I can't express enough love for this tiny little coffee shop and bakery. It's literally a hole in the wall in Kearny. As soon as you walk in you're smelling fresh bread and grounded coffee. What's better then that? Let's start with the coffee. Their coffees are not coffees, they're lattes for HALF the price. Quality coffee with steamed milk. For like 2 bucks. Come on now. Breakfast sandwiches!!! Ugh, look no further. They have a traditional Portuguese sandwich, Tosta Mista. It's homemade fresh sliced white bread with ham and Muenster cheese. Pressed to perfection. It's the closest to an authentic Mista you're gonna get without buying a plane ticket to Portugal. All their pastries are always fresh and delicious. Their natas are fantastic. The broa is my favorite in town. So crunchy and fresh. It's like a whole wheat crusty bread. So good with butter for breakfast. All your essential food groups, butter and carbs right? Besides the fresh bread, pastries, sandwiches and coffees, the service is always fantastic. These women behind the counter do their job and they do it WELL. These clients come in hungry and they serve them while telling jokes and being super delightful. That's one of the main reasons I love coming here. Now you can sit and eat here, plenty of tables. If you're gonna go in and grab something quick, I suggest parking in the back. There's a little lot there and a back entrance that most people don't know about. This cafe is right on a main avenue and parking is terrible so the little lot in the back is a life saver. Okay, so let me set the scene: We're waiting to order at the counter. Meanwhile, an adorable grandma is struggling to find change to pay for her shot of espresso. Hubby gallantly steps in and offers to cover the tab. The friendly staff pooh-poohs him: "Oh no, don't worry. Dona Elsa will pay when she comes in for her coffee tomorrow." I ADORED witnessing that and instantly fell in serious like. Love, I reasoned, would only happen if the baked goods were as enchanting as this first impression... At any rate, hubby, kid and I were here primarily for some Egg Tarts. 'Cause I can no longer get on the 1 & 9 without detouring in either Newark, Elizabeth, and now, Kearny for some of these custardy, flaky cups of goodness. We grabbed a couple Regular and couple Chocolate. Yes, Chocolate!!! Just based on appearance, these look like any other Egg Tart, but then you take a bite and realize there's a thin layer of melty chocolate on the bottom. Woa. Pinch me! Seriously though, these are delicious, boasting an ultra-flaky crust and rich custard. Look for the ones nestled in brown cupcake wrappers. As for the Regular Egg Tarts, they were good too, but the Chocolate ones stole my heart. We also got two small, rustic round loaves of Broa, aka the Cornbread that reviewers rave about; one classic and one with chorizo. The former was dense, faintly sweet, and crusty, while the latter was packed with thin slices of savory, crisped sausage. Some of the most uniquely delicious bread I've eaten in a long time. I don't think it's made with only cornmeal, but rather, some sort of mix that includes wheat flour... All I can say is that with a generous slather of butter, we were in carb heaven. Freezes well, too. Fwiw, hubby got a shot of espresso and was into it. And he is a coffee snob. Big time. Bottom line: That enchanting first impression absolutely evolved to love. This little cafe cum bakeshop is clearly a popular neighborhood hub, which gets me every time. And the Egg Tarts are quality. In fact, I'd venture to say their flaky crust, in particular, could compete with Teixeira. Yeah, that's right. Plus, I need more of that Broa in my life. Lots more. Ultimately, this has that intangible special something that may just make it a regular stop for me. read more

This is an excellent bakery. I usually order broa which is Portuguese cornbread that ferments from the inside out. This is the best broa in Kearny and it has lots of tough competition. They also have tasty water bread which are wheat rolls that often sell out so be sure to arrive early in the morning. Even if you are unfamiliar with Portuguese food you should give this place a try. Their coffee is also wonderful. read more

Sounds like a Portuguese bakery, looks like a Portuguese bakery, and pumps out pastries like a Portuguese bakery, but this place does something MORE than the usual Portuguese bakery: Pasteis de Nata (Custard Cups) infused with chocolate! Chocolate lovers (unfortunately, that does not include me) -- rejoice! You can bite into a tasty custard cup that has a layer of chocolate on the bottom. Even my friend who's not a huge fan of custard cups admitted she was quite taken by this confectionary twist. I'm not a fan of chocolate so I can only judge them on their regular Custard Cups: to be honest, I still prefer Teixeira's, but if you want to change it up, this is the place to try. read more

Being Portuguese and all makes me very picky when it comes to broa and this place has by far the best broa ive ever had in the USA. The natas especially the chocolate ones are to die for. LOVE this place! It's my little hidden gem on Kearny Ave. I've been coming here for 3 years, mainly for breakfast and an afternoon snack...oh yeah and COFFEE :) Let's start with how amazing their lates and espressos are. And this summer they finally started serving iced coffees and lates! Delicious! You will never want to go back to Dunkin or Starbucks. Aside from coffee, they also make a really good Portuguese style lemon tea (with just the lemon peels and hot water, but you have to make sure you order with lemon peels only, not slices). They have a variety of breads inside a nice display of baskets. Love their "Pao d'avo" (water bread). I usually like to order the "tosta mista" (pressed ham and cheese on a roll) or egg whites with cheese and peppers on a small wheat roll for breakfast. I especially love their "pastel de nata" (custard cup)! Crispy crust and creamy sweet filling made to perfection. I've been lucky enough to get them fresh out the oven on some days! They taste even better served warm! Also, on Saturdays they make this coconut cake for only 6 bucks. Amazing! And I don't even like coconut, but it's worth giving a shout out on yelp since it's that good! I wouldn't really recommend the cupcakes or chocolate deserts. The few times I've needed a chocolate fix they never tasted too fresh. But everything else is delish! Decor: pretty small inside with about 10 tables. Bright Miami Art Deco colors, and really awesome portraits on the wall, a few depicting Portuguese culture. Ambiance: people usually take their food to go. Tables get packed quickly. I like the Euro homey feel I get when I'm there, surrounded by a rush of people speaking English, Portuguese and Spanish in a small space. I love it! Service: everyone is always very nice and orders are done fairly quickly. Tip: mornings are always packed! Unless you don't mind waiting on line for about 15 mins, call in advance and pick up your order (which is usually what I do). Anything else, just ask :) read more

This review is based on my opinion of their broa, a type of Portuguese bread. We pick some up every so often. It seems to be a bit sweeter than broa from other bakeries, or even Portugal. People usually eat broa with food, but I eat this one as-is. It's the absolute best! read more

I was told this cafe shop had my fave Portuguese pastry- Nata! I thought it was going to be an easy walk in and walk out. Boy was I wrong !! I was third in line on a Friday - 530pm. I left the cafe shop at 555pm - There was only one girl attending the register, taking orders, making espressos, lattes, Capps, sandwiches etc. The owner could have helped her but decided not to ! And it was so annoying because the cafe shop is tiny and customers were coming in one after the other - I felt trapped ! Anyways bottom line - service was slow , the "Galao" ( Portuguese espresso with steamed milk) was good - the nata pastry ( custard ) was not up to par but edible. read more

I found out about this place recently when I was looking for a spot to buy Portuguese broad (corn bread). My Portuguese friend taught me how to make cataplana, but without the corn bread, it just isn't the same. Just stopped by this bakery this morning, and I'm officially in love. Their corn bread is smaller than the ones I've tried in Toronto in the past, but I actually like that better. Easier to cut, and each chunk is guaranteed to have some crust on it. Perfect for dunking into the cataplana liquid! This bread is crusty on the outside, and dense and soft on the inside. My husband will be lucky if any of the bread is left by the time I make cataplana for dinner. This place is worth a stop! Thank goodness I don't live close by, or I'd really be in trouble. read more

One of the best cups of coffee I have ever had!! One of their delicious steaming cups of coffee with a buttered role is all that it takes to make me happy. Very friendly staff, always smiling. I can never get as good a cup of coffee anywhere else. They beat Dunkin Donuts by about 100 points. read more

It's a small place but comfy, it smelled like bread dough when I came in. The custard cupcake was done right and they also steamed the milk that was mixed with the cocoa I ordered, so it was pretty good. I'd probably try out their different breads next time. read more

I'm not sure what some people are complaining about, but I'm first generation Portuguese, and I have to say this is the best Portuguese bakery in town (and arguably, the best bakery). Everything is always good and fresh, especially in the morning. If you come in at 5 or 6 in the evening, do not expect anything to still be at the peak of freshness, as bakers only work in the morning hours; it'll still be good but won't be at its best. The place is always packed especially in the mornings, everyday of the week. That tells you something. I recommend the tosta mista (grilled muenster cheese and imported ham on a Portuguese roll), a Bacon egg & cheese on a pão de avó (traditional peasant bread), pastel de nata (chocolate, Belém, or traditional flavors), Bola de Berlim (with sweet egg or sweet cream), and the almighty Galão (a traditional Portuguese breakfast drink made with steamed milk and a shot of espresso). Everything is delicious at this place, but make sure you come in the morning. Long lines, but definitely worth the wait. If you have time, have a seat and enjoy your tosta mista with your galão (the most traditional of all the breakfast options) and just let yourself be transported to a small café in one of the best countries of Europe! read more

The Latte and bread is delicious. But the best part is the service, not all the chicks but the two blondes Deborah and Isabelle are the best. Deborah makes the best coffees and she's the kindest one that gets orders right and a plus that she the onky one who understands me. Isabelle good too, she makes awesome sandwiches.
