Okay I'll admit maybe I'm the wrong dude to write a review - I'm bald and before today I had never paid for a haircut in my adult life. I took my elementary school age daughter here today for a cut and they did a fantastic job. She's not one to sit still but they were cool with her using a fidget toy while they cut her hair. They explained the process and most important they listened to her and what she wanted. Her hair looks great (or Slay as she says) The vibe here is rad as well. They have magazines which is cool to see in this day and age. The staff is awesome and the salon dog is super sweet. Alba Jr. is the absolute best with my tricky multi-texture hair (which is straight in the front and curly/wavy in the back, and difficult to cut in a way that blends the textures). She has rescued me from a bad haircut and consistently does a great job. It's also very affordable considering the high level of skill and time they take. I went there for the first time and Alba Jr. cut my hair. I am quite happy with her work. She cleaned up a randomly layered haircut on my almost straight hair, keeping long layers and adding more face framing layers. I immediately felt comfortable in her chair when I saw that she worked with precision and a plan. I checked their website and Alba was trained in haircutting at the Vidal Sassoon Academy, which is my favorite method because it works with the hair's natural movement and does not require daily styling. `I am so sorry I didn't know about Dolores sooner. A friend of mine showed up at work with a super cute haircut and gave me the recommendation. It's crazy because I've lived around the corner for years and didn't know how great this place was. I called this afternoon and was able to get a same-day appointment On a Saturday. No muss, no fuss- she asked me what I wanted, which of course I didn't really know. I should her some pictures of what some past haircuts had looked like. She picked out the one she liked and I agreed and a half hour later. I had the greatest cut that perfectly complimented where I am now. Not sure what the blow drying discussion was in one of the previous reviews, but she did a great job blow drying my hair and then putting on the finishing touches. 30 minutes after I walked in I was done. $60 a fraction of the cost of other places where the experience was not nearly as good. I recommend Dolores unreservedly and will be back. read more

Alba Jr is great! She is patient, honest and knows what she is doing. I have been to so many salons in Santa Monica and they are so over priced and often trying to upsell you and often damaging my hair in the process - in short - I really appreciate finding Alba Jr. she asks that you come in for a free consultation to make sure you are matched with the right stylist and treatment for your hair!! And if not she is not the one, she will tell you so. Honesty and professionalism is such a great refresher! My husband was the first one in our family to discover Dolores, and now I go to her as well as my two preteen daughters. It is a salon that takes care of the whole family. Dolores is such a delight and always does a good job. I love that it's always easy to schedule an appointment and always such a welcoming environment (without any of the westside pretense other neighboring salons have). My first visit will be my last. I read all the wonderful reviews about Dolores, but I don't know if there actually is a Dolores there. I met a mother and a daughter, and was relegated to the latter, Alba Jr. I needed the simplest cut - straight trim - but made the stupid mistake of staying for a blow-dry whereby she proceeded to DESTROY my hair. When I thought about it later, I realized she probably wanted to be done quickly - was lunch waiting? Were her feet tired? She had her hair dryer at an insanely high heat setting. I tolerated it on one side and when she got to the other I couldn't anymore and told her it was scorching. She instantly switched to a lower setting, because she knew it was too hot. But those ten minutes or so at an extremely high heat, pulling at my hair with all her might, resulted in a crown of short, scorched hair on the top of my head, and there is nothing I can do now but wait the months and months it will take to grow out to a manageable length. Bottom line: if you go, DO NOT ASK FOR A BLOW DRY. Also, it was a whopping $75 which is equally insane. Thank you if you read this far. read more

I have been getting my hair cut by Doroles for 25 years but it could very well be over 30 years. Dolores cuts and styles my hair perfectly all the time. A few times I went to other places because she was not around or on vacation and those were very bad moves for me. I highly recommend Dolores and Alba because I have know both these wonderful ladies for many, many years before Ocean Hair Studio opened. Today i came in for a quick haircut. I'm only in LA for the weekend so i knew it would be difficult to get an appointment so last minute. I got a trim here and I love my hair right now. It's hard to get a trim when you have long hair- most stylists try to do something new - or they trim it and change it into a style you DON'T like. However, here at Ocean Hair I told Alba what I wanted and ask for her suggestion. She trimmed my hair (it's still my desired length), freshened up the front, and blow dried it out and it feels amazing right now! It's a cute salon, great neighborhood, easy street parking, I felt comfortable when I walked into the salon with the light salsa music in the background. Alba is the person you need to go to if you really up in the air for a new style. She will be honest with you, explain the benefits and disadvantages of what you want. I wanted to be blond for summer, but she let me know that my hair being fine as it is would not be a great thing. She would do it but doesn't not recommend it. I like the fact that she ultimately left the decision to me. I did not do it, and add some extensions to the mix. For a cut, dye, and extension she only charged me almost $300.00 which is crazy unheard of. I had been shopping around and everyone quoted me $500 and up for clip on extensions. This is the woman you need to see!! I could not say enough about her and her mother who is another stylist. They rock!! read more

I don't understand all the high praise here. The space itself is nothing unusual though it does have a sunny front window and plenty of street parking. The studio has rather harsh overhead track lighting with burnt out bulbs, at that. I paid $50 for a very unflattering cut by Dolores. Somehow, "don't make it too short" did not translate to the trim I asked for. I was referred by a friend of a friend so was very disappointed. I can hardly wait til it grows out and am hopeful it will look better in a month, but what's the point if you don't walk out feeling pretty? read more

I did not have an appointment however I was graciously greeted by 3 lovely ladies that took me in immediately and made me feel right at home and taken care of. I have paid a gazillion dollars for the worst haircut of my life in Beverly Hills and I longed for a sweet neighborhood salon that was unpretentious and good at what they do...I found them here.
