Everything was kind of just alright. Would rate 2.5 The location is really cute but the playing is interesting. When you sit you already have small plates and things at the table which makes sense for indoors but with the desert setting there was sand everywhere. The tables were also covered in sand which obviously isn't their fault but you would think it would be wiped and set before seating. The fresh drinks were imo the best part by far. They were so delicious and like I said very fresh. The kale salad was alright not really much flavor and weirdly soggy. The beet salad was incredible but definitely NOT enough to share considering everything is served family style (and especially with the price). Burger was alright, my sister had this and said "nothing stood out". Again not enough to be considered "family style". With everything being $30-$40 with recommended 4-5 plates per table with family style I would assume they would actually be shareable sizes. Service was good. Having traveled extensively this past month and eaten at our fair share of restaurants, this experience unfortunately missed the mark when it came to service. Our waiter, Andrew, spoke proudly about the impressive restaurants he had previously worked at -- I believe I even heard Nobu mentioned -- which raised our expectations for attentive hospitality. Sadly, that level of experience never really made its way to our table. Simple things like refilling waters, checking in, or asking if we'd like another cocktail never happened after our initial interaction. It genuinely felt like we were forgotten for most of the evening, which was disappointing considering the caliber of restaurant this aims to be. Thankfully, the food itself helped redeem the experience, and the rest of the staff we encountered were warm and pleasant. Visited Kitchen in the Desert on the weekend for their brunch, and it was a lovely experience! We sat inside due to the heat, which unfortunately had a lot of flies buzzing around the table. Otherwise though, this was a great experience. We really liked the shakshouka, especially paired with the sour dough. I thought the tortilla de patata was fine - I enjoyed it, but it could have used more flavor / "brava" sauce. Service was attentive and helpful with recommendations. I can't say enough good things about this place! My husband and I went out to Joshua Tree for my birthday weekend and this was a last minute find for a birthday dinner. I'm so happy we found this gem. Make sure to have reservations, as the night progressed I realized how popular it is and for good reason. The ambience is amazing at night when the lights are on it has a beautiful atmosphere. They curate everything perfectly. Our waiter was so kind, very knowledgeable on everything we ordered and shared that the chef was Jamaican which was such a neat surprise. The drinks were strong and still delicious. I came here as it was close to the place my group and I were staying for Joshua Tree. The Jerk Chicken tastes alright and the steak and drinks are pretty decent. I would not recommend the coconut rice though as it tastes funny, nothing wrong with it but just not my style. Best part of the restaurant is the desert theme of the restaurant with a mini gift shop and an outdoors lounge. I would say the service could be a little better but overall not a terrible experience. If you're looking for a spot that perfectly captures that high-desert magic, Kitchen in the Desert is it. It truly feels like you're dining out in the wild, but with a much more elevated touch. We had a reservation for a large group of 13 people, and sitting outdoors was definitely the move. While they do have indoor seating, the outdoor atmosphere is unmatched, especially since the weather was absolutely perfect for us. We did dinner tapas style, which worked out great for a big crowd. To make sharing easy, we ordered two of every dish for each side of the table so everyone got a taste of everything. The food was fantastic, but the layout of the place is what really makes it an experience. They have a bar area, and there are even some cute stores right around the restaurant to browse if you want to do a little shopping before or after your meal. Three stars - entrée pricing for tapas portions We ordered the lamb, the shrimp, and the jerk chicken. Although the flavors of the dishes were unique and tasty, the lamb was overdone, the shrimp felt boiled and the sections of chicken we got felt like it was a random piece of the back, no leg thighs or breast, more like the back shoulder of the chicken. What bothered us the most were the prices. For tapas portions the pricing should've been less. For example the shrimp was nearly $30 and all you got was five tiny pieces of shrimp and sauce. We wanted dessert, but we had a hard time wrapping our heads around a $17 slice of Keylime pie. I was also sad that their menu rotates often, I had my heart set on the deep-fried Oreos that were all over yelp, but they do not make them anymore. The pictures of the food looked amazing, so we decided to dine here for one of our friend's birthdays. We made a reservation for Sunday night at 8:15 PM and arrived exactly on time. We were greeted by a little lady who directed our group of 4 to the waiting area just around the corner. It was a decent waiting area with couches, and behind us were some pool tables. It was also a very windy night, which made it uncomfortable. I assumed they were just cleaning a table, preparing it, or maybe running 10 minutes behind since it wasn't super busy. WRONG. We waited almost an hour!! If we hadn't questioned why other people were getting seated before us, I honestly think we'd still be waiting TODAY. We finally asked another group if they were waiting for a table, and they said no. So we asked the little lady how much longer. Her response was, "I didn't know where you were, we sent a text a while ago??!!" YOU DIDN'T KNOW WHERE WE WERE AFTER YOU TOLD US TO GO SIT IN YOUR WAITING AREA?! She finally took us to our table with an attitude. Our server was great and very friendly. She mentioned this is a made-to-order restaurant and that the owner, who is also the chef, is from Trinidad. I was really excited to try his flavors and dishes. I had the chimichurri steak, and the sauces were amazing, but my appetite was ruined by the lack of hospitality. Our food arrived a little after 9:55 PM. Honestly, I would want to try the restaurant again because I feel cheated by the service. I'm not sure if our server knew about our waiting experience because she apologized several times. Would I try it again? Maybe. Maybe I should try their brunch instead. read more

Disappointing Experience and Poor Hospitality I stopped by this café because it was conveniently located next door to my hotel. I simply walked over and asked if they were serving coffee. I was told, "Yes, we serve coffee, but our bar is too busy for you." The way this was communicated was incredibly dismissive and unwelcoming. I understand that a business can get busy, but there are much more professional and hospitable ways to communicate that to a customer. Unfortunately, the experience didn't improve from there. The prices are quite high for the quality of the food, which I found underwhelming and not worth what they charge. Overall, the hospitality was poor, the prices felt excessive for the quality, and I left feeling like my business wasn't wanted. Kitchen in the Desert was hands down my favorite restaurant during my brief stay in Joshua Tree. The food was delicious, hearty, and clearly made with love. When I found out the chef was Trinidadian, I already knew we were in for something good. We shared the jerk chicken and lamb pops, along with sides of brussels sprouts and coconut rice, and we demolished every single bite. Everything was incredibly flavorful and perfectly prepared. For dessert, we finished with a slice of pear and salted caramel cream pie which was absolutely delicious. Their ice cream was vegan and nondairy, and you could barely taste the difference. Such a treat. The service was also wonderful. Our server checked in on us frequently, made sure we were comfortable and warm by ensuring the space heaters were working, and even provided blankets. There are bad dining experiences, and then there is this. Highly unrecommended. We were a large party that arrived around dinner time and were told there would be a wait, which is understandable when seating a big group. We were asked to wait outside and order drinks if we wanted, which a couple of us did. Unfortunately, the experience quickly went downhill. The staff was rude, and one of them got into a verbal argument with our friend after automatically adding a 20% gratuity on top of what he tipped to the drinks. Only two of us had ordered drinks while waiting outside, so adding a large-party gratuity felt unreasonable. It would have been different if we had been seated and the entire group was dining, but this felt like penalizing two people simply because they arrived as part of a larger group. From that point onward, the service continued to deteriorate and it completely dampened the mood for the evening. The biggest disappointment, however, was the food. I'm not exaggerating when I say this was some of the worst food I've had all year. The lamb chops were still frozen in the center, the vegetables were undercooked, and at one point the server even turned the heater down where we were sitting, seemingly out of spite. Not surprising ours was the only table that had a "bad heater" To say we were frustrated would be an understatement. It's especially unfortunate because the place itself is beautiful and has a very inviting atmosphere. We had driven quite a long way to come here and left utterly disappointed. The management really needs to invest in better staff training because the experience fell far short of what the setting promises. read more

They don't have any sodas which was a bummer if you're craving a crisp coke for the heat. But our waiter was on top of refilling our waters. This restaurant has a major communication problem among staff servers and chef/owner. After a very awkward time checking in and getting a table on OpenTable after nearly being turned away for no reservation, we were seated outside in the main area and tended to promptly by our server Sid. She got our drink orders quickly and brought kids water cups which was unexpected but nice. We ordered the focaccia, beet salad, kale, tortilla, a couple burgers, and the jerk chicken for our family of 4. They were out of focaccia because their baker had "not been delivering the full order". I asked if they had any bread since it's one of the few foods my toddler reliably eats and they said no. I asked for a hamburger bun, no. They were also out of the jerk chicken. This blew my mind since the night before I ate at Benny's across the street and they were out of chicken tenders was the whole town out of chicken? About ten minutes later I heard another server tell his table the jerk chicken was "back online". Where did it go I'll never know, but they had it so I had to then ask my server to add it to the order. The beet salad came out first and was a bit plain and didn't have much goat cheese or much balsamic. The kale was very garlicky and flavorful and had nice crispy either parm crisps or fried onions on it. The tortilla was very wet and soupy and the fried egg too runny for me to feel comfortable eating during pregnancy. I have been to Spain and a Spanish tortilla should be firm, cooked and not potatoes mixed into in wet raw egg soup. I truly thought this would have been a safe bet since they are so basic that even rest station cafes in Spain sell proper ones. Also thinking back, why a fried egg on top of an egg dish? Maybe roasted tomato and crème fraiche would be a better complement. Anyway it was inedible but we didn't want to rustle any feathers since the general vibe among staff felt tense already. I got the jerk chicken last and it was honestly delicious. The sweet potato purée it came with tasted like water though and needed some seasoning and maybe just salt and cream or other fat to bolster flavor. Unfortunately by the time the chicken came out the flies also came into the patio area in full force. At times I had 10-15 flies on my chicken. The servers dispensed fly fans to each table. They're trying, and doing what they can...I know! I don't eat red meat but my husband liked the burger. My kid did not, even the plain cheeseburger they were able to accommodate. My toddler ate some of that bun. I know this sounds terrible but we had to go through the Taco Bell drive through after because we were still hungry (well, everyone but my husband, who ate both cheeseburgers). The saving grace of this place is its charming and eclectic atmosphere. Some of the dishes were rocking and others were inedible for a pregnant person (normally I would risk it with wet eggs?). I think they could simplify the menu and relax a bit and it would make their work a bit easier so they can focus on the communication issues and also the OpenTable issues...one host/manager lady grumbled at us that OpenTable has been allowing guests to book tables they "don't have" which seems like something they could figure out if they just tried! read more

5 stars, hands down. OMG -- we had such a blast. We came at night and loved the menu options, especially the pescatarian and vegan choices for my family. We were hosted by David, who was kind, attentive, and genuinely knowledgeable about the food. We absolutely loved the Gambas al Ajillo, the coconut rice, and the summer salad. Those three dishes paired beautifully, and we finished with an all-vegan dessert: cherry pie a la mode with vegan vanilla bean ice cream. Amazing. Dining under the stars in the desert, the twinkle lights, the heat warmers, it all felt magical. I also loved that they offer blankets in case you get cold at night. This was our third time here in the span of two weeks! We fell in love with this place from the first time. We went at night and sat outside! What a great and unique atmosphere! I love the desert/military chic vibe. I I love that all of the staff are fans of the food as well! It says a lot! So far we had the pleasure of being waited on from Catt, Monique & Rossella! They were truly alll amazing and passionate about the cuisine! Every one had great personalities and really took the time to explain the food and the background of it! I love the eclectic style of furniture and art they have displayed! The food is to die for! There is so much depth of flavor!!! Everything we have had has been phenomenal!!!! You literally cannot be disappointed, especially if you appreciate the quality of good food! You can tell there is care and attention behind each plate! The salad was drenched in oil and didn't taste fresh, and the avocado toast was also swimming in oil. To make matters worse, the bread was so hard it was difficult to chew. We brought our concerns to the staff, but there was no real acknowledgment or attempt to resolve the issue. The only response we received was that they could serve the dressing on the side next time which completely missed the point. The dishes themselves were poorly prepared and excessively oily. We ended up leaving almost all of our food on the table and went across the street to a taco place just to have something decent to eat. It was a complete waste of money and a very disappointing experience. Based on the food quality and lack of customer service, I wouldn't recommend this restaurant. read more

The outdoor patio was lovely -- chill, peaceful, and the kind of place you could sip a drink and pretend you're in a lifestyle commercial. We ordered tapas-style dishes (a fancy way of saying "we're all sharing") and two martinis. We went with the jerk chicken and the smash burger. Here's the hiccup: the food showed up first, and by the time our drinks arrived, we were basically done eating. The jerk chicken was tender, but just okay. The smash burger? Pretty solid -- not life-changing, but probably the best you'll get in this area. The martinis were strong. Bonus points for the photo booth $5 gets you two sets of pictures, which is perfect for capturing your "before the martinis" and "after the martinis" faces. Overall, it's a decent spot. Long overdue review. Went here around the end of June after a beautiful hike in Joshua Tree. This space is so beautiful! There is inside and outside seating, but if it's a beautiful day I highly recommend sitting outside in the yard. There is sand outside which was nice for those who enjoy grounding. There are also cute shops outside that you can shop at, and we stopped by afterwards and had great conversations with the shop owners husband. I also got these beautiful earrings made by a local artist. The majority of items in the shop are from local vendors which was really cool. They also have books and the best souvenirs. The restaurant itself is chef owned and operated and you can taste the love and tradition in his cuisines. I had the Jerk Chicken and ordered a side of Coconut Rice to go with it. Everything was so delicious and flavorful. The jerk chicken was fall off the bone, and had the perfect spicy kick to it. The rice was also perfectly cooked and went well with the chicken. The entire staff that we interacted with was so helpful and friendly. Their ice creams are also dairy free which is perfect for those that are vegan or even have a dairy allergy. An absolutely stunning sight to drive up to in the desert night. Feels like a magical little oasis. The restaurant is so chic but in a cozy and warm way. I came with 2 friends late (9:30pm) on a Sunday without a reservation and was glad to find it open and with people inside enjoying their meals. We all split the beet salad, the focaccia, the Brussels sprouts, and the smash burger. The focaccia and smash burger were consumed before photos could be taken but were both delicious. The Brussels sprouts were a standout. The goat cheese maple and mint made it so refreshing and light but with a little sweet edge. The best dish of the night was indisputably the Boo's pear pie. Went to dinner two nights ago and honestly, I'm still kind of shocked at the level of hospitality. We were only about 10 minutes late--and it was a Tuesday, not exactly peak rush. I walked up first with my sister and mom right behind me, immediately apologizing and saying hello to who I assume was the host... or maybe a manager? It genuinely wasn't clear. I explained that I had tried calling, got no answer, and followed the instructions to text the number provided saying we were on the way. When I brought that up, my sister stepped forward to show the text, and the response we got was, "What am I looking at?"--said in a way that felt unnecessarily rude and dismissive. It was literally just the message we were told to send. Then we were told they don't even receive texts and that it goes to "headquarters"... for a small restaurant? That alone was bizarre and off-putting. We were seated, and from there the service stayed pretty mediocre. I had noted in the reservation that we were celebrating my sister's birthday, which was completely ignored the entire night. For context, we were only in Joshua Tree for three days--we were visiting from Portland--and this is a place we usually make a point to come to. So yes, expectations were higher because this was supposed to be a special dinner. The food itself didn't help. Our chicken came out with an extremely spicy sauce underneath that completely overpowered the dish. It was so intense we were literally turning red. We mentioned it to the server, and nothing was done or offered--no acknowledgment beyond that. What really stood out was the timing of everything. The server didn't check on us until we had already eaten about 80% of the meal, which made it pointless to even give feedback at that stage. By the time we were finished and had been sitting for a while, we couldn't even find him. Then suddenly he appeared to ask if we wanted dessert... well after we were clearly done. Still, no mention of the birthday, no effort to make the moment feel even slightly special. On top of that, it was freezing outside. The table next to us was given blankets, but none were offered to us--even though we were sitting there in tank tops. At one point, the same host who had been rude earlier was folding blankets right in front of us without saying a word, which honestly just added to the uncomfortable feeling. Overall, this was a really disappointing experience, especially for one of our first nights back in town. It kind of set the tone in the worst way and brought everything back to that initial interaction at the door. I got a few dishes from here to try after a long day of hiking in Joshua Tree. The service here was amazing and the waitress and staff were really kind. The food itself was okay and the ambiance is great, especially in the evening. read more

Nice environment and vibe. Loved the matcha martini. The food were pretty small portions that is best ordered tapa style. The dishes are vegetarian forward but does have a few meat options such as burger, lamp and fish. I bit pricey at about $65 person and our party of 8 was not fully satisfied. I'd skip the sweets. The olive cake was a bit dry and the apple pie was a bit average. read more

We had a lovely meal here and as other Yelpers noted, the ambiance is really beautiful. I'm just shocked at the prices for what we got. The waitress informed us that these are tapas-style and we should order at least two items per person, but at $30-70 per plate, that seems a bit nuts. I think Yelp put this place as $$ and that needs to be adjusted. EDITED TO ADD: I'm looking at their website now, and noted that the prices we had during our visit may have been inflated due to New Year's Eve. read more
