I'm conflicted about this being a 3-star vs a 4-star joint. I've been eating BBQ daily for almost a week now a various places in Florida, Tennessee, and now Georgia. I'm well-versed in all styles and base my opinions on the standards for that style, not my personal preference (pulled pork with SC mustard-based sauce). So The Dog and I went in and ordered a pulled pork plate with mac 'n cheese and sweet puffs, plus a Supreme Scooby Snack with brisket and two sweet teas. Super charming and kind server. Quick to bring refills on sweet tea and brought me out a mess of lemons for my tea when I asked for lemon. The pulled pork plate was cold - well, not fridge-cold but room temperature cold. Even the mac 'n cheese, which was served in a Styrofoam serving cup. The sauce was excellent but the pork itself didn't have much of a smoke flavor. It was moist but due to the temperature, the fattiness of the pork was distracting. The brisket on the Scooby snack was delish. If you go, get the brisket. I enjoyed the concept of the meat on fries loaded with cheese and whatnot. We were supposed to get a free drink upon checking in with Yelp and we showed this to our server when we ordered our drink after sitting down. Yet, the drinks still wound up on the bill. She removed the price of them after we pointed this out. We did discover the desserts as we were getting ready to leave. This is where this place really shines. I got the chocolate 14-layer cake. This stuff is HOMEMADE, hand-cut, and wrapped in Saran Wrap. And it is absolutely DELICIOUS. Sinful. Fantastic! The Dog got the carrot cake - it was good but that 14-layer cake is the schizz-nit! We won't be in town long enough to try out JoMax across the street so I can't compare the two. Ultimately, I'd say this place is worth trying out - get the Scooby Snack of some sort and a slice of that amazing 14-layer cake! read more

Pulled off the Interstate for lunch and randomly found Papa Bucks. What a fortunate find! Fantastic BBQ and terrific wait staff. I got 2 meat platter with generous helpings of beef brisket and pulled pork. Exceptionally tender, light smoke flavor, perfect smoke ring on the brisket. Great bbq and great service. I am used to Kansas style bbq and this had a Carolina style sauce. If you are looking for a pit stop, fast and easy bbq joint, this is it! My daughter (who is on the hunt for the world's best chicken strips) said these strips now top her list. My wife had sweet puffs, which are sweet potato tots rolled brown sugar and cinnamon. Eaten here a few times when I visit relatives in Metter. Was mostly vegetarian one time I went here, but they have the ability to order just sides so that worked for me. Fair warning: the two-meat two-sided platter is a LOT of food. My wife and I both had leftovers, and probably both could have been satisfied with just a single platter. Had to get gas on our way home from Savannah so we picked an exit. It was lunchtime, so we decided to eat too. There were a lot of the same chains we have at home and I wanted something different. This place happened to be there. Walked in and was promptly greeted. The waitress was at the table before we even got situated. She was very friendly and honest with her suggestions. We had beef brisket (my only complaint was my pieces were pretty fatty which I have a aversion to). Potato salad was great, mac and cheese was good, fried okra was perfect, and the Brunswick stew was a little sweet for our taste buds but was still good. Just to rehash.....this place freakin rules!!! If you're in the area and a BBQ fanatic like myself it should be considered sacrilegious not to stop at Papa Bucks. Pulled Pork BBQ is moist, smokey and just the way BBQ should be. Their tableside sauce is tomato based like God intended it to be and compliments the pork just right. I have had their brisket before and it is also smokey, and moist. For sides, the Brunswick Stew is to die for. It is chock full of stuff and the stew has a slight sweetness that makes it akin to the nectar of the Gods! Service is spot on every time and the waitresses bring that extra bit of southern charm to the table, literally. Overall great restaurant! Clean and cozy. Fast and friendly service. Convenient to the interstate as well. Okay the food was flavorful! I know people are picky about their bbq, so it will probably be some personal opinion. I had the half smoked chicken with fried corn and sweet potato puffs. Chicken was so moist and the skin was wonderfully seasoned. Fried corn was my favorite. Typically think that corn is corn but this was perfectly seared and buttery. The sweet potato tots were sweetened but I like sweet. My husband was not a fan. He has pulled pork, baked beans and greens. He was impressed with the greens, which had alot of flavor. The baked beans had a little kick of mustard. The pulled pork would be up for debate. Theirs was ground fairly fine with fat to enhance flavor. We do not typically prefer this style as it tends to have a mushier consistency. The sweet and smoky sauce was awesome! They also had a vinegar based sauce. First time we had take away from Papa Bucks, I got the smoked chicken and hubby got the brisket with potato salad and baked beans. Chicken was a disappointing experience, but I almost slapped hubby down and stole his brisket!! We went back today for the brisket, potato salad and beans. So very good! The meat can be cut with a fork and the taste is amazing. I could drink the sauce! The potato salad is cold, fresh and amazing. Sour cream, dill, bacon!! Very good pulled pork...nice bark, smoke ring was there, it was juicy, and just a little sweet. We tried it on both a sandwich and a Q Tater and were pleased. They only offered type of sauce at the table, a sweet sauce, but also had Louisiana hot sauce on hand. I was pleasantly surprised with the stew as well. It wasn't very thick but had good flavor. Craving bbq, we noticed two bbq restaurants across the street from each other on our way to Atlanta from Savannah. Normally, I decide restaurants by appearance, but knowing some of the best bbq restaurants can be found in hole-in-the-wall places decided to check out yelp reviews. Not sure that worked this time. Living in Texas for over 40 years, decided on the Texas brisket (claimed customer favorite) and pulled pork. I was told they were out of ribs and chicken. I am not sure what part of Texas the owner had bbq in, but it was completely different than any bbq I have ever had. It tasted like a bottle of vinegar spilled all over the meet. The only bottle of sauce available was more vinegar based. The meat was very tender. I am not familiar with Georgia bbq, so maybe that is how it is cooked here. We had the baked beans, potato salad, cole slaw and Mac and cheese. All very good, service was very friendly, place was clean, and they had country music videos on a big screen (extra points for that.) They had a letter from Sonny, the owner of Ugg1. The bulldogs mascot and posters that were sent by him on the wall. Also, very cool. I would have preferred wood smoked meat with different options of bbq sauce. If you like tangy bbq you may love it. For desert I had the carrot cake, was nice and moist not overly sweet stomach was full but my taste buds didnt want me to stop. Food was phenomenal!!!! My Grandaughter was married recently in Metter. The reception dinner was catered by Papa Bucks BBQ. The BBQ was excellent as were the side dishes. The Brunswick stew was different than other I have eaten, but was very good. I highly recommend Papa Buck's. read more

This place stays packed and there are other BBQ joints in eyesight of the front door. Can't go wrong with this place. I am a pork fanatic and it was delicious but I had to order the beef brisket also due to its reputation around this town. REALLY HUNGY??? Try the Pigzilla... It's 3 yummy pounds of delicious pulled pork on a huge Hawaiian roll.. Only 8 men and 1 woman have pulled off this feat of gluttonous heaven. The beef brisket is fantastic and I'm saying that as someone who lives and eats texas bbq. The wait however is why I bumped it down to 4 starts. We ordered to go and after waiting 30 minutes we decided to see what's up. They said they were still waiting on a side of mac and cheese and it would be an additional 10 minutes! We stopped here because it was so convenient to I-16. We eat BBQ all over the country but expect it to be better than most in Georgia. We won't be back here. Fast in and out off the freeway ... we had the brisket and pulled pork. Great smoke ring and flavor on both. Very good mac and cheese. Okra and Brunswick stew were tasty. Their stew is on the sweeter side and had potatoes. I would recommend this place as you are on 16 to or from Savannah.
