We have stayed at the Sundowner twice now and both times we had excellent experiences. The rooms are beautiful and well adorned and outfitted with anything you think you might need. Each room we stayed in had 2 queen beds in 2 bedrooms, with a futon couch that converted to another bed in the living area. In that living room, we also had an efficiency kitchen and refrigerator and a remote-controlled fireplace. The beds are super comfortable and you are within walking distance of the downtown area. I definitely recommend you bring a cooler stocked with snacks since there is no food service on site. You also get access to a pool, fire pit and kayaks and paddle boards (with oars and life vests too) to use right there on the lake. A favorite of ours in Lake George! Not inexpensive, but worth it! read more

I am baffled by some of the negative reviews, as our stay was very pleasant. We found this place to be a hidden gem, which was a pleasant surprise! We had to cancel numerous travel plans due to tropical storm, and ended up booking Lake George at the last minute. At the Sundowner, we booked a "suite." Initially, upon arrival, it looked like a motel. However, upon opening the door to our room, we were very pleasantly surprised by the space we would be living in for a week. We essentially had a small apartment with a kitchen, everything was Adirondack and rustic themed, the furniture was knotty pine, floor-to-ceiling wood, and everything screamed "Lake/Mountain Vacation." It was a nice place to be. The room was recently redone, and it was obvious. It was also spotlessly clean. The staff were polite and courteous, they were responsive, and they enforced the rules and expectations of all patrons, which made for a great stay. The pool and hot tub were nice. The private beach, although small, was well-appointed with kayaks to borrow for free, and the dock out back made for great nightly fishing. Yes, the walls are thin and we had a loud family above us at one point. We brought this up with the staff and it was addressed. We did not experience it again. The staff were quite helpful. The location is a 5 minute walk to the village, making everything accessible. We would visit again in a heartbeat! read more

After checking in and realizing there were no chain or deadbolt locks on either of my two outside doors, maintenance came to install two locks while I waited (why weren't they there to begin with?!). When I notified the owner (as I had booked through Air BNB), I got a defensive response, and my concerns were dismissed ("this is the Adirondacks, it's safe!"). Besides the locks, I found the room to be dated, with older fixtures, a lukewarm shower, and dirty floors. I booked this trip to celebrate my daughter's high school graduation. Unfortunately, two weeks before our scheduled stay, I became seriously ill and was prescribed multiple antibiotics in hopes of recovering in time. Just two days before our departure, I relapsed and felt worse than ever. I reached out to the host, Robert, to see if we could reschedule, especially since there were rooms available in late August and September. Despite explaining the situation and offering a doctor's note, as well as having my doctor willing to speak with him directly, Robert refused to accommodate any changes and strictly enforced his no-refund, no-cancellation policy. After multiple attempts to resolve the issue with both Robert and Airbnb, it became clear that Robert had no concern for my well-being or that of my family. I was also concerned about the health of other guests, as I was highly contagious at the time. Feeling I had no choice, and unwilling to lose the money I paid, I made the five-hour trip to Lake George while battling a 101-degree fever, strep throat, and cellulitis. When we arrived, we were shocked by what we saw. We had expected to stay at someone's personal home, maybe with a few other guests, something more like a bed and breakfast. Instead, it turned out to be a motel with over 50 rooms/units. The parking situation was a nightmare. If you drive a nice car, I wouldn't recommend bringing it, spaces are extremely tight, and navigating the lot requires weaving around awkward turns just to get in and out. Robert's photos are extremely misleading and don't reflect the true condition of the property. The exterior was completely outdated and unkempt. While the room was nicely decorated, it was far from clean. The windows were dirty, the TV was covered in fingerprints, and the fans were caked with dust. The fireplace glass hadn't been cleaned, and the bathroom was unpleasant. To top it off, when the kids went to lie down, they found potato chips scattered along the side of the bed. The pool and hot tub were extremely dirty, giving the impression that no one was maintaining the property at all. We did our best to make the most of the trip. In the mornings, my fever would go down and my throat felt manageable, so I was able to enjoy a few moments with my family. But by midday, the fever would return, and I was back in bed. One morning, I went to the front desk because the kids wanted to go kayaking. The group before us had just returned their equipment, and without any cleaning or disinfecting, the staff immediately handed us the same paddles and life jackets. The same thing happened when we returned ours, no sanitation whatsoever. Knowing I was contagious, it's unsettling to think my germs were likely passed on to the next guests. Robert, you claim to be a "family man," but just like your misleading photos, that couldn't be further from the truth. According to the staff, you're never on-site, and honestly, it shows. Instead of being a responsible host, you seem more focused on manipulating people into booking with you, only to hit them with excessive and unreasonable policies, like charging $30 if someone forgets to wash a single dish. While your housekeepers aren't dishwashers, your guests certainly shouldn't be cleaning up after the previous ones either. If you actually showed up and took responsibility for the property, maybe it wouldn't be in such poor condition. And for the record, the most laughable part of this entire experience, more than you calling yourself a "host" is your threat to call the cops on me. I was so angry about how you treated me and my family that I told you I wanted to cough right in your kid's face....just to give you a taste of what it feels like to have your plans and special moments completely ruined, the way you ruined my daughter's weekend. I'm pretty sure the cops would've laughed in your face for wasting their time with something so ridiculous. Bottom line: I would not recommend this place to anyone--for many reasons. read more

MAJOR WOW. Seems to be some kind of family owned motel with incredibly friendly staff. We had a really amazing stay here and my expectations were really beyond exceeded. Upon entering what I believed to be our little room, I was truly delighted to find a really well decorated and GIANT accommodation equipped with every thing we needed. Full service kitchen, stove, microwave, sink, fridge. + couch, nice sized TV + beautiful wood counter space with chairs + huge king sized bedroom looking out at a really pretty view + giant lake with kayak rentals. This place is like some kind of 4 star hotel being wrongfully advertised as a 3 star motel. For the price too?! I mean this was a steal. It was clean, like very clean, like cleaner than some fancy hotels I've been in, and tons of towels. And It's walking distance from everything touristy you'd want to see in lake George I was really happy with this lodging. One complaint I have is that one night we didn't have hot water AT ALL and we had to take cold showers. It was hot by the morning though. Not sure what that was about. I booked on Airbnb. It was listed as a lakefront cabin, however showing up we find a motel room. This was very misleading. We didn't want to be in a motel. There were kids being loud, firecrackers going off. A kids birthday across the way. The room was not soundproof! The room was clean and recently refreshed. New coffee maker, fridge, stovetop and bathroom was new. The semi-private patio deck had a large gas bbq, it was very clean! If you're with kids this is great for you, if you want peace and quiet go elsewhere. Airbnb charged a cleaning fee too although this is a motel! Surprised the front desk area hasn't been updated. It's very beat up and dingy. Was scared to go to our room. read more

The king suite was beautiful BUT after cranking thheat up and going to dinner to let the room warm up, we returned to a still freezing room. Office closed at 5pm and we NEVER SAW IT OPEN again all weekend. Had to leave our keys in a drop box. We had to run to Walmart at 9:30 to buy a space heater and a second one the next day. I know we stayed off season, mid-October. This place is decent. There are lots of rules at check-in, but nothing crazy. They sell ice, firewood, and smores ingredients at the office. On weekends, you can borrow paddleboards or boats by leaving your license to obtain the oars and life jackets. The beach area is very small. There are a handful of boats to use. There is a swing and lots of chairs and grills off the beach, as well as a firepit. The pool and hottub are gated off, just before the grass and beach. The hot tub was warm, but the pool is not heated. It was still open in October. There is a pretty sitting area with padded lawn furniture off the pool. The parking lot is tight. The spaces are small,and if cars are parked on both sides, it's a tight squeeze to get by. I can not imagine a full lot! Spaces are not room assigned. Pur room was at the end of a building, first floor. You can hear people stomping up and down the stairs. Also, we were close to the employee area. We often heard lots of conversation right outside the door. And the people in the room above us had heavy feet walking around. The room itself is very pretty and updated. We were supplied with everything we needed. It was fairly clean, however quite dusty. The fans were very dirty. I had to clean the ceiling to use it. It got quite warm in our room so I didn't need it. The bed is OK. Not the most comfortable as it's quit worn and springy. The bathroom has a strange sliding door, with a hook lock that can easily be unlatched. Hot water was awesome. Water pressure was great. Jacuzzi tub was perfect. Location was great!! We were at one end of Canada street. A short walk to all the shops and restoration Lake George Village. Only a short drive to Bolton Landing and Prospect Mountain. Location was everything! We felt safe in our room and walking all over. Sitting by the water was beautiful, although a bit chilly and rainy. This could easily have been 5 stars if the was cleaner and our room wasn't near the stairs and employees. read more

They wouldnt let us extend our check out from 10 am to 11 am even though check in is 3 pm !! And after we stayed two nights and spent $500+ here. They also wouldn't us use the facilities or the lake equipment after our 10 am check out !! We had to leave. Don't stay here. My family of 5 has been staying in the same hotel room with 2 queens beds and 1 bathroom for years. The space got very cramped, so we found the hidden gem of the Sundowner! Our room, 227, had a kitchen, living room, and 2 bedrooms with 2 queen beds, a walk-in closet, and a beautiful, clean bathroom!! This was perfect and ideal for my family. The whole room had a very nice lake and woody theme, almost like a cabin. The pool and hot tub was gorgeous and the beach area near the lake was the perfect view! The staff was very generous. The BF and I come up to Lake George every Labor Day Weekend and stay at the Sundowner. It's nothing too schnazzy but it's clean, directly on the lake and in close proximity to the main downtown drag with bars, restaurants and shops. A bunch of motels line the strip and this one is a little farther uptown. Fine with me - I prefer to be a 15 minute walk away from the noise and activity instead of in the thick of things. Especially for a quiet getaway from loud city life. Every room has a fridge and a private outdoor porch area with chairs and tables. There is also plenty of parking on-site which is a nice perk because you'll need a car to drive to most of the good boat rental/hiking spots. The outdoor amenities here are spot on. There is a hot tub, pool and sandy beach area right on the lake with lounge chairs. You can grab any of their paddle boats or kayaks and bring it right into the lake. Having this all available within 5 feet of our hotel room always makes our trip easy and relaxing. All of this comes at a very low price tag. Even on a holiday weekend, a room won't run you much past 100-120 bills/night. You get what you are paying for - it's not one of the fanciest hotels around but definitely gets the job done. read more

We've been staying here for 5 years. Both event (car show) weekends and non event weekends. Like many of the places in Lake George, this place is not a Ritz or Waldorf. Here's the pros: lakefront - kayaks are free to use for guests and there's a small beach; free grills to use in picnic area; cute Adirondack style decor added to rooms (new this year!); pool AND hot tub - always great for relaxing; convenient Canada Street location (critical for a good car show weekend.) Now on to the cons: crappy beds - I'm not 20 anymore and need a decent quality bed, it's hard to get a good night's sleep on these beds. Crappy towels, thin and small generally, but you can get plenty of extras if you need. Terrible WiFi- hopefully it just gets overloaded when the place is packed but who knows, if you need to work over a VPN or stream any videos, good luck! This year for car show was particularly annoying for us as we learned upon check in that only one car was allowed per room. (We've almost always brought multiple in the past without a problem.) This happened to be coupled with a rise in room rates (double ugh) and the morning coffee isn't even available in the office anymore. Lame. We'll be trying to find a different place for next year's car show. Anyway, if you're not in Lake George for an event, this is a decent find if the cons don't bother you. read more

We liked this place. It's clean and cute. It's upstate NY, this place is everything this area is. The Adirondack theme and location are perfect. We walked into town. There is Uber but it's not necessary because the walk is so easy and full of great stops. I'm happy we supported this family owned business. They are welcoming and helpful. I'd come back. My family had an amazing time staying at the newly renovated Sundowner this past weekend for Winter Fest. We stayed in room 103 which had 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and a small kitchen that had everything we needed to make a small meal to save some money on lunch and dinner. The beds and pillows and blankets were super comfortable and it felt just like being at home. My daughter actually said her favorite part was "her room". The Adirondack decor made us feel less like we were staying in a motel and more like we were in an actual cabin. The staff at the front desk were so kind. Without even asking they brought over a heater because the temperature was expect to drop into the negatives over night. We were plenty warm. The pressure and hot water in the bathroom was superb and there were plenty of towels. Checking in and out was a breeze. It's proximity to the lake and town was exactly what we were looking for but it was also distant enough to not be disturbed by bustle of town. We look forward to staying again in the summer months when we can take advantage of the proximity to the lake and pool. Highly recommend to anyone looking to book here. I got this hotel last minute on a weekend, so I shouodnt really complain. The room was dated, like many of the Lake George motels. Bed was firm and comfy, shower had great pressure and got really hot. AC kept the room nice and cool on the 90 degree plus days. Theres a small beach and dock. The sitting area before the beach was pleasant, and had it not been rainy the fire pit looked as if it could have been very inviting. Heres the cons: no microwave in the room! WTF? At over $200 a night thats inexcusable... Also there was a large group of renters next to us that were very loud and very drunk. With so many children in the motel Im surprised the staff didnt ask them to settle down. I mean screaming at midnight loud...oh well... The pool also looked great, though we didnt swim. In a last minute pinch this place was ok. But proper planning would have produced a better place to stay... I will say the staff was SUPER friendly! Rip off artists! Don't ever think their gonna help you or get back to you. We had been yearly visitors to this hotel. Upon arrival asked if we could check in early. They said no problem... give us an hour.. we gave them longer still not ready.. no big deal. We noticed the hotel was empty. Asked if we could upgrade room to be closer to water. Was told no. Nothing available. I looked online.. plenty of rooms available for our two day stay. Brought it to desk clerks attention. She said online is not correct. If you try to book online it wont work. Well we stood right there.. with our phone and booked online. It worked. I said just charge me the price difference (tho there wasn't prices dropped drastically based on low occupancy) she said no! Said we were being room hogs booking 2 rooms. ?? You kidding? We just did this right in front of you. Place is a joke. Front desk no help. They put us on phone with reservations lady.. she was totally rude. We were charged for 2 rooms for 2 nights. So irritated we waited to speak with manager in morning. He was a no show.. we dropped our keys off at desk after one night! Never again! Charged alotta money and a whole lot of hassle. Beware of their business practices. read more

The place was very nice and clean but it's advertised as a lakefront cabin and it's a "motel" room decorated inside to look like a cabin. It's very misleading unless you really look on line to see it's a motel that has been remodeled and converted. We stayed in the 1 bedroom lakefront room with a nice balcony to sit out and look at the lake. Inside was decorated nice, cozy and a comfortable bed. The bar was a miss. It would be better to have a sofa and a couple chairs there instead. In our minds we thought we were staying in a lakefront cabin so it was a big disappointment to see it was a motel. I rented through Airbnb and I did not like that I had to give a credit card. Everything was paid and done through Airbnb. The people that work there were very nice. Parking is crazy. It's very loud mainly from the other "motels" next to it. We were not familiar with Lake George, I'd stay again on the lake but on the other side away from downtown. Only benefit there is we could walk to breakfast and dinner. If you know going in it's a converted motel then you will enjoy it. Booked the king room. Walked into the main room to mismatched furniture with a couch which was stained with a blanket over it, and a futon. The wall behind the futon was scraped and in need of plaster from where the futon was scraping the wall. There was a musty smell. There was no ac and the room was controlled from somewhere so the vents were dirty. The bedroom had two beds that were oddly facing each other. The blinds were damaged and one in the main room was missing. The bathroom sink was green with white stains. The room in all needed updating and a new paint job as the walls were stained. The kitchen area had two refrigerators that didn't match. The wifi was spotty. Was going to the call the lobby, but there was no phone. The only good thing was that they are on the lake. read more

Overall a very simple place to stay that is within walking distance of town. Check in was fast- friendly staff. Room was simple, clean with the exception of a slight smell of mold, a small fridge, old style crt tv. No coffee maker in the room, or closets. Wifi was free, and worked pretty well throughout the property. It was a bit weak by our room though. The Sundowner has beach front property, but the beach is small(maybe 50'). It also has a pier right in the middle of it which guest without boats cannot go on. It takes away from the beach and view. The beach quickly overcrowds seeing it's so small, and that is when this motel has vacancy. There was a pool as well, and it also fills up quickly. The area was well maintained, and as long as simple and convenient is ok with you, you should be fine here. read more

My family and I have been stranded with out a place to stay during peak season in the fall (look up Gauthiers Saranac Lake reviews if you want the full story). This was the only affordable place at the time that had a room available. Yes it probably wasn't the best looking room; you get what you pay for. The reason I'm giving this place 5 stars was the excellent customer service. We had our kayaks with us on a trailer and we were worried someone may steal them (they're handmade and made of wood-priceless) and the owner offered to store them in his garage for the nights we stayed which was the kindest thing any hotel has done for us. Very sweet guy. Made sure we were fully accommodated and happy with our stay. Customer service is no doubt 5 stars. read more

Our preferred place to stay in Lake George is the Surfside. However, the last seven years we tend to travel and a larger group of family and require at least 4 to 5 rooms. We started staying at the sundowner because The Surfside doesn't usually have enough commendations for such a large party. My husband planned a getaway for us this coming weekend and booked it only three days ago. Unfortunately, we had to cancel for family emergency and are not able travel to the sundowner this weekend. My husband called to cancel the reservation and he was told there was no refund for his deposit and informed by the owner that he should've gone online to check the policy before booking. Being that he made the reservation within the 10 days of arriving, he could not receive a refund for his deposit. This was never stated when he made the reservation. Guess we will be looking tonight to find another location in Lake George that can accommodate us as a large group for next summer. Customer service obviously is very poor. The only reason we basically stayed at this motel is because they always have rooms availability. It's not saying much for the accommodations though. The rooms are very outdated and smell musty, the bathrooms are extremely shabby with leaking showers and stained toilets, there's minimal poolside furniture, The Wi-Fi doesn't work, we always have to ask for towels, the parking is very tight and limited. Let's be realistic, the reason why they can always accommodate our need for so many rooms is because no one wants to stay there. I hope the owner enjoys his $68 non-refundable deposit because we will not be returning with our larger party over the summer. He must really need the money! read more

Bathroom was freshly painted with a new sink vanity. Bed was very comfortable. Flat screen TV with plenty of channels if you get stuck inside due to bad weather. If you want a lake view, be sure to ask for a room with a view. Friendly front desk and housekeeping staff. My only faults would be the tiny refrigerator that sat on the floor...would have been happier if it was on a table, and no instructions on where the ice machine is. Will stay here again. read more

It was my misfortune to stay at the Rundowner from July 30 to August 4 2017. Due to availability issues we spent the night in a king room to be switched to a queen next day. The room we moved to was cramped with a double bed, furniture shabby, tv and microwave smeared with handprints. Shower stall floor was filthy hot water took 5 minutes in shower and never did come on in sink. The air conditioner had a brown liquid dried on it, which I cleaned myself. The room had a smell of cat urine too. We checked out 2 days early and nobody even noticed. Sent them an email when I got home and never got a reply. My advice to you, if you still want to go there is do NOT take room 102. read more
