El Campito Farm - Awesome farm to table experience!

After spending the day visiting Mount Laguna, my wife and I headed back to the 8 freeway through…read moreDescanso. Just before we got to the freeway, we saw a hand painted sign on the side of the road introducing "El Campito Farm." Thank god that I hit the brakes to investigate them further. Their setup was as simple as can be. The entire operation consisted of a farmer, a few tables covered in burlap, and a respectable display of the freshest, grown on-site, organic vegetables that I have ever seen. We were on our way home to make fish tacos, but all we had was fish and tortillas. We had no fresh ingredients! But that's where Phillip(the farmer) and El Campito Farm stepped in. We picked through their selection and took a bunch of FRESH veggies home to complete our shopping list. They offered up all of the following in the middle of October: multi-colored beets, baby gourmet lettuce, fresh cilantro, green onions, fancy crimson forest onions, trumpet mushrooms, yellow squash, green squash, spherical squash, butternut squash, yellow carrots, etc... It is impressive for any local farm to produce all of these veggies simultaneously, but especially during October. What makes them my new favorite place to get produce, is that they grow sustainable food. El Campito Farm is organic, and they take it a step further. They have a philosophy that demands total respect for the Earth, their harvest, and ultimately, the families that rely on their fields for food. Most important question...How is their produce? It is superior to anything that I have ever purchased in a store. We used their onions, squash, cilantro, and mushrooms to prepare dinner tonight. My wife had to go lay down and relax after dinner. Why? Because the food was so good, that she had eaten the entire massive portion of food that I served her. The veggies were crisp, and maintained their distinct flavors like they should. Excellent! Think about it. El Campito Farm is producing high quality, locally grown, organic food for the community to enjoy. They are providing local jobs. And they are protecting the land by not abusing it. They love what they are doing and it shows. I will be back very soon. Until then, we will tell everyone about what you are doing out in the mountains of San Diego.

Extremely fresh, it smells and tastes like it was just picked (probably because it was). Prices are very reasonable compared to some Organic Farms. Can't go wrong here. I give it 5 Stars all the way.

She answered all of our questions. She was very hospitable and showed us a great time. We saw rabbits, emus, pigs, chickens, alpacas, horses, cows, dogs, goats and bee hives. We milked goats and harvested tomatoes and pomegranates. Our scouts loved the animals and squealed with joy as they got to try new things, especially the llama kiss and the milking of the goat. I think Cheryl has a true love for animals and it shows in how she shares them with others. Admittedly, it is not perfectly clean or perfectly maintained. If you want that, you should probably go to the zoo. She has an appreciation for the environment. She does not use chemical fertilizers or pesticides. I enjoyed hearing her knowledge and appreciated having another human on this planet that cares about it. I can see this being a totally awesome place in years to come. Everyone has to start some where and I appreciated all that we saw and learned. Also, she had a group of campers there. Wow! They were so comfortable on the farm and with Cheryl. I was totally impressed with the rapport she had with them. They loved it and it showed. I would totally let her have my city kids for a few days of camp and let them learn how to get dirty and learn some hard work ethic. It's most kid's dream to live like that. Our experience was a five. The only reason I didn't give it a five, is because I don't believe the farm has reached its full potential. Cheryl has great plans and a heart for making it successful.

It's really sad to think that Lailah was on the euthanasia list at the crowded shelters in Riverside County but thanks to Hidden Haven Farms, she's a service dog bringing a better life to our family.
