If you're in the area or remotely close, don't miss this amazing seafood restaurant! We were a large party (14) and our waiter, Jimmy was kind, very knowledgeable and efficient! He made great recommendations and all of them were wonderful! The apps we had were the oyster Rockefeller, fried calamari, and stuffed cabbage rolls, and fried pickles. I would highly recommend them all. They had a special that was red drum and Cajun oysters. I have not had anything so wonderful in quite a long time. Easy reservation for a Tuesday night. Friendly greeting upon arrival. Grouper bites were crispy and served with a yummy chipotle ranch dipping sauce. Enjoyed the pineapple mango tuna special served over jasmine rice. Full of flavor, generous portion, nice presentation. Dessert was a staff recipe. Hit all the plus points being gluten free, vegan and oh so good carrot cake. Overall a nice atmosphere, great staff and would definitely patron again. My husband and I have had a place on Hatteras Island for years and last night, decided to give Pangea Tavern a whirl. Boy are we glad we did! OUTSTANDING food, excellent service, very clean, and the atmosphere was wonderful. The owner is a very nice gentleman who took the time to chat with us even though he was busy working along side his staff. Pangea is now our go to place. Great place! We waited less than 1 hour for a table of 13 (on a Tuesday at 6pm). The waiting area was perfect - playground for kids, corn hole boards, and a beer garden...and the beach in walking distance. Service was excellent, as was the food. Some favorites were the wonton tuna appetizer and the shrimp and grits entree. Portions were slightly small for the cost, but satisfying. Finally, the happy birthday celebration for a person in our group was off the charts awesome - the opera version left us with a great memory of the evening. read more

This place is perfect with kids - the shark decor and playground. We enjoyed our food and our your daughters were thrilled. Our three year old said she wanted to go back the next night. This is one of our favorite places to visit and eat. The staff are wicked friendly; the owner and his kids are involved and engaged in the day to day operations. The food quality is very good; they grow some items from their own garden out back; and they compost items for the garden as well. Often times they will have live music; and they put on live concert events elsewhere on the property. This is a must visit for Hatteras Island. The server, can't remember his name, such an awesome energy and attitude. We were back in Avon for our (nearly) annual Christmas/New Years week in Avon. The weather was great for this time of year, and we saw a lot of porpoises. Surprised at how much damage there was from Hurricane Florence and other storms. Stairs across the dunes were mostly all destroyed, and all the beachfront rental houses with pools had their pools full of sand. It was a great week with family and a friend or two, but after four or five days we were ready to go out and have someone else cook for us. The vote was for Pangea Tavern, near the Avon Pier. You're don't expect to find a great restaurant in a highly seasonal place like Hatteras Island, and we didn't at Pangea Tavern. But it did the job for us. The fried onion rings were great, my burger was pretty good, and nobody complained about anything. I appreciated finding Asheville's Wicked Weed Pernicious Ale on draft here. Service was perky and prices, if a bit on the high side for what you get, were acceptable. read more

The food was very good! The bartender that served us was very friendly but not overbearing. This place recommends reservations, which we did not make, but were able to seat us at the bar anyway. We ordered the groupers as our starter; the Pangea website recommended this and we ordered upon the recommendation and it was delicious. For my entree I ordered the seafood trio; which included mahi, scallops and shrimp as the main dishes and for the sides it had hush puppies, French fries and cole slaw. I'm not much of a coleslaw gal and there weren't any subs so I just got the coleslaw. Everything was good. It's a nice restaurant to go to for a good dinner; there are no requirements as to how you dress (other than having clothes on). The menu had a good selection; not too much, just enough. We made our annual visit to OBX again and dined at Pangea Tavern again and it did not disappoint. It was crowded as it seemed that there was a private party in the back and patio area, but we were able to be easily be seated and enjoy our dinner. Based on the advise of our server and the couple seated next to us, I ordered the shrimp and grits - an excellent choice! In addition to just local shrimp, it was loaded with many other delicious chunks of andouille sausage, red peppers, onion, and mushroom. Not only was the dish rich and full of flavor, the portions were simply humongous! My wife ordered the salmon on squash spaghetti with asparagus. The grilled salmon was great, not dry and the asparagus grilled to perfection. Great selection of local as well as the usual national brands on tap as well as wine to wash down the tasty cuisine. Note, when (not if because the portions are humongous) you take home some leftovers to eat later, the take out container is made of "recycled" or "biodegradable" material so leftovers with sauce or liquid will seep through. Your receipt provides a free admission to the Avon fishing pier - take the hike to help the digestion of great food! I would return again next year. read more

Visited during Pandemic. Staff well equipped w/ masks and gloves and tables appropriately separated. Decor is quite interesting, beach eclectic! After a solid beach day we arrived for a 5pm reservation. Cocktails (Sex on the Avon Pier & Whiskey Sour) and appetizers were wonderful. I strongly recommend the fish bites, which arrived hot, fresh and lightly breaded. The crab bisque was also wonderful. We also tried the clams, mussels and fish and chips. Fish and chips were out of this world. Frankly this was one of those rare beach dinners without problems. Long wait, service issues, cold food are all common at the beach. I think this may have been the best dinner ever at the beach! read more

Service is amazing, but food is way, way, way overpriced but somehow meh. Just find a seafood shack or oyster bar in the area, the food there is 10x as good for 1/10 the price. The reviews here are probably astroturfed. The serving staff is amazing though, probably among the friendliest I've met in OBX. They really helped to ease the pain. read more

My family and I went here to try and get dinner a little before 8pm on a Thursday (they close at 9). My brother-in-law (who is black) went in to see if there was a wait, especially because we wanted to sit outside and it looked like there was a large party wrapping up there. He was told there was no availability for outside or inside for the rest of the evening. He comes out and asks one of us (I am white) to see if we can get a table. I went in and was told it would be 35-40 minutes for outside. I recommend AVOIDING this place to anyone given the treatment my brother-in-law received. This was our first experience here and also the first restaurant we have eaten in since the COVID 19 closures. We had the best meal and an all around wonderful experience. The food was so yummy, the staff were taking all the safety measures to make us feel safe and they were excited that we were there. Our family of 11 worried that we would not be seated together or that we would have to wait but they took our reservations and seated us as soon as we arrived. Really disappointed. We came down from Salvo to eat here after reading such great reviews. We wanted to walk the dogs on the beach and then have a good dinner. So disappointed to find they didn't serve the full menu in the beer garden. We asked if we could order inside and eat outside and were told no. Since we didn't have any other dog friendly options we ordered from the limited menu. Food was average at best. Onion rings had good flavor but needed to be cooked longer. Wings were stringy. Coconut shrimp was decent. Our outside server was nice enough and the food came out quickly but the inside bar tender was rude. Wish we would have known about limited beer garden menu. We wouldn't have driven all the way down for what we had, or we would have left the dogs at home. Would be nice to put a notice on the website about the limited outdoor menu. Unfortunately we won't come back. Wasn't worth the drive. read more

We were staying a street down from this restaurant for the week and decided to give it a try on their $3 beer Tuesday. Their selection of beers was just okay, not abundant like I would expect from a restaurant with a Beer Garden. The food on the other hand was incredible. The seafood pasta had more scallops in it alone than most scallop entrees you'll find anywhere else plus even more seafood. The only reason it gets 4 stars instead of 5 is because the service was extremely slow. Drinks were empty most of the night and it took almost 15 minutes for a waitress to come over. Anytime you're selling all beers for $3 you know it's going to be a busy night so the restaurant should be staffed accordingly. Update: Came for a second visit during our trip and the service at the bar is steps above at the main tables. Eat here if you get the chance! read more

The only reason this place received a 4 rather than a 5 is because you cannot split a check. Please keep this in mind when visiting. It does say it on the menu but you are not told ahead of time. The food was great and plenty of food to where you can't finish or you are stuffed if you do finish it. We went on my daughters birthday and they sang to her and gave her a desert. The customer service is fantastic and food comes out really fast. As for the food. I got the sesame seared tuna minus the rice. It's a seared tuna (cooked to order) with Asia slaw and a cilantro cream sauce on it (picture included). It was delicious. Slightly on the spicy side but nothing unbearable. My daughter got the kids pasta she loved it and wanted to take the left overs home to eat tomorrow for lunch. 2 people in our party got a burger and both really liked it. My aunt got the Tavern chicken tacos and really liked them. The chicken was really tender and seemed to be pan fried not deep fried. She went on and on about the wonderful flavor of the chicken. She mentioned was deconstructed Tacos so you build it yourself. Another person in our party got the shrimp and grits. It was a very large portion and she really liked it. Couldn't eat it all but really liked it. Another person in our party got the fried jumbo shrimp meal. He wasn't real impressed and said it was okay so maybe get something other than the jumbo shrimp meal here. read more

This restaurant is the perfect spot for dinner on vacation! I loved it so much that I came back twice in the same week. Every staff member is so hospitable and attentive that you truly feel special as a patron. I came for dinner on a Thursday night in which they had live music and tiki drink specials. The only thing better than the cocktails and service, is the food. The guacamole and chips are a must try! I also had blackened fish tacos that were delicious and super fresh! Additionally, the staff did a great job enforcing COVID guidelines and did their best to make us feel safe while enjoying a dinner out. read more

Great atmosphere. Employees were fantastic. Food is ok as everything we had was very salty. We ordered the clam soup, crab bisque, fried shrimp and clam linguini. Soups were great with lots of flavor. Fried food was soggy. Linguini was very rich and difficult to eat as you had to get the clams out of the shells while covered in thick sauce. Made for a mess. Very expensive though. Feeding 4 people soup, sodas, and main course and tip cost $200. Average plate was $20+ each. read more

It has been three years since we returned to the outter banks and out of all the restaurants this place has been my most favorite. I love the variety that the menu offers from great food to delicious drinks. The price is reasonable and you are getting food that is always is on par. We had the lobster with butter sauce and the pork chops were so good we came back two days later to eat the same thing because we were really disappointed when we tried a different restaurant. The employees are very friendly and professional. We will definitely look forward to coming back here when we are in town again. I hope it never changes!! Come here every time I visit the Outer Banks. Great quality food and fun environment. Food and drinks are on the pricier side but worth it. Since I'm vegan I always order the Thai Coconut Curry and it is phenomenal. Only downside is the server was a bit absent, and lack of menu items (vegan in particular) showed. Stopped here late in the afternoon since we had our 2 dogs with us. They have a nice fenced in beer garden outside with shaded tables and a grassy area for dogs to roam. We had to go to the bar to order drinks which was no biggie. We ordered a bottle of wine. The bartender said glass wasn't suppose to go outside but since we ordered a bottle he couldn't give us plastic cups. This made my visit!! Drinking a nice wine out of plastic cup is my pet peeve! We ordered the crab dip which was creamy and delicious served with baked pita bread. Highly recommend! We also split the oyster and scallop seafood platter. My only complaint was the scallops were way over seasoned. The oysters were very good and it came with a large serving of fries and coleslaw. The coleslaw was amazing!
