What a throwback to old school NJ deli's... First off, this is a family atmosphere when you walk in, not only are the owners family, but they treat the customer like family as well. They have a wide variety of sandwiches and deli meats for sale, and a beautiful steam table full of wonderful Italian food that will make your mouth water. There's a deli in Hackensack that I used to frequent. They had the best sandwiches in the world and I've been bragging about them since I left the Garden State in 2005. When my girlfriend and I were back in Hackensack a couple weeks ago, I decided to give her a taste. Unfortunately, my sense of direction isn't as good as it used to be and we used up half of our hour long break getting lost. At the last minute we stumbled upon Parisi Deli--a place I had walked by 100's of times, but never tried. I figured any sandwich in Jersey was better than anywhere else, so we went in. The service was outstanding. I felt like I was at my friend's house for Sunday dinner--except I was allowed to choose what I wanted for lunch. After making my food, I was allowed to sit at a table and patiently eat the meal before making my way to the counter and paying. The conversations while I was eating made me feel at home, like everyone was a regular. Unfortunately if I could go back in time, Parisi Deli would not be the one deli I chose to have my girlfriend experience. The chicken cutlet I got was fantastic, but about a third the amount of what I expected. The fresh mozzarella was a very thin strip, as opposed to the fat chunks at most other NJ delis. The sandwiches at Publix had more meet than these, which resulted in my taking the meat and cheese from both halves of my sandwich and making it into half of a real sandwich. Despite not loving the amount of food I got, the home made root beer that I got was possible the best I ever tasted. There's something nice about going into a deli that has been around, under the same family's care, since my parents were toddlers, and getting a soda that they made. It's soothing to feel like your in a small town, when right outside the front door is the hustle and bustle of a city. Next time I'm in Hackensack, I'll probably only stop by Parisi's to say high and grab 15 sodas, but will get my sandwiches down the street. read more

Instead I called directly to Parisi. They were so nice to deliver my food and I return the wrong order. Sometimes it is better to order directly from the restaurant. I haven't been here since the 80's. WOW! Same family owned business. Same real quality breakfast and lunch. I transferred back to the NJ office after 30 plus years of working in Manhattan. I'm so glad to see these guys where still here (in business). Now the two sons (real people-not fake) are behind the counter and they pick up right where the first generation leaves off. The hot specials are top notch and the sandwiches are made with TLC just the same as it was back in the 80's when the my crew used to come here for breakfast and lunch. Great, great, great local deli. They've got a decent beer and liquor selection as well. There are several tables inside if you want to dine in but don't expect a formal setting. What you really want to come here for is the hot food on their big board. The chicken cutlet and chicken parm is top notch. The taylor ham, egg, and cheese could use another egg or a thicker slice of ham though, it was pretty thin, but at $2 I can't really complain all that much. Another tiny misstep is that they don't sell any milk, only Muscle Milk and Yoo-Hoo (which we all know has no milk in it whatsoever). I've only been here twice and so far I've been impressed with their food. I'm looking forward to trying out the rest of the menu. And the owner is a friendly and decent guy, so if you want to stick around and chat it up, he'll be happy to oblige. Parking is tight. There are 15 minute spots in front of the deli but there should be a couple of open spots on the adjacent side street. Mrs. Parisi has been cooking and baking here since 1956. Way before most people that are reading this were born. I still do not understand how the "N.Y. Times" has not reviewed this deli, established in 1946. Sandwiches, soups, pastas, olives, cheeses, salads, cheese or meat filled ravioli, lasagna, sea food, chicken cutlets, and a plethora of seasonal Italian food. This is 100 % family owned and run. This is a serious approach to simple food (and done right ). I have without hesitation used this shop to cater for a holiday (especially at Christmas ) and Super Bowl Parties. It is perfect. This changing menu can best be found by requesting a daily fax. The bulk of the food is displayed at 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. And, breakfast is great,too. Liquor is to go. This is real food in a processed food world. For a holiday haul of captivating food, this is a reasonable train ride from Manhattan in order to pick up custom trays of "any Italian delight". Prices at this place is great!!! However, you do get what you pay for - for example - their breakfast sandwich - taylor ham egg cheese for $1.99 - dont expect it to be pork roll or taylor ham. Its just regular DAK or deli ham. I was really hoping for taylor ham too! read more
