Came for lunch around 11 am. It was mostly empty, and we were immediately seated. We got the roti canai - plain (C5) for $5.50, char kway teow beef (N17) $12-13, and hainanese chicken rice set (R1) for $10-11. They gave us a complimentary side of what I think is pickled vegetables? It reminded me of kimchi with a different seasoning/sauce. Our food came out quickly in 5-10 minutes. We really enjoyed all the dishes, but my personal favorites were the roti canai and hainanese chicken, which I think were the best value and highest quality. I came here after a recommendation from a friend. There were not a lot of people in the restaurant when we entered at 7 pm on a Thursday but that was all the better for us! We ordered the roti with beef curry, fried Haianese chicken with chicken rice, Eggplant in a claypot, Sizzling Tofu, the vegetarian Laksa. Everything came out very quickly and the service was good. Our favorites were the eggplant, the Laksa and the fried chicken! All of these items together cost around $100 including tip which felt very affordable to us for a group shared dinner. Since their opening at the start of the year, I've swung by to pick up takeout on 3 occasions with friends and family. Here are my thoughts on what I've tried: Hainan Chicken Rice Set (4.5/5) - With all the fixings and sauces, it's the closest we're gonna get to the traditional chicken rice plate. The chicken is smooth and juicy, paired with a perfect foil of crunchy marinated bean sprouts. The broth tastes natural with a hint of herbs - if it's from concentrate I can't tell myself. The chicken rice is delicious but leans on the drier side, so it's likely you'll find yourself mixing everything together to get your ideal ratio of meat, carbs, veg, and sauce in each bite. Fried Chicken with Chicken Rice (3/5) - The first time I tried to order this, I received the beef nasi goreng in its place as the two menu items share the same order number. Since they make you order with numbers, make sure to specify which one! But maybe they themselves thought the nasi goreng was a better choice, as this fried chicken turned out quite dry and weirdly textured after arriving at home. This one might be a better dine-in choice, but when the hainan chicken is such good quality, it'll be hard for me to pick this in lieu of that. It's accompanied by the same broth, rice, and sauces. Nasi Lemak w/ Curry Chicken (5/5) - I may be biased as nasi lemak is perhaps my favorite Malaysian dish, but it is definitely expertly executed at this restaurant! The dreamy coconut rice is your canvas on which you'll savor the spicy, sweet, salty, and sour contrasts of each component of the dish. The shrimp are cooked well and the chicken curry is well seasoned. It's a little difficult to share, but you won't want to. :) Curry Laksa w/ Chicken (4.5/5) - If you're a fan of warm, fiery noodle soup, this is for you. I've never had eggplant in a laksa before, but it's quite decent, as are all the other buoyant goodies swimming in your bowl. Just be warned that the heat will continue to build, so ready a cold cup of teh to put out the flames in case of emergency! Char Kway Teow Seafood (5/5) - Their CKT captures the kitchen's mastery at infusing fried dishes with "wok hei", that delicious smoky undertow that comes from high-heat wok stir-fry. The seafood is good too, not just an afterthought - if I were to bring a vegetarian friend, I'd recommend the veg version of this dish. Wat Tan Hor w/ Chicken & Shrimp (4/5) - This funky dish of noodles slathered in a savory gravy is halfway between noodle soup and pan-fried noodles, which means it's the best of both worlds. The to-go version was a little gummy as the noodles clung to each other, but I think it would be a really great dish for dine-in. In our city's multicultural mosaic of good eats, Malaysian & Singaporean-style food have unfortunately been underrepresented despite our obvious passion for other bold Southeast Asian flavors like Vietnamese & Thai. I tried out this place for the first time with some friends, and it was honestly such a great decision! It was pretty busy when we came in, but we were luckily seated right away. Overall, service was great and the food came out decently quicker than I expected. They were really great at refilling our waters frequently. I loved the flakiness of the roti and the sauces that come with it are really interesting and good. It's a great shareable appetizer. We got 2 orders of the roti canai for 5 people. Of course we wanted to try the mee goreng because we've had the cheap instant ramen version haha. The mee goreng was SO good! The flavor was amazing. I would definitely get it again. If you like really saucy dishes and flat noodles, then you can't go wrong with the wat tan hor with shrimp & chicken. The sauce doesn't feel too heavy and the flavor was just amazing. I would also get this again. It was so good. The beef rendang nasi lemak was an interesting dish that I've never had before. This is a great dish to try if you're feeling adventurous and want to try something new. I honestly really liked it. The beef nasi goreng is fried rice with a fried egg on top. It comes with the beef on the side. It was really good too! I really want to come back here again to try other dishes and their iced coffees too. I ordered the Fried Hainan Chicken, Beef Satay, Curry Laksa, and Beef Rendang. I HIGHLY recommend the Fried Hainan Chicken. It's full of flavor and it has the most delicious crispy chicken skin. The Curry Laksa comes with a delicious curry that pairs perfectly with the Roti Canai. The Beef Rendang was a bit of a let down. The flavors just weren't there and the beef was pretty tough. Overall, I had a good experience at this new spot. The server was very friendly, and the food was brought out quickly. Fantastic addition to Houston Chinatown. Best Hainanese Chicken Rice we've had outside of Singapore so far. Chicken flavor and texture are right on. The rice is very good as well. Not as well flavored and rich as the hawker centers, but still hard to beat and definitely scratches the itch. Got the beef rendang as well, in smaller roti appetizer portion, and the flavor and fork cut texture of the beef was also right on point. First off, the service was great. The waiters were very helpful and extremely nice. I have no qualms there. Second, the food was good. The Hainanese chicken was slightly disappointing. It was on the bland side. I couldn't taste any ginger nor any seasoning for that matter but that is where my negative thoughts end. The Kopi was wonderful and very smooth and not super sweet. It was a nice a nice change from Vietnamese coffee that I'm used to having around here. The rice and soup that accompanied the chicken were very good and very flavorful as well as the dipping sauces. The star of my meal was the fried chicken for my Nasi Lamak. They know what they're doing. It was fall off the bone tender and had the most wonderful crackly crust. The coconut rice was so yummy and I loved eating it with the tiny fish and peanuts. The sambal was on the fishy side but that's because there were fish in it (duh). I ordered the SM1 (hainan chicken) and the SM 3 (slow cooked beef rendang. Both exceeded my expectations. For my meal, I ordered the nasi lemak beef rendang. The beef rendang was good but once again small for what you pay. I did not realize that this is a huge chain restaurant. If you haven't tried Malaysian food before, PappaRich is the place to go! I would describe the flavor profile as a mix of South asian and East asian flavors. I tried the tofu ramen which was absolutely delicious. It had a strong curry flavor and was super filling and good portion sizes. I also tried the Roti canai that was delicious. the roti was super flakey and buttery and it came with a curry flavored dipping sauce that was delicious. Can't wait to come back here and try some of the other menu items! Nice spacious layout. I felt the design was a tad plain, however we are here for the food. Beef Rendang - love the plating and was very appealing. Beef was tender altho I read one Yelper felt it was not. I felt is a bit dry and still feel you get better rendang in Asia.. Fried Kuay Teow - it does has the wok smell and taste. Would love if they have added more variety of ingredients like Chinese sausage and some yellow egg noodles. I prefer mine with more dark sauce like those from Asia. Nasi Lemak - everything was good. A bit stingy on the chilli. Ice Kacang - $6 for shaved ice with sugar syrubs and some toppings, I think is overpriced. Portions for FKT and rendang were very decent size. Price was good and tbe server was excellent. We have two Malaysian restaurants in sugar land, so I doubt I make a special trip to Chinatown just for the Malaysian cuisine. This place is delicious! I came on a weekday evening with a craving for roti canai, and this place did not disappoint. I recommend getting the beef rendang, super flavorful, and the beef is very tender. I also tried the sizzling tofu and the fried hainese chicken. Sizzling tofu is amazing! It's super silky, custard tofu that comes on a hot plate with mushrooms, carrots, peas, and underneath the tofu is some egg. The sauce that it came was super delicious with rice, I almost wanted to get another order of the tofu. Now, the fried hainese chicken, I was not a fan. It was super dry, and tough. I nearly choked on it. I plan on ordering it steamed next time. Hopefully it will be moist. I would also pass on the mi goreng as wel. It was cooked with what appears to be spaghetti noodles? Servers are all very attentive and all the food was good. The beef rendang is full of flavor. So are the coconut rice and the chicken rice. Laksa is a bit strong for me but it might be just my preference. I don't find them to be spicy but your mileage may vary. The milk tea and the es cendol dessert are delicious too. We've tried the majority of Singapore/Malaysian/Indonesian places in Houston and this is better than most of them. This place has become one of my favorite Malaysian spots in Houston! I've tried the chicken curry laksa, fried Hainanese chicken, and nasi lemak with beef rendang. The fried Hainanese chicken is my personal favorite due to how much flavor and texture the chicken has even without the sauces on the side. The roti is perfectly crisp though I wasn't too enamored with the dipping sauces that it came with (one darker sauce that was too sweet, there was another pea based sauce). So filling. So flavorful. So good. I'm not super familiar with Malaysian food, but that roti canai is good enough to have dreams about (fried flatbread dipped in sauce or curry) . Even if it's just the sauce and not with the curried chicken, it tastes absolutely amazing. I was almost fighting with my companion for the last few bites at one point. How can something so simple be so delicious? I ordered the rice dish that's pictured here. It was good, but I think I would have preferred eating the curry laksa since that seemed more "special" to me, thus more worth the trouble of figuring out the parking situation for this location: it's in a small, yet bustling strip with an entire parking garage dedicated to it. But I don't think you could go wrong with most, if not all of the things in the menu. The takeout situation is smooth. You just have to call your order in for now; they don't have an online ordering system yet. I think the only gripe my companion and I had was that the cendol (dessert drink) was too sweet. I think PapaRich has pretty good Malaysian food. We've tried plenty of dishes there -- the Roti, Hainan Chicken, etc. but actually the surprise must-try dish is a vegetable dish - the water spinach! It has a kick to it and tastes really unique. I would say sometimes the Hainan chicken isn't as consistently flavorful or moist, but it's probably as good as it gets outside of some of the more famous places in the West Coast or Singapore. read more

I love this wonderful authentic Malaysian restaurant! All the flavors here are so authentic with wide variety. We started out the dinner with their highly recommended Roti Canai, which is an appetizer of fluffy Indian style naan with 3 wonderful sauces lentil sauce, sweet spicy sambal, and a curry style sauce. This is one of my favorite dishes because the sauces were amazing. I couldn't get enough of the fluffy naan. I love the sweet and spicy sambal, but all three sauces really elevated the dish. Another appetizer we got was the mixed beef and chicken satay skewers. These are great as well. The meat skewers were flavorful and tender. For the main dishes, we ordered a wide spread of dishes. One of the most memorable dishes is their salted egg squid. The salted egg lightly coated the fried squid to really give a balanced flavor. Their Hainanese chicken was also amazing. It's juicy and tender. The sauce on the side was amazing. The plate came with the Hainanese rice which was so good. The other two dishes were great too, Assam Fish and slow-cooked beef rendang. I feel like everyone is sleeping on PappaRich in Houston. They have great meals to share with the family. I've been to their location a couple of times and enjoy both versions of the Hianan chicken. A friend at work recommended pappa's and we're glad we took her advice! Stopped in on a Saturday night and found quick parking in the garage - people were lined up trying to park in it when we left, but there were tons of spots if people would just drive up. Regarding the restaurant, we were politely greeted at the door and at the table. Our server was really helpful in making recommendations and we settled on Roti canai - beef rendang, nasi lemak (chicken curry), and char kway teow with seafood. The curry was especially flavorful (rich and aromatic) as was the roti, which was sooo flaky! A common trend in my reviews, we asked for spicy, but were left unscorched. The space is clean and cheerful. Our waiter deserves an extra thanks for keeping the unlimited fountain drinks flowing. Overall, fast, friendly, and cheap! read more

Wish they kept the original heat/spice level on some of the dishes as stated in some of the other reviews.
