I had supper last evening on the patio at Pancho Y Emiliano (on Augusta Avenue in Kensington Market) with my friends, Trish and Yvette. Trish and Yvette shared an order of Guacamole Vegan (Mashed avocado seasoned and topped with pico de gallo, served with fresh corn chips). Trish had Enchiladas Vegan (Three corn tortillas filled with sautéed sweet peppers, onion and mushrooms. Topped with a zesty green tomatillo sauce and garnished with sour cream, fresh cheese, and onion. Refried beans and rice on the side.). Yvette had Camarones en Verde (Sauteed shrimp served with our light and fresh-tasting mole verde sauce, made with a delicious combination of seeds, tomatillo, chiles, and aromatic green herbs. We finally tried this cute, dimly-lit sit-down restaurant on the main strip of Kensington Market! This place was such a good find! The portions were very generous and we left stuffed and happy. Pro tip: order these two dishes together: the guacamole and the choriqueso (this is chorizo plus cheese). With the tortillas and the chips, you can make a super combo between them and it's cool and hot, crunchy and soft, and so perfect! Also, their fish tacos were perfect-- super delicate fish, perfectly battered, with the right amount of toppings that had an unexpected bit of sweetness. So good! read more

We were passing through Chinatown and decided to have a drink and a snack before heading back to Burlington to get ready for dinner reservations. This establishment sits right on the strip so there is a good opportunity to have drinks and people watch. I would suggest adding additional shade to allow for more people to sit outside. We opted to sit inside which is the upstairs of the restaurant as the only tables available was in the sun! We ordered a spicy margarita, spicy Paloma and ceviche. Absolutely delicious! I'm so happy I walked by this restaurant in the iconic Kensington Market district. Such a friendly and welcoming vibe. Indoor and outdoor seating, friendly service, and fantastic food. I had the Coctel de Camaron, which was fresh and refreshing. This is a review for their chilaquiles, which was 23 dollars before tax and tip. It was very basic and disappointing. You don't even get egg. You have to pay extra. It's supposed to have egg... the sauce was bland... the chicken a bit smelly... drips of sour cream and cheese... that was it. And a few slices of radish and onion. Before coming into the restaurant, while I was reading the menu outside, the server came out to tell me that they have authentic Mexican food. Once I sat down, I noticed she did this for all the other non-decideds who were reading the menu and hanging out in front of the restaurant. After I sat down though, it was impossible to flag her after to get the bill. Man, do I ever feel tourist trapped in my own city. What was I thinking? Elite Yelper... há I'm such an amateur. Then when it was my time to order, the staff took the order of the Spanish speaking guy behind me. Like what??? This place caught our eye while walking through Kensington. It is a small place, they had set up social distancing barriers on the patio and it was nice. We ordered the guacamole, vegetarian tamale and a margarita. We were so full, we could not eat another bite after all this. The guacamole was served in a edible tortilla bowl, and there was a lot of it and it was DELICOUS! The tamale was done well and very filling. The Margarita was delicious, very well flavoured. Snack time! Great food. They are not trying to be a formal restaurant in the classic sense. This is mama in the kitchen good basic food time. (And they do a mean mohita) Have been there a few times during the week but today was Sunday and a street festival. They were slammed but the staff coped well and were attentive and helpful. My friends and I were walking in Kensington Market, and were really hungry. This place's menu caught our eye. It's a very small restaurant, not really decorated and kind of old looking, but they have a very cute patio outside. If you choose to sit inside, the fans are extremely loud and it might be hard to hear yourself speak. The menu is diverse, they have an item on the menu for everyone! We ordered the guacamole entree. The portion wasn't big, but it felt enough for 3 people. The guacamole was very good! We also ordered the pollo tacos. It comes with 3 small tacos in the plate. They were delicious, but a little bit small which felt a little much for the price. The service is very quick, and the waiters are friendly and can explain the menu items if you're not sure of what to have. Where other spots have outstanding food, this spot has table service and a great view looking out from an elevated perspective with a neat vista along Baldwin St. The interior is peaceful and has cool and fascinating pictures of Mexico and I found my thoughts wandering there, catching me in a reverie. Wow! Wow! Wow! We stopped by this adorable Mexican restaurant over the weekend and had a great experience. I ordered the ceviche, since I wasn't too hungry and it was made perfectly and just like you would receive it in Central America. I grew up in Costa Rica and have ordered many mediocre and disappointing ceviches in Toronto but this one did not disappoint. It was made perfectly! It was seasoned with lime juice and was a large portion. It featured lots of tomatoes and was the most authentic ceviche I have had in Toronto. It was served in a large glass bowl and came with lots of corn tortilla trips. It was splendido! My boyfriend ordered a platter or three vegetable tacos and he really enjoyed them. This spot is located at the heart of Kensington market. When I came for dinner there was live music and it was a very lively atmosphere. The patios are sanitized between customers and the servers are wonderful! The food was delicious, however it is on the pricier side. Very little quantity for what you're paying. I got the ceviche and chicken tacos. The tacos were tasty and juicy and if summer had a taste it would ceviche( however u only get like 6-7 small tortilla chips so it's not that great for sharing). The food was good but nothing spectacular. It was quite hard to get the attention of the server, I understand they're busy though but it would be better to add more servers in the dining area, and when they don't get a 20% tip, they give you a smirk and don't even say thank you. A $20 tip is not enough for you guys who provide crappy service? not ever coming back here or recommend this to friends. I would rather go to birria catrina which is probably 20 steps away from this place and would be more than okay to sit behind the store under a tree with metal chairs, at least I don't get an attitude if they don't expect the huge tip when their service is just mediocre at best. read more

Walking around Kensington one day my friend and I decided to check this place out. The patio was full so we went inside. It's a pretty big restaurant that can accommodate large groups. It looked happening and the menu looked interesting so we decided to stop in for a small bite. Maybe it's just me and old age and losing taste buds, but I felt there was no flavour in anything I had here. We got the guac and chips to share. The guac tasted pretty bland, no freshness or even salt to the dish. The chips however were pretty decent. I ordered the Rojas tamales...ehhh. That pretty much sums up that dish. There were four of us and we all had tacos: chicken, steak, carnitas and Baja fish. The chicken tacos were tasty enough with well cooked meat. The carnitas got an okay nod. The steak was bland and looked terribly pale. The fish was covered in a thick and over cooked batter. Not crisp or tasty. Guac was good, as was the margarita. Would not ever recommend this place. This is such a good Mexican restaurant. The items are really authentic and super flavourful. The ceviche is made fresh daily and you can tell. The fish is so fresh and the mix ins are perfect. The portion size is really good as well, the bowl Is definitely bigger than it looks! The fresh tortilla chips pair perfectly. The quesadillas are my favourite. I always order them whenever I go here. They have so much flavour in them and just the right amount of cheese. The addition of chicharrones give it another level of flavour and texture. It's the perfect balance of everything including the corn tortillas which I prefer. They have so many authentic dishes it's great to try a bunch. I'm surprised at the negative reviews. We found this place as a happy accident and it's a favorite now! Cactus salad is a rare find done this light and refreshing. The dressing is perfect. I ordered it with a vegan tamal, which I ate together, along with the guac and chips. They will bring two bottles, a green and a reddish hot sauce.. Green is for the adventurous but they both add a nice kick to the tamales. I thought the prices were terrific: a $5 tamal and a $6 salad and I was stuffed. We had great service. The waitress was young and very sweet for such a terribly hot day, and an older woman checked on is three times to see if we liked our food. (It was around 3:00 pm on a Saturday, outside tables full) The food comes out as it is prepared vs altogether.. I don't know if that bothered other reviewers but I prefer it that way: hot and fresh. While wandering in Kensington, we decided to try this big fancy looking restaurant, the interior is pretty attractive. We ordered soups to begin, but our server tried to push to order nachos/ guac etc and also the main course at once, but we had ample to time, so we thought to take it slow & Thank God! I ordered veggie tomato - tortilla soup. The soup was tasteless, there was no salt, no flavour or not even the tangy taste of tomatoes. I asked the server for salt when she came to ask if everything was okay. And guess what? she just went away to take orders from another table, while I still was waiting for her to come back and get me the salt, but she totally ignored me again! So I had to get up and get it myself. I somehow ate the half bowl, I couldn't eat the full bowl of that faded soup. The salsas were too flat as well, it seemed they were watered- down. I found the place expensive even before I tried the food as compared to other eateries in the vicinity. So you would guess, how I felt afterwards! read more

Everyone here is so nice! They took reservations on their patio for opening day June 11, so that gets them a star frankly. And hot damn it was nice it be on a patio. Really, really nice. The margs here are good, the beers reasonably priced for the city ($8 for a hard to find Mexican king can). Food was okay. I really enjoyed the mole - spicy and not too sweet. My husband didn't love the tacos. Guac also okay - chips needed salt. I doubt I'll come again but I won't say stay away! read more

Finally! Mi Raza in Toronto! This little place is in Kensington and so fun! We grabbed a few brews in between shopping and there is outdoor seating, indoor seating and we snagged spots at the small bar. The rice portion is very small and doesn't taste too flavorful. We got three dry steak tacos for $18. And a flavorless chicken tamale for $6. Everything was very bland. No cilantro on anything. This place is incredible! I've been to mexico a number of times and it's near impossible to find close to authentic mexican food. This place is by far the closest to authenticiy that i have found. The staff all came from mexico, everything is made fresh, and the portion sizes are very fair. I had the baja fish tacos. DO NOT BE TURNED OFF BY THE PRICE!!! It is marked as 2 tacos for $16 or something like that. When i got my meal, the tacos were huge. I ended up cuting the fish peices in half and making 4 tacos. I'm indifferent about this new addition to the multitude of Mexican joints in Kensington. On one hand, the fish taco was amazing, but the regular soft tacos were less than appealing. Not to mention, the 35 min wait which you'd hope that the reward would be an amazing meal, but we were less than satisfied. It's located at Baldwin and Augusta, on the upper floor. There's a few picnic tables for communal eating and a window seating for people watching. There's also a piano for decoration but seems to not really play any other function - could fit more seats. As we were waiting there, it was quite noticeable that there was no sense of excitement or energy. It could be that it's that the majority of people were just waiting for their meals. If you're not savvy with Mexican food, all the names might be overwhelming, but the staff there are nice and are patient enough to explain them to you. You have your tacos (a soft tortilla) or "soft tacos" (smaller $6 for 2) with a corn tortilla. You can also make any one of these flavours a burrito - chicken, beef barbacoa, pork, veggie. There's also empanadas and tostadas with creviche. Also Tamales (which I've never tried before til today) among other things. They also have gluten free shells for all of their tacos, so I requested it, but they just plain forgot when it finally came time to make my meal (at least 20-30 mins later) We ordered the fish taco, which was filled with some sort of coleslaw, cream sauce and guac. Aside from the fact the tortilla was not crispy and the entire thing ended up being soggy (waiting for 10 mins while my friend's taco was being prepared) - it was very tasty. We also got two soft tacos, double wrapped in tortilla (not sure why) which ended up with a filling vs shell ratio that was less than desired. The filling inside wasn't hot either, and tasted a little bland over all. We also got a tamale, more out of curiosity. It was wrapped in a Banana Leaf, then steamed (then microwaved to heat up before giving it to us). I quite liked it, but not sure if you can call it a speciality. This a long overdue post, I went to Pancho Y Emiliano back in April. It's one of the many Mexican restaurant that enter the Kensington Market scene. It's named after two Mexican revolutionary heroes, Villa and Zapata and it strives for an authentic taste. Ceviche Tostadas $4.75 ~ Great start to the meal, it was fresh with the perfect amount of "citrus" but I wished that it had a little more fish cause depending on which bite you took, there was more lettuce and avocado than fish. Chili Ajo Pork Tamales $3.75 ~ This was the 1st thing that caught my eye and they were perfect. ~ The pork is melt in your mouth richly flavored goodness warped with equally flavorful corn masa (dough) Fish Taco $5.75 ~ There was a gigantic piece of lightly battered and freshly fried fish which is moist and buttery. ~ No fancy presentation but true yummy flavor with the creamy sauce, guacamole and salsa fresca. ~ Simple, fresh and delicious.
