Nicole puts the ROCK in Paper Scissors Rock in Venice, CA. Everyone thinks my long locks are naturally blonde. LOL. I even switched to brunette for a while and my friends still thought that was my natural color. No one but Nicole knows how grey I really am... not even my husband! Nicole has always been so patient with me and she really loves what she does. She has a special talent for making everything - cut, color, highlights, makeup - look totally natural. I could fall asleep in the chair and know when I woke up that my hair would look amazing. She also gave me a Makeup 101 session before my wedding, thank God, including an itemized shopping list so I knew what to go buy afterwards. She didn't make me feel like an idiot for not knowing anything about makeup, either. PSR is my favorite salon. I've been meaning to write a review on this salon. I found this place last year after moving down here from the Bay Area. I needed to find a new stylist. I got this through a search site which I can't remember right now. Anyways, my stylist was Candi. She was awesome! Super friendly and cool! She was very sweet! When I told her that I wanted to cut my hair short, (I guess she needs to do this) she asked me whether I was going through a breakup or something drastic changed in my life. I tried to hold back my laugh but I smiled and told her that I was just tired of my long hair and I needed to change my hair style. She did an awesome job!!! I received many compliments on the style. Candi was also really cool about me going back to get a trim every two to three weeks. It's grown out now so I've scheduled an appt to see her again next week. So I decided to cut my very long hair off do donate to Locks of Love. I booked an appointment with Candi because of all of her excellent reviews. First off, she is awesome! She donates hair on her own when patrons decide to do extreme cuts. All stylists should be doing this! She is also very friendly and VERY accommodating. She cut about ten inches off my hair, turning it into an A-line bob. She also thinned my hair out a bit (I have VERY thick hair). At first I loved the cut, but as it grew out (which it grows fast), it seemed as though it needed a bit more thinning. I still thought it looked great, just not as good as when I walked out of the salon (but isn't that always the case?). Also, for the area, the price is decent (about $65 for a cut AND she will do periodic trims on bangs for free). Anyway, if I hadn't moved out of the area, this would definitely have been my place. read more

My hair stylist, Candi, moved to this salon a while back and I absolutely love it! I do feel a bit conservative when I go here, but I have decided to get some fun funky highlights while there. I first went to Candi because of a recommendation from my co-worker. Being new to the area, I was a little hesitant. Candi did an awesome job! Both my cut and highlights were exactly what I wanted...she really listens to what her customers want, and pairs that with her knowledge & experience in the trade. This is my very first YELPing, for the very first business I found on yelp once I moved to LA. I was so nervous about finding a new stylist.. i searched for about a month on Yelp and found Candi at Paper Scissors Rock. I was a little nervous about the funky Venice vibe - but no worries as this salon welcomes all. PSR is great for many reasons - parking lot, reasonable prices, relaxed and fun vibe, and most of all Candi! She has now highlighted and cut my hair 2 times and each time I walk out blonde and happy! She convinced me my first time she could give me the blonde I was looking for (bright, not brassy) with using color and not bleach. This has made my hair drastically healthier, I am so thankful for the change. Candi also guarantee's her color/cut! I went to see Candi after reading other Yelp recommendations for her and am very happy with the results. She listened to what I wanted to achieve and educated me about some different options. I know that sounds a bit heavy for a haircut, but it had been 5 months since my previous one and I was getting ready for an interview. She knows her trade quite well and $40 is a great price for a pro cut on the westside. When I moved to Venice I was looking for a great place to get a haircut that wouldn't break the bank. I've been going to a salon that was way too expensive in Beverly Hills for years and hoped to get the same cut & color I loved before, but for half the price tag. This salon is the solution to my search + really fun and young. Candi is now my regular hairdresser. I won't be going back to BH for a cut again. I spent a long time trying to convince my friend not to get a short haircut the first time we went to Paper Scissors Rock. She had long, beautiful hair and neither of us had ever gotten a haircut in LA--it seemed too risky to make such a drastic change in an unknown salon with an unknown stylist. Candi's amazingly stylish cut made me wonder how I ever could have worried. My friend looked better than ever before, and she's kept the same haircut since then. That was two years ago, and ever since then I've driven from Hollywood to get cuts with Candi. A year ago I decided to get highlights for the first time ever because I trusted her so much. My hair turned out amazing, she didn't rush, she used many foils and gave me results I couldn't have dreamed of! Candi is the best!!! I started seeing Candi about a year ago, I called after finding PSR on YELP, got an appointment same day, and have never turned back. I left my last hairstylist because she was so unwilling to try anything new. Candi is the perfect balance, I can tell her what I want and she will find a way to make it work for me. Getting work done by Deb is the total Venice Beach experience complete with appropriate background music courtesy of satellite radio, tabloids so one can catch up to current events and even jello shooters while you wait. It always hard to find a good place and even harder in LA because there are so many places to chose from and can be over priced. I have been to a lot of salons and really am not someone who likes to spend a lot of time in the chair. Every appointement has been on time and she got me in and out. I think I got lucky finding this place first because their prices are very reasonable and there are very high quality stylist working there. I have always been pleased with the cut and color. The decor is industrial meets inner city meets garage mechanic. Very unique and fun. They are up on the lates trends like recent feather fad. They had many to chose from and again really reasonable. Came here because of the good reviews, was left extremely disappointed. My stylist was, I believe, Dan. Stylist applied bleach to my hair several times, as it was apparently not lightening enough. I've been bleaching and dying my hair for three years, and have never had that happen. He had only applied bleach to my roots, and did not strip the rest of my hair. When the bleach was washed out, my roots were orangeish instead of the usual white blonde I get before applying dye. I was leaving for vacation the next day, and did not have time to leave. I just wanted to get it over with. I have extreme anxiety and was unable to say anything about it at the time even though I knew it would not turn out right. When he was applying the colour another stylist asked what product he was using, and he said manic panic. If I had wanted manic panic I would have gone to the drugstore and done it myself. On top of the badly bleached hair, it's a bunch of inconsistent colours that have already faded a lot despite only washing twice in cold water with paraben free shampoo. My hair is shaved on one side, and I asked him to clean up the edge -- it's not a clean edge. Not even close. Asked for a health trim of an inch or two -- he cut off maybe half an inch. Still have lots of split ends and general dried ends. Don't go to Dan if you want colour. read more

I was recently told about Paper Scissors Rock by a co worker, because I was on the prowl for more feather extensions. Yes: long, gorgeous, multicolor feathers that are semi permanently attached to your hair. (Mark my words, they are taking LA by storm!) I called Niki to set up an appointment, and she asked me questions about my preference of colors and lengths. I had told her that I really wanted longer feathers since I have long hair, and she went out of her way that weekend, before my appointment to find me long feathers. Talk about customer service! The shop is in the perfect main drag in Venice and also has parking in the back! Everyone in the shop was super friendly and laid back. Niki is a gorgeous fireball with her hot pink hair. I started going to Frankie a couple of years ago, and I am so happy I did. My hair is SUPER long and I have a hard time letting anyone touch it, let alone cut and dye it. Frankie listens to you. I decided to make an appointment at PSR after reading all of the rave reviews on yelp. I am generally fairly picky about getting my hair done, and I have a mad thick head of hair, so I know that it isn't necessarily the easiest job to cut my hair. I've lived in Los Angeles all of my life, but have had a lot of difficulty finding the hair stylist extraordinaire. Either the haircut is mediocre, or conversation is a bit too stunted, or I am just generally underwhelmed. Flash to a couple of months ago when I called PSR and got an appointment SAME DAY to see Frankie. I basically told her to chop off 6 inches of my hair and do whatever she wanted with the rest, leaving bangs (and perhaps leaning towards a bob). She gave me the best hair cut that I've ever had. To top it off, she's really friendly and has great stories to share while she cuts your hair. I went back yesterday for another cut, and received the same great treatment. The haircut cost $60+tip, so not bad for Los Angeles standards. AND they have parking in the back. Sweet! I highly recommend PSR. read more

i've been meaning to update since my last haircut from kyla. we skipped the crazy colors and took it short. much much shorter than what i previously had. so the last thing you want to see is your stylist making an "eww what the hell" face when you tell her what you want to do with your hair. or maybe it IS what you want to see. anyhow, i told kyla what i wanted, she made the face, and the great thing is, we talked about it. she had some great advice and options for my hair type texture and everything and i ended up absolutely amazed with my cut! after the initial cut, we decided to dry it and keep snipping from there. well no need, because after we dried it both of us were jaw-droppingly amazed at how much my hair rocked. seriously. major rockage. so yeah, once again, kyla is amazing. oh, and i sent my roommate to kyla a few days ago. my roommate decided to stop being a "slave to highlights" and wanted to go to her natural dark blond/light brown. she texted me while i was at work to let me know how excited she was for me to come home and see her hair, and this is a girl that does not communicate by phone so for her to be so stoked that she had to use her phone to tell me... you see where i'm going with this...that's right, kyla kicks some major ass. read more

I saw Nicole. Super cool genuine lady. I actually requested her based on her five star reviews from here on Yelp. She was so nice to me and to my friend who just came to hang out with me. What I particularly liked about Nicole is that she really wanted to understand my preferences regarding my hair. While she was working, she reassured me that she wanted me to walk out 100% satisfied and to speak up if I didn't like the way it was going. I love this place! I came here as a referral from a friend--I have always been blond (from light to dark blond), then in some LA induced craziness I dyed my really dark brown and then black (the black was a permanent from a box)! I was looking to go to one of the BH salons and it was going to cost me over a grand to "color correct" my hair back to blond. Well, KEREN saved the day and we brought my hair back to my MN roots. Literally:) And without damage, and not much of a process either. That was over 2 years ago. She managed to save almost all my length as well.
