What a great find on a roadtrip. We were hungry and making a pit stop in Raton as we drove to Colorado. From the street it's very humble and walking in we knew this was a great diner/cafe with humble roots. The pictures on the wall were fascinating dating back many years of the Raton history. Service was awesome and friendly. Plus, they always kept our drinks filled! I ordered the Deluxe Frito pie. It came with beans, Fritos, cheese (that was perfectly melted) ground beef and green chile sauce. I'm not a big spicy person and our waitress said it wasn't too hot. Well, she was right on. Pappas Sweet Shop in Raton, NM is a good place to stop for a sit-down meal when you're on a road trip. The prices are *super* reasonable; this is not a pricey nor fancy place. The portions were quite generous and the food itself was Ok. The service was friendly, the food came-up a bit on the slow side, but that's Ok. They're been in business over 100 years, so that's quite a claim. Picked it because the parking lot was full. Stopped in on our way through Raton. The menu looked interesting and inexpensive. I ordered the stuffed sopapillas with beef and the fixins. The serving size was massive but it lacked any flavor. The green chili had a heavy garlic powder flavor but lacked spice. Service was good, the staff were attentive. The Ambiance was lacking, seems to be lacking I. The up keep. While I may never make it through raton again, if I did though I would probably find another place to try. read more

Clean and bright and excellent service The "sweet" part of the name is more in honor of its past since it isn't a bakery or confectionery. The food was delicious with a big nod to New Mexico style dishes. It was close to closing when we entered and the kitchen made a couple of goofs with our order, but that was quickly noted and corrected. Family owned and operated for all these years. . Husband and I stopped in while traveling. We stopped here solely based on the yelp reviews. I had pancake enchiladas and my husband had a burger. Food was just meh. The chips and salsa were terrible. Bagged chips and little to go containers of salsa that were un-scoop-able. I had Christmas style sauce and they were extremely basic and unremarkable- I expected to taste the floral chilies in the gravy but both sauces, especially the red, were just was flat. I was happy to pay for my meal but I won't go out of my way to return. Service was good. Ambiance was lacking but they're trying. The New Mexican burger with green chili and French fries was huge and delicious. My husband and I have learned we must split large entrees, he ordered the burger and I got a house salad. And we divided both. I must say the salad was just lettuce, tomato and cheese with packets of ranch dressing. It came with chicken chopped up. It served as a salad , but lacked luster. I did not feel it was at all worth the price. (I'm thinking they probably use the profit from the salad to offset the cost of other dishes. ). Every plate we saw come out of the kitchen looked delicious. The waitress was pleasant. The decor shows the age of the restaurant, but everything was clean including the restroom. I had the Cheeseburger and it was excellent (bacon and Chiles added were awesome ). My wife enjoyed the Dante Fe chicken sandwich which had the perfect amount of hatch Chiles. One kid loved the huge BLT and the other loved the chicken bacon ranch sandwich. bacon was perfectly crispy on everything, bread was very high quality. Holy Sh*t! Eat here!! The best $28. breakfast I've had in a very long time! The coffee was good, pancake was moist & fluffy, omelette hit the spot, and sopapilla was fluffy and warm. Mu bf had the french toast. It's make with homemade bread! He ate every bit of it! It will take about 15-20min to get your food but it's well worth it! This place has been family owned and operated for 99yrs! Quaint little restaurant with good service amazing food. A local favorite with a lot of friendly regulars. Very cool to eat in a restaurant that is 100 years old and if you like that vibe, it's a good place to go. However, the chicken in the pancake enchiladas was not good quality. My husband thought the eggs, hash browns and sausage were overcooked and way too salty. Seemed like everything came out of the freezer, not fresh. The toast was good, the menu says it's homemade. The kids liked their meals, a BLT sandwich and a ham sandwich. The tater tots were outstanding. The chili is more like biscuit gravy, not what we expected. Good food, nice staff, and good service. We had breakfast at Pappa's twice and enjoyed the food. We might have eaten there at least one other day but they are closed Sunday thru Tuesday. During our visits the other customers were locals and everyone was very nice. It's not a fancy restaurant with high prices, but an old fashion small town restaurant. What a delightful little restaurant! We've been here several times and this family-owned business never lets us down. We usually stop by for breakfast. Plenty of selections on the menu, including a few off the norm delights. Prices are very reasonable. The staff sends this place over the top. You receive a friendly greeting almost before you walk in the door. Everyone treats you as a neighbor. The restaurant is old and it's showing. Still, my wife says that's part of the appeal. Sort of an old-school diner feel to it. There's even a section with a bit of history of the city of Raton. Plenty of old pictures and memorabilia to look at (perhaps even more than the town's Visitor Center!). One drawback is the hours of operation. They're only open until 2 pm and closed a couple days a week. Sometimes more. It can be frustrating. When in Raton, New Mexico, you could do far worse than stopping at the Sweet Shop for a meal, but make sure you go when they're open! read more

First . We missed it twice. Once we got there we were immediately greeted and seated. My husband got biscuits and gravy which he liked (and he's a fussy man). So this is a small hometown restaurant, lots of locals. Service is okay as they are friendly for small town. Coffee has a flavor to it that did not expect. You can get breakfast or lunch and they do watch you closely if you are not from here. You have to wait forever for your order to arrive but the food is tasty. So the omelette is great but even better if you ask for diced green chili. Price is very reasonable for a small town. I really enjoyed that is was a small town family feel. Again don't expect to be in a rush as the food takes a bit but it is worth that wait. read more

A local hole in the wall in Raton that is worth the stop, even though you may just drive by it since all you'll see from the road is "Restaurant " in the front. The New Mexican Hamburger is a perfect example of the states contribution to comfort food. The Frito Pie is also an A+ example of the genre. This place is absolutely delicious. We stop here every time we go through Raton on road trips. Their sopapillas are so fluffy and thick. I usually get the stuffed one with green chili on top and then we'll get a couple more on the side to eat with honey. Food takes a little bit of time coming out but it's made fresh, you're in the middle of nowhere, this is THE time to sit down and relax for a second and have a good meal if you're passing through. As a newbie to NM I had not yet traveled this far north, but I knew I had to grab a bite from some local flavor as I cruised through. As I was perusing my options a burger joint named the Sweet Shop leaped out at me, so in I pulled. Quite frankly, based on the exterior, there's nothing to be impressed by. It's very unassuming, quite plain, if you will, and you just might miss it if you were not intently searching for it. No neon signs, no bright lights, and nothing distinguishable from the terrain in which it sits. Once inside, you might think you entered a time warp back to the 70s, but not the fun, bright 70s fueled by Flower Power, or any John Travolta inspired dance floor, a la "Stayin' Alive." What you do see is a rather plain, yet clean dinning area with a lot of senior citizens sitting about. Something tells me this place does not need any Yelp love, it has it's ever so faithful geriatric crowd to keep it afloat. Nevertheless, the grub is good, folks! If you're in the mood for a handmade patty, accompanied by handmade fries, you need to stop in. Wow!! Talk about fresh? Talk about down home cookin'? The Sweet Shop just might take the proverbial cake in this neck of the woods! I had the "Fusion Burger" with cheese and homemade fries!
