My husband and I visited Sonoma on our ten-year wedding anniversary trip. We visited Pangloss without a reservation, but they accommodated us right away. The building for the tasting room has some rich history, and the stone and bottle wall are very beautiful. We sat in cozy leather chairs near a fireplace for our tasting. I wish I got the name of our server, because he was fantastic! We shared a tasting, but he basically gave my husband and I a double-pour. We discovered some new varietals that we have never heard of in our native New York State. I would drink the sparkling Chenin Blanc all day! It is definitely my new summertime wine. We were referred to this place by someone from Prohibition Distillery and we were lucky to have been seated right away. My husband isn't a big wine person (he's more breweries than wineries) but he was interested in doing a tasting and shockingly enough he really enjoyed the Syrah and I enjoyed the 2018 Mourvèdre which we bought one of each. We also added the cheese and charcuterie board which was delicious. Now, I'm not going to lie, I don't know much about wine other than I love it and I love going to wineries. So, I can't give you much insight on the wine other than they were great and apparently (I'm hoping this is correct) but it was either the Syrah or Mourvèdre pair well with smoked meats. I booked a tasting here last minute and I was not disappointed. The location was gorgeous and we were sat on the back patio. Our host was amazing. He took me through each wine, told me what to look for, and even brought out and extra wine glass just to compare how they smell! His personal experiences and whole attitude made the experience so much fun and I had such a good time here. This place was a must visit and of course I walked away with a bottle of wine. With some from winetasting options as well as a the option to add a charcuterie cheeseboard for only $20. As a sommelier, I was very impressed with the wide array of varietals! Our party of 8 enjoyed our private tasting with Ethan at Pangloss cellars! We made our reservation a week in advance and were given the entire back patio to ourselves. It was an enjoyable private tasting experience. We brought our own lunches to enjoy during our tastings. It was great to be outside to enjoy our lunch and wine. Ethan wore his mask the entire time and was very fun and friendly. Our tasting came with one full bottle per couple. Our crowd favorite was the Grenache. Pictures are worth a thousand words, so I've included pictures to this review. Pangloss was a beautiful location but our group of 11 felt very taken advantage with regards to our cheese tray. We had asked for a cheese tray and were told up front that each person would be charged $15/person; which was no problem. However when the 2x trays of 'cheese' & 1x tray of bread were brought out, we all figured more trays would be brought out once we finished these trays because there was not even enough cheese triangles to feed the 9x that said they were going to partake in the tray. However, this was not the case. $135 later, this is what $135 gets you at Pangloss. So unless this seems appropriate to you, proceed w/caution. If you want a truly good cheese tray, head to the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa's 38 degrees North restaurant. Pangloss--a reference to Voltaire's Dr. Pangloss in his novel Optimisme, is a must visit tasting room while visiting Sonoma Plaza. Modern chill atmosphere, yet true to the roots of this 1902 rock and mortal building. The staff is amazing and attentive and knowledgeable about their product. They offer club membership through their Optimist Society. Seems like a good deal for those not from the area as these wines aren't distributed outside of the winery. Reservations not required, but recommended on the weekends. I highly recommend the tasting menu. $25 for a flight of 5. Full glasses of most available for reasonable prices. Bottles seemed a bargain ranging fro $25 to $60. It was so relaxing I spent a couple hours here, way more than i had planned. Definitely coming back. read more

Soma county has a small town feel that is welcoming and pleasant. It was nice to experience and when I return I will come back to this place. They had great customer service. Upon entering there was a large crowd and it was packed. Despite it being busy they were accommodating. We had a cheese and meat spread and I was able to taste over 7 wines. The restrooms were clean and seating area wad comfortable. Thy have private rooms for tastings. Overall I had a great time! I highly recommend and hope you enjoy! read more

seems like i'm in the minority here on yelp, but i wasn't that fond of pangloss. the wine tasting was mediocre, in my opinion. i skipped all the whites and started with the lightest reds they have, so i'm not sure if that means i'm missing a major component to my review, but i don't really enjoy white wines so what can i do. what i will say was definitely great about pangloss was their charcuterie/cornichon board that came with the tasting. that thing was solid. read more

My Hubby and I went to Pangloss Cellars after having lunch in Sonoma. It was recommended by our waiter and Pangloss was just down the street, so we decided it'd be a good place to try. We got the $25 tasting and shared between the two of us and we loved it! Amber L. was our server. She was so incredibly knowledgeable about the wines and made great recommendations. What I loved was the Pangloss allows customers to exchanged wines on the tasting list with ones on their full menu. We weren't too interested in trying the Pinot Noir and Amber happily to let us swap that for a different one. The wines we had tasted were Marsanne, Chenin Blanc, Grenache, Cabernet from Sonoma and Cabernet from Moon Mountain. The Chenin Blanc was extremely pure and fruity in flavor. Amber had showed us a photo of the process of producing these Chenin Blancs. They store it in these concrete vessels that really allow it to have the perfect cool temperatures and gives it that very pure/clean taste. We had a blast due to Amber's peppy and energetic attitude. We would highly recommend going there for a fun afternoon. It's definitely on our list of go to now when we make a trip to Sonoma! read more

Unfortunately, I wasn't impressed with the tasting experience... and it's possible the wine was actually much better than I tasted; but it was the glassware that ruined my experience. When I tried to swirl and smell the character of the wine, all I could take in was a chemical aroma. I can't believe it was the wine, because it didn't matter what was poured, the same odor was there. I suppose I should have requested another glass, but I just couldn't believe they would make such a rookie mistake. Much later, I asked Sofie about it. She has a much better sense of smell. She agreed there was something off about the glasses that made the wine taste bad. I wasn't impressed with the tasting monologue that went on with the wines. It was more like an entertaining sales pitch for the wines that was not especially entertaining. I could hear Jack Webb's voice: "Just the facts ma'am." We were not a very cooperative group of students as we were more interested in talking about things other than wine, but our host was patient as could be. The best moments were when he left the room to get more wine I think. Pangloss was the name of the main character in Voltaire's book Candide. I read this about 40 years ago and enjoyed it very much - remembering nothing other than it was very witty and that John Steinbeck wrote Tortilla Flats modeled off of Voltaire's story. Steinbeck's book was good. I only remember the part about the town dog grabbing entrails that were dumped in the river (from the local Mortuary which disposed of odds and ends into the river) and running down mainstreet with his prize. So first of all, but 3 or more bottles of wine and your wine tasting is free. We had no problem doing that because we loved the wine. Here's the thing -- we are the furthest thing from wine connoisseurs you will ever meet but I can enjoy a great glass. Went out here on a whim after stopping by The Girl and the Fig for brunch where they recommended a Pangloss wine. After drinking my wine I was immediately in love and we ended up in here. Overall we loved the atmosphere, it was nice and sorry but somehow cozy and comfortable at the same time. We kept talking about how it was the perfect temperature inside too. Not too hot, not too cold. We might just be sensitive but too many places find this hard to manage. For $25 the wine tasting is well worth it but I would recommend booking an appointment if you are more than 2-3 people (especially because the couches look awesome). We will definitely be going back, the area is nice for a quick stroll as well! read more

Our host and connoisseur was Carmen, who was just the most sweet and attentive host we could ask for! We were there celebrating my mom being in remission, and she had already had our table ready, and some bubbly rose to start with! She asked us about the sort of things we liked and made some great recommendations, and even changed out some of the tastings to suit us. She also was super attentive when we were running low on the mustard and crackers on our charcuterie board (because everything was so delicious) and made sure we had everything we needed for an enjoyable experience! We also saw how she was sitting with us and her other tables and describing the wines, we just really appreciated how well she handled her guests and made them feel so at home! The setting could not have been more comfortable and we had a chance to interact with a few others working here. Great vibe, great atmosphere, great wine! Surprised we ever left! (When we did leave we took wine home in an awesome carry bag.) The building was very cool and Ethan gave us a bit of history that made it seem even more cool! But now about the wine...Delicious! We didn't always take wine when we visited a tasting room but we had trouble limiting ourselves at Pangloss. Now that we're back we'll have to get online and restock what we've already finished off! I found a few Pinots that were much better than most we tried on this trip and our friends raved about some of their Cab's. Really happy my friends and I made it to Pangloss. My favorite thing about it here is the location. I've never been to down town Sanoma and it is very quaint with a lot of pretty spots to take pictures. The service that we go here was absolutely phenomenal. The guy who took care of us made it a point to joke around and just talk to us. A lot of wines available specially if you like the red wines. The bathrooms are fancy and the place is decorated super nice. They have a pretty looking area for the members of their wineries. Keep in mind that this is NOT A VINEYARD, so If you're looking for the typical picture of being with small trees and etc this might not be for you, but this IS A CELLAR so they do have a lot of wines available that are transported. If you're in the area try it out so you can see the different type of beauty Pangloss has to offer. read more

So torn, this is a 3.5 for me I think. We didn't get outstanding service here but it also wasn't terrible. The ambiance is historic and relaxed, the building is beautiful, and there's plentiful comfortable seating areas perfect for small and large groups. The wine was good here but I thought they had too much going on and it was confusing. In certain areas you can get wine by the glass and food, in other areas it's just wine tastings and that's it, you'd have to move to get a glass or get food. I heard the gentleman behind the bar tell at least 5 different parties in the span of an hour they couldn't order a specific wine because it was for club members only. And I get that the clubs are a big thing, wine is v. important and many locals actually support these tasting rooms through their membership - it's just kind of annoying for tourists when your business model is confusing (and based on the frequency of the confusion, this one is). That said, all the locals rave about this place and they have a chef on staff so if you are looking for food and wine in the middle of your tasting day, put this on the list! We went in the off season so it worked really well for us, I would go again just to take pictures for the gram and show off to my friends like a fancy historian wine person. (This is a joke I really don't talk like that, but I'd do anything for the 'gram) read more

Wow - this place is awesome! Our group of 7 popped in for wine on a rainy Saturday afternoon, and had a lovely visit. Delicious wine, excellent service, and a gorgeous space! We sat in the lounge, which was beautiful, modern, comfortable, and inviting and each had a glass of wine. I enjoyed my Chardonnay. The service was excellent. Dan, who took care of us, was knowledgeable about the wines, friendly, down-to-earth, and attentive. The entire space is elegant, classy, spacious, and beautifully decorated. Their standard tasting is $25 for 5 wines though they offered us a few others as well. Our favorite was the 2014 Pinot Noir, Charles Vineyard - but it is a "members only" wine so we were not able to take a bottle home - oh well.
