We stopped in Raton on our drive back from Denver. We found the Oasis Restaurant. It's a nice local restaurant with a diner feel. No website or frills. Just real comfort food at a reasonable price. I got the special BBQ burger and my daughter got the special Philly cheesesteak. Both were good, flavorful and simple. Fries were fresh cut. It's clear that they make everything in house. Even the veggies were crisp! The server was nice and fast. The server checked in on us often no matter how busy it got. They have excellent customer service. If you want good Mexican or American comfort food, stop by. You know it's full of locals. They also had cherry and apple pie. read more

Pork is meat. I stated no meat on or in my burrito. It comes out, I take a bite and am chewing on meat. I ask the young man serving us if there is meat in or on the burrito. He says no. I show him a half chewed up piece of meat and ask what it is. He replies that it is pork. I inform him pork is meat. Idiot. I returned it, waited for my company to finish eating and left hungry. So, our usually successful practice of asking locals where the best place to eat is didn't really work for us this time. If this is actually the best place to eat in Raton, I truly feel sorry for the population! We both ordered "specials". Hubs had a Taco Salad and I had the Tortilla Burger with Fries. ALL of the food was extremely bland and the fries were limp with grease. Our server was HORRIBLE, stepping outside to place a call while we were waiting to order. He was arguing with the other servers, trying to get his tips early and we had to request salsa for the taco salad and ketchup for the fries. I've only eaten breakfast here. I had a Belgian waffle and sausage. The waffle was cooked perfectly- great flavor and crispy on the outside. The coffee was your typical cafe coffee. Although I consider myself a coffee snob (I'm not a Starburnt fan at all), the coffee was just fine! The service was great and the servers were friendly. As expected in a small town, everyone knows everyone. Pretty much everyone greeted me when I walked in. I really like that. It reminds me of going to grab coffee with my dad and his friends when I was a child- 40 years ago or so. Brought back great memories. Sorry for the sentimental detour. I recommend this place for a waffle at least. I'll be back for a stuffed sopapilla this evening smothered with red chile! This is one of my dependable choices when passing through Raton. Unlike other businesses around there, Oasis is open 7 days for all three meals. And most importantly they are always open when they say they'll be open. Service is good, and the staff is always friendly. It gets crowded and noisy sometimes, but most of the time it's pleasant and casual. Nice view out the windows! Food is all-right. Good burgers, good pie, good breakfast. The red chile is probably the best in Raton and has a pleasant level of spicy. But the green chile is more akin to gravy with a bit of green pepper added for color. read more

We try to eat at the Oasis at least a couple of times when we are in Raton. My husband and I shared the Mega Burger with Green Chili Strips - Yum - for dinner one night, then had breakfast on the day we left for home. Perhaps my experience differs from others but the overall experience was lacking. It took us considerably longer to get our food. Several locals and groups of 6 were served before us though they ordered after. The food quality in no way reflected the increased time taken. Standard fare, nothing special or unique. The Oasis Restaurant is a friendly local place among a sea of mediocre chains, with good food and great service. My wife and I came in about 20 minutes before closing time on a Wed night. We were a little worried that the staff would be anxious to hurry us out so they could close up. They were totally friendly and courteous and didn't hurry us at all. Luckily for all, we'd been driving all day and were hungry and ready to eat. My wife ordered the beef and cheese enchiladas with red sauce. This was two enchiladas with beans. The red chile was pretty good, not too spicy. Her meal came with a cup of soup. We think it was cream of broccoli, not entirely sure but it tasted good. I got the open faced green chile burger plate. This was a huge amount of food - two patties, each on a bun, topped with green chile stew and pinto beans, and fries. The burgers were cooked medium, which was good. The chile stew was tasty though could have had more chiles and have been spicier for my taste. The fries were fresh cut potatoes, not very crispy but really good and tasty. I ended up taking one of the burgers home with me. The only disappointment of the meal was the sopaipilla. It had a decent taste but it was bready, not real light and fluffy. It was not a big deal because we really enjoyed the rest of our food. For about $25 with teas and tip, it was a lot of good food with great service. I haven't stayed at the motel, but having just finished lunch with my wife and two teen boys, I'm wishing I could give the Oasis Restaurant in Raton, New Mexico SIX stars. The service was excellent in promptness, and honest, warm friendliness. The hamburgers (including the "Mega Burger"--*truly* MEGA) were "great" according to the boys. As for the Calf's Liver with Onions and the Beef & Cheese Enchiladas, they were outstanding. Finally the homemade chocolate pie was reported as "okay" but my Blueberry pie (also homemade) a la mode was outstanding). In fact, everything was reported by our waitress as being homemade. Finally, don't be put off by the outward or inward appearance of the place (especially if you are prone to snobbery). After two visits in less than 6 months, this quaint, mostly local-filled restaurant/hotel combo has convinced me to eat here every time we pass through Raton. Visited The Oasis on Sunday, 7/31 with family in tow, this time for brunch...oh my. Wife and I got the heuvos rancheros, both with green chile; man oh man was that good. Each came with a side of hashbrowns and requested corn/flour tortillas. The flour, which we usually don't eat, we're fluffy and perfect for soaking up chile. The corn however, we're a tad dry, my hypothesis is since they use them as base for rancheros and other dishes, they might need to be drier than normal to keep texture. That's my story and I'm sticking with it. My boys stayed away from kids menu and went for smaller adult portions, and I must say, they practically inhaled their food. Clean plates all around...and on top of that, we got two cinnamon rolls to go. Great spot, efficient and friendly service. Looking forward to next drive through Raton! read more

Mixed results here. What they did well they did really well. But quite a bit of food was left uneaten with some misses. Came here with a group of about 30 people for dinner on our way to Philmont scout ranch. While the other restaurant patrons didn't initially seem all that excited to see our group, the restaurant staff was kind and accommodating. Great work by them and great job handling our crew with individual tickets and such. The Pros: The pies for dessert were homemade (our waitress told us) and delicious. We ordered a slice of coconut cream pie and apple pie and they were honestly some of the most delicious we've ever had. A week later one of the men commented that the apple pie was still perhaps the best he'd ever eaten. While the crust and all is good, it's worth springing for the ice cream to make it ala mode if you like it a little sweeter. The milk shakes were also major wins. Hand scooped ice cream. Thick. Delicious. Everyone who ordered one was thrilled they did. Appetizers were also delicious and with generous portion size. The jalapeno poppers must have had 12 poppers so great for sharing. And the fried mixed vegetables were generous and delicious--especially the cauliflower and mushrooms. The zucchini were a bit overcooked (dark and too much oil), but the others made up for them. The Cons: One boy who loves chicken fried steak had one and only ate half. Said the brown gravy they used (not the traditional white sausage gravy) was bland and ruined the dish for him. Those who ordered hamburgers said they were okay, but nothing special. One big watch out was the level of spice being too hot to handle. One group ordered the spicy wings and the wings were so hot that not a single person of the six who ate them finished a wing. These were teenage boys who loved spicy and they said it was simply too hot. Another teenager who loves spicy ordered the chili and didn't have more than a few bites before he said it was so spicy he couldn't eat any more. So while the cons need to be carefully considered, there's a lot to like about this personal-feeling restaurant. read more

When Bruno's is closed (Monday/Tuesday) the Oasis is a fair substitute. I had chicken friend steak, baked potato, green beans and a side "salad" hunk of iceberg lettuce with some blue cheese-like dressing (and a "fresh" roll). It was satisfactory and did the trick. Hubs had cheese/meat enchiladas and two "crispy" beef tacos. He said the sauce was good and there was a little heat.
