Walked in today with my kids and I got no greeting, absolute silence when checking out it was the most awkward thing. I'm the one who said hello and asked what the total was. I've cashiered before and that's the bare minimum to say. My kid even felt bad for me walking out it was not a good feeling. Pricey, yes but with everything going on in the world, it often doesn't even matter (especially if I need toilet paper!). I love supporting small businesses, and this one is no exception. While there is surprisingly a fantastic amount of parking, I tend to walk over (and I'm here several times a week, picking up drinks or random items). This market has a huge selection of stuff- there's local brands as well as stuff from Smart n Final and Costco. Everyone is always super friendly, and this spot is open late (midnight!). If ever I opt to pay for convenience, this is my number one choice in the area. read more

As a warning, this is a pretty Russian River Brewing exclusive post. Quick backstory: as a resident of Arizona, I am in a constant state of yearning for Pliny the Elder--hi, Russian River, I'm ready for you to distribute to my state!! So every single time I'm anywhere in California, I make it a point to hunt down as much as I can and bring it home. A yelp search/cross-reference against Russian River's website (this isn't a joke, friends) led me straight to Pappy's Market, which was conveniently located exactly one mile from my hotel. Day 1 of vacation: I hit up Pappy's on my walk back from Oceanside Pier. They have THREE bottles of Pliny in stock. I am elated. I confirm with a very nice employee that there isn't a limit (that's right, NO limit!), and then purchase all of them plus a bonus Blind Pig. They also carried bottles of the STS Pils, but I'm personally not a huge fan of that one. After a conversation with my sister, a Russian River worshipper as well, she requests that I go back and "buy out all of their Blind Pig" and bring it back to her. I didn't end up doing that, but I did swing back in and buy 5 more piggies. When I came up to the counter to pay, the cashier (different one from my earlier purchases), noted what I was carrying and asked me if I was interested in Pliny; my answer was obviously a resounding yes. He told me that there was another case in the back and he could offer me two more. Hellz. Yeah. After confirming that I did in fact, still want to purchase all 5 Blind Pigs in conjunction with my two additional Plinys, I paid the very reasonable price ($6.50--pretty common from what I've found in Southern CA) and went merrily along on my way. Pappy's will absolutely be a mandatory stop in the future for beers, anytime I'm in the Oceanside or Carlsbad area. The service, the RRB, and the overall selection was awesome, and the place itself is clean and well organized. I can see why it's a stop for locals and travelers alike. read more

After a long day of working from home, I was headed to this establishment in need of some cold coors light. Outside was a dirty looking homeless man who was begging for a pint of vodka. After walking in the store and abruptly pulling out his genitals, these store owners promptly proceeded to throw the guy out and kick him to the curb. Oh Pappy's what we do with no your loving arms of convenience. I rent surfingboard and have variety beer pack for good day. Have many barrels from Pappy's rental surfing boards. Was looking for Dramamine and was hoping that this local shop carried it, no luck although they did have a small pharmacy section filled with items like DayQuil and headache medicine. When I first walked in the store I thought it was unmanned because the cashier was sitting in a low chair behind the register! It's better to just wander around the store anyways and look for yourself at what's in stock because it seems like the guy didn't know what he had in stock as well, ha! From the clerks behind the counter recognizing familiar neighborhood faces, to locals bumping into each other while stocking up on rubbers and cans of cheddar cheese Pringles... chances are, 60% of the time, you'll see someone you know every time. In addition to the usual staples you'd expect to find in a liquor store/market hybrid, they also have fishing bait because of their close proximity to the pier. This was a little market up the street from the beach. We were having a little bbq hangout and ran out of booze and charcoal so I had to make a run up to here. This is a nice little market for some of your needs. A lot of alcohol which was good in my case. A few kids outside tried getting me to buy for them but i was semi-drunk already and realized that it was probably a bad idea haha. The guy at the register was nice and helpful. I think I was being unnecessarily loud in his store so I was surprised that he was as friendly as he was. There is also a public restroom for you people not wanting to use the dirty beach bathroom :) I'll be back next time I'm at the beach for sure. read more

I'm not sure if it's just a market or just a liquor store. They don't have the real distinguishing features of each. I mean liquor stores don't carry bait and tackle, but they do. Market's don't carry liquor and clothing and most people that come here get the hootch versus chips and a soda. All the north county cycling community should know this place for post trail runs and refilling on water or the overplayed "payday". They even have a bike cam in lieu of racks. Owners are generally cordial to funny, but you gotta remember it's almost this little island of hood with a jacked up parking lot, but most of the surrounding houses are a step up. The surfrider 4 way stopsign can be a mess. I often find the people who hang around here are worse than the people by the bars. read more

This is one of those pay for the convenience type stores and quite honestly, its not ridiculous pricing but you definitely are paying for convenience. they have it all, especially if you are going to be using the fiercest or making smores...they have your covered! Definitely will go back since we have a place near by. We often walk to the market just a block or 2 further but this one is perfect in a pinch, especially for beach stuff read more
