PappaRich is my favorite Malaysian restaurant in the Houston area. I've been going to them since they first opened, and they have always been consistent and never failed to impress. The restaurant is small and clean. The servers are always nice, and the foods are always delicious. I recently stopped by around 5pm on a Saturday for an early dinner for two. It wasn't busy yet when I first arrived, but more and more customers started coming in as it got closer to dinner hours. I always have to order my two favorites: Steamed Hainese Chicken Rice set and the Roti Canai with Beef Rendan. The steamed Hainese chicken here are some of the best in Houston area. It's always super tender and flavorful. I absolutely love the roti canai here. It's always light, fluffy, and just right, and I don't think anywhere else makes them as good as PappaRich.
PappaRich is a popular Malaysian restaurant that originated in Malaysia, and has grown to over 100 locations worldwide. It's one of the only 2 US locations, with the other being in New York. You can visit them on Bellaire Food Street. It's a clean restaurant. We walked in and were immediately greeted and sat by a nice woman. We came because we were craving one thing only: Hainanese Chicken. They also have the fried option as well, but we decided on steamed. We got the half chicken and it was enough to feed 2 people. The chicken was so tender. The chicken rice was cooked perfectly, so moist and flavorful. The chicken, rice, some scallion ginger, a bit of sriracha: the perfect bite! We also had the mixed skewers (beef and chicken). The dipping sauce was good. I prefer the chicken over the beef skewers. The beef skewers were a bit tough. I wasn't the biggest fan of the seasoning they used. However, if I were to get these again, I would just opt for the chicken skewers only. If you never had Malaysian food, I recommend giving this place try. I will definitely be back to order the fried hainanese chicken.
We were in the area and thought to give PappaRich a try. It has been a couple years since we went there. Not busy as it was relatively late. We ordered the sizzling tofu with seafood and a seafood char kway teow (flat noodle). They were both ok. Thought there should have been more tofu (10 pieces total). Other places offer a bit more tofu. The seafood char kway teow as decent. They do have the sliced chili with vinegar that compliments the noodle dish and give it a kick. Staff were friendly and the restaurant well decorated and reminded me of Kuala Lumpur.
A solid 3.5 stars for the food but I'll round it up to a 4 because our server Angie was nice and accommodating. We got there at 12 noon and shockingly it wasn't busy at all. The food also came out a little too fast, which I'm not complaining about but I think my beef rendang wasn't a fresh batch. I understand that this dish takes a long time to make because they slow cook their beef but I think it was out for a while. We started off with their curry chicken roti. The roti was soft & it was fresh. The sauces that were on the side were not good. I prefer to just dip it in the beef rendang. The chicken itself was forgettable & dry. I could've just ordered a plain roti. For our mains we got the beef rendang & salted egg prawns. The sauce on the rendang was delicious but the beef itself wasn't that tendered and melt in your mouth. & it was kind of dry too. They either cooked it too long or the batch wasn't fresh. The prawns were lightly fried and the batter was seasoned to perfection. The salty egg sauce added extra flavor to the dish. Overall, it was a good experience. Food was solid, service was great and the place was clean & well put together. Will I come back? Yes.
My friend and I were craving roti and we were nearby, so we decided to stop by. We came around 6:30 PM and service was so quick. There were only 1-2 servers but they were so attentive and helpful. The food came out relatively quickly and was so good! This was my third time here and I have ordered the roti every time. The roti was made perfectly with a combination of crispness and softness. I could order just 3 portions of just the roti 10/10. As for the noodles, I wish there were more protein in it but I couldn't complain because the sauce and the texture of the noodles were so good. They were chewy and thick, holding onto the sauce well. They had a rich soy- sauced flavor 8.5/10!
This place is legit! Hainan chicken rice - The chicken was very tender, perfectly done. The rice however lacks flavor. Sauce was good too! Laksa - Beware that it may be too spicy for some. I loved it. The ingredients were great and the soup flavor was intense and rich. It already have fish ball so unless you want prawns, get the extra otherwise, chicken is a little cheaper. Good noodles. Taste like the authentic one. Chow kwai teo - The flavor was very good. It's not curry based unlike some Chinese restaurant just add cut powder. This one was authentic. Luck Texan, this place is legit.
If you're looking for a Malaysian restaurant, this is a good place to try. The food is very good especially ghe sizzling tofu, water spinach in sambal sauce, fried calamari in salted egg abd even the rotis. The place is not that big but adequate, the server are very friendly and service is fast.
We were in Bellaire, this place hit the spot! I really wanted hainanese chicken and they have a little set that was PERFECT. If you want 1/2 chicken, there is a larger dish that you can order. We paired this with a mushroom and veggie stirfry. What I love about this place is that they don't do added MSG and if you want, you can ask for less sauce or less salt and the food was just the right level for me. The hainanese chicken set comes with 3 dipping sauces and a bowl of the most delicious flavored rice! I really enjoyed the ginger oil sauce on the rice... YUM. We didn't have to wait long after we sat down to order and after we ordered the food came out pretty fast. Wonderful service. You know the food is on point when you have the perfect silence. The hubs noticed we weren't talking at all because we were so engrossed in the food, LOL!
My cousin's uncle (on her dad's side) recommended we go here since I've never been before and they said this was their favorite spot for malaysian food. My cousin who had been to Singapore said she liked this place also because their food reminded her a little of the food she had in Singapore. We came for a Sunday lunch and it was somewhat busy, they had several tables open but the groups that came in were of at least 4 people. There was probably 1-2 people serving but I only saw 1 person taking orders and she was going to each table that just got saw to take everyone's orders on her Ipad. We had asked for water and that took a while to get brought out to us but eventually we got cups of water and bowls/ utensils then the food started coming out. We had also asked for small sharing bowls 3 times to 2 different people that never got brought out because we wanted to share the Laksa but eventually someone brought out some bowls when they saw we were trying to share the Laksa. I'd come back here but maybe try to go on a non-busy hours of operation so we can potentially get better service.
Do not order takeout online here. I wanted to try their Wat Tan Hor for lunch, but what I received looked nothing like the description. It was basically a plate of leftover-looking rice noodles with no chicken or shrimp as advertised. I honestly don't even feel safe eating it. And yet, it cost me $17. That's insane -- it feels like robbery and leaves you feeling disgusted. Avoid this restaurant, at least when it comes to online orders.
PappaRich is my favorite Malaysian restaurant in town! The waiters are incredibly kind, the service is fast, the restaurant is always kept clean, and the food is delicious! This time around, I brought a friend to try it out for her first time! We got the sizzling tofu, the char kway teow, and the roti. Everything was a 10/10! The sizzling tofu was slightly crispy on the outside and so silky inside. The roti was flaky and I loved the variety of curries to dip it in. Everything was seasoned super well. I am always excited to come back here!
Papparich has a nice interior decoration. Staff was very friendly and service was excellent. Food came out very quick since it was a Monday night. Ordered the plain roti canai; came with 3 sauces. Enjoyed this! Tofu came out on a sizzling plate, but it wasn't sizzling :/ Tasted alright Was disappointed with the hokkien mee. The color was off (usually darker) and it wasn't savory enough. Highlight of the dinner was the Fried Hainanese chicken. Super delicious! Great flavor, juicy chicken, crispy skin, and a variety of sauces! Would mainly come back for the roti, fried Hainanese chicken, and to try other dishes.

Yum!! So excited to find a Malaysian restaurant here. We had the hainanese chicken rice, chicken laksa, chicken satay & lychee soda. Everything was yummy and the lychee soda especially was super delish and refreshing. read more
Tried this place for the first time. Really good Malaysian food! We ordered the Roti Beef Randang appetizer. It was so good. Probably our favorite dish! Next time I'll order the Beef Randang plate as well. Also ordered the sizzling tofu to share (2nd favorite dish). I ordered the curry chicken Nasi Lemak. And we also ordered the the shredded chicken and shrimp soup. By far the favorites were the Roti and tofu dishes. Full of flavors! The staff was very sweet and attentive. Always there to refill beverages or bring extra napkins. read more
Roti Canai was the objective and PappaRich came through. PappaRich in Chinatown is one of two in the country, the other one being in New York. This one is located right off Bellaire in the popular Bellaire Food Street strip center. Parking is limited right out front, but they do have a parking garage as well. We came at dinner time and the place was completely empty which usually raises concern but it picked up around the time we were ready to leave. Customer service was great from start to finish. Our waitress was patient with us and explained all the dishes we had questions about. Since we knew we wanted Roti Canai, we ordered a couple of orders of that plain as an appetizer while we looked over the menu for our entrees. The roti came out pretty quick but came out hot and fresh. The roti comes two in an order with three different sauces/curries. There was a dahl (lentil curry), a sweet and spicy sambal sauce and what tasted like curry from the rendang. The roti was cooked to perfection. Many different countries have roti, but they are all so similar. It was flaky yet fluffy and had a wonderful taste on it's own. The delicious sauces were just an added bonus. We ordered three entrees so we could get a good sampling of their dishes. A must have Malaysian food other than the roti is slow cooked beef rendang. This dish was by far my favorite thing of the night. The portions were generous. The beef was slow cooked and fall apart tender. The flavors were very reminiscent of the south Indian flavors I grew up on. They serve their entrees with a flavorful white rice which I understood to be cooked in a chicken broth that was very good. We wanted to try other proteins as well so we went with Salted Egg Squid as well as the Fried Hainanese Chicken. The squid was perfect in my opinion. It came out hot and fresh, had a nice crunch and the flavors were on point. The chicken was a huge portion of chicken that was lightly fried with a light coating. It gave is a small crunch but had good flavor. It came with 3 different sauces which all complimented the chicken nicely. The sweet and spicy sambal sauce was my favorite and went with all the dishes honestly. Overall, a very great meal was had here and they have become my current favorite Malaysian spot. Very disappointing visit to PappaRich. They used to be good, and we always liked visiting from Dallas, but this time around was a HUGE flop. Roti canai and Nasi Hainan are both good. Penang Char Kwaytiao didn't have any char whatsoever, very minimal wok hei. Another big disappointment was Sambal Squid. For $20 we expected rich flavorful dish. Charged so expensive for this dish but so horribly under seasoned. Not flavorful. Didn't taste the Sambal at all, we had to ask for blachan on the side to make it even edible. Need a touch of sweet also.. very one-note. I don't think we will be back after this. read more

This is easily the best Malaysian restaurant in Houston, and I mean no disrespect to Mamak (which is also very delicious). I've had the Hainanese Chicken Rice in both the traditional form and the fried form. The Seafood Curry Laksa is incredible. The fried tofu special is also next level. I've tried a few of their stir fried noodle dishes. I do not recommend the Hokkien noodle, but the others are pretty good. Overall, I pray for this place to come to San Diego. read more

My absolute favorite Malaysian restaurant in houston!! The rice noodles have an amazing texture and the flavor profiles on all the dishes are incredible. To start, the roti is perfectly flaky and the daal they provide with it is so absolutely yummy. I then tried the curry chicken and my method to eating this was to just mix all sauces and everything together on the plate - highly recommend!! The mix of the peanuts with the cucumbers and the sauces and egg was just so good!! Definitely not pretty to look at after you mix it though so if u need ur food to be visually appealing when eating then maybe don't do that. Lastly the char kway teow beef had a great texture to the rice noodles and it was very well seasoned. Overall a wonderful experience and no reservations are necessary! read more

Went there on Sunday dinner time, they're understaffed, have to wait awhile for order, food and everything. Char kway teow is good except there's no see-ham and Chinese sausage. Stingray is awesome, not too spicy, great for American tastebuds. Salted egg shrimp is okay too KL hokkien noodles is the worst, tasteless and no wok hei. No pork lard causing the dish lacking the authentic flavor. The ah char (pickles) is complementary and it's also our favorite. Don't forget to ask for sambal. read more

I always wanted to go here because the sign outside is adorable and in my experience, every place I've been to on Bellaire Food Street has been incredible. Papparich was no different, it's actually my favorite place there now. It's small and casual inside, very clean and very bright. Every time I've been there is ample seating, even if it's busy. The people who work here are very serious about their jobs and have always been prompt and polite. They go the extra mile and package your food for you if you request a To-go box, which I always find to be a very nice touch. The menu has plenty of vegetarian options which is always appreciated, but I can personally only speak on the vegetarian curry laksa, which is AMAZING. It's such a massive portion size for like $10 and the presentation is beautiful every time. The whole thing is so savory, rich, creamy and sweet from the coconut milk and all the aromatic and tasty spices that make up the curry. The texture of this dish is so velvety and there a perfect ratio of soup to noodles to add ins. It's really full of toppings, from two different kinds of tofu, an egg, veggies like tomatoes and eggplants. You are getting a very well rounded meal with you get this curry. I love to take it to-go when I'm sick, it's the best sick food I can imagine, so warm and comforting and really feels like it's great for your body. Love this delightful cafe. Very nice staff, crazy flavors. This was my first Malaysian meal and I now have a new crave habit. If you aren't familiar with Malaysian food, just ask the staff for recommendations - they were super helpful. Really love the complimentary kimchi they bring to your table when you sit down. Get the roti (chicken curry and the dal are yum yum) and the satay, intense flavors and beautifully prepared. I preferred the chicken satay over the beef, more tender IMHO. The sizzling tofu is 13/10. It's not vegetarian but topped with crumbled chicken. Peas and carrots and scallions also top the incredibly soft and creamy tofu hiding inside the browned fried skin. Great textures and umami-licious sauce. A must order dish. Dessert was a coconut thing with bean paste and green jelly pieces (drinks like a Boba tea), and a cold Malaysian coffee which has coffee, tea, and condensed milk. The coffee is good, similar to Vietnamese coffee. I didn't really taste the tea. I liked the dessert. It was light and cool, good for a hot Houston afternoon. Servings are generous and eating family style is best so you get to try everything. Highly recommended. read more
We love getting a taste of Malaysia in houston! We're excited to finally see this branch of papa rich come to houston. It's a great spot for wonderful Malaysian cuisine. We can see the influence of india on this cuisine. Our favorite dishes are the sizzling tofu without chicken since we're vegetarian. We love the egg like texture and wonderful sauce on the tofu. It's served with rice which is a plus. Don't let the size of this dish fool you, it's a large portion size. We also tried the vegetarian noodle dish (char kway teow) and curry (laksa). There are plenty of vegetarian items available. We also tried the pappa cham drink, which is a coffee and tea mixture. I tried it iced and really enjoyed it. It's not overly sweet. The service was slow. We had to flag waiters down, but we understand wait time are longer with the recent staffing issues. read more
Can Hawaii step up their game and have more/better Asian cuisines?? I first had Malaysian food in Seattle and then again in Vancouver and both times were just amazing. In Hawaii, we don't really have Malaysian restaurants so when I'm traveling I try to look for foods I can't get back home. PappaRich kept popping up on my yelp feed so onto the itinerary it goes! Our server was really nice and attentive (also a plus that she spoke Cantonese) and gave us her recommendations. We got the Roti, Hainan Chicken, the Fried Hainan Chicken, and the Beef Tenderloin. The winners were the Hainan Chicken and the Beef Tenderloin. It is an absolute compliment when Asians say that the chicken is so "slippery"; it was so soft and easy to eat. I honestly was taken back by the Beef Tenderloin, I didn't expect to love it so much! It was literally so tender and flavorful that I could cry. The food here is good, and the service is quick! We got the roti canai and we enjoyed all three sauces that came with it. The nasi lemak with beef was also really good, and all the flavors on the plate meshed well together. The char gway teow is a staple and they definitely made it right. The portion size is a little small for family style, but good to split if you're on a date or with a friend. Definitely recommend! read more

Great restaurant for homestyle Malaysian food. Service is quick and the food is delicious! We were in and out in under 45 minutes which is a huge plus (sometimes I just want to eat and leave!). We got the beef rendeng with roti appetizer, chicken curry, sizzling tofu, and the beef char kway teow - all delicious! Bruh...BRUH! This Malaysian joint is IT!!! omg. I typically don't like going around Bellaire but where else can you get the most authentic Asian cuisine? Let's start with the fact they had their family son working as a host and waitering a bit....ummm child labor laws? Lmfao jk, tbh if I see a family kid working in their establishment I automatically assume it's gonna be fye. And I haven't been wrong yet tbh. But yeah this boy maybe 12 years old? greeted us, sat us down, and grabbed menus for us. An older gentleman came later to take our order and took care of us the remaining time we were there. Kept checking in on us, nice, and polite. 10/10 no complaints on service. The place itself is nice and fine. Clean and upkeeped so no issues there. Now the damn food...man that was some DAMN good food. Starting with the Roti Rendang...freshly made hot and crispy roti with a rich and flavorful rendang is such a duo. The beef was tender and flavorful and the stew just glazes over the roti for a bite of crispy, tender, and juicy. I got the fried Hainanese chicken and man...that is just something else. The chicken was SO crispy along with the juicy meat in the sauce...I got lost in it. While the rice was great, I will say I prefer my homemade chicken rice. I could be biased but I find it more flavorful so it fell a bit short there for me. Still good as hell though. Definitely give this place a try if you want some good Malaysian cuisine! read more
The first time I came to Papparich was sometime last year and I instantly fell in love with the flavors of Malaysian cuisine. This is the first time I have ever had Malaysian food and I am a fan! The must haves: ROTI CANAI!!! CHICKEN SATAY Beef rendang As an outsider who doesn't know anything about Malaysia cuisine, the flavors of the curries that come with the roti and the textures of the poori meets a paratha like roti itself are just enough for me to order 3 of those and call it a day. The three curries are all so flavor forward and bold but not too spicy like Indian or Thai food can be. The bread's texture is a little stretchy when you pull on it but it practically melts in your mouth when you bite into it. As you are eating it with the different curries it just start to take you on a journey that words don't do justice. If I had to pick just one dish it will have to be their roti canai. The chicken satay is very flavorful as well. It's not like the Thai restaurant style chicken satay that usually have ketupat, bawang goreng, or the acar. This comes with a peanut sauce like sauce and some cut up raw veggies. Somehow this combination is so wholesome and just uplifting. The two new dishes I tried recently were the rendang beef curry and the chili prawns. The rendang beef curry reminded me of ropa vieja but unlike the Latin cuisine version, this dish is not shredded. You get lots of meat and the flavors are very mild. The chili prawn was not hot enough for me even though I was expecting a lot of heat. It is spicy and sweet which reminded me of a little bit like sweet and sour chicken base sauce. Overall, everything that I have tried so far at PappaRich has been amazing and the people working there are always so helpful. I cannot wait to go back! read more
Delicious! My family and I thoroughly enjoyed the cuisine in Malaysia when we visited, so I was ecstatic to try this place out. I know it has been open for a while, but I finally got a chance to try it out just a few weeks ago. I love that they are super clean and welcoming upon arrival. As for the food, my friends and I ordered family style so we could try a bit of everything. Here's the breakdown: Lychee Soda: This was actually so yummy. A nice refreshing lychee flavor without tasting artificial at all. Chili Prawns: Crispy, yet perfectly sauced in a sweet and spicy mix. Delish. Pepper steak: The flavor was good, but the actual meat is a bit tough. :/ Roti Canai Beef & Roti Canai Vegetarian: Really good and flavorful. I would love to go back and try out the noodles and other dishes for sure. Definitely recommend! read more

I'm not well versed in Malaysian cuisine but I loved the food here! I heard about this place from a Malaysian acquaintance so I figured it must be good. I ordered the classic beef rendang ($19) and roti Pratha with curry chicken ($9). Beef rendang portion was good given its price. Beef Rendang: The beef was so tender and soft and rich with flavor, thankfully not that spicy (I have a low spice tolerance). 5/5 Roti Pratha with Curry Chicken: I liked the beige sauce but not the red one (my friend really liked it and found it nostalgic though) but overall I was underwhelmed by the sauces. 2/5 Roti was so good, flaky on the outside and soft on in the inside- it paired well with the beef and chicken. 5/5 The curry chicken completely surprised me, it was so good, the coconut flavors were incredible. 5/5 Overall, definitely recommend the beef rendang, roti pratha, and the curry chicken. I want to also try some of the drinks, they looked delicious! Also, service was incredible, we were checked up on a lot and our server was very kind. read more
Man I like papparich. It's halal for anyone into that. The daal is a dream come true. I have brought daal (lentil) connoisseurs here and hands down, this daal beats any daal I've eaten in my motherland (Pakistan) in Houston, or dare I say it, at my grandma's house. The Malaysian paratha is not as greasy as the frozen ones I'm accustomed to eating, which is probably a better thing and more indicative of it's authenticity, but I could be wrong. The curried chicken wasn't my absolute favorite thing in the world but that might just be personal preference because my friend absolutely loved it. The chicken saatay was unique in a good way. The flavor was curry but combined with something unfamiliar and sweet. Service was 10/10. read more

great malaysian restaurants are hard to come by but Papparich is definitely one of the top spots! They were able to take care of us, a party of 10, promptly and politely, and the place was not too packed or loud on a Saturday afternoon. Most of the food that the table ordered was delicious. Some of the outstanding dishes that we had, and would get again, are the Hainan Chicken Rice and the Roti Canai. The Hainan Chicken was so flavorful, juicy and tender, and paired 3 sauces that made the dish absolutely delicious. The Roti Canai was so light and fluffy and was paired with 3 sauces as well (sweet & spicy sambal was amazing), that lasted about a minute at the table once it arrived. One disappointing dish however was the KL Hokkien Noodles, as it lacked flavor and the noodles weren't a proper texture and taste either. Overall, this is one of the places that serve quality "malaysian" dishes, while some dishes weren't as great, the ones that were stood out tenfold, and the service and ambiance solidify it as a top-tier restaurant. read more

Had such a great time here with coworkers! I knew I would fall in love with the roti! It was so flaky and crispy, yet soft at the same tjme. It comes with three sauces and I really liked the middle one. I got the fried chicken with coconut rice. The rice was great and there was a sauce underneath the fried chicken that was delicious with the chicken. Not gonna lie, it wasn't that much chicken but I didn't mind because the rice and roti were so good! Thoroughly enjoyed myself! read more
At long last I think I've finally had a taste of what authentic Hainanese Chicken is like. Side note I've never actually been to Malaysia but this is what I imagine it tasting like at a minimum. Tender, juicy and succulent pieces of dark and white meat, rather than the dry and chewy overcooked mess the average Malaysian restaurant serves up. The soy sauce was very light and mixed well with the oiliness of the chicken. The best part though was the rice, which was most likely cooked in the excess juices from the chicken you're currently eating. It was so fluffy and fragrant with such rich flavors of the chicken. The Roti Canai is always a must order, and PappaRich gives you 3 unique dipping sauces that you can't get enough of. The Beef Rendang was also quite tender and not overcooked at all (yes I despise dry, chewy, overcooked foods). I also tried the Curry Chicken, which tasted amazing aside from the fact that it was a bit too spicy for me. I was excited to see this new addition to Bellaire since there aren't that many establishments featuring Malaysian food. The only downside is that I absolutely hate going to this new and overcrowded shopping strip. We had the curry chicken buns, beef rendang, hainanese chicken, laksa noodle soup, and the roti. The chicken was very solid and tender although the broth was disappointing. Laksa was very flavorful and the best I've had yet in Houston. Roti was nice especially with the 3 sauces. Curry buns were tasty as well and not too heavy on the curry. The teas were mediocre and beef rendang too dry for me. Overall, I would definitely come back again, although thinking of fighting for parking spots in this shopping center doesn't excite me. read more

Came back again after too long and ordered on the phone to go for a chicken curry laksa ($11.50, $12.50 after tax) Let me tell you Papparich does not disappoint food quality is amazing, hot and fresh, the guy on the phone said 10/15 minutes I was there in 15/20. First time trying malaysian food and we were not disappointed! Appetizer: roti canal 5/5 The lentil and curry dips were really good, we didn't care too much for the spicy, roti was yummy too -flaky and warm Entrees: fried hainanese chicken (half), hainanese chicken (quarter) and curry chicken & sambal shrimp (all 5/5) Our party of 3 really enjoyed the eatery at this establishment. Flavor TOWN!!! First off, prior to entry everyone's hands were sanitized and masks were worn. Each table gets a kimchi side dishes to munch on while waiting (super yummy). Favorite dishes by far was the Curry Laksa Seafood edition (it was sooo flavorful and had a nice kick to it & the noodles were QQ & had seafood like shrimp, clams & baby octopus) and 2nd favorite dish was the Roti with Beef (the roti was crispy and soft at the same time, the beef was very tender and great flavors to dip in). We had a party of 7 and were able to accommodate seating. I didn't see they could make reservations online, but I guess you could make it calling it in.
