They have great lunch specials. As far as the food goes, it's solid, good quality Mexican food. Nothing spectacular or amazing, but good. Service has always been good. The food is your generic TexMex fare (better than it's competitor Casa Rodriguez in my opinion), but I really like this restaurant for it's ambience. I love the exposed brick of the historic building. They have a room in the back that is good for larger groups. I went here for a friend's birthday and we ordered the chocolate fountain (chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream and a sparkler), which was really fun. They also have good drinks! read more

I tried this restaurant years ago and wasn't impressed. Decided to try it again this past weekend, and was equally disappointed. First, if you walk into a Mexican restaurant and you only see white people eating there, turn around and leave. That should have been my first clue. I'm white, so it's okay for me to say ;) I ordered cheese enchiladas. I mean, come on..cheese enchiladas..how do you mess that up? The enchilada gravy made me want to gag. Cheap cheese..oily and separating. I literally had to spit it out. Rice and beans were blah..nothing to get excited over. Ordered the queso, which I think were just Kraft imitation cheese slices melted in a bowl. It was thin, runny, and not worth the $8 they charge..that's for sure. My friend ordered the fried avocado, which is their "speciality". I tried a bite and it was okay, but literally just hamburger meat and avocado with breading. We had 3 different waitresses, that would show at our table periodically, yet our drinks were always empty. When we were able to ask for refills, it would take much longer than it should have..considering the refill pitcher was only a few feet from our table. First of all let me start by saying that I have always heard great things about this place so when I finally went I was VERY disappointed!! Love the atmosphere and bar area and the staff was very attentive but the food was not worth paying for. I ordered the carne guisada lunch plate and it was horrible. The meat was in big chunks as were the potatoes and the meat was so tough that could not cut it with a butter knife. I have never had carne guisada so bad in my life!! While I am not a huge fan of Mexican food or its different versions (within the US), Papa Perez is for me one of the best in town. I love their stuffed avocado and always recommend it to visitors we take there. Staff is friendly and the environment is nice. I think the best advice here is that if you're from Houston or San Antonio, just stay away from this place. You clearly know what good Tex-Mex food tastes like, and you won't find that here. The service is good, the atmosphere is attractive and clean, but the menu has gaping holes. While the wait staff is charming, the manager seems more like an army drill sergeant with new recruits for customers. I felt like Jack Nicholson in 5 Easy Pieces when I tried to order cheese enchiladas with chili con carne. "I'm sorry we don't have that on the menu". But you have chili con carne on other items, can't we make a substitute, I'll pay for it? "I'm sorry sir, but the manager says we can't do that. Guess what, there's a small Tacqueria right across the street. Next time I'm going to try it out. Papa Perez does have a good selection of beer, and their chips are excellent. I'm 66 years old and have eaten Mexican food my entire life all over the state and the country. This was without a doubt the worst I've ever eaten. I had enchiladas and tacos. Basic Mexican good. Terrible. The taco meat had no flavor and I couldn't eat the cheese enchiladas and I don't know what the sauce was, but watered down chili would be better. My wife ordered chicken fajitas. A group of eleven of us went to Papa Perez for breakfast after church. The manager/owner was the rudest person. She set up our table with just 3 tables and all the chairs super close that there was no way we could have sat there. When we asked for another table to add to the end, she said no because it would block the back exit door. Ok, understandable. So we asked if we could move the tables going the opposite direction so we could add a table. She refused. So we asked if we could move to the other side of the room. She said "that means I have to do it" like it was too much work for her. They were not even busy at that time. She had some of her wait staff do it. The waitress was super nice. But the food was terrible. My husband's barbacoa was half grissel. He could eat that, the fried potatoes were like potato chips, overcooked. My bacon and egg taco had about 2 teaspoons of egg--no bacon. The tortillas were thick and tough. I actually got choked on it. Don't plan on ever going back. Went in during first Friday so was expecting to wait a bit for our food. We waited an hour and the tables around us had been cycled through and we still hadn't received our food. Ordered around 7:10 and hadn't received food by 8:00. Manager asked what was up and we said we had been waiting a while so he peeked back in the kitchen and came back to our table and told us accusingly that our order had been put in only 15 minutes ago. But our waitress, who was very sweet, had stopped and talked to us several times apologizing to us for the wait. We gave them a few more minutes before tipping our waitress and leaving. Since I live in the land of lousy Jalisco based Mexican restaurants during the trip to Texas wanted to try some Tex Mex and this place was recommended. It was terrific! They have gotten too big for their britches. What used to be a genuine family run business who's owners and staff cared about their customers and made those who frequented their establishment feel like an extension of the family, has become an unfortunate embarrassment. Sadly they have allowed themselves to bitten by the all "mighty" dollar bug and only care about profit and the bottom line just like any other chain restaurant. They have allowed themselves to become money driven while customer service has taken a back seat. They are no longer an acceptable establishment to frequent and the family atmosphere once built upon and the reputation they worked so hard to establish in the Bryan/College Station community is over. I'd rather wait 45 minutes for a table at Casa Rodriguez. Even with the 45 minute wait I know I'll always be treated with respect and the customer service, even though slow at times, is well worth the wait. read more

Overall a good experience. Friendly staff, nice atomosphere. We had the chips and queso and combo fajitas for two. The salsa is just spicy enough, the sides were good, especially the charro beans which were bacony and flavorful. The main part of the meal was the fajita meat and that was the only part that was a little weird. The beef seemed a little like the mystery meat you get in a gyro. I have never been disrespected by a restaurant manager about my gluten allergy as I was at Papa Perez Mexican Cuisine in Bryan, TX. I asked what meats were gluten free and he stated only the grilled chicken. So I proceeded to ask if they could cut it up and make into nachos. He said "No, I can't make that accommodation. The kitchen won't do it. If I do it for you then I have to do for everyone, so next time you come in then I'll have to." His tone was very pompous. I said we were from out of town and will not be back. "The prep time in kitchen is the issue". What is funny is it's 2:30 and we're the only ones in the restaurant! Almost walked out. So now we are getting a grilled chicken breast that WE have to cut up and bean nachos. And their margaritas SUCK! Also they nickeled and dined us. You are charged $.60 for regular chips on nachos instead of the flat chips they come on. Chips and salsa are free!?!? Also, with the separate piece of grilled chicken came with a scoop of guacamole that we didn't ask for and was charged. DO NOT GO..horrible owner and COLD food. YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED.. I came for the first time and last time 8/27 at 12:40pm ordered the queso enchillidas with a taco. Food arrived cold and no visible heat from the cup of beans or even the instant rice. My daughter'a food was cold as well. I sent it back to be reheated or remade they placed it under a heat lamp and brought it back. The inside of the enchillidas were still cold and queso cheese wouldnt even melt. When I talked to the manager he said he was running the line and cause i had put my taco on top of my enchilada it cool it down...yeah right. I said even the cup of beans were cold..he.didnt offer to remake it or anything. Rude as hell....i requested my check.(his handling of me versus some other more affluent customers very different). I find out later HE WAS the owner...I hope he learns better customer service.if hopes to stay open. I hope he gets bettter thermometers in his.kitchen and maybe a microwave.. Nice storefront, nice greeting, pretty good service but really surprised when my sangria served in a small wineglass, half full, no ice, no fruit! Weird! Then asked to substitute grilled shrimp for beef or chicken on taco salad, charged an up charge even though I was deleting included meat, then shrimp were tiny (canned??) and barely cooked. Just had lunch here. The torilla soup was served room temperature. When I sent it back they put it in the microwave.Tortillas, cheese and soup combined into this big cup of goo. Not to mention the waitress slammed the bowl down on the table when she brought it back. This is my second experience with their soups. I'm not going to eat it cold because it could be harboring all kinds of bacteria if it isn't being kept hot in the kitchen. The cheese on the enchiladas was melted Velveeta without any garnishment's rice was dry and cold and the meat inside my enchilada was not seasoned. We've been dining at Papa Perez since they first opened several years ago. We followed them to their new address when they moved across the street from their original location. While I'm not a salsa aficionado by any means, my husband swears that Papa Perez has the best sauce on the planet! He loves their fajita quesadillas. I adore the shrimp-stuffed fried avocado, as well as their tamales, but my all time favorite item is their charro beans. Give me a big bowl of those anytime and I'd be happy! read more
