After a late Saturday night, I returned my rental car to the Enterprise on Sheffield and went looking for a breakfast place to sit and enjoy some coffee while I finally woke up. I was headed for the Wellington Brown line stop when I saw the sign for this quirky little shop. A bread cafe. Sounds perfect! I ordered a breakfast sandwich with bacon and cheddar and a cup of coffee. In short order, a paper-lined plastic basket was delivered to my table with my sandwich and an order of breakfast potatoes. The sandwich was divine! The eggs were perfectly cooked, there was just enough cheese, and the bacon was crispy (without asking!) The bread was pillowy soft, but not in a wonder-bread kind of way. In a we-know-how-to-bake-delicious-bread way. I don't like a sandwich that has such hard bread that the fillings go splat! right onto the table. The potatoes were rather bland, even with the little cup of ...chili sauce? that came with it. I was expecting some kind of hot sauce, but it was only a little bit spicier than ketchup. The dining room of this little place is so cute. There's an eclectic mix of signs and pictures, but my favorite is a painting that looked like it was WPA-era (it wasn't) and depicted bread-making as being similar to giving birth. Had a Roasted Beef sandwich today, 5.50 with chips, and it was amazing. Really moist, tender roast beef, avacado, tomato, spicy mayo piled on their awesome freshly baked garlic olive oil bread. I coulg only eat half so I brought that plus my extra loaf home. Their ingredients are fresh, the menu is large, and I am never disappointed. Oh! They have amazing house made truffles. AMAZING. Waiting 25 minutes for a cafe-style sandwich is way too long. The lady working the front register also scowled like Al Gore would at "non-believers" every time another customer walked in, appearing to inconvenience her. The sandwiches we took home were decent, but a little lacking the meat department. Also, the chips were something I would have eaten 15 years ago. They should at least get some kettle chips or offer cole slaw with sandwiches instead of just giving chips. If I go back here I'm definitely ordering from home and going to pick it up. I work across the street from Panes at Illinois Masonic so I come to grab lunch on occasion. I love this place. First and foremost, get a length of their fresh French bread in the morning. It's amazingly delicious with a nice, crisp crust, soft and fluffy inside and it's so sweet. All of their bread is wonderful. Secondly, the owners and staff are friendly, fast and accommodating. The sandwiches are great (Oaxacan Pork is a personal favorite) and the desserts are to die for. The carrot cake is great but is out-done by their chocolate Coca-Cola with goat's milk caramel-cream cheese frosting. Yes. You read that right. Monster cookies are great too! I got in a rut one Summer. I'd stop in at Pane's every night and get the tortilla salad with chicken, avocado, tomato, that white, crumbly cheese, and tortilla strips on it. I did that for about 3 weeks. I always looked at the other stuff that they had and finally broadened my horizons. I found out that everything they make is good. I really love the Oaxacan pork sandwich with spicy mayo and the BLT. Their tomato bread is good just on its own and I recommend the coca cola cake - strongly recommend. We checked this place out for the first time on a Sunday morning. It has a very local and mom & pop shop vibe to it, kind of similar to Aje Cafe nearby. They have some outdoor seating options and can definitely get crowded when busy. It's cash only and you wait in line to order, then they bring it to your table. We ordered sandwiches this time and they were both delicious and very filling, although all the brunch items I saw at other tables looked equally as amazing. Menu items are customizeable which is always nice, all their bread options are fresh and homemade. Next time I need a loaf of bread for dinner, I won't hesitate to come here to pick some up as they double as a bakery. We also ordered pizza bread and the monster cookie, both were so good but left us bursting at the seams when our meal was finished. I will be back here many times, whether it be for lunch or brunch.
