The food was delicious. Exactly what I expected. I didn't sit and dine there but the cashier was nice. It took a bit to get my food but, with that said, it is homemade... per usual I forgot to take a picture bc I was too hungry but I will be going back for tlayuda!!! It was both my lunch and dinner lol When I go back I will get that picture. There is a little area to buy bread and other with products from Oaxaca. And behind that is the seating area. Can't speak for that service bc I didn't eat there. But the food was delicious :) read more

This place used to be great but it's just fallen apart. The prices went up but the quality went down hill. My family ordered the tlyaudas and they came out cold. The beans were super cold and had no flavor. I saw another comment about the lady in the front having a moody face and we can all agree. Their "Tlayuda Mixta" is not like it used to be. Instead of real avocado they use instant avocado mix (a green liquid gravy). Tasajo (is like beef jerkey) debe ser como sesina, now they use a cheap peace of beef, bistek de rez (it's not jerkey). Their red salsa is no longer roasted dry red chiles, now it's raw canned tomatoe sauce with chiles de arbol. It makes sense.. more profit for them, for less quality for their customers. read more

The food is delicious, the closest to authentic Oaxacan food. Quesadillas are the best! However, it is incredibly HOT inside the building. No fan, No A/C, no form of fresh air flowing. I was sweating as I was eating. The service is decent. I go for the food. read more

My boyfriend and I drove by this place a couple of times. We went to Oaxaca last summer and got to try lots of home-made and street foods in the city. We had been talking about our trip & when we woke up this morning we were craving some mole & thought we would stop by this small place on Santa Fe. This place is an order first/ pay, then seat yourself type of restaurant. The food is somewhat pricey. I ordered the mole negro and tamale oaxaqueño and my boyfriend ordered memalas con carne tasajo. The total was 30.00, but the wait and price was worth the flavors! Also, their Aguas frescas are great. I really enjoyed the mole and the tamale! I will definitely be back. read more

Came here with my family and since we entered the restaurant, the lady at the front (cashier) had a moody face. When the food was taken everything was well until my kids asked for drinks and she told them the drinks they wanted were no longer available. Yet, another couple who came in asked for the same drink and she gave it to them but not my kids. We asked her why and she said there magically was enough for those persons but not for us. Very bad customer service from this lady (cashier) and another lady who was siding with the cashier. Never will we come here again. read more

the friday food adventures with my son MICHAEL continue. decided to try ORTIZ BAKERY & RESTAURANT -- did not graze our way thru the panaderia (bakery) but the restaurant, which features dishes from OAXACA, a state in southwestern MEXICO, was very good. the TAMAL OAXACAENO (apparently tamals are masculine and bakeries are feminine -- who knew ??) was very different than the northern MEXICO-style tamales i'm used to. wrapping it in a banana leaf before steaming gave ORTIZ's moist, flavorful tamal a slightly "grassy" taste. i was disappointed when MICHAEL ordered the MOLE ROJO after i ordered the MOLE NEGRO since i wanted to try lots of different dishes (okay they ARE different dishes but i meant MORE different different dishes) but as is so often the case, i was wrong. turns out it was helpful to try them side-by-side. the ROJO was slightly fruiter and sweeter and the NEGRO (which had a very similar flavor profile to the mole i make) had a quality i can only describe as gothic -- very dark and somber. the meat was a little dry (the mole helped) but then again pretty tough to braise chicken and not have it turn out a little dry. both moles were delicious though both of us would give a slight nod to the ROJO (yeah, i know, i was surprised too). the CHAPULINES (fried grasshoppers) were good but, not surprisingly, took some getting used to. they were greasy and tasted like thai fish sauce. when my eleven-year old tried a couple from the leftovers, he suggest the same thing without prompting. MEMELAS (3 to an order) are soft corn tortillas, smeared with a black-bean spread, shredded lettuce, crumbled cotija and an avocado salsa. finger food, you fold 'em up and eat 'em like soft tacos. ordered "con TASJO" (thinly sliced, grilled beef), they tasted exactly like you'd expect them to taste. the TLAYUDA CON CHORIZO is a crispy, oversized flour tortilla topped with black-bean spread, shredded cabbage, stringy OAXACAN cheese, avocado salsa, chorizo and a couple tomato slices. fun to eat and delicious. next time you're in the neighborhood, dust off your high school SPANISH and stop by for some tasty eats. read more

Panaderia was recommended as I was waiting to get my tire repaired at Discount Tire. Not a chain restaurant. My kind of place! I got the stares but it doesn't bother me. Not the first or last time the local clientele pointed at me and had a good laff. Didn't know what to order - as I usually get the pork carnitas at Mexican restaurants - so I asked what people come here to eat. The lady working the counter recommended I give the dark chicken Molè a try. It comes with rice and corn tortillas. Dark because of the sauce color as there's also a red (spicy) sauce. Ok, I'll take the dark Molè to go please. When I got my order and opened it outside of The Tire shop, I thought of taking it back. Took a bite and was ready to go back to ... order another one! "No se arriesga, no gana!" (Nothing ventured,nothing gained) Mmmmm!!!!! Yes, it's an acquired taste, to which I acquired real quick! I've had Molè (on the sweeter side) one other time but this one is a few notches above it. Bitter at first, then a little chocolate sweetness and spicy came last. All in harmony. The chicken was very fresh, as in ... Billy Bobby, now you go fetch us a chicken out of the coop ... that kind of fresh! Corn tortilla has very good flavor and texture. However as you know, eat the freshly made corn tortillas quick. Don't think you're going to save some for later because you'll end up with something entirely ... almost inedible. Keep in mind, this is a totally different south of the border fare. It's Oaxacan fare! read more

I found this place, like others, while waiting for automotive service to complete. I love Oaxacas and central American food in general, and Panaderia Oaxacaqueña Y Restaurant delivers some authentic fare at a very reasonable price. It was mid morning so I ordered huevos rancheros, a buddy ordered pollo mole. The refried black beans alone made me stop and take a second to mark that this place was special. Paired with a real Coke and a soccor game on the tv, I felt verily transported. I may not know what half the menu is, but you can bet I'm going to return and find out. Our portions were very generous, filling our plates and bellies, and then a small box to go. I really look forward to returning again and again. read more

I came to this restaurant with my girlfriend for the first time and the food was great. I ordered memelas con tasajo (meat), which the ingredients (black beans, queso fresco, and cabbage) were rich and delicious. The environment of the restaurant was calm and quiet. There are several tables to sit at and you're able to watch the tv or talk with your peers as you wait for your food. The only thing is that the food does take a while to come out, but other than that my girlfriend and I enjoyed the food. read more

Lowering my rating due to the consistently bad customer service I get here. The lady that works in the kitchen does a lousy job making my food. No salsa at all, even though I asked for it. Microwaving my tortillas instead of heating it on the grill, so by the time I got home they were tough and leathery and dry and inedible. They think that because I am not hispanic they can treat me rudely and shortchange me. Even when they are not busy they act like they can't bother to give me basic service. Flies are all over the place, including inside the pastry cases where they keep the pan. read more

My parents are from Oaxaca and they were impressed with the food here. It is very authentic and everything we've tried is soo delicious. My husband loves the mole negro, I love the carne asada plate, and my parents love the tlayuda and mole rojo. They also have fresh bread and little things to buy. My mom was just there today and her piece of bread fell on the floor right before she got it to the counter. She asked the cashier politely if she could change it and they said no. They refused to let her exchange it and they charged her for it. They said if it would have been them dropping it then they would exchange but otherwise no. So she paid for it. $.50... they lost a few customers over $.50! I wont go back and neither would my mom and dad who experienced this today. To top it off they gave them attitude when they asked if they had certain items. Bummer! read more

BEWARE: KEEP A VIGILANT EYE ON YOUR PURSE! The food is OK, but not worth the risk eating here. I stepped away from my purse for a short time to find a hundred dollars missing! I had checked the money in my wallet AFTER paying for some tamales, and I still had a $100 bill plus two 20's and two 5's. When I stepped away from my table to leave, I realized my wallet was not in my purse. When I came back, my wallet had been "found under the table" and the $100 was gone! The decor and interior is nothing to write home about but I thoroughly enjoyed the food! The woman behind the counter didn't speak any English so be prepared to speak Spanish though the menu is in English. Not knowing what to order we got one regular tamale, one Oaxacan style tamale and an empanada. The tamales were great! The masa is more flavorful than most places. The Oaxacan style tamale has ruined me for other kinds--they are moister and much more flavorful. The empanada was not what I expected but it was still tasty. It was basically a big tortilla filled with yummy stuff and folded in half like a quesadilla. The empanada comes with a choice of fillings but we didn't figure this out while ordering and ended up with the mushroom one. Tasty, but I wish I had realized I could have had a different filling (I thought it was a list of what was in it, as opposed to a list of options). We also ordered the melon water which was very refreshing and lightly sweet. We ate our full and had change from our $20. read more

I've been coming here for some time. This isn't a taco shop or anything that you've ever experienced. It's a small bakery that serves amazing food from Oaxaca. Understanding the menu can be a challenge if you're used to taco shop Mexican food or don't speak Spanish. The food is always amazing and pretty special. read more

The family and I ate there and it was great! The interior was nothing fancy but we didn't care, we came for the food. My wife is Mexican so there was no language barrier. I said a few things and I got the impression that English was spoken by the staff as well. I had the mole negro on chicken and it was delicious. My spouse had some tamales which she described as very good. My child had the red mole and said it was very tasty...she's finicky. My wife also had an agua fresca (cantaloupe) which was very good. Everyone was nice and friendly, we didn't feel out of place at all. Definitely will go back. read more
