The moment I started reading the menu, I realized how close Sri Lankan food sits to the food from Kerala and Tamil Nadu -- familiar ingredients, slightly different names, small shifts in flavor. String hoppers = idiyappam. Kari instead of curry. It instantly brought me back to the years I lived in Nagercoil (Kanyakumari) where these flavors were just everyday life. So this meal didn't feel like discovery. It felt like recognition. The food is definitely on the pricey side, so I went in expecting a lot -- and some dishes really delivered. The Lamb Kothu Roti was the clear standout for me. Deeply savory, comforting, full of texture -- the kind of dish that makes you slow down because you don't want it to end. The mutton rolls with chili ketchup were another highlight: crisp, flavorful, and exactly what you want to start a meal. I tried the dosa with chicken kurma, which was fine but didn't leave a strong impression, and the appam (hopper) with stew, which I wanted to love more than I actually did. I also had a unique tipple made with arrack and basil seeds -- refreshing, slightly playful, and memorable enough that I wish I remembered the name. A colleague ordered the whole roast chicken and liked it so much he came back the next day just for that -- which probably tells you more than any review can. We made a reservation for 6pm but we arrived when they opened because the timing was better for us and they were able to get us in straight away. The restaurant was bigger than expected as there is a whole downstairs area. It's a lovely ambiance and the service was great. The food was even better. We tried the Hopper experience for our family of 4 and weren't disappointed. They were able to accommodate me as I am gluten free so they were able to swap some choices and tell me what I shouldn't eat. This place was great. I came with a large group and we were seated downstairs in one of their "vaults". We knew instantly that the vibe was going to be great. We ordered, honestly, probably everything on the menu. It's so hard to say what the favourites were, but a couple of standouts for me personally: 1. The Kappi martini (£10.50) was incredible. Also I loved the cup it was served in 2. Mutton rolls (£7) - just fantastic. Loved the hot sauce too 3. Beef rib fry (£12) - SO flavourful 4. Lamb kothu (£15) - generous portion and also packed with flavour 5. Jaffna crab Kari (£15) - messy to eat in the best way. Service was fantastic. I don't think I've ever had such attentive service before. At one point we had to ask a question about a crumble topping on the bone marrow (whether it contained gluten) and they were so kind to triple check. Nice intimate place, a bit cramped but lively with an attentive staff. The food is exquisite with flavors different from your comme toujours Indian cuisine. But then, it's Sri Lanken. The Chicken Kari, Hot Buttered Squid and Lamb Shank Biryani dishes filled our table of three. All were excellent dishes. My only issue if you call it an issue was the Lamb Shank Biryani had such a massive lamb shank for the bowl it was served in it was a bit difficult to navigate. This place was such a wonderful find, definitely recommend coming here! We were staying in the neighborhood and did not have any reservations for dinner and luckily stumbled upon this restaurant. I had never tried Sri Lankan cuisine and I'm so happy we came here. We tried the mutton rolls, the pettah chicken buriani and raita, the egg hopper and the chicken kari. The chicken biriani was fantastic. I really enjoyed that it had a little kick and the raita it came with added a nice refreshing element. The chicken kari was also very delicious. We may have even enjoyed it more since the chicken was very tender. The mutton rolls and the egg hopper were okay, but I'd probably order other things in their place next time. My favorite food in London is at Hoppers, which I first discovered 5 years ago on my honeymoon and have been coming back to every time I'm in London. Their curries (or "karis") are just so flavorful and the meat is cooked so perfectly -- plus there are fun "hoppers" and "dosa" dishes (which are a gluten-free, lighter, crepe-like kind of bread vs. naan/roti -- although they have that too). I absolutely love Indian food, but Sri Lankan food is even better. I just think the combination of spices is smoother (less "Christmas" spice), and there's more use of coconut milk vs. dairy/yogurts (which adds another depth of flavor) -- and the spice levels can be customized to be just as spicy as your favorite Indian curry. Must-try: "masala dosa" (a light crepe filled with mashed potatoes and spices) and a "kari" (my favorite is when they have the lamb shank kari, but I also love the chicken). This location is much bigger than their original SoHo location (with a downstairs and a patio), so it's easier to get a reservation here. The service was awesome when we were here, so I'd recommend it over the King's Cross location in my experience. read more

We didn't have a reservation when we walked in around 6:30pm but they were very nice and were able to seat us, as long as we finished our meal by 7:30pm. This place was a fusion between Indian and Sri Lankan and probably my first time having Sri Lankan food. We ordered a good amount of food: Chicken Chettinadu Bites, Hot Pepper Squid, Seafood Roti, Beef Rib Fry, Chicken Buriani +Raita, Black Pork Kari, Hopper. Everything had its own flavor, and most were fairly spicy. My favorite was actually the seafood roti because it was a very unique dish, with chopped roti, potatoes and seafood. Then it was the chicken bites, super flavorful. We figured we had to order a hopper because it seemed to be a signature dish at this spot, it was like a fried sweet thin cake, not really my thing, but some of my friends said it paired really well with the other dishes. Hoppers is a traditional Sri Lanka food that is unlike any others I have tried. I have always wanted to check out Sri Lanka but since I haven't ever been this was a great running up option. I came here for lunch and was seated on the basement level. The fish we had ordered was said to take 25 minutes and was overall quite tasty and delicious. A lot of our other items that we had ordered first did come out quite quickly and we just never stopped eating. We had gotten some dosas, chutneys, sambals, octopus and fish dishes. Overall the menu has no description on the bottom but our server gladly explained many of his favorite items and really sold us on almost all of them. I wish maybe next time they would write their descriptions down below each item so people that aren't familiar with the cuisine would be able to eat it. read more

Our experience here was amazing by far. We had made prior reservations. We ordered kappi martini and some beers to start us off along with bone marrow and chicken bites which were delicious. Our mains included string hoppers, hoppers along with prawn and mango curry and chicken Kari. We also got some sambols, I didn't quite think they are needed. The food is delicious as it is. The spice levels were spot on for me. And I devoured everything on the plate. They did have 90mins reservations and considering we still had desserts to go through we were offered another seating outdoors. We chose to have dessert elsewhere. Service was great. I went all out in a review of the other Hoppers restaurant to say that it's my favourite restaurant in all of London. Quite the statement eh!? So, I wanted to try the one in Marylebone of course! We came here on a weekend at a relatively odd hour and didn't have to wait to be seated. I like their seating that is on the ground floor because there is a lot of natural light that makes the place pretty. We ordered the seafood kothu, a special from the board- seafood adai, masala dosa, and a hopper. The food was incredible indeed, like I was expecting. As stated in my other review, their flavours are very special and they do a wonderful job with the combinations. The seafood adai is a crab and prawn rice parcel in a yummy broth, and it looked and tasted so amazing! My only complaint was that the timing of the dishes was pretty crap. They brought out the seafood kothu what felt like half an hour after everything else, so it was really hard to eat everything together which is part of the fun. read more

Sri Lankan food, specifically Hoppers, is unique and interesting. "Hoppers", specifically, are thing, crèpe-like crisps that are quickly seared in a hot cooking bowl. You put sambal or other species onto it when eating. We had an egg one that was delicious with sambal and yogurt. The curries here were excellent, I should note. We had breaded mutton appetizers that were also delicious but not substantial for the price. Everything came out to about $30USD per person and we were full and very satisfied. Of note, if you can eat more than we did, they have a pretty large tasting menu that is £32 per person. read more

Hoppers is a fantastic Sri Lankan restaurant that serves some really flavorful and unique foods that may be hard to find elsewhere. We went for the Taste of Hoppers, which offers a sampling of some of Hoppers best hits ranging from the bone marrow to the button rolls and hoppers along with your choice of a Kari Kari. Can't judge on the authenticity of the food but I can definitely say the food here is so delicious! Most of the dishes are great for sharing. I've only come here for lunch on the weekends for the a la carte menu. The Bone Marrow Varuval & Roti is an absolute must! The curry sauce is super creamy and coconutty and doesn't overpower the taste of the bone marrow at all. I was really surprised that I could still taste the bone marrow and how well the curry sauce complemented it. They called this a starter but the portion is actually quite big. The Deviled Squid is also another great starter - spicy with an amazing pol sambol (coconut sambol) flavor. I also find that I liked the coconut based karis here more so I recommend the Prawn Kari. It comes in a small portion but enough to dip an Egg Hopper in. I always like to have something to dip curry in and the Egg Hopper is a good one. It's a crispy rice and coconut pancake shaped in a bowl with a runny egg yolk in the middle, yum! Overall, the food is delicious and worth a try. The extraordinary amount of pepper used on their hoppers. 3. The service was perhaps the worst I've had while in London. A wonderful, bright, airy lunch spot with fantastic food, perfect for sharing (and if your dining companion is weird about that, they have a few different lunch options that allow each person to sample four different dishes). I cannot recommend the following highly enough: - Bonemarrow Varuval with Roti: Four luscious pieces of bone marrow served on the bone in a deep tomato-based, meaty gravy, paired with a crispy roti (a bit on the heavier side and a bit oily -- more similar to an Indonesian or Malay roti than Indian). It may stop your heart, but it's worth it. - Hopper with coriander chutney: The hopper is a coconut milk based light crepe shaped into a huge bowl, thinner at the top, thicker and more tender towards the bottom. It reminds me of a Thai kanom krok, one of my favorite snacks, but less sweet. It's really lovely, light, pairs well with spicer curries. I really liked it with the coriander chutney which was made with both the coriander seeds and cilantro (as we know it in the US) and is really fresh, green, and herbal. - Aubergine, okra, and bean (seemingly lentil) veggie kari: Tender and flavorful vegetables in a light to medium curry sauce with just a hint of spice. A few other tips: - Don't have the hopper with the coconut chutney: this chutney wasn't my fave but also it's a lot of coconut with the coconut already in the hopper. - The drink menu looks phenomenal. If I wasn't so horribly exhausted, I would have had a cocktail. They look quite inspired, especially those with Sri lankan arrack, which is made from coconut blossoms! - Few desserts here as there's no pastry chef, but there are two lassi-like drinks and my husband had the wattalapam, a coconut custard and milk drink with spices, that he just adored. - No reservations so come a little early to beat the crowd. We tried both the vegetarian and meat feasts, and be assured that the portions were huge and even with four hungry people, we could not finish it all. I would say most of the Sri Lankan dishes I know are either exactly the same, or variations, of South Indian food. Hoppers boasts of a lot of the classic favorites of South India along with bringing hoppers (what most know as appams) to the scene. I don't think I've ever ordered an appam outside India, but seeing as it's the restaurant's namesake, I gave it a shot. Dishes The menu lends itself nicely to family style ordering. We got a bunch of hoppers, a couple dosas, and a kothu paratha along with some curries. The hoppers were great! They were light and fluffy. I got one with an egg cracked into the middle so it was a nice sunny side egg that you could dip into. The crab curry was dope af. It was spicy, and super tasty. It had a homely feel to it with its coarsely chopped onions, ginger, and garlic. It felt like something I whip up at home when I'm feeling homesick. The crab was used mostly for flavor and not its meat as the waiter informed us. There was maybe one big meaty piece, but the rest of the pieces had little meet under its shell. Completely polished it off. The prawn curry was pretty bad. It literally just tasted like raw tamarind paste mixed with water and some prawns added to it. I don't think any of us liked it as it remained largely untouched after the first serving. Would not recommend. We also got the vegetarians kothu paratha. It was a great standalone dish but was even better with the crab curry. It was super flaky, crispy, and very flavorful. There was a healthy portion of veggies in it too. Great for sharing as it's pretty massive. I will definitely be exploring the other kothu parathas on the menu. Would I come back? Definitely! There's tons more to try on the menu.
