I first heard of this bakery from a family friend and I had to come try it out! As soon as you walk in, you're immediately exposed to a world of sweets, treats and baked goods. The front staff works fast and efficiently, which is great because this place gets super busy in the morning-noon hours. They don't mess up your order or fold over even when there's a lot of customers trying to get in and order. Considering this was my first time here, I wanted to try some variety bakery menu staples to taste. I ordered croquetas de jamon (croquettes), pastelitos de carne (Cuban Picadillo-filled pastry) and toasted bread with butter! I wanted to also order and try the papa rellena (fried stuffed potato) but was disheartened to learn that they actually don't make and sell those at this bakery. I was really impressed with how consistently good the food was. The pastelito de carne (Cuban picadillo-filled pastry) was amazing and easily the best part of what I ordered. The bread with butter was toasted, but still soft and buttery on the inside which means it was made well. The croquettes were decent but could be better. Definitely one of the best bakeries in New Jersey! I stopped by here on a Sunday morning and it was so busy but in less than two minutes I was attended and in less than 5 minutes I was in and out. The staff is very friendly and have a great attitude. I was able to talk to one of the family members that owns this business and they were very genuine and gave me the history of this bakery, which was very impressive. The empanadas or "pastelitos", as some people call it, were literally the best I have ever had. They were truly full of flavor and stuffed, there was no extra air in the empanadas. The croquetas were so delicious! My mouth just got watery thinking about them, to be honest. I ordered a couple of more pastries but I won't give them away, just know that they will blow your tastebuds away, that's how much I enjoyed them! The PASTELES are excellent, as are the crackers, coffee, and bread ... ... but the pastries are horrible. Ordered a box of "señoritas" (the Cuban version of the French "mille-feuille"). The whole point of this pastry is (a) the creamy, custard filling, and (b) the moist, flaky dough. These people used cheap, overly sweet cake frosting/merengue as the filling, and the dough was so dry I had to wash it down with water. On this last day of 2020, I was in the mood for some empanadas and drove to this establishment in the "hood". Located in Union City, NJ, this Cuban bakery was recommended by one of my family members and my go-to place for delicious pastries. Unfortunately due to lack of street parking, My partner stayed in the car. This place is amazing and reminds me of my childhood. They have so much to choose from and don't forget to get a Cuban coffee or expresso with your desserts. A line can form quick, so try to go at "off times" for no wait -otherwise just be patient & wait as it is well worth the wait! I ended up getting three varieties of their pastries. I got the pastelitos de guava, pastelitos de carne (meat pie) and croquetas de jamón (ham croquettes - Cuban style). I haven't had croquetas in years and was so deliciously awesome and warm. The meat pastilles were a bit salty. The guava pastries were just right and flaky. Amazingly the price was not expensive and came out to only $16. One of the last authentic Cuban bakeries in Hudson County! :( This place brings back nostalgia and it is always a party to my taste buds when I indulge in their pastelitos, empanadas, bread, cortaditos (expresso), señoritas (custard pastry), croquetas (croquets) and all the other absolutely delicious treats this bakery offers. I hope they do not change any of their recipes and heaven forbid they ever close! Unfortunately, there really aren't too many authentic Cuban bakeries left in Hudson County. I hate fruit pastries or anything sweet with cheese except, of course, for NY style cheesecake. So when one of my coworkers brought in a box from La Gran Via the other day, I politely declined. An hour or so later, my morning protein shake wore off and I was starving. Having to choose between a Nature Valley Granola Bar and one of Jess' pastries, I decided to bite the proverbial bullet and OMG, was I happy I did. There must be 50 bakeries between my house and Union City, perhaps even more. But, like I said, it was phenomenal so last Sunday after getting the car washed, I made the trip. Parking can be a challenge but if you wait long enough a spot should open on the street. Once inside, I felt like I was transported back in time to when I was kid and my mother would take a number and wait inside the Royal Bakery in Fair Lawn. And wait I did as they were pretty much jammed. My Spanish is poor at best but I was able to order 19 of the very same pastries and a cup of coffee. Why 19, you ask? I couldn't remember how to say 20 in Spanish and diez y nueve immediately came to mind. The sweet grandma (abuela) looking woman behind the counter smiled, knowing all too well that I had reached the limit of what I could remember from Senora Shaw's 10th grade Spanish I class. Not being familiar with associated costs and mindful that they might not accept credit cards (they do), I brought $60 and hoped it was enough. The bill for all 19 and a cup of exceptional cafe con leche? $17.50. Wow. I have to say that the other 20 reviewers who all raved about this place were all absolutely correct. Be sure to get here with a little patience or a lot of luck to find parking, in case you don't feel free to use the small lot across the street. I have spend the last 25 years coming here nearly every weekend to load up my favorites which include: guava & cheese pastries, beef pastries, cheese pastries, elephant ears, croquetas, flan and tres leches cake. Oh and don't forget to get a nice strong cafe con leche to wash it all down! The best thing about this place is that it is super cheap and super delicious. Think like .30 cent pasteles, .60 cent baguette rolls, yes THAT CHEAP. This bakery is my favorite bakery! Hands down, the best authentic cuban cafe con leche. The absolute best pastelitos de carne, y pastelitos de guayaba. The empanadas are made to perfection and the croquetas kind of melt in your mouth. I order bocaditos from here whenever I have a big party. I also like their melted ham and cheese sandwiches but my absolute favorite addiction from this place is the fresh, warm cuban bread. There are different kinds...pan de agua, pan de manteca and others. My favorite is pan cangrejo de manteca. Its cuban bread shaped like over sized croissant (hence why tgey call it pan cangrejo). I eat it plain and dunked in the cafe con leche or toasted with butter, and yes you know it...dunked in the cafe con leche. Yuuuuummmmo! Of course, nothing is perfect. Although this bakery is close to it. The downside is that it crowds easily and you have to make sure to stand your ground and not let others cut you in the line because there is no real order. Also, the pastelitos de guayaba y queso (guava and cheese) are not my favorite. They tend to be a bit harder than I like and are never warm. Other than that, the service is great and I love the quaint ambiance. Its in the heart of Union City where there is a large Cuban population so going there is like taking a trip to the Carribean. The old time Cuban gentlemen chat about local and Cuban politics, and open the doors for the ladies. Then you have the older lady patrons who walk in on Sunday mornings all dolled up to order cafe con leche. I've been going there since I was a child and it always feels like home. This place is so so tiny. Literally the size of someone's bedroom. Go ahead and go in and take a number, better take one quick because even at first opening there is already a line out the door. Some get food and some are older gentleman waiting for their cafe con leche. The empanadas are amazing. I've only even had beef empanadas from this spot however, and I believe that those are the only ones they have. The also have a great pork sandwich, it's a Cuban spot after all. They also have pretty good croquets as well. They have a large assortment of pastries and things you can chose from, especially for such a small place. Although as mentioned this area is crawling with so many bakeries La Gran beats all the others. The tiny bakery located on the side street on 48th is always busy and for good reason. The always freshly baked goods are a hit and reasonably priced. My ritual when time allows is getting up early to get a ham and cheese sandwich on cuban bread. For around $20 you can get yourself a little more than a dozens worth of a variety of pastries. If placing a large order for a family party or work event I would call ahead just so that it is ready and you can get a fresh batch. If I had any complaints about the pastries, I find the empanadas to be more oily than others. A small mishap certainly overlooked by the overall greatness of this bakery. read more

What a great place! Their coffee is good, the food is amazing. My dad told me about la.Gran Via and how much he loved their empanadas. Now I have been there a few times and I really love it. Their chicken empanas were tasty and fresh and the croquetas were good too, and it wasn't too greasy. I'm not a fan of sweets but their dulce de leche cortada (I dont know how they call it) feels like home. Also, a Cheesecake for $1.25? Hell yeah. My sister had the caramelized coconut (don't know if that's the name either) and it tasted fresh and delicious. Also, their coffee is pretty good toó.
