This is a hidden gem in Vista! We were looking for a casual restaurant for a relaxing dinner with friends, and this place was perfect. The food was fantastic, they have an excellent beer menu (and other adult beverages are available too), and our waiter was so fun and helpful. Two of us had the chicken mole - the chicken was perfectly cooked, the corn tortillas were handmade and fresh, and the mole sauce was flavorful and well balanced - delicious. Went here for lunch with a friend for the first time to give it a try. Nothing fancy inside, with your basic four chairs and a table set up with a small bar. There were approximately 12 tables in the first section, and it got a little loud as it filled up at lunch time but not bad to the point of annoying. Not sure how many tables in the second section. Our very pleasant server brought us waters and fresh Tortilla Chips with a Black Bean sauce on them and two different hot sauces. Very fresh tasting and enjoyable. We ordered Modelo draft Beers, $7 each. They gave us a breakfast menu, regular menu, drink menu and another menu that I didn't even bother to look at. Too much. My friend and I really like Taquitos, so we thought we would give them a try here since it was our first time. He got beef and I got chicken. They also have pork. For $15, we got five Taquitos covered with some Black Bean sauce, Guacamole, Creme Fresh and Mexican Cheese. They were piping hot when served, crunchy on the outside with a good amount of filling that you could sink your teeth into and really taste. They were delicious, some of the best we have had. By the time we finished our lunch every table in our section was occupied and they had opened up their second seating area too. A consistent stream of "To Go" orders was being picked up all during our lunch. If I could, I would have given them a 4.7-star rating. The only reason not to being a 5 is two things. First, the entry point is a choke point, people standing in and out the front door trying to get in and there are no waiting seats inside so people waiting to pick up a "To Go" order sit at tables and or stand over other diners by the front door. Second the ambience is on the noisy side and basic. For their great food it is not going to stop me from going back and trying some of their other dishes though. read more

Tucked inside a strip mall, we met family for dinner on a Friday night. Decor was basic. Food came out fast. Tacos I had were very tasty. The Guacamole was very bland- no seasoning. Service was ok. We found out Two new people were in training. This may have contributed customer service and to the delay getting drinks which didn't arrive until after our meal. One couple, who was there before us, walked out from waiting too long to place their order. Our Margaritas were not well made- it tasted like watered down lemonade. And We had to ask twice for kids drinks. Our family said service is usually not like this. Maybe management can re-evaluate training new people on evenings during the week verses on a weekend? We came here while we were in Southern California, and this place was really good. The ambience was great, the way the tables were set up, the music, everything just felt good and welcoming. The food was delicious. I had the carne asada plate and also tried a taco, and everything was on point. I knew what I wanted and how to pick it, and my food did not disappoint at all. My husband had the taquitos and enchiladas. His experience was a little different because he went more on the veggie side, and a lot of his dishes had potatoes, so after a while it started to taste the same for him. But overall, the food itself was still good. The service was great, drinks were good, and the overall vibe made it a really enjoyable experience. I got the taquitos with nicely seasoned tender beef, black beans, lettuce, tomato, guacamole, sour cream, and queso fresco. They were among the best I've had. A nice, clean Mexican restaurant. Everything was good, but I expected to be wow'd by it and I wasn't. It started with the complimentary basket of chips. It just seemed skimpy and if you want more, you have to pay extra. I had the chicken mole. Delicious, rich mole, but the amount of chicken (boneless) seemed skimpy. Rice and beans were unremarkable. Others in my group ordered chile verde, green chilaquiles with scrambled eggs, the 3 taco combo (birria, carnitas, chicken), molotes and a birria plate. All meats were very tender and prepared and cooked nicely. I thought the birria tasted quite plain, though. It didn't have any hints of cinnamon, chiles. The restaurant is a true hidden gem found them on yelp! The owner down to earth and really nice gave us a short history of how the place came about! Everything really fresh and flavors were amazing. I had ordered vegetarian enchiladas and hubby had ordered cheese. We asked which enchilada sauce he recommended and went with the red. The vegetarian enchiladas contained onions, bell peppers and potatoes all sautéed and felt light compared to the cheese in my opinion had I ordered cheese I think I could have eaten 2 not the three that came in the plate . I suggested this place for my mother in law birthday. It was good. Food and service were good. She said should be down to come back but for me I definitely would choose somewhere else if it's my choice. Ambiance is more quick service even though it is full service. I did not like that only the first serving of chips is free because the portion was minuscule. I think the 3 of us weee able to have about 3 or 4 chips each. I had the carnitas quesadilla. The carnitas were really good but very greasy to the point of half my quesadilla ended up being inedible for me due to soaking in the grease however my husband finished it off no problem. Portions are on the smaller side, again just from what we come to expect from a Mexican restaurant in California. Everyone ate their meals quickly. I don't know if that was due to loving them oe the smaller portion but I'm guessing a little of both. I don't know that I will recommend this place. It did end up getting pretty busy so others are seeing what I'm not but I can't in good conscience recommend others to come here over other options. 4.5 stars is false advertising and sadly this place was also recommended to me. The black beans tasted like black licorice...Google why that is. The chile verde was canned enchilada sauce that was doctored up w/lemon. The molete appetizer was frozen then deep fried. The tacos were recommend by the waitress and they were flavorless. The Jamaica agua Fresca was good and not out of a soda fountain which is the only thing I enjoyed. Any taco shop would have been better. read more

This is a cute little spot in Vista, I heard wonderful reviews from people and decided to try it for ourselves. Service was fast and on top of any of our needs. The food was delicious and came out quickly for a Saturday evening with a full house . My favorite was the carne asada quesadilla, the flavor was so GOOD. Spectacular! One thing I love about Oaxacan cuisine is the quality of the tortillas, and Cocina del Carmen delivers! They have a delicious earthy, nutty flavor, and like all the food here, are made fresh daily. The mole sauce was excellent as well with subtle chocolate and raisin hints. What a delightful find in the small town of Vista! My wife and I both ordered the barria plate because of a recommendation from our friendly waitress, when we asked for one. Even though the place was packed on a Tuesday night, there was a table available, and we got speedy service. The chips and salsa were about the best we've ever had, and our meals came out within minutes. Even though we are only in town for a week, I'm pretty sure that we will be back for more this week. I wish we had time to try everything on the menu. Our meals were delicious and unique, topped off by a good selection of craft draft beers. The owner was telling us how they import the tlayudas, queso, and seasonings from Mexico. Everything is made from scratch and fresh. Our servers were not only knowledgeable and helpful, they were friendly and SO quick! Our food got out in a matter of minutes. Hot and tasty. The Birria taco was absolutely killer. my wife got the enchiladas and they were equally as tasty. She didn't love the mole sauce, but loved the green and red sauces. I got the Tlayuda Oaxaqueña. What a find this is definitely a locals hangout with incredible food, fast excellent service. The atmosphere is very casual decor is from Oaxaca Mexico and so is the cuisine. Full of flavor. The food was good, and the service started off strong--we were greeted and attended to right away. However, as time went on, the service declined and we weren't checked on as regularly as we've experienced at other restaurants. We had to call the server several times for refills. To be fair, it did seem like he was handling most of the work on his own, which explained some of the delays. Great food, great drinks and fair prices. the owner pretty much can go off menu if you see something you would like different during preparation which is a great plus. I usually give it 5 stars but the service today was a little off and I'm sure it will be right back to par. Everyone one has their days where they may not be at 100. Definitely will be coming back soon. Menu: We had chile relleno in red sauce which as you can see in the pictures was very well presented and was stuffed from top to bottom with cheese. Beans were good but if you want the black refried mole beans you can ask for them instead. The birria sandwich was very juicy and meaty. This place is good! I've been wanting to visit Cocina del Carmen for over a year, since I first heard of this place. I've been traveling to Oaxaca several times a year since 2010. I love the culture, people and food of Oaxaca! Finally visited tonight with my brother and sister-in-law. I was not disappointed. The food! They advertise they have Oaxacan food, so I was pleasently surprised to see they offered tlayudas and a few dishes with mole. My sister-in-law and I both ordered the Tlayuda Oaxaqueña and my brother got the Chicken Mole. I tried the mole dish and the mole was pretty legit. It's a little lighter than a mole negro and darker than mole colorado. Looks like a mole poblano. Chef Carmen(owner-chef) came and greeted us at the table. She was very nice and loved sharing her story and talking about the food at her restaurant! She described the process of how she makes the mole but didn't specifically give it a name. I call it tastey! My brother loved it. The tlayuda I ordered looked and tasted legit. You wouldn't guess by the photo that I was in Vista. You could put that tlayuda in any restaurant in Oaxaca and you'd be none the wiser. Had that very familiar crunch, not to thin not to thick. Covered with black bean "spread" and tomatoes, avocado slices and what looks like chopped cabbage. And of course lots of quesillo(Oaxacan cheese) with steak and pork. It was served open as you can see in the photo. I saw some folks next to us folding it over, which is the way it's served in some places in Oaxaca. It was good!! My sister in law really enjoyed her tlayuda as well. The place is pretty spacious but not too big. Looks they occupy 2 spots in the little strip mall they are in. Has a nice cozy feel and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. We got there around 530 and there was only one table occupied. By the time we left, 90 mins later, we saw the place fill up. There were some gringos and a lot of Spanish speakers. I always say if the place doesn't have native speakers, depending on the cuisine, eating there, watch out! Will definitely recommend this place to friends and strangers. I will be back to try some of their other Oaxacan dishes. If you just want great Mexican food, they have some dishes that most are familiar with, I'm sure they are good. Highly recommend this place. read more
