My boyfriend and I had tried this place a few years ago and had a pretty okay experience. We were not inclined to go back until about a week ago when we decided to give it another chance since it had been a few years and more positive reviews has accrued lately. First I'll talk about the positives: The ambiance was nice - it was cozy, cute decor, soft lighting. The food was also quite good. I really enjoyed my chicken marsala pappardelle and my boyfriend liked his gorgonzola gnocchi as well. Our waiter was also friendly and helped me choose between two dishes. Now for the not-so-positives: The service was very slow. There were only two other tables occupied besides us, and still it took almost 40 minutes for us to get our food. The worst part though was that my boyfriend had ordered a pizza, and it wasn't until 20 minutes after we had ordered that we were informed they were out of pizza dough and that he would have to order something else. It was fine that he had to order something else, but to wait so long to tell us felt pretty annoying. I also felt like the prices were fairly high and coupled with the slow service - I think it's safe to say it may be another few years before we return. We have been there about 4 times over a period of 5 yrs. when we visit Solano. We were looking forward to it but we were disappointed. The service is their biggest problem. Plenty of things were poorly executed but mostly I don't think there is good communication between the kitchen and servers. The follow up to a request is very poor and slow to resolve. When picking up the dishes at the table... it was horrible! They were dropped on each other with LOUD clanging. Sad because it could be a place I would return to again but probably will not. My wife is Italian, born and raised not just in Rome, but specifically in the area of the city known as Parioli. Just for this reason we decided to give this place a try. To be truthful, my wife's such an awesome cook, finding a restaurant we like is next to impossible, especially if it's Italian. Parioli Italian Bistro, however, was a joyous surprise. We started with the burrata, which was delicious. My wife is Celiac (i.e. can't eat anything with gluten, even contamination is a problem) and her spaghetti with clams was wonderful. I had the eggplant parmesan, which was spectacular. For dessert we shared a gelato, which was reminiscent of the gelato we eat when we visit my parents-in-law in Rome. Besides the great food, the price was very reasonable and the service was first rate. I HIGHLY recommend Parioli Italian Bistro. We will definitely be going back. read more

Unfortunate because the food was pretty good, but the service was so unbelievably bad, I felt like I had been robbed once I saw the bill. Had a reservation for a big group of about 25 (half were kids). My friend stopped by earlier in the day, and the owner assured him they could definitely accommodate. Arrived on time; they still needed to setup. No problem we thought; it's not very busy, probably 20 people seated inside, will be ready soon. We headed to the bar to order drinks. 20 minutes later, tables still not ready, drinks hadn't been made. After asking when we could sit (and where the drinks were) several times, they finally said they had another big group in the back (apparently where we were supposed to go) who didn't want to leave so our only option was to sit in the front patio, which clearly wasn't meant for dinner. Fine, whatever, everyone is hungry; but where are our drinks?! Sat down; waited another 20 minutes and several trips inside before anyone came to take a drink order. "Well we ordered several drinks at the bar 40 minutes ago, and you have our credit cards; any idea where those are?" Had to reorder the drinks with the waitress and physically go back to the bar to "cancel" the drink order we originally placed, 40 minutes ago, just to get our credit cards back. Again, there were 20 people seated inside; it's not as if this place was pouring drink after drink the past 40 minutes. We should have left immediately. Unfortunately, against our better judgement, we stayed. Ordered a few pizzas and plain pastas for the kids as well; that was all they could handle though, and asked us to wait on everything else. Mind you we've now been here 40 minutes after our reservation began. Another 15 minutes later and we're finally allowed to place our food order; albeit only after we protested when they initially asked us to "only order appetizers and salads right now; wait for entrees". We've been here an hour and have had nothing to eat or drink; we're ordering before we don't see you for another hour. Fast forward another 15 minutes, after we finally got drinks and kids pizzas (they forgot the kids pastas entirely; we had to wait another ten minutes for those) and two garlic breads. The drinks were fine but the wrong bottle of wine arrived; they brought the cheaper vintage. At that point we didn't even say anything for fear of the waitress breaking down and crying; we smiled and said thank you and moved on. Another 15 minutes of us sitting and waiting, and here comes the waitress. She brings a third garlic bread, apologizing for all the delays, saying it's on the house. A $7 side item; much appreciated. Meals came another 15-20 minutes later (we're now 1:40 past the reservation), and the food was good, but honestly no one really cared at that point; we just wanted to eat something. Ready to get out of there, one member of the party pays the bill, so we can split it later. Upon seeing the picture of the bill... wow. That free $7 garlic bread they were so generous to offer as the only concession? Was on the bill, charged in full. The bottle of wine? Charged for the more expensive vintage, despite getting the cheaper bottle. The kids pastas (spaghetti and red sauce)? Full $24/plate adult charge. The owner, who my friend made the reservation with and had assured him they could accommodate us, was nowhere to be seen after initially apologizing for the delay (about five minutes into this debacle). We received no concessions and no complementary anything, but were charged for what we didn't ask for and overcharged for what we did ask for (but didn't get). Worst restaurant experience of my life. If you can't handle a group of 25; no problem, it's not easy, we get it. Just say that before you accept the reservation, and then ruin everyone's night with the horrible service. read more

Sautéed calamari is probably one of the best I have had :) especially if you're looking for calamari that's uniquely different from the fried variety type that is common at other restaurants. We have had this place two times now when we visit Solana Beach and it's always scrumptious! I can only speak about the food because we always do take out. Eggplant parmigiana is my absolute favorite and this one is amazing! The flavor is so good, it's a little bit different than other places that I've had eggplant at but so yummy! I got mine with fettuccine Alfredo instead of penne with marinara and the Alfredo was very good as well. Pasta was cooked nicely, it was ready when they said it would be. We also had pepperoni pizza which was yummy, the crust was delicious. The portions are great. I will say that it is greasy but that didn't deter me one bit. read more

In town for a work trip. Trust me it's hard to be here for work and not for play. It's next to the courtyard where I am staying. I was so spent this afternoon... I almost stayed in my room and bought a bottle of wine for dinner.... But my husband talked me into at least getting out for dinner.... I walked a grand total of 1 minute to this little place next door. Yes, it is a little hole in the wall...... but a cute little hole in the wall. I sat at the bar. Sweetest waitress in the world took care of me as I talked to my husband on the phone while I ate. She was awesome.. so sweet and she seemed to feel my stress. The puttanesca with shrimp I had was VERY good. The olive appetizer was incredible too! I loved this place. I got tiramisu to go ( you know... for breakfast haha). So happy I stopped in this place and didn't let a few negative reviews about service keep me from going. This is a very authentic family run Italian restaurant. It took me back to my last visit to Italy! The food was flavorful and delicious! I ordered the tagliatelle with Bolognese sauce and the pasta was cooked perfectly al dente. The homemade sauce was amazing! This is the type of restaurant where you come to relax and sip a glass of wine and take your time. As I mentioned previously, it's family run so if you're looking to get in and out quickly or serve a group of 20+ people then it might not be the spot if they're busy. But for me, it was absolutely perfect...a nice relaxing evening with wonderful food made from scratch with authentic Italian flavors! We didn't eat there but as we walked there being down the street from our hotel it was nice and clean with tables outside and in with a bar as you enter. Food was great ! As it looked just like the picture it didn't disappoint. Service was great, food was done by the time we walked there and the ambiance is just a laid back relaxing atmosphere. I'm amazed by the reviews I read! The place is very neglected. We sat at a boot that missed leather on the sit and was covered by a blanket! The bathroom was NOT clean and while I turned on the water the faucet came apart! A waitress, not Italian, was the only server! She was just ok, not very friendly for sure! She served our pasta without saying a word and walked away. When I asked for some parmigiano on my pasta her reply was: just a minute! Well usually you serve the pasta and ask the costumer if they would like some cheese! I had cheese ravioli, the sauce was so thick it gave me reflux all night! My friend had chicken parmigiana. The chicken was thinner than a shoe sole! Huge piece because it was beaten to dead before it was fried to a crisp! Same sauce on top of the chicken that was used on my ravioli! Never mind the overly cooked penne that came with the parmigiana. I ordered an artichoke appetizer and that was fair! Lots of garlic makes everything better! Very disappointing! Oh we are so thankful we ate here! Received a recommendation from a Del Mar racetrack friend we met today (thanks James and Mary) and we were so thankful to find good Italian food nearby to the race track! I will say Carpaccio and garlic bread were underwhelming but the service, the entrees, and dessert turned it around! They were really busy since the race track just let out, even though we had a reservation, we were late because of traffic. Thankfully they had one table left inside.
