1.4 stars... I wanted to try this place as I have been to the Parador Rojo 1. And I really wanted to like it..... The only thing that my server was worried about was making sure our check was over $100... (they add mandatory 18% to over $100 or 6 people checks). It was a Friday night with lovely music. We sat on the heated porch and decided we wanted a nice drink. The server pointed to the menu part where the liquor is displayed (no prices, just pictures). She kept pushing for the nice drink that's big. She said it was big enough to share so me and my friend shared 1. It was a big "fishbowl-style" drink (see picture). Every time the server came back to the table, she kept asking if we wanted something else to drink. We kept saying no because the drink was huge. Come to find out, the drink was $36!!! I don't mind paying for it but make it worth my while. It was a weak and "juicy." For food, I ordered the Carne Asada. It was just OK. It was a thinner cut of meat that what I'm used to and even though I asked for Medium, it was cooked Well (probably cuz it was a thin cut of meat. My other issue is that they charged me for salad even though the picture clearly showed salad with my Carne Asada. I was charged $3 extra. When asked, she said these were mere "serving suggestions" and they "charge for everything." Now to top everything off, I asked for water and asked for lemon. I was brought 2 bottles of water (that's fine) but they CHARGED ME for lemon... $1.90!!!!! When I asked her, she said "oh we charge for everything here. This is fresh squeezed limes". First off, why would I assume that lemon is not free. I asked for lemons thinking that I'll get a little wedge on my glass. Not $2 worth of lime juice! After I found out I was charged for it, I made sure to drink it and not waste it!!!! Lol My overall experience was "meh". I don't mind paying for the things I buy but warn me ahead of time of basic things like extra charge for limes/lemons. As sure as heck I only left her 18%. She recommended we come here since she has visited various times. The food here is typical Colombian cuisine, including arepas, empanadas, bistec encebollado (beef steak with sautéed onions), coffee, and the traditional Colombian breakfast. The food is really good. The place is beautiful inside. I come here pretty early, and there have been very few patrons, which I like in the morning. The service was good as well. We speak Spanish, so it was easier to communicate with the waiters who also speak Spanish. Everything was well taken care of, and the prices were very reasonable. I live up the street from this restaurant and I finally got the chance to visit. The service was good, but I was not impressed. The inside is a little overcrowded. I was shocked to see the limited options for appetizers since I am big on appetizers. I was a little disappointed that we did wait awhile to get our drinks, especially when there were only 5 people eating inside. I can understand adding gratuity because I'm sure a lot of people don't tip. But having the suggestion of 20% and 25% tip after enforcing gratuity seems excessive. It's like they want a 40% tip and it's done in a way that you wouldn't even notice. It consists of a long strip of pork belly (chicharron), skirt steak (bistec), a fried egg, chorizo, an arepa, fried sweet plantains (maduros), a bowl of beans, avocado, and rice. Although this was ordered at the second branch, the flavor and portions are still the same. Lengua a la Criolla ($14): Tasty! The beef tongue was tender and soaked up the savory (and slightly sweet), tomato and onion-based Colombian Creole sauce. I received 4 large slices and a few small-to-medium slices. My order came with rice, a side salad with avocado, and fried plantains (tostones) Pargo Frita ($20): Delicious! The presentation was great, but the taste was even better. This came with rice, tostones, and a side salad with avocado. The fish was fresh, flaky, and perfectly fried; it wasn't a minute overcooked. As for flavor, it was great. It matches well with the green and red sauce served to every table. SERVICE: The waitress for my table was very friendly to my table. If you know chicharron it's definitely not supposed to be chewy. -They charge you for each pre-packaged water that you order without an option for tap water. Honestly it could have been from the two and placed in their cup for all I know. -Incorrectly processed the bill and actually charged more. After the explanation as to how were were charged more and given back the wrong amount of money a few times they refunded a friend of mine. I will do agree though that it also depends of your server. Overall the food is great, I think they hired better kitchen staff or the staff from the other location teach this one, because is pretty comparable. The popular bandeja paisa is excellent. Now, you do have to try the Guacamole and chips, that is a piece of heaven on earth. The Piña Colada is excellent as well. They have a bar right in the middle of the first floor. Ample seating in the first floor and more in a second floor. Bathrooms are nice and clean. When we crave Colombian food, we go to Parador Rojo. I prefer the original location down further Morris Ave. near downtown, but parking there is hard. My husband always orders Bandeja Paisa. When I take spoonfuls of the beans to mix in with the white rice and cut off a cube or two of their crispy pork belly, the result is simply, happiness. Yeah, but that's not even half of what's in Bandeja Paisa. It has avocado, fried eggs, chorizo and bistec (grilled thin steak), plantains and arepa. I would call it a perfect brunch dish- good for two people. Best downed with tea, but this is a Colombian restaurant so I always have coffee. In the smaller location, they make better coffee.
