Garlic naan, chicken biryani and okra curry
Chantee F.

I really enjoyed my dinner here as it had a wide menu to choose from, something to please everyone. There were a mix of meat and vegetarian choices. I had the chicken biryani, okra curry and garlic naan all for £20. There was definitely enough to share. The biryani was flavourful and abundant. The okra curry had a good spice. Lots of chutney and yogurt condiments to complement any dish. Service was excellent considering they had to attend to a large group. The dessert menu was mostly ice cream/ gelato dishes so I skipped it plus I was so full. Add this to your list if you're in the area. You won't be disappointed! Great date spot with cosy atmosphere.

WOW, Papayas food is outstanding, the service was incredible, highly recommend visiting.

BEST SRI LANKAN RESTAURANT OUTSIDE OF SRI LANKA WOW, Papayas food is outstanding, the service was incredible, highly recommend visiting. Once you visit Papaya you will not want to order Sri Lankan food from anyone else. This is a MUST TRY!!

One of my best restaurant for Sri Lankan food. Chicken kottu and ginger beer are just the same as what I have in Sri Lanka. Good choice!

Ambience is as good as it can get considering that it's on a high street. Sparkling clean and service with a smile. I've never had Sri Lankan Tamil food before, but this is sure to be one of my regulars as it is also vegetarian and vegan friendly.

Why not give us a larger table in your completely empty restaurant? I like that they give your own bottle of water. The chicken kothu was really good. Street food from the eastern part of the island if I read it correctly. Chopped up roti, chicken, egg, onions and more. Tastes better than it sounds. They need to serve this dish in a larger bowl as it falls out when taking food out. The potato curry tastes good, but it's supposed to be in a coconut curry sauce. Which however was not very creamy and more on the watery side. As if someone had diluted the coconut with water and oil. Also a rather small curry portion. Also tried the puttu, which was three flour rolls, brown and white, good for pouring curry or Sambar over. The music makes for a not so very intimate and relaxing dining experience. Fast beat and loud like a Sri Lankan rave party, although quite entertaining music. They have a seafood Thali for £15 for those willing to splurge at lunch.

It's good for the people who just wants sit and have a some spicy meal.. No more authentic in dishes at all. Hoppers are like kerala style, Pittu was ok but the side dishes were horrible the potato curry and pol sambol. Ordered Prawn curry so much of salt when I complained they combined it with cold water and brought back to the table.. Idily good to break someone's head and Mutton Rolls were had a grassy smell of the mutton. String hoppers 5 for £ 5.95, that a crazy price. Hey what happened to you'll? After so many years of earning a goodwill now you'll just going down the drain.. feeling very sad.. I came back with so many reasons but I will not return again.

My oh my. We would have usually gone a few doors down to Dosa n Chutny but since Time Out released…read moretheir list of "100 cheap eats in London" this week, with Dosa n Chutny as number 2 it was ridiculously busy so we went to Jaffna House instead. And it was AMAZING. On a weekend they do specials, and we were lucky it was a Friday because the Sat and Sun specials didn't seem that authentic. Friday's special was a vegetarian 12 item meal called Thali, which included 6 types of curry, rice, a vadai (Sri Lanken small doughnut shaped fried bread), a poppadom, and a rice based dessert like kheer (not sure what the Sri Lanken name is). We also ordered a portion of dosai (dosa), which comes as two pancakes, and the woman looked at us like we were crazy because the 12-item-dinner should have been enough. But screw it, it was payday today and I was going all out! It was such good food; deliciously homemade, varying levels of spice but nothing too hot and enjoyed with a mango lassi. And the price? Two Thalis, one dosai portion, one mango lassi and one mango juice for £15. FIFTEEN POUNDS for two people. Today I thought "I love living in Tooting!" They also do a lot of stuff to takeaway, including special takeaway meal deals for dirt cheap. Many families came in to pick up different rolls and fresh breads like chapatis and pooris. So, now Dosa n Chunty has been endorsed by Time Out and will receive more than enough custom from those willing to travel South of the river, we should support the other local restaurants. Go to Jaffna House!

Some restaurants feel new. Some feel strangely familiar before the first bite…read more That's what happened at Hoppers. The moment I started reading the menu, I realized how close Sri Lankan food sits to the food from Kerala and Tamil Nadu -- familiar ingredients, slightly different names, small shifts in flavor. String hoppers = idiyappam. Kari instead of curry. It instantly brought me back to the years I lived in Nagercoil (Kanyakumari) where these flavors were just everyday life. So this meal didn't feel like discovery. It felt like recognition. The food is definitely on the pricey side, so I went in expecting a lot -- and some dishes really delivered. The Lamb Kothu Roti was the clear standout for me. Deeply savory, comforting, full of texture -- the kind of dish that makes you slow down because you don't want it to end. The mutton rolls with chili ketchup were another highlight: crisp, flavorful, and exactly what you want to start a meal. I tried the dosa with chicken kurma, which was fine but didn't leave a strong impression, and the appam (hopper) with stew, which I wanted to love more than I actually did. I also had a unique tipple made with arrack and basil seeds -- refreshing, slightly playful, and memorable enough that I wish I remembered the name. A colleague ordered the whole roast chicken and liked it so much he came back the next day just for that -- which probably tells you more than any review can. Service was warm, the space lively, and the overall vibe relaxed without feeling rushed. Overall: yes, it's expensive. But for me, the best parts of the meal were deeply satisfying because they tasted familiar -- not in a generic way, but in the way food does when it quietly reminds you of another time and place.
