Went in for Pokemon singles. They have a system where you search cards on a tablet that has pricing and condition. They were adamant that you use the system to even take a look at cards. There were a couple employees available and I asked to see a couple cards but they insisted I type it into the system, select all the cards I'm interested in, then select check out, and THEN an employee would gather the cards for me to view. The first couple of cards I tried to type in were not found in the system but were in the display case. The employee suggested I type the card number (e.g. 2/108) and that did not work either. Finally I found a card I liked in the system but when I looked up that particular card, it appeared to have 2 versions, both near mint but different prices. When asked about the difference in prices, the person behind the counter took 10 minutes to research the cards and change the prices to even higher than originally listed - stating there was only 1 version of the card and they were mislabeled in the system. At this point, he finally showed me the cards and they were objectively not near mint. I wanted to get a closer look to see how played they were but they would not let me see the card outside the sleeve even when I requested that they take it out themselves if they were scared I would damage the card. He then again took the time to inspect the cards himself and correct the listed condition of the cards in their system while he had me wait. I asked if they would honor the original listed price from when I walked in but they said no. With that, and my not being able to make my own, closer inspection on the condition, I ended up not buying anything since I had no baseline to go off to see if it was worth buying for myself. Even without making a purchase, it was an awkward, uncomfortable shopping experience. The sealed product was comparatively much higher than the current market prices. There is a decent selection of singles but their tablet system was misleading and inconsistent. The selections were not good enough to entice me to come back. Be careful in your own price checking when coming to this place. read more

An appreciator of the creators, players, and innovators at Paper Hero's Games - a small board game, comic book, novelty collector and table game shop, including trading card [Pokemon, Star Wars Unlimited, Flesh & Blood, etc] + role playing [like the classic D&D]. I've stopped in to check out the inventory and collections, which is super limited on the comic side, okay for graphic novels, but truly excels at Table Top games. The people are beyond friendly and I do recommend checking it out. I've gotten gifts for friends and a new game or two. PHG has grown and changed over the years becoming a super social card collector, player and topside gamer spot with events as well as tournaments. It's no purchase for entry to play games. Someone on duty might be right up front or getting their Loracna on... a newer growing Disney based trading card game. Their Facebook or Instagram being the place to keep up with the latest, not to mention their sibling stores near Sawtelle, Los Angeles, Santa Clarita and a new (coming soon) location in Huntington Beach. Parking is a small share lot with Nat's Early Bite Coffee Shop, Gift Worx, Oswaldo Lifestyle Fitness, and a few others in this Burbank [Blvd] Plaza mix. It was really cool to walk in to the store and see all the services, product and their gaming schedule for different card games. I'm currently collecting Pokemon cards and while they're currently very popular they kept all their booster packs the same price. I've been to other stores where they price higher depending on the rarity and value of chase cards. This was really refreshing to see. They also have multiple locations. Since I live in Irvine, I've been going to the Paper Hero's Games in HB where I've had amazing service from Beau. Recently, I got a notification that two singles I needed were in stock at the Sherman Oaks store, but Beau was out on vacation. So I took a chance and called the Sherman Oaks store, who have no idea who I am, and asked them if I could use my store credit from the HB store to hold the two cards they have at their Sherman Oaks location. The person who I spoke to couldn't answer, but took down my number and told me he would find me someone who could. A few minutes later, Justin called me and said he pulled the cards, transferred my store credit, and would have them at the HB store the next day. This type of customer service is what it's all about and I just have to say my experience with two PHG stores have been above and beyond. These guys really take care of their customers -- they could have easily just said "sorry, we can't pull those cards for you unless you come to our location" but that wasn't their answer. They not only transferred my store credit, but brought the cards all the way to HB for me to pick up. They've earned my business for life! read more

Love it here! Everyone is super nice, their selection is awesome (no, seriously--they have a tablet that has all of their inventory so you don't have to waste your time sorting through piles of bulk), and the prices for things aren't stupid expensive like they are at some shops. This is by far the worst card store I have ever been to. In order to get a single card from behind the counter, you have to enter the information into a tablet and wait for somebody to come and check out your order. The tablet is extremely difficult to use. I would understand this method if the store was busy but having five employees that are all chitchatting with each other about video games and none going up to the counter to help you is unacceptable. On top of that seeing a whiskey bottle on the counter while there's customers in the store is crazy. I would never be coming back to the store. And on top of that, good luck finding parking when there's a tournament going on. read more

This place is equally if not, worse than the scalpers, charging 3 times the price for an ETB and charging almost $300 dollars for a booster box, c'mon now. Customer service is a hit or miss as well. I've Been coming here for years and have been loyal to this place, but now, just greed. read more

I started playing Commander again this year (Jan 23) after about 3 years off. I really like playing here on Saturdays and this shop makes me feel comfortable as someone who was hesitant to get back into the hobby again. There are some friendly people here and a few even helped me upgrade my deck because they know a lot and are willing to share. In terms of staff, Beau is absolutely the man! He's super reliable whenever I need to get stuff and I can tell he really cares about the games and the store, even encouraging me to come try Pauper on Thursdays. Stopped by Paper Hero's Games to unload some unwanted Pokémon cards from my collection. They don't buy Japanese cards which is fine, and offered me more for store credit which I accepted. Huge stock of gaming supplies. Games Workshop, Magic the Gathering Pokémon, DND, numerous board games, Star Wars minis. Large inventory. Phil the owner is super friendly. Play area is also very spacious. Looking forward to returning to use my store credit to get some Lord of the Rings products when the mtg set launches. They also have a smaller but also great location in Santa Clarita called Paper Hero's Comics. More comic books and collectibles but also a good amount of gaming stuff, just in a smaller scale. I've never been to their other Paper Hero's Games in Santa Monica, I believe it's as big or bigger but can't say much else about it. read more

They charge $2 for cards that are 30 cents at other stores that is 6 times the price. Absolutely ridiculous. The price on the machine and the price at the counter were insanely different. They also gave me the wrong version of the card that I bought and I had to go back to the counter to get it exchanged. The person at the counter who I can only assume to be the owner was also very snarky. Will not be returning here. read more

I've been here twice. The first time was frustrating. The second time was obnoxious. Allow me to explain. A month ago, I spotted this place coming back from the gym. As I tried to enter, I was asked/told to wait outside by some guy smoking a cigarette. Turns out he was the store's only employee and didn't trust me in the store alone. That's fine (I guess), but instead of putting out the cigarette and attending to the customer, he made me wait outside while he finished smoking. This was the first taste of the lousy customer service I was soon to experience. Finally, inside the store, I asked to see the Alpha and Beta cards that were listed on the in-store computer as inventory. The guy tells he "can't find them." Uh... okay. Well, maybe you should take them off your inventory list. That was the frustrating experience. Here's the obnoxious one: Yesterday (5/14/21), I returned to the store to find the same employee working. There were boxes of inventory all over the floor. Not only did it look sloppy, but there's legal exposure should a customer trip and fall. I asked to see an Arabian Nights card listed at $176 on their website. After inspecting it, I told him to add it to my order. He then goes to the computer, fools around for a couple of minutes and tells me the price of the card is actually $400 and some. This is false advertising, and is illegal. You need to update your website or honor the cheaper price. I then asked if he had located the Alpha and Beta cards. He said no. And yet, they were still listed as inventory on the website. Finally, I asked if I could look through the Unlimited cards. He pulls out a box of maybe 40 sleeved cards. He flips through them in front of me and they're mostly commons and uncommons. $1-10 cards, I would say. Juggernaut was probably the most expensive one, and even from a distance, I could see it was beat up. Card condition is important to me, so I politely asked if I could look through them myself. He waivered, then said no. I pointed out that the cards were sleeved. He still said no. I reminded him that I spent close to $200 the first time I was in the store. Again, he said no. I told him he could hover over me and watch me look through them. Again, no. By the time this conversation was done, I felt like a criminal, like I was the most untrustworthy dude in the world. I finally just told him that this had been a frustrating experience, and left without buying anything. In summary, the guy has zero - and I mean ZERO - customer service skills. Management should explain to him how to treat customers with dignity and respect. Being treated like some sort of crook was an appalling experience. Having said all that, if management wants to respond to this review and let me know when that guy's not working, I'd be happy to go to the store again and update this review. read more

Great model on what a tabletop game store should be! Staff was super friendly and willing to help in any way they could! They have a good selection of demo games and a large gaming area to test out and play. Parking can be tight, but there's more than enough street parking around for it to be a non-issue. Super important in modern times to support your local brick and mortar game store, and PHG is a great example of the benefits of shopping storefront vs online. read more

The person behind the counter was very helpful, answered all my questions, and helped us find the perfect buy. He was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable, I could tell he cared about the TCG hobby and community. The store has a big open play space for gaming events. It also has many shelves full of unique and interesting games, most of which I haven't heard of before but look like a lot of fun. I plan on coming back soon! read more

Probably my favorite gaming place in the valley. Wide variety of magic cards, board games and dnd players/groups. Always seem to have people to play commander mtg. The players here are also very friendly. The workers here are always helpful and friendly. Restroom is not always very clean (girls be prepared for a restroom mostly visited by males). read more

The owner Philipp was super helpful and friendly. You can tell he really cares about his shop and helping whoever comes in, whether new or old customers. I was in the area looking to buy a Pokemon Booster Box as a gift and Paper Hero's Games had the best price and service. There are a couple other TCG shops in the area but their prices are marked up 50%+ and the staff aren't really friendly. Great prices! Really enjoy the staff, the dude with the beard is very helpful. They have a great selection of both miniatures and Magic the gathering. Recently we purchased Star Wars Legion and Imperial Assault figures abs expansion packs. They also have lots of other miniatures including the warhammer stuff abd tables to stay and play with friends. I'll definitely come back for more Imperial Assault. I first went here about 3 months ago? The guy who helped me out was AWESOME. Had a general interest in what I played, answered ALL my questions (even though Im PRETTY sure he was on his lunch and I may have had bad timing) and overrall gave the best experience Ive had a game store HANDS DOWN. Its always a bit intimidating to go into a store like this the first time because you dont know the staff or what the store focuses on. Now, I wanted to give 4 stars after yesterdays interaction but I dont think its fair to anyone else working there to give a lower grade due to one issue. The store was empty (minus 3 people using the tables) and that was it. I came in hoping to get some info on cards I could use ( new to commander ) and the guy seemed absolutely annoyed to answer anything. Any question was met with either a very short answer or an I dont know. I wouldnt have minded so much if it wasnt for the fact that I traveled 2 hours on train to get there. Ive worked retail most of my life and I know that when its packed for the holidays, YES, I dont want to be stopped for a loooong list of questions. But with the store being empty and no line, I didnt really understand why things went down like that. (Maybe just a bad day?) The two people running the store were extremely friendly, helpful, and gave me a very good deal on a bunch of old cards I owned but never used. I did not know a lot about the pricing, but one of them did some solid research (even though they could have easily ripped me off), while the other folks in the store chatted with me.
