is on the pool deck. I have to admit it looks pretty awkward trying to eat while people are frolicking in the pool. We saw a lot of buns and they weren't on a burger. The 29 Palms Inn Restaurant says its the most popular place in town. Based upon the great service we received from Chris, the great food and atmosphere, I have no doubt it is.

I go here probably once a month and I'm a creature of habit so I always order the same thing...the green curry salmon. I ALWAYS need to put salt and pepper on my food NO MATTER where I eat but last night, my salmon curry was OUT OF THIS WORLD!....no seasoning required. I'm talking 10 out of 10!! Highly recommend! It's pricy but worth every penny and the portions are HUGE! I have leftovers for lunch and dinner tonight!

Coolest place around. Food, service, music, ambience. It's history and contemporary in every way. And it's beautiful.

I love the hidden restaurant and the amazing service! Julie took good care of us and made sure that our drinks were always available. My kids loved the Shirley temples and the food was even better! The golden girl drink was delicious and very peachy flavored which was perfect! Mojito was crisp, and the Heidi's Brew was perfect to finish off my meal here! My kids had the kids pizza and they loved it! We shared a few appetizers and my boys loved the fried calamari, while my husband and I loved the hearts of Palms cakes, the inn's famous sautéed mushrooms reminded us of escargot from Paris, and the sourdough pizza was delicious! Highly recommend you go here but make reservations.

The salmon was cooked to absolute perfection--flaky, incredibly tender, and boasting a beautifully crisp sear on the outside that locked in all the flavor. What really elevated the dish were the sides. The asparagus was vibrant, perfectly seasoned, and had that ideal tender-crisp snap. Paired with the burst-in-your-mouth juiciness of roasted round tomatoes, every single bite offered a masterclass in balanced textures and flavors. The service was excellent and they were great together as a team! From presentation to execution, this dining experience far exceeded my expectations. The entrance lead you down a hallway toward the hostess stand, with couches, a bar and a piano being played to the left. To the right , you enter the main dining room. The space felt open, elegant, and immediately welcoming. Talk about fine dining at its best. The hostess was able to quickly seat our party of six, and our server immediately brought over the menus and filled our water glasses. THE FOOD: We started with the oysters , and they did not disappoint. They were served with a shallot mignonette which was vinegary in all the right ways. They were so good, that we ended up ordering a second round. For dinner, we all ordered the steak with mushrooms and broccoli. The steak was perfectly cooked, and every bite was bursting with flavor. Even the mushrooms and broccoli stood out. Everything was seasoned beautifully without overpowering the actual flavors of the vegetables. Even the bread was so good. It was served with three different butters. And dessert? Also top notch. It was the perfect ending to a wonderful dinner with friends. THE SERVICE: The service really added to the experience. Our server was attentive and took great care of us. The GM, Ray, also stopped by our table, and we ended up chatting and joking with him a bit. He was incredibly friendly and personable and made sure we were having a great experience. Between the setting, the food, the genuinely attentive service, this as one of those dinners where it all felt elevated. Definitely one of the many highlights of our stay at La Quinta Resort.

Morgan's in the Desert: Disappointment After Disappointment. $400 for Meh…read more After living in La Quinta for four years, we were ready to try Morgan's, as it's one of the last foodie restaurants in the Coachella valley that we haven't tried. We arrived early for our reservation, excited to grab a drink at the bar before dinner. Then we were told our table was already available... only to be seated at a dining table in the bar, off to the side, where apparently servers do not exist while staring at the back of the pianist and the barflies. The two bartenders were fantastic--especially Brian, who was working at warp speed--but they already had a packed bar to manage. Adding dining tables to their workload was clearly not realistic. Why were we seated there? Still a mystery. Reservation problems: I booked through the QR code advertised in The Gem for the August prix fixe dinners at La Quinta Resort's restaurants. When we arrived, we were told the prix fixe menu wasn't available that day. Sorry! So we ordered bread and oysters instead. About 15-20 minutes later, the manager came over and said they would honor the prix fixe after all. Great! Except... we'd already ordered appetizers. ‍ And wow, was it SLOW. We were seated at 5:30 and still didn't have our entrées at 7:00. Drinks regularly sat empty, and once the restaurant got busy around 6:30, water refills disappeared completely. Did I mention it was 110 degrees outside? The food? A mixed bag--but overall, wildly overpriced and underwhelming. * Oysters: Ice-cold and served with a good mignonette. Also pricey. * Bread: Fresh and warm, but the olive tapenade was aggressively salty. Again, overpriced. * Watermelon salad: The winner! Refreshing, flavorful, and the spicy nuts gave it a nice kick. Highly recommend. * Chicken cacciatore: Dry chicken, undercooked tomatoes, overcooked pasta. Never again. * Oscar filet: Delicious and well-prepared, but nothing memorable or special--especially for the price. Bottom line: We spent about $400 for a frustrating, painfully slow, mostly mediocre meal. There are too many great restaurants in the area to spend that kind of money on "meh." We won't be back.
