I have to admit this was a second chance visit because the first time visit was not pleasant. That was 6 years ago, so when I heard they had new cooks I decided to try it for date night. We had the house salad with the Italian house dressing my husband ordered "The Duncan" to start with two glasses of wine. We where very impressed "The Duncan" is a spinach and artichoke dip NOMNOMNOM cheesy, creamy goodness paired with awesome bread. My salad was great! A salad is just a salad but their House Italian dressing which was very flavorful and light. It was so good that my husband had a taste and kept asking for more. That's another plus the portions sizes, one plate is enough to feed two. We shared the beef lasagna which was covered in a delicious sauce. We've been back since, I would recommend everything from the calamari, battered green beans to the Marilyn or the Italian War Hero. We had a great time there, the walls are covered in pictures so we spend most of the night trying to name the actor/actress. So .... if you are looking for homemade Italian meal with, great service and good portions this is a place you should check out. read more

This is my new favorite Italian restaurant! The service was outstanding. Everyone was very friendly but not over attentive. My husband had the baked ziti and chicken parmesan. I hate the smaller portion of the chicken alfredo and it was still a good size! The chicken parmesan and baked ziti were really good! I would definitely get that next time. The atmosphere is quaint. The place seemed clean , Very odd to see thousands of posters pics and cards but not any hit of Italy in the decor. Tables old and dated. Plastic cups vintage. My sandwich had fake cheese 2 types OK for kids I want real food , not processed cheese product .One bit I was done. They did admit it was not real cheese.No offer for a refund or other food item .Like mom eat it and like it ." It's what you ask for." The bread was not good at all , never had seeded bread for garlic toast .So the bread not homemade anything . Tomato sliced paper thin lettuce from a bag. The meat mid quality. I like this place! My grandma comes here ALLLLL the time when she is in SA. So last time we flew into the SA airport and she picked us, we came here for lunch. It's a cute little family owned Italian joint. They have a pretty substational variety of menu options. They have pasta, salads, and sandwiches. They also have lunch portions & prices. They have a case of desserts and the pie we got was great. Oh, they also have sweet tea which is always such a nice surprise at places! Our service was great. We're regulars and are known by name. I don't promise that some bias didn't enter into the scores even if I did try. But I can't remember getting bad service or bad food here ever! I use a 5 point system with 4 being excellent. Location: A little difficult to find for a first-time visitor. It's at the corner of Toepperwein Road and FM 1976 (Gibbs-Sprawl Road). Streets are a little convoluted in old Converse. Plenty of parking is available on site, mere steps from the entry. Rating: 4.0 Arrival Events: This was not a busy time so we walked in and seated ourselves, as the signage directed. One of the owners came over with menus and chatted with us while our waitress, Liz, finished up with another group. Rating: 4.5 Waitstaff: This is where being a regular paid off. Liz greeted us with a ready smile and took time to chat a little since we were chatty, and she wasn't terribly busy. She had our drinks to us quickly, with our salads (special request honored and included) following right behind the drinks. We had just finished up our salads when Liz came out with our orders. Very timely service. Rating: 4.5 Food & Drink: They had off-menu items available and announced by flyer at the front door. This Italian is tasty. Have eaten here twice. First time had eggplant parmesan with spaghetti and a house salad. Eggplant was good thickness and sauce has some nice bite. Spaghetti was disappointing was over cooked and thick. Second time I had a personal pizza with pepperoni, mushroom, and black olives. Was ok but the crust seem to be prefabricated as in was not prepared on site. Was an expensive pizza personal pizza to start with but extra topping racked it up quick, also had a house side salad. Guys.. This is so good. We were going to go to olive garden but the reviews were kinda scary. I got the chicken Alfredo small portion.. and it filled me up completely. The garlic bread is awesome! My mom had spaghetti with meat sauce and she said that was awesome too. We went during lunch hour and the waitress was very nice and didn't rush us or anything. Very pleased. Actually I would give this 3.5 stars if possible. It is a neighborhood restaurant that has been in business in an out of the way location for a long time. I eat there for lunch about twice a year, never have I been disappointed and never have I been overwhelmed. I think the best part of eating there is the movie star pictures everywhere on every wall, literally hundreds if not thousands of them. Mostly stars from the 50's, 60's and 70's. This place is such a shame now. We ordered the Italian War Hero and sweet potato fries. First, the girl took 5 mins to tell me how much the order would even cost. Then I missed 2 calls, called back and she asked "Did you want the sandwich toasted or just the bread?" I said "the sandwich". She says "Okay, that'll be 10 more mintures". Okay, no biggie. I pick up the order, the cashier and other young girl was talking in whispers. We get home, no pepperoni, no mozzarella and HEB ham in the sandwich. The fries are cold and dry. No doubt the fries were ready before the 2 calls, which means they were ready 20+ mins ago, before we even picked up the order. It had been a while since we went to Papa Dantes, and we'll never order there again now. I don't know if the kids have taken over, or they just hire incompetent people... Walked in and waited 10 minutes for a server. I got up several times and asked for a server. I left after 15 minutes of waiting. Even the women at the cashier didn't greet me or say anything. The staff seemed to be to busy to talk to a customer. Will never go there again. read more
