Food was good. We got a cheesesteak , fries and can of soda for $16 bucks. While waiting I got a sample of pasta salad with tortellini that was delicious. And I don't really like pasta salad. It was back in 2012 and I was working on an oil spill along Richmond Terrace on Staten Island, NY. For lunch, we would go to a small hole-in-the-wall sandwich shop. The smells, the rolls, and the folks there were just wonderful. Fast Forward to May 2024. I was told by my son that we just have to try out Papa D's Original in Tuckerton, NJ... Well, Papa D's Original was just 10 mins away so we went there. We did not know what to expect when we drove into the small parking lot. There nestled behind a home was a tiny white shack trimmed in red and green with a big ole sign Papa D's Original. The second you step into our shop it reminds you of the Italian heritage of these folks. We were surprised to see a small bar facing the kitchen. There behind the bar was the small kitchen and the owner making rice balls, red and green bell peppers sauteing on the flat top. I was taken aback by the wonderful smells of garlic, onion and fresh bell peppers grilling on the flat top. Then it happened, I was transported back to Staten Island sandwich shop. We bellied up to the bar and were given a menu while five people were prepping the great looking food. The menu has 11 Sandwiches, ranging from the Giavana to the Joe Pesci. They have a catered menu and full dinners. While we were sitting there the owner presented us with a small piece of a rice ball with vodka sauce. OMG! How yummy was that. My wife ordered the Godmother a sandwich with fresh mozzarella, tomato, basil roasted peppers on a seeded long roll. I saw the Toney Bennett, a Meatloaf sandwich with marsala mushrooms and caramelized onions all on a seeded roll. Prices on all the sandwiches range from $6 to $15. Be prepared to use cash only. There is an ATM outside. According to the owner their Italian Grandmas never settled for anything less than fresh, so why should they? Many of the herbs like basil are grown on site and their produce is fresh daily. When we got home, we both enjoyed the sandwiches. Once you take a bite, you'll understand how much these folks value freshness! So, will we be back? You betcha! I want to try the Pacino! This beautiful sandwich is loaded with sliced freshly marinated roast pork, fresh broccoli rabe, and sharp provolone cheese! I stopped by to give Papa D's a shot as I was wanting to try somewhere new. I ordered a sausage, pepper, onion sandwich with a side of meatballs. The meatballs were tasty and the sandwich was quite delicious. The staff at Papa D's were very personable and engaging while I waited for the food to be ready, even allowing a sample of the rice balls (that's on the list for next time). My wife and I visited Papa D's last night to grab some things for dinner. This was my first visit and I was not disappointed. The owners couldn't have been more welcoming. I wouldn't have been in the door for more than 2 minutes before the owner was offering us samples of the most delicious rice falls, followed by samples of home made meatballs. It is obvious that these people know how to prepare delicious food but, what is also obvious is that they appreciate their customers. For our order we bought two chicken cutlets, broccoli rabe, two sauces and some bread. (Chicken Parmesan destruction so we could make everything later) We will back for sure as I was to get some of this rice balls and meatballs. read more

I had the meatball parm sandwich, fresh mozzarella is way better than the block kind. Hand cut fries are amazing, not very many places make them. I placed my order and sat down and waited for the order while Dominic (the owner) gave a a sample of their meatballs and oh my goodness they are so good! Tried this the other day and it was very delicious. My wife and I has the italian hot dog. Let give some history behind ourselves and this sandwich. The version made North of the Driscoll bridge varies greatly with the South Jersey version. With that being said, Papa D's version didn't try to imitate the Jimmy Buff version but rather created its own unique and quite tasty take on the Italian hot dog. The Patio in New Gretna up until now was front runner mostly because of the unique roll its served on "the pizza pocket bread". No where south of the bridge is this available except to special order it from the Apple bakery in Manahawkin. Papa D's hit this one out of the park:even using a standard hoagie roll. Can't wait to taste the other offerings. The staff was super even saving us some $ by directing us toward the special rather than ordering separately each part of our meal. Papa D's has some stiff competition but with homemade food like this say good bye to your usual italian take out and hello to the new sheriff in town. Our only advice is don't be timid taking on the supper crowd. A couple of nights a week would rake in the dollars. Places like Naples, China Palace have business to spare. I routinely won't order from them because the wait time is atrocious. No pizza or chow meine is worth an hour wait. Get yourselves to Papa D's and let your taste buds run... Oh, as for some of the poor reviews, I'm not sure where you get your cheese steaks or french fries but if its Naples now lets talk dry and greasy. My last sandwich from there needed half a bottle of ketchup and the fries I don't order until I arrive to pick up because they are always cold and mussy.
