Delis are to North Jersey what Abbott is to Costello. Every town has them--some old, some new. The Italian deli might be the greatest culinary show on this planet--a wonderland of sights, sounds, and especially smells. Located in a highly industrial area of South Hackensack, and right off of Route 80 is a brick oven bakery called Clemente producing a huge selection of bread, including homemade pizza, focaccia Barese, "sausage bread," zeppole, taralli, biscuits, and friselle Clementini (they're a big wholesaler). The shop also has a ton of prepared food servicing the many office and blue-collar workers in the area; it's an excellent place to have a sandwich made for one. Upon entering as regulars to this local favorite establishment, my partner and I decided on Chicken Cutlet with fresh mozzarella cheese and roasted peppers on a toasted wheat wrap as well as Chicken Salad on a sun-dried tomato wrap for indoor dining. They are not cheap, but one gets what one pays for in terms of taste, freshness, and authenticity. The portions were a healthy size for another meal. This is a Hackensack classic. It's a true Italian deli but also has a lovely store area and cooked food area. The bread here is fantastic. It's pricey for sure, but the food is first class. One of the better options in the Bergen area for Italian sandwiches. The bread and ingredients are very fresh and they have a wide selection of toppings. So many different combinations here, it will take you a while to try them all. I personally prefer to build my own but the price can run you up pretty quickly so be careful when adding toppings if you go that route. To be frank, the price is very high for what you're getting, however the portion sizes are good. They also have other items including pizza, cannoli's, chips, soda, etc. Really everything you'll need. I haven't tried them yet though I'll have to get the cannoli's at some point. Service is not great. Always rude and hurry you if you ever ask questions or don't have an answer immediately. Was given attitude when I pointed out an error they made and acted like they did me a huge favor when I asked them to fix it. Small cafe seating inside but not very clean. However, I would recommend dining in if you're able to swing it because surprisingly the sandwhich doesn't hold up well if you do take-out especially if you get the fresh mozzarella. This was a fantastic spot for a lunch near Teterboro on a layover. The line moved rather quickly with 3 guys making sandwiches and filling orders. I ordered the Large Clemente Special with a side of their homemade chips. The sandwich was massive, the prices were reasonable, and the chips were tasty. I loved the sandwich even though I didn't know what was on it when I ordered. The menu isn't very descriptive so I just went off of other Yelp pictures and decided to try the special. Been coming here for years. Price has gotten ridiculous. Sandwiches also less full and no longer worth the increased fees.. Price on board is $16 incorrectly marked my sandwhich at $19.50.. I have no problem paying but when brought to the attention of the owner about incorrect pricing argued with me that is the correct price. Did not want to continue to argue over the $19.50 sandwich. Paid and left. Will not be returning after coming here for years. I love me some good Clemente sandwiches! Thinking of them makes me drool. They have such great selection of sandwiches, salads, and more. Their portions are humongous and don't fall short on excellence. Service is always great and they're always quick you can call in your order or order online. I've never had issues with either one. This is a very old school major place in South Hackensack - the kind of place one would arrange a sit down with Paulie, Veto and the boys (I prefer the back of Bada Bing tho). Great selection of Italian deli items and a TON Of cooked meals - pastas, meat, salads, etc. While you wait the counter staff feeds you samples - and you can't refuse. But nor do you want to - fantastic stuff. So easy to over eat here and still feel good because quality is so nice. Bakery/pastry I have to say is so-so. Pastey, over sweet cannolis and fairly standard everything else. The state of canoli making has been on a downhill slope for years in North Jersey tho in general. Only a scant few places do them right - simple and not overlay sweet. I think there may he gavone bacteria in the water supply here. Or maybe too many trips to the old country where it's easy to be spoiled. Italian deli items can be over the top expensive tho. And nothing particularly special. All that said / I like Clemente's very much - a regular. And a big fan of the milk biscuits they sell commercially and other commercial items you can get here or in grocery stores. First time customer. Tried the "Vitacado." Not gonna lie, at first I was not crazy about the bread or the pesto . The bread felt hard and chewy and the pesto was a little more oily then I had hoped. I put the sandwich away in the fridge to give it a second try later. I am SO GLAD I saved it. Once the sandwich sat and marinated in the fridge, the bread softened up but still had a great crisp and the pesto hydrated and seasoned the bread to give it the consistency and feel of a well done pizza. The flavors from the ingredients married to make a taste experience that is incomparable to other sandwiches. It's tangy, salty, spicy, and creamy. Today's review takes us to South Hackensack's industrial area where you'll find Clemente's Bakery. I've been a fan for a long time but with all reviews, you will get my honest opinion based on that day's experience. *Side Note Clemente's was originally located in Union City and was called Central Bakery* Clemente's is a provider of bread and focaccia for delis and supermarkets around Northern NJ. Also, most of the focaccia you see in delis comes from this bakery too. Even with that, they still have a full storefront that includes tables to enjoy your purchases. On to the reviews The mozzarella in one word Wonderful and that's why I did a separate review. Creamy, Flavorful, and just the right salt. At $10.99lb it is one of the most expensive out around but spend the extra $1-2 it's worth it. The bread here is some of the crustiest you'll find around but it's still airy inside. Makes for a great sandwich or dip in your Sunday sauce. They also have many types, the one pictured is the medium loaf at $2.75 No cold cuts were ordered but in past they are professionals and they know how to slice Italian meats paper-thin. The last item that was purchased was something I've actually recommended to a few people. The St Joe's pastry has been enjoyed on more than one occasion but unfortunately, this time was not one of them. I'll start with the custard, it had an overly strong lemon taste and the zeppole itself was dried out. The cannoli zeppole was also very dry but the cannoli cream was good. I have to say at $9.98 for the two it was quite disappointing. Tasting a slight refrigerator taste I am thinking these were made yesterday and were not fresh. This is one of the places that I used to eat lunch at when I worked in the area many years ago. I had a craving for an Italian hero with fresh mozzarella and a surge of nostalgia. I was happy to see that the place is larger and has a larger parking lot. I forgot how friendly the proprietors are and great memories came rushing back! I got the Clemente special and devoured it. I walked into the deli and I ask for an egg and cheese on a croissant, if they have it (some places don't have croissants, just bagels). They, at first, tell me it will take 20 minutes...what? Why in the world would it take that long? The young man behind the counter tells me to go to the other line and order it. Okay, don't see how that makes a difference but I did it. They hand me a bag about 5-6 minutes later, but it has some kind of meats in it, not my food. Luckily I checked before going to the cashier. They then say they can't fulfill my order, even after waiting for a bit to get it. I ask why, and they said they're "too busy right now" to explain it to me. Awesome spot. A food oasis surrounding in a commercial warehouse area. Our sandwich maker was super nice an attentive. They load the hero w tons of freshly sliced cold cuts. One was enough for me and the wife to share. We moved on to the baked goods counter. We got a nice loaf of bread, some pastry and a heart shaped cookie for the toddler. Too bad the counter girl was so absorbed in getting back to her phone to text, she forgot the cookie. Hence the tantrum ensued when we got home and discovered it missing. A solid spot all around. This is not your run of the mill bakery. So do not get fooled by the name, in fact this place is more of a deli / bakery / specialty food on stop shopping. I ordered the Clemente special; the ingredients inside the hero are great.... the bread is over baked and hard on the bottom. To the point that you don't eat the bottom bread. The lobster tail pastries are a No No. I would like to try some of there focaccia next time and maybe some cookies. The focaccia pizza is probably where it's at, but I wanted a hero and that's what I get. I also tried the beet salad, pretty good...not anything to write home about. Food is delicious. Workers are fantastic. Management, you need to fix the following. A year ago my usual sandwich cost $9.00 today it cost me $15.00 for 5 slices of parmacotte, 3 slices of Genoa and 3 slices of provolone on the large flat white bread, when a year ago I was getting more meat!! Are you kidding me. My suggestion to the future deli goer, buy by the 1/4 pound and get some bread, be hell of a lot cheaper. Random how I found this little jewel in S. Hackensack. I have been on a hunt for a new italian deli since moving from JC. (Yes, its been a while since I moved.) I found a solid chx cutlet place but still hadn't found my cold cut deli with good fresh mozz. I bought a random pastry at Maywood market and saw the name and after a simple google search found out the origins of the yummy pastry also makes sandwiches! Since I found out about this place, I've been stopping by every other week. Oh, I tried to go more frequently but a few times they were closed. So for those we are venturing out, make sure they are open before you go.
