Marble Mansion Inn - The marble mansions in Fair Haven

    Marble Mansion Inn

I did not stay in the mansion but took the time to stop and view these two amazing buildings that…read morelook a lot like a wedding cake. The residences were constructed in the 1860s by the nearby Whitehall, New York-based architect A.C. Hopson, and are examples of the highest Italianate style that was fashionable at the time. A creamy white marble with a slight hint of green, all from the quarries in Rutland, 15 miles to the east, is the source of their characteristic radiance. The Rutland and Whitehall Railroad was used to transport unfinished slabs to the city, where they were hewn into blocks, then shipped to market. But stone magnates Joseph Adams and Ira Allen made a point of selling most of it while also saving some to use in their own creations. There is no cost to view the buildings, one of which is apartments and the other is this one, the Marble Mansion Inn. Just remember that it's private property and be respectful. Breakfast was a delightful bounty of homemade deliciousness. One morning we were served maple bacon (bacon brittle), company eggs and scones. Everything was perfect! Definitely not because if you find yourself in the sweet little town of Granville, NY, you're in for a treat: Mickey and Wayne have put their heart and soul into renovating the old Granville train station into a stunning bed and breakfast, the Station House B&B. When we arrived late in the evening to check in, Mickey was there to greet us and make us feel at home. And her kindness and grace poured over into every detail: from the historic photos, to the antique tables and chairs, to the timely holiday decorations, to the abundance of mugs and tea, which were always available. For which I say thank you! Because we were traveling in a party of 8, we occupied 4 of the 5 rooms, which was fantastic because that afforded us the opportunity to glimpse each cozy space. Three of the rooms have their own bathroom, but two have a shared bathroom. For us, it was no problem since we were all family. This one minor detail is something to consider when selecting your room. Each space is unique, from the name to the decor. Every detail is thoughtfully selected and creates a welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel like you're coming home each night. Although the walls were a bit thin in our room, the Ticket Office, James F and I slept like rocks, we were so comfy! But it doesn't end there. Gotta get to the breakfast part, of course! Coffee was always ready at 7AM and breakfast at 8AM each morning. Well, oftentimes breakfast was waiting for us well past 8AM because some of our group are late risers. And my god, the breakfast spread presented each morning was fantastic: tea, coffee, orange juice, pancakes, french toast, bacon, ham, pastries, yogurt, pudding, it goes on! Basically, everything to keep our bellies happy and ready for the long days ahead. Truly, what hospitality! To Mickey and Wayne: thank you for creating such a friendly and beautiful B&B! As I sit and type this back in Denver, I'm longing for that wonderful breakfast spread! It was truly a pleasure to stay at the Station House B&B.

They were great to chat with and just good down to earth people. We stated in the Freight Office. What a lovely spacious room and the bathroom was massive. Our beds were comfortable and the room temp was perfect. Ok, let's talk about the breakfast! WOW! It was more impressive than most 4-5 star hotels I've stayed at. There was a wide variety of food and everything was made to perfection. I honestly felt like when I used to go to my grandmas house...lots and lots of home cooked goodness! We totally can't wait to come back again. Love the place and owners!

Airbnbs or bed and breakfasts are usually more our cup of tea, but the four humans of our family…read morerecently squeezed into a double queen bedroom at Hampton Inn Rutland for the camaraderie of staying with other ski team families. It was a blast and the hotel was quite pleasant for the genre (mid-range, family friendly). Pros: - There's a nice common room downstairs with a fireplace, where we were able to gather with a big group of friends and share dinner. It's also where breakfast is served in the a.m. - Breakfast service begins at 6 a.m. -- great for those who need an early start. - My kiddos love "Hotel Breakfast" as they call it, and this was no exception. There are two DIY waffle irons with lots of wonderfully unhealthy toppings; hot mini omelettes, sausage, and potatoes; muffins, bagels, toast; cold cereal and oatmeal; fruit salad and whole fruit. - We either had very quiet neighbors or the walls are reasonably well soundproofed. - There's a small, heated pool. It's hyperchlorinated as most hotel pools are, but a nice place to congregate and relax with friends after skiing. - There's a small, but adequate gym -- and a conference room should you need it. - The hotel adjoins a shopping complex that includes a Hannaford's supermarket, an Office Depot and a Michael's. Convenient for friends who had to find poster board for a school project due the following Monday. And we picked up fruit trays and dessert for our team dinner. - The hotel is dog friendly! We traveled without our pup this time, but did get to hang with some great guest canines. This is a massive plus in our book. - Beds were quite comfortable and staff were nice! Two people even dressed up as Santa and Mrs. Claus to say hello to the kids at dinner. :) Cons: - The elevator was out of order during our stay, so those of us staying on the third floor with lots of ski gear to carry up and down got a GREAT workout. - The pool is quite small, more of a cooler-than-usual hot tub than anything else -- so don't expect to swim laps. - There's no fan or ventilation in the bathroom. After four showers, it gets pretty steamy. Neutral: - It's about 30 minutes from Killington Mountain. There are more proximate, dog friendly hotels (e.g. Killington Mountain Lodge) and Airbnbs, but Hampton Inn Rutland may be better priced. - Our room temperature defaulted to 68 or 69 F. I love that it's eco-friendly and it was a good temperature for putting on ski gear -- but we usually keep our home a bit warmer than this. You can change the temperature of course, but ours kept defaulting to the cooler setting at night. - We're not big TV watchers, but for those who are, I think you need to sign in to Netflix, Disney+, etc... with your own account logins. The hotel does not have its own subscriptions. Overall, this was a great, budget-friendly place to stay with a group!

The TV is so small (estimate 36 inch ) and in the corner so far away. No fridge and when I called for ice the told me it was on a different floor but we had no ice bucket, it took them over a hour and a half to deliver one. The bathroom had terrible lighting and my wife couldn't put her makeup on. The entire suite is very old and needs a major upgrade before i stayed here again.

It was much more money. I figured I'd get a better rate because my husband was a disabled. I went to the actual website for the hotel itself in Springfield and the people that answer the phone and I don't remember her name right now, but she was amazing so helpful. Help me get straightened out help me to rebook the reservation, but then now is fast forward to yesterday. I came into the hotel. I was greeted very nicely by this beautiful smell in the hallway Like a pine tree Christmas tree good thing which I didn't know was an air freshener I thought at first was the Christmas tree in the hallway.. The girl at the front desk, Emily she was just filling in for her mother, which I didn't know that at first, but she was very professional very outgoing greet you. Good evening welcome when you come in the door explain who I was what I needed she ends up being able to give me a room like two doors from the actual entrance at the back at the handicap entrance. So my John didn't have to walk too far since you don't been sitting for almost 3 hours in the car to get here. It was tough so then we got the wrong. I got settled came down and asked her several questions she had no problem the girl that was doing the cleanup she her name was Donna. She was working and it was her birthday like hello don't even take your birthday off wow I then talk with her for a bit to explain some things about the hotel. Everything is fresh clean bright it's beautiful. I'm sure it looks just as good when it's not decorated for Christmas as it does today it's all decorated people, Christmas, decorations and trees and bows and this fake present under the tree. Everything was just amazing so far so now I'm having breakfast and I got to sleep late for the first time, I can't say how long but breakfast has it starts off with a waffle station then it has four different kinds of fresh juice then it has a cooler that has chocolate milk in it. It has fresh yogurt, cottage cheese, boiled eggs, regular sticks of cheese then they have cold cereal. They have hot cereal. They have fresh yogurt that you can make buffets with they have things and stuff they have three kinds of fresh fruit. They have a bread station that has bagels and English muffins and toast in it with peanut butter and jelly butter Have a microwave for heating. Then their hot station has bacon and sausage, and it also has cheese omelettes and scrambled eggs this morning if two kinds of fresh coffee, hot water for coconut tea. I mean, if you can't find something for breakfast here to eat then you have a problem I had a fresh buttermilk waffle with bacon. Everything looks delicious. Looks amazing fresh I mean this has been absolutely my number one experience in hotel and the best Western of all the times I've stayed I really enjoyed this one if they were all cookie cutter, I would be doing great. I think at one time we did stay at one of the one in Pennsylvania, and that was fantastic as well, but it's nice. You can go more than one and more than one state and it's just the same. I will definitely be back here again up here for a friendly family party tonight, but we're staying till tomorrow so we can have a real short brief vacation and get some sleep without eating anyways and being bothered and stuff. it's also literally a stone stove from the highway exit you cannot go wrong by coming off and using this as a rest stop is definitely something you should come to check out is not till 12 so I mean you have no excuse not to lay in bed. Take your time get some breakfast go back and relax and everything is just top-notch here. Also forgot to put up top all the employees address so professional in the beautiful royal blue best western shirts, nice pair of black pants and sneakers also into a swimming pool, which I'm sure we won't get time to use this time as we're getting super late last night and my husband was very tired and pain and today we have the party, but I will definitely come back and try the pool next time

On the other hand the owner was completely overwhelming he would not stop talking to us during breakfast. My family and I wanted to talk about the wedding the night before and plan the day to do some sight seeing around the area, but we couldn't get a single word in with each other, because the owner so obnoxiously kept talking. He had to be the center of attention the whole time. Eventually some of us tried to have a side conversation but the owner kept talking to the others. We then had to talk louder to hear one another so the owner talked even louder. We all felt so overwhelmed after breakfast! In order to plan the day everyone had to congregate in my room with the door closed to get a talking moment away from him. We were so exasperated after that morning. I am so sorry to say this, but the owner has to be made aware of himself and future guests have to be made aware of this as well. About the food. We were served bacon and french toast. Although delicious one would think eggs and fruit would be at least be an option at a Bed and Breakfast.
