The service was slow. The restaurant is creative with their knickknacks on the wall but the place is not the cleanest. We had hair in our food and it ruined this place for me. The food tasted great... until I pulled hair out of my mouth! And was only refunded for the plate that had hair in it, nothing else. I had a 10" combination pizza with thin crust, all of the ingredients were very good. The only problem I had with Papa Dante's Restaurant is the sides were entirely too expensive. I paid $83.00 for (2) 16" pizza, and 1 10" combination. That is extremely too expensive, but I paid. The restaurant was very clean, everyone wore masks, and I never felt threatened by COVID 19. My friend moved to this area and after touring her new house, we decided to have dinner here. I ordered the Manicotti, it was ok. The Garlic bread is really tasty though, an order comes with the entrée, highly recommended The décor was really awesome. Funny and true story, at first glance, I thought all the wall decors were pictures of Italian or Italian descent famous people, until I saw a picture of Eddie George (the running back) and blurred out: "Eddie George isn't Italian, he is Black!" They often have events at the tavern where families hangout and listen to music while their children run around and play. My only complaint is that the sandwiches are expensive & do not come w/ any sides. And the Italian dishes are delicious... but they do focus on simplicity, so if you're a good home-cooker, this is what you can expect to get. This place really is a hidden gem! The food is absolutely delicious. The first time I came was with my mom and the woman at the register was super friendly and helpful. We got Mozzarella Sticks, Caesar salads and the Lasagna & Chicken Parmesan combo and it was all so good!! I wasn't expecting much from the garlic bread but it was packed with flavor- so good! And they sell $4 little wines, which I thought was a great touch! The inside had a nice vibe too- it reminded me of a mix of Big Lou's and 54th Street with all the cool pictures on the wall. I loved this place so much I tried the footlong Italian War Hero Sub through door dash and WOW was it good! After our original dinner destination was unreachable due to a police blockade we came across this gem. I thought to myself maybe we will find a good place and decided to give it a try. Well we can't wait to be back. Haha! I saw a sign in front area that said BEST GARLIC BREAD IN TX and I think that sign might be right! I had the Lasagna with Chicken Parmesan on bed of spaghetti and it was deliciously cheesy. My babe had Fettuccine Alfredo with Crispy chicken and it was very good. This is an old school italian restaurant. Interior is decorated with nostalgic movie posters, photos, artifacts that pre-date the WWW and made me recall some youthful moments. So the stage is set for good ole Italian eating and it was. I had Spaghetti and cheese lasagna, and for desert tiramisu, I was very satisfied. Garlic bread was good and the chicken tasted good. This is my Favorite Restaurant in San Antonio! The staff is amazing! The food is incredible! And it is great to see a Family Owned and Operated business like this that has been around for so many years. The Dante's are a great family who make us feel like we are family every time we come. I cannot get enough of this place. Lasagna and Sausage are my favorites, but if you are a wine connoisseur you are really missing out if you don't go. Ask for John Dante. I've ordered 2 more times and both were huge dissatisfaction, very skimpy on ingredients for what they charge for a pizza. Cheapest to make, most profit. I'm moving on to try others for fear 3rd time will not be the charm. Very confused about why this place has such rave reviews. The food literally has no flavor. We ordered the chicken scampi and pasta with red "meat" sauce. I ended up having to doctor up the chicken scampi with a litany of seasoings (a testament to how minimally it was seasoned). I didn't even know where to begin with the angel hair with red "meat" sauce. The pasta was mushy and I placed the word meat in quotations because it was imaginary. The garlic bread was also a bust...... liikkkeee hooww tf do you make garlic bread not taste like anything? This is the best Italian restaurant I have found in the San Antonio area. It is a humble but proud family owned restaurant - and rightfully so. The environment is relaxed and comfortable. The service is friendly and folksy and efficient. The food is high quality and so tasty. I have been there so many times that I have probably tried almost everything on their menu. Their pasta is always al dente. Their tomato sauces are flavorful, while not overwhelming you with too much garlic and onions. Their sandwiches are rather pricey, but for the price you get a whole lot of meat, cheese and ingredients. Their soups and salads are awesome as well. We were excited to find an Italian restaurant in our area. We were sadly disappointed. Upon arriving, the hostess told us she would be right with us. After waiting 5 minutes, she calls out someone's name. We didn't even know we had to write our name down--so we did. Wait another 5 minutes while the hostess is looking for the guest above our name. Mind you, the place has maybe 6 tables occupied at the time so we could've just been sat. Service was very good from our server. She was attentive and refilled drinks quickly. My husband ordered a sub (delicious) We had mozzarella sticks for the appetizer (fried cheese, can't go wrong but 6 for almost $8?!) I had a cup of "minestrone". It was by far the saddest cup of soup I've ever had. Two types of noodles--chopped up spaghetti pieces and a few random whole wheat small shells, a few kidney beans and a couple potatoes. No flavor. I added salt and Parmesan twice to make it edible. I ordered chicken parm with a side of fettuccini Alfredo. Marinara was flavorless with a piece of chicken that tasted like it came from sonic and the Alfredo tasted like it came from a jar Growing up in northeast PA and having small mom and pop Italian restaurants everywhere, I was so incredibly disappointed. Plus spending $55 on crap was ridiculous (plus--$17 for a "whole" hoagie. That was a joke for the price) We will not be returning. Just disappointing in quality, price and taste. read more

A staple in our area for years. We did a to-go order and we not disappointed as usual. Ordered specialty sandwiches. Marylin for my son and David for me. Always good!! Prices may seem high to some for sandwiches. However, you get plenty of meat. We love the sub rolls they use!YUM! Just adds that flavor that we love! Ordered pizzas also. My picky husband who's never tried the pizza Bedford was very happy with his pepperoni and sausage pizza. The flavor was on point. We always have to get dessert when ordering. Never disappointed! A good Italian Restaurant is very much relative when you live in South Texas. I knew what I was giving up when I moved here. Where I come from - little Italian places that took an hour to get to and three hours to sit at was the experience of choosing to eat Italian out. Famous Italian people's mugs and autographs all spilled over the Restaurant. No need for updating - just trying to keep the place a safety net. I think of this when I am at Papa Dante's. It is clearly a drive from North Central San Antonio, but once there, you spend hours eating, being loud, squeezing into the little bathroom. It is all part of the "please don't make old Italian" go out of style. The food is incredible and there is plenty of it. I had a regular plate of spaghetti and meatballs - I was eating for days. The kids options are exceptional and the dessert's, there is nothing like cheesecake. (Other than cannoli's of course) Papa Dante's reminds me of what it was like as a child to go eat Italian for the night.... and I mean, all night. read more

I opted for the turkey and cheese sub... OMG everything was delicious. I don't know what crazy drug they put in their sauce, but I am completely addicted. It was rich a flavorful and had a nice kick to it... like real marinara should have. The calamari itself wasn't spectacular but it tasted good. The highlight of the meal was my turkey and provolone sub. It was nicely toasted and stacked full of meat.... and not that cheap grocery store crap... thin sliced turkey... it was topped with mayo, lettuce, tomato, pickles, Italian dressing and oregano.... I kept eating until I couldn't breath... it was that good. The menu offers a full range of basic Italian meals from spaghetti to lasagna to Alfredo... and everything from seafood, meats and sausage to top.. Yesterday, the family and I (5 of us) went here for dinner and the experience was completely different. The food - mostly pasta dishes - were bland and looked like they came out of a box from Sam's or Sysco. Though the garlic bread was great, the chicken parmesian and wife's shrimp were blah and required seasoning, with sides of ordinary spaghetti pasta that was cold and sticky. Smothered in sauce that is salty and acidic. This perhaps is what people may like but it's tough on children and my guys refused to finish their meals with the exception of a generic mac and cheese. 4 entrees, ones kid meal, one appetizer and my wifes two glasses of wine = $68 (not inc. tip) you be the judge, but for the quality of the food I left disappointed.
