These guys have been here for many years. My sister is 32 and thats how long I've known this spot. Fully recommend. Great service. Always clean. Always fresh. I haven't been in Kearny NJ for a while and on my way to Montclair decided to look for a bakery to get some Portuguese pastries. I Googled Portuguese bakeries and found Arcos close by. I took a detour for about 5 minutes off 280 West and did a quick pit stop for baked goods. They have a indoor and outdoor seating, a good selection of cakes, coffee, tea, sandwiches, breakfast and pastries. They have cannolis, fruit tarts, brownies, macaroons, and the list goes on. The staff was very friendly, it's clean and the prices were really in expensive. I picked up a few pasteis de nata, doradinho, pata de viada, some kind of chicken pastry. I tasted one of the custard pastries when I came home and it was great. I would definitely recommend them and will be back when I'm in the area. read more

Place usually has at least a short line. It's a neighborhood favorite for many people. Good coffee and pastries. I also hear they have good lunch specials on occasion. I was on the hunt for some goodies yesterday to bring for a friend and my last resort was Arcos. They're open late which is the convenient part. Parking is terrible here, it was around 6 o'clock and I had to pray I found street parking nearby. They had everything I was looking for which is why I give the 3 stars. I got some savory chicken beef and shrimp Portuguese empanadas, a chorizo and cheese bread and a chocolate croissant. The empanadas were okay, nothing to write home about. The chorizo bread lacked in flavor and was over baked. The croissant was the highlight, if I came here again that's what I would get. The reason I left so frustrated is because this is a Portuguese bakery, I came in and thinking the woman was Portuguese herself, I spoke in the language when ordering. There's a lot of bakeries in town where the women mainly speak Portuguese so I thought it would be easier for them if I spoke it too. This woman was completely Hispanic and spoke a Spanish dialect I couldn't understand for the life of me. When she asked me something and I couldn't answer, I tried in English. Nothing! Its just crazy to me how they wouldn't have someone bilingual working the register. I would imagine people who only speak English come here too. It was just mind boggling. *disclaimer* this was my first time trying Portuguese pastries, so I don't have a point of reference other than my love for European baked goods and butter and sugar and bread... These pastries were soo tasty! And cheap! Everything we ordered (see pic) came out to about $8. The only thing that didn't blow me away was the egg custard, because the crust tasted like it was made with cheap fat and definitely not butter (it left a waxy coating on the roof of my mouth...not great). ...I like this place. Its a wee-trip to Lisbon, PT. It's a local spot. Most speak two languages which may not be English. What's great about it is that no one rushes you out the door. There are plenty of marble table tops and dark heavy chairs that are comfortable enough for the time it takes to eat such luscious custard pastries. ...We enjoyed a Portuguese roll, pressed sandwich with Ham and cheese and pastries with a cafe-au-lait today. Yet, there are other hot options available for breakfast, sandwiches available for lunch and additional main course meal specials for dinner as well. In fact, I see many fish dishes as an option today. The average price of $12.50 a plate. In the past, I've sent a care package of the custards with my mom back to California for a friend. RUDE staff. A HORRIBLE experience. UNSAFE. I have been coming to Arcos for years (since I was a child). I used to love this cafe, but it seems things have gone downhill lately from the looks of my last experience. I was there Tuesday, May 24th for a lunch with my mother, coming in from New York to visit her for the day. She ordered two tuna sandwiches with olives and w/ bread 'toasted' separately. What they served us was 2 pressed tuna sandwich (soggy & overheated lettuce, tomatoes and onions), when I brought this mistake up to the waitress, she told me 'that's what you ordered and that's what you get' and offered no alternative. Appalled by her combative and defensive response, we let that go and decided to look passed the horrible sandwich quality.... that was until my mom and took a bite into a WHOLE olive with the pit. The waitress put whole olives into our sandwich with no warning. My mother now has tooth soreness as a result of this idiotic decision to put whole olives into a sand-which. Not cool. Not only is it a choking hazard, but my mother almost chipped a tooth. To make matters worse, when we finally raised our concern for safety in regards to using whole olives in sandwhiches, the same lady told us it was OUR fault, for ordering olives and said, 'that's what you order, that's what you get'... we felt so taken back by her dismissive and rude comments. We decided to leave, and never come back to this place. There are other options in town, no one has to put up with this kind of behavior when they are trying to have a peaceful lunch. read more

Quite a popular bakery from the looks of it! I came here specifically for the natas (Portuguese egg tarts), and they were quite delicious. I've had the original Nate in Belem, Portugal, so my standards are pretty high. The natas were creamy on the inside, crunchy on the outside, and it was in general a great delight. Now let's talk about businesses that are quick to up their prices after being commended, but add no extra value nor other incentive for their customers... One word: This is one of those that are quick to up their prices after being applauded, but add no extra value nor other incentive for their customers to continue their patronage. Meanwhile, a profusion of more tempting eateries in livelier, more interesting locations with more engaged staff are all waving you down... Final word: Read the above. Extra words: You don't suddenly change the price of a nugget you call fish cake from 75 cents to a buck only shy of two cents..., unless you increase its size accordingly, even a tiny bit. This abrupt increase in pricing could have been limited to 10 -15 cents, but by a quarter is a tad much. Some of us customers know "fair" and understand the cost of maintaining business and the bottom line... But a sudden jump from $7.50 for a 10 piece to $10 bucks for the same size (if not actually smaller) seems a greedy move and so uncool. I wouldn't go to this town just for these lumps that actually mistook themselves as gold, as there are other fishes in the gastronomic sea. I wouldn't even go to Kearny anymore for this venue alone, as I do with other places even when their food isn't so good, so long as the area's lovely. Tasty galao's, check. Extremely rude customer service, check, check, check, check! Came here with a group of 10 for some pastries and coffee. We placed our orders and sat down. 5 minutes later and some orders are served. 15, 20 minutes passed and the drinks still hadn't been delivered. Some of us were sipping and almost done. When an employee came to the table we kindly asked how much longer or if they were out we could order something else. The response we got was "It's too many orders, they're coming out!" Oh no she didn't! Whatever we let it slide. Moral of the story they are very understaffed and service isn't streamlined. Which causes stress on their employees causing their employees to be rude to customers. But eh, just keep it moving there are plenty of other cafes. Thought this place was super basic. Ordered a hot chocolate and it was literally just milk and powered chocolqt. No whip cream, no nothing. If I wanted hot milk I'd have made it at home. The soup was basic. Didn't come with any bread or anything. It seems like the owners don't understand that the details count and ther are countless other places out there to get good food for the same price ;) get your act together. I was passing by the area when I saw Arcos and decided to pick up a few goodies. First of all, if you don't speak Portuguese, good luck getting service there. The ladies behind the counter are very rude. I'm still not quite too sure why they skipped me in the line but even the lady behind me looked confused and asked me if I was in line first. I said it was ok, but certainly no apology from the arcos worker. In addition to the egg custards tarts, I bought a coconut pastry. It was cold, stale, and hard. A warming cup of soup on a cold day at Arco's Bakery, Kearny NJ It was my first time visiting Arco's Portuguese Bakery in Kearny, NJ and it was cold enough to have their home-made chicken soup with little beads of pasta, chicken, celery and carrots. But the best part was their Portuguese rolls. (they call them mollett)They are so light and crispy. I decided to dip my bread in the soup, and eat it that way. It was awesome! We had to have a 'little' dessert so we tried the merangue cookie that was so light it actually melted in your mouth. This was a wonderful spot for a quick, home-style lunch but I will have to come back for some of the outstanding pastries I saw in the pastry case. read more

A Portuguese bakery that i have been going to since i was in high school. It is walking distance from anywhere on Kearny Ave for lunch. Anything on the menu is affordable and delicious. Their coffee and breakfast is spot on, there is always on a line to the door in the mornings. They bake everything fresh on premises and its very family oriented. Their not an ordinary bakery with just bread and coffee, they make everything from lunch to dinner. During the spring or summer you can sit outside with friends and enjoy a coffee or even your meal under the umbrella. Everything is very well priced and i never have complaints.
