NORTH ITALIA @ DEL MAR Parking is available in the garage parking lot, and the location is in Del Mar Highlands, surrounded by plenty of shops and restaurants. It's the perfect place to walk around, shop, grab a meal, and spend a few hours. I really love Del Mar, and this shopping center is definitely one of my favorites. I've been to the Fashion Valley location before and really enjoyed it, so I was excited to try this one. I also had no idea that North Italia is co-owned by The Cheesecake Factory, which was pretty interesting! I ordered the Chicken Pesto Pasta, and it was absolutely delicious. The pesto was flavorful, the chicken was incredibly moist, and I loved the pine nuts and capers, they added the perfect texture and flavor. If you're a pesto fan like I am, you really can't go wrong with this dish. The service was excellent, and the ambiance was beautiful. I especially loved the outdoor seating because it was bright, open, and made for such a relaxing dining experience. I came here with a larger group of 15 for a celebration with a reservation. We were seated right at our time and they had a bunch of tables together for us. The waitress was really nice and helpful. She did a great job getting all of our orders correct and was prompt with responding to our requests. In my opinion the service and ambiance were the best part of the restaurant. The food was honestly just okay for me. There are so many other great Italian restaurants that I would rather go to at a similar price point. Our table shared the white truffle garlic bread which was pretty tasty with a nice creamy sauce and crispy crust. For the entree my husband and I shared the strozzapreti pasta and the pig pizza. The pasta was claimed to be a creamy, truffle and cheese pasta with an herb roasted chicken. It wasn't that creamy, there wasn't really a truffle taste, and the chicken honestly just felt like a shredded rotisserie chicken. The pine nuts were a nice addition and the pasta itself was a nice texture but overall the dish was very underwhelming. The pizza we got was like a meat lovers pizza. Very nice restaurant with a relaxing vibe, the staff was very friendly and welcoming. Our server Kailee was awesome, very attentive and helpful when it came to the menu. The food was amazing, the kids pizza was tasty made with a fresh dough. We had the meatball ragu and let me tell you that dish had great flavor and along with homemade pasta (at least that's what I was told) lol either way awesome dish. They brought out a delicious tiramisu for my wife's birthday which was the cherry on top. The one bummer was they had no focaccia bread. I have lived near this location for over a year and finally decided to check it out. We went during their happy hour, which runs from 3-6 PM Monday through Friday and is available at the bar area only. The ambiance at the bar was relaxed, with a warm, social energy that made it feel like a great after work spot. It had a casual but polished vibe, and you could tell it is a popular time for people to unwind and catch up over drinks and small plates. The space felt inviting overall, although seating choice does matter depending on the time of day. We ordered the HH $10 Sicilian meatballs, the $12 cacio e pepe arancini, and the $10 chicken pesto garlic knot sliders. My personal standouts were definitely the arancini and the meatballs. Both had great flavor and texture, and I would happily reorder them again. Service was decent, especially considering we were sitting at the bar. One small note is that I would recommend sitting facing the back if possible, as the sun came in pretty directly and made it a bit bright and uncomfortable at times. I enjoyed a business lunch at this location of North Italia on a Wednesday at noon. It was blazing hot that day and we decided to sit inside. We were seated at a comfortable, air conditioned, table of 4. I took charge and ordered the Cacio e Pepe Arancini (crispy risotto, pecorino romano, crushed pepper blend, with a pesto aioli...$16). When the server was walking away, my friend grabbed my arm and said, "What did you order??". I told her and she said to the server, "We will have an order of the White Truffle Garlic Bread too please." (house-made ricotta , mozzarella, grana padano, and fresh herbs...$18.5). Both were good and if you are not on Keto, the garlic bread is an excellent choice. She was eating "light" but ate most of the bread. It's killer and they take it to the next level with the garlicky cheesy ricotta kicker. It is ridiculously expensive for a plate of cubed bread, but I'd order it again. We enjoyed the Arancini too although the side of pesto aioli needs some work. I wanted to order something different for a change and focused in on the the Squid Ink Tonnarelli (tiger shrimp, calamari, wild fennel pollen, mint, in a spicy tomato sauce...$28) I eat out a lot and this was the best pasta dish I have had in recent memory. Although it wasn't technically tonnarelli (a square pasta), it was really spaghetti, but it tasted so good that I'm willing to give them a pass. It was delicious. The seafood was cooked to perfection and the spicy tomato sauce that clung to the homemade noodle that was perfectly cooked and tasted fantastic. It was a memorable dish to be sure. It also had a nice spicy kick. Highly recommended. One of our guests didn't get his food until long after the rest of us were served and it was a bit uncomfortable, but when it finally came, all was good. I'd go back in a minute for a bowl of the tonnarelli pasta, a side of garlic bread and a stiff martini. Not bad for an Italian place. Located in the one paseo shopping area, we came to celebrate a friends birthday. They have a big indoor area and a decently sized outdoor patio. For food I got the hot honey prosciutto pizza and my partner got the seasonal salad (grilled asparagus, avocado, broccolini, sweet corn, heirloom tomato, fregola, goat cheese, pistachio, avocado vinaigrette) and added chicken. I also got their Italian spritz which was their take on an aperol spritz. Food wise the pizza flavor was really good. I was worried the honey might be too sweet but it wasn't overpowering. The dough itself was a little tough and didn't have that much flavor. My partner loved his salad although he said the chicken was served cold and he would have preferred it warm. My drink was forgettable. I would have preferred a standard aperol spritz. They added a "citrus smash" that I felt like watered down the drink. My coworker and I took the train to visit a new coworker in our nearby office. We already love North Italia so it was an easy decision. Our new coworker had never been so I was worried we hyped it up too much. We did not. Not only was the food delicious as always. (I get the salmon). But we told the staff it was our birthdays (mine was a few days prior and my other coworkers were later in the week) and they gifted us not only a dessert of our choice (Bombellini FTW) but also the tiramisu and dessert pudding AND a sip of Moscato. I honestly didn't think we'd get anything since it wasn't even a birthday that day but they went above and beyond. It was such a nice and kind gesture that I believe the owner or manager went out of their way to do for us. It made welcoming our new coworker even easier and more celebratory than we expected. As a Yelp Elite, I've experienced a lot of great service and a lot of not so great service- so want a special shoutout out for Bella because she truly goes above and beyond every time. The good: - the food is generally good especially when eaten hot or warm - the budino was amazing a couple of the times we ordered it The bad: - they get incredibly busy many nights. On its own this sounds not too bad. You might wait excessively long for table or service. But the really bad part is they don't manage the queues well. The estimates of waiting are often waaaay off from accurate. We frequently would wait over 15 minutes to be greeted by anyone after being seated. - if you order TO-GO food, the time they provide is usually no where close to how long you will wait for your food. About 1/2 the time I got to-go food, my food was more than 30 minutes late from the estimated time. Twice as late as 45 minutes. This is out of maybe at most 10 to go orders. - about 1/3 of those amazing budinos were not so amazing - curdled actually and totally disgusting. The zucchini chips were good but several of them were too cooked. Tasted like salted air. I think if they were a little tiny bit thicker, you'd get more zucc flavor! Think potato chips but in zucchini form. The price is kind of expensive for what it is, I think it could be better priced at $6. Also, ordered from their new menu the Garlic Knot Meatball Sliders. The size of these were bigger than I thought they'd be! It also came with a side of salad. The garlic bread knots were so light and fluffy. The garlic/cheese on top was beautifully crispy golden that it reminded me of a Costco Chicken Bake. The interior contained a juicy delicious meatball! I don't remember what else was in it, but the spread was delicious! I would order this and share with the table. It was so big and quite filling. Also, we ordered the $23 Hot Honey & Smoked Prosciutto Pizza! I loved the crust and how thin the pizza was. What I didn't love was the fact that it wasn't cut properly. It seemed like they added the toppings after firing! Because none of the meats were sliced through and it just all completely fell off the pizza when I went to pick it up. We did have a knife they gave us, but a pizza cutter or pizza scissors would have been much more helpful. The crust had great char to it that I enjoyed. The pear shaped cheese aka scammorza, got quite rubbery and just felt off the pizza in clumps. I don't think I'm a huge fan of the Calabrian hot honey part as I would be. I got some chili pepper seeds that made it less satisfactory to eat. Overall, this pizza was just ok. I wouldn't personally order it again. For the 3 of us, lunch was around $56.04! Not too bad compared to other places, but still priced a bit higher than you'd think. A place to come to if you don't mind paying a little extra. Nice portion sizes and great service. Came back and tried the chicken Parmesan for lunch. It was excellent: the chicken was well breaded and very crisp. The food came out of the kitchen promptly and was still piping hot and super fresh. The pasta was perfectly al dente and the sauce was satisfying, but not overwhelming. One of the better chicken Parmesans I've had. read more

We came to North Italia during SD restaurant week. This was my first time visiting. From their prefix menu, I selected the Sicilian meatballs as my appetizer, which was savory and delicious served on creamy polenta. For my main dish, I chose the braised short rib lumache. It wasn't what I expected, but still very tasty and surprised me. I also had the opportunity to try the squid ink tonnarelli from my sister's order. It was a tad spicy for us both. The waiter was kind and generous to exchange her dish for the braised short rib instead. Lastly, I had the salted caramel budino for dessert which I thoroughly enjoyed. Overall, I felt the food portions were very giving. It was pretty busy tonight, likely due to restaurant week. The customer service here was excellent. I would say the only issue I encountered was finding parking on a Friday night. Other than that, it was a pleasant experience. read more
