Let me just say, finding a good pan de dulce spot is not easy as it may seem. There are many but I have to say, this one didn't disappoint. The concha's are not dry and bland. They are just the thing you want with a hot cup of coffee. I also tried their guava turnover and they were delicious. Not stingy at all with the filling and the size is great! The bolillos are great. They carry bolillos filled with jalapeños and cream cheese. I learned today they are called "bolillos machos". Yeah I grabbed plenty of those. They were so good! This place makes you feel more than at home. You feel as if you own the bakery! You are literally grabbing the bread off of the racks, fresh out of the oven. The staff is kind and helpful. The minute you walk in the door you are hit with the aroma of fresh baked bread, so good you can taste it! The place is clean, well organized, and neat. They have a variety of cold and hot drinks, traditional Mexican candies and chips. Price is more than reasonable and affordable. Street parking only. But not a problem. Once you walk in you're greeted with a Buenos Dias and a smile, then you pick up a tray and begin your selection. It's warm & cozy and your memories begin of walking into your grandmas house. Grandma always had fresh pan dulce waiting. This is the place for fresh, soft and amazingly delicious pan dulce. I was going to visit my daughter in San Francisco and I asked her what she wanted me to bring her, she said pan dulce from La Comena in North Hollywood. She asked me for a specific bread but we didn't know the name of it, so, when I was making my selection looking at all the fresh bread being made, the amazing aroma of the bread being baked and the fresh baked bread being put out onto the shelves......ay dios mio it smell so good and brought back so many beautiful memories of when I would bring my kids to this panaderia and they would choose what pan they wanted, anyway as I was choosing my bread and the young lady asked me if I needed any help, so I said I'm looking for a specific bread and I describe it to her and she right away knew! She said that bread is called Matamorros, I was so surprised she knew what I was asking and loaded up my tray. When I arrived at my daughters she was surprised to see that her favorite pan dulce was in the bag and I told her I found out the name of the bread you like, it's called Matamorros. This panaderia is almost at the corner of Vineland and Sherman Way. The entrance is inconspicuous and limited parking on Sherman Way. You get a tray and tongs and walk through tall racks and glass cases of a wonderful variety of Latin American sweet breads, cookies, cakes and big rolls. Although the sign outside says tamales, they do not offer any type of tamales. The selection brought back fond childhood memories for me of an old bakery in Oxnard. I will say this panaderia had more pastries and pan dulce than I have ever seen in one place. The prices are a mystery and I did walk out with a huge bag filled with a variety for $16.00. The second time I went was $20.00. Again my bag was packed full. They use paper bags first and put those bags into a very sturdy large red bag they give you. Lovely young lady helped me the first time as she saw me using a walker, balancing the tray and struggling to open cases. I recommend this place if you don't mind that the racks are open and sanitation is not guaranteed. read more

What a gem! Someone at work brought their concha's and they were a hit! So naturally I went there to buy a dozen to take to a gathering. The place is sort of hidden so you may have to drive by a couple of times to find it. The guy behind the counter was very nice and helpful for a newbie like me. Me recomendaron esta panadería para ordenar un pastel. La verdad no me gusto como no pueden cumplir cosas simples. El señor que tomo mi orden me preguntó que le enseñé una foto como yo quería el pastel y dijo no a DOS fotos porque no usan FONDANT. Bueno ya le dije que mejor lo deje plano y que por lo menos le ponga el nombre de mi hija, ni eso lo pusieron. Ya que llegamos por el pastel La señora que nos dio el pastel no le puso Caja ni Cartón, así simple lo quería dar y le dijimos que por lo menos un cartón para cargar el pastel y todavía con mala actitud. Forget the grocery store for bolillos/taleras. I stepped in here and asked the gentleman at the counter what they had. He proceeds to hand me a sheet tray and tongs and leads me to THIS. I love this place, it's like a candy store to us Mexicans haha. They currently have breads wrapped individually or you can pick them out with tongs and your tray. If you get lucky and show up when the breads are freshly baked I say get it all! Easy self-serve, grab a tray get what u want and pay. Limited parking but people go in out fairly quickly. I believe there may be parking in the back. I just found out about this bakery and I am in love with the bolios. I usually order 6 and the cost is $2.50 During COVID you are required to wear a mask to enter, the sweet bread is pre packaged. There is sanitizer, staff is wearing gloves. You can enter to get your own bread or tell the employee what you need and they can grab it for you. The parking is annoying but I've always been able to find one, street parking only. read more

I'm going strictly off taste, I judge every panaderia by their vanilla concha! Went on a Sunday morning and the concha already tastes stale! The other pan I got was ok, but pretty standard. La Colmena, this is where the honey is at! (It means beehive in spanish.) My little local panaderia and I'm happy it's right down the street. Probably hit this place up at least 2 times a week for fresh, warm pan dulce and bolillos. You can get 3 bolillos for a dollar. Take those home, toast a bolillo for a bit and make yourself a bomb as torta sandwich. With beans and egg or de jamon & fresh avocado with jalapenos. The hell with it, just eat the bolillo by itself. Bolillo in one hand & a canned shasta in the other. They are that good. As a kid, my mom would always buy a big bag of pan dulce in the mornings. An assortment of sweet bread but only ONE puerquito (gingerbread type, shaped like a little pig) would be in the bag. We would all fight over it: "I want the pig!" "Mom! Tell Violy not to bite it cause it's for me... NO!!!" "I told you, she bought it for me cause I'm her favorite" "MOM! she's not your favorite, right?....Right!?!" Now that I look back, I wonder why my mom wouldn't just buy 2 or 3 puerquitos to avoid the bickering... I love my mom! This place makes the best Mexican bread. They open in the wee hours of the morning & even when it's pouring outside, they'll get the sandbags to block out any rain that might seep in from the flooding of the streets.
