Since the food is pretty much the same in every Panera place, I will focus on other aspects. They have finally worked out most of the kinks. They had some huge growing pains as they were not ready for opening in such a busy location. They still have some issues with the people taking orders. They tend to only hear parts of the order. For example, I wanted "you pick two" of a soup and a salad. But instead of the cup, I wanted a bowl of soup. When I went to get my order, they gave me a cup. To their credit, when I mentioned this, they immediately gave me a bowl of soup. Unfortunately, this happened again and my wife has experienced a similar incidence. On the good side, once the order is in, the food comes out pretty quickly. Getting out of the parking lot could be an adventure if you need to turn left and go south. Unreliable except in their ability to disappoint. Highlights include a nearly 25 minute wait for which we were offered an apology on the form of a stale cookie and being served a salad completely devoid of dressing after specifically requesting an extra side of it. Panera Bread was always a place I considered going, but I knew the prices wouldn't make my college kid pockets happy. I was in a rush one day, returning to IC from Cedar Rapids, and suddenly I felt the need to grab Panera, for the first time ever. I like their pick two option, I usually pick some kind of sandwich and a cup of soup (always broccoli and cheddar) . They have definitely pulled me in with their rewards program too. Their Mediterranean flat bread was sort of small, the one time I got it. Their other sandwiches have been good so far. Their iced green tea is very delicious as well as their cheese pastries. We had a cashier who seemed completely untrained. We ordered bagels, she delayed getting them; a drive they attended came and took them. She refunded our money but totally cared less. Manager cared even less. Had to ask twice for our fountain drinks cup. Vanilla cream cold brew coffee wa son receipt but came up plain, kid in back said "we don't know if you want cream unless you ask" toe which I pointed out the receipt was for vanilla cream cold brew and he stated, "we know sometimes the receipts are wrong". What?! Weird experience. Need a manager who knows how to manage and train employees. There was no one else in store when we ordered. So strange. Always a fan of Panera! This place does not disappoint. I give it 5 stars due to excellent food preparation and cleanliness. In-spit of busy locale, the tables are clean and soft drinks properly stocked. Sometimes, the ice tea may need refilling at some Panera's. Not his place. The salads are prepared great. I usually love Panera but recently have had a few bad experiences with this one since COVID happened. Their takeout has been stingy. Salads do not have much to them, come in a tiny container and the dressing is a tablespoons worth, nothing more. They just got rid of my favorite soup, the baked potato and won't be bringing it back for a while, even though I know it's a customer favorite. I ordered the tortilla soup instead and it didn't even come with tortilla strips. They gave me a tiny baguette, a quarter size what they usually give, and they didn't even give us our chips even though I reminded them a few times while ordering. When I tried to call to express my concerns they didn't answer and were not available. I just can't believe I payed $22 for this meal. Maybe they are struggling because of the pandemic, but that doesn't mean they should start being stingy with their supportive customers. I probably won't be back any time soon. read more

Just had my second terrible experience at this Panera. The first time, I ordered soup and a salad to go through the drive through, and was not given any spoon or fork. This time, I ordered food through the drive thru, only to sit and wait 20 minutes for my food, which never came. Unbelievably bad service, and it's a pattern. I always get their Chicken and Avocado salad! After I got it once for free at a school function, I have gotten this every time I visit Panera. The portion is very filling. It has boiled egg and blue cheese with bacon bits in it. Healthy and flavorful. Would not miss it for anything! read more

Crap. See pics. Ordered 2 sandwiches that cost $17. One included a small sliver of steak tht covered 1/5 of the bread. One sandwich was 1/2 the size of the other becuase they used the baguette that they normally give you as a side for you salad or soup. So they gave us leftover side bread but charged us $8 per sandwich. There were 2 thin slivers of onion on each sandwich. Unbelievably disappointed. read more

For this brand new location, it sure is poor quality. The cashier was clueless and not very pleasant. Right away they were out of the turkey chili and soba noodle bowl, which we had been waiting to try. The southwest chicken flat bread was cold in the middle and hard as a rock. They didn't give me asiago cheese with my French onion soup. The tables were very dirty. This was our first time at this location, we usually go to the sycamore mall one and I've never had a problem. I won't be returning to this location. The cash registers are operated by very young employees who talk to each other, and make jokes with staff, instead of taking your order. Today, I had to wait almost a minute at the register while the young employee finished her social conversation with another employee before I could order. I got my order to go, and when I opened it later on, I realized she gave me an entirely different baked good than the one I ordered for my friend. I checked the price online, and the price of the baked good I was given by the young employee was less than the price I paid for the baked good my friend wanted. I typically avoid Panera, however, I had a gift card to use up. I ordered the Turkey Sausage, Egg White, and Spinach breakfast sandwich and a fruit cup. Both were absolutely disgusting. The sandwich was soggy, and half of the egg and turkey sausage were outside of the bread. If I weren't hungry and in a hurry, I wouldn't have eaten it. The fruit cup was also disappointing. I just had Panera for lunch. I got the Pick 2 -- bbq chicken flatbread and cup of potato soup. As I was eating the flatbread, I noticed what appeared to be a string of melted cheese. As I pulled at it, I realized it definitely was NOT cheese, but instead the longest piece of hair I have ever come across in food. It was at least 10 inches, and curly. My hair isn't that long and it's not curly. It was definitely not mine. I am absolutely disgusted, and it's taking everything for me to eat the rest of my soup. I wasted an expensive sandwich because there's absolutely no way I'm going to eat the rest of that (and I had only taken 2 bites). I frequent this Panera often, and I will NOT be going back. The people who work here are great and kind and go over the top to make sure customer service is at its prime. The only complaint I have honestly, and the reason I left off a star, is it seems this location is always out of stuff. I understand the location is busy, especially since it has a drive up, but they are always out of soups and bread bowls and occasionally stuff to make frozen drinks. I usually come through the drive through around lunch time. The girl taking the orders is very rude and then when I get to the window I am not greeted. My family loves Panera Bread- it is often our go-to for a quick meal on busy nights. However, we do NOT love this 1st Avenue location, and will not be returning after multiple disappointments over the past year. At least 10 times we have gone here between 6pm-7pm, they've been completely out of bread. Of any kind!! I just don't understand why they don't make more if they routinely run out. It IS Panera BREAD after all. There have also been multiple occasions when we get our bags of food home to eat and find a meal or item missing. Extremely frustrating- especially for the family member who is now without food. Which was me, tonight. This restaurant has only been open for a short time. I did the drive-thru and was impressed that the wait wasn't very long before my food was ready. I have gone almost daily since opening. Drive threw only One time they forgot a bag of chips I ordered, costing .85 so no big deal. And the following day they totally jacked up my order. I couldn't let this one go, I had to park and go in there was no line thankfully. As soon as I walked in holding the bag from drive threw they knew they handed me the wrong order. Came to Iowa for a wedding. Made a pit stop and very nice employees and good atmosphere.

Coffe is adequate (not as good as Starbucks or McDonald's, but less expensive than Starbucks and the food here is better than the sugar/salt/fat laden stuff at Mickey D's). It is a bakery, so you ought to want bread if you come here. It's... OK. They do make very good hot sandwiches. Soup is trucked in, but black bean soup is really enjoyable. Staff tend to be friendly and courteous. Wi-fi access rule (2 hour limit) is very annoying (and unnecessary at non peak times). Audio system plays variety of music from pleasant light jazz to repetitious coffee house junk. Need a place to study or work for awhile? This place is OK. read more
