I like this place a lot, it's called, "Cosmo's Salumeria" in Hackensack, NJ and I've been wanting to try this place for at least a year because it was ranked in the top 25 by The Star Ledger. This day I said, "Today is the day and I'm getting a freaking sandwich from this joint.", so I rode my road bike here and it was a good 25 minute bike ride to get there. But when I finally got there it was surprisingly closed. I was confused because Yelp says they open at 8am and here I was there at 8:30 am and closed. I was super disappointed and was like ok today isn't the day I'm getting this sandwich but hey at least I got a nice workout getting here and back. Just when I was about to leave something told me to call and lo and behold Cosmo answered. He said they open at 9am and that he was making fresh mozzarella before they opened for the day. I told him on Yelp it says your open at 8 am and he said Yelp makes up their own hours but for me to wait and he'll make me the sandwich and it should be ready in 10 minutes. Awesome and he did do the selection #1 sandwich in 10 min and all before he was officially opened for me consisting of sopp, capp, salami, ham, fresh mozz, sharp provolone, sweet peppers and LTO. That was awesome customer service to me. So as I went inside to pay, he told me $10. In my mind,"I'm like seriously for this heavy sandwich I thought it would be at least $12. What a great deal" I thought. I paid and thanked him and rode my bike home burning off some calories before putting them back with this sandwich . It is a pretty good sandwich and for the price you would pay at a crappy Subway place. I can see why this place is popular and will be back for more sandwiches. We had the #1 (ham, salami, soppresata, capicola, mozzarella, sharp provolone, sweet peppers), and the # 6 (roast beef, turkey, muenster). The ingredients for #1 were great, and they gave a good amount of meat/cheese. But the bread ruined the whole sandwich for me. It was so tough and chewy that my jaw hurt after a while. The #6 was basic and didn't have that much meat in it. I feel like I probably could have just gone to Shop Rite for this one to buy ingredients myself to make a better/cheaper sandwich. This is a no frills deli. They offer hot and cold sandwiches and a few salads. There was a steady line on Saturday around 1pm. They have parking in the back. The #1 is definitely the most popular. It was ordered by most people waiting for sandwiches while I was there, as well as the chicken parm. I ordered the #1 and #8. #1 is their Italian sub; it comes with 5 types of meat and 2 types of cheese. There is a slice of each. I would've preferred less types of meat and more of them. I added lettuce, tomato, onion and oil and vinegar. It's 50 cents more for the lettuce and tomato. The sandwiches are reasonably priced. The two sandwiches and a small mozzarella salad was $26. CASH ONLY! My mom ate the #8. She said there was a lot of turkey but there was nothing special about the sandwich. The fresh mozzarella was great in the salad and on the sandwich. read more

The couple who run it are delightful and explain every thing that go on the subs and what shouldn't. The best! A friend told me they had the best Italian subs, and they do! First I love that their bread is crusty and light and is freshly made! (I'm allergic to barley, so I'm so happy I can eat their fresh bread which does not contain that ingredient.) I am writing here today to warn all my fellow Foodies out there that there is a terrible, impending problem rapidly taking place here in Bergen County (North NJ) And it's the dwindling amount of REAL Italian delis ( salumeria) in our area. I'm taking about the ones with huge cheese and salamis' hanging from the ceiling. Pictures of Italian soccer teams on the walls. Grocery items from (my forefather's land ) Italy. I grew up in an area of eastern Bergen County that you couldn't walk a block without seeing one after the other. I'd say there are MAYBE 10 good ones left in the whole county and Cosmo's makes a lot of Best of " lists. Small place with parking in the rear. They only take cash but it goes a long way. Recently we orders 3 ( approx 8") heroes on real crusty Italian bread, 2 sides of potato salad, 3 sodas, and 2 bags of Italian cookies\ crackers and it was about $40. I'd say this tops the list if we're talking $$ as you could feed an army pretty cheap. Italian combos, Meatball or chicken parmigiana, plenty of options to chose from. They can make you anything on the small menu or create your own. The hot dishes come out after 11am, and everyday there are different specials. There are a lot of great sandwiches in NJ - and many more in NYC - but there's just something special about this place. Cosmo and his wife and (daughter?) are a wonderful family and always make a point to engage with their customers - even when the line gets long around lunch. I always order the same thing - a #1 with hot peppers instead of sweet - and a few chicken cutlets for my toddler. They always remember me and Cosmo's wife even offered to teach my kid how to make her cutlets when COVID goes away. The sandwich itself is crazy good - like next level in every way. The meat is salty, they add sharp provolone and fresh mozzarella + those hot Italian peppers will make sure you remember the experience. This is in my opinion, the best Italian luncheonette that you can get a sandwich from. The owner, whose name is Cosmo only uses the best cold cuts, and he sandwiches and he puts plenty of it and eat sandwich. I was having a pre-Christmas get together, and I asked Cosmo to make me a four foot Italian cold cut hero. When he arrived at the shop to pick up the hero, it was nicely packed and cut into 3 to 4 inch slices. A container of oil and vinegar mix was given to season the hero. The 4 foot roll was perfectly baked and very flavorful to complement the large sandwich. When you go to the shop, you get a great sizable sandwich on either brick, oven bread or Italian bread and Cosmo as always great to have a conversation with. The food is the best and the price is very reasonable for the finest cold cuts that this salumeria uses for their sandwiches. read more

Cosmo's is one of those legendary local spots that you have to check out at least once. It is as straightforward of a deli as you can get. The line is single file and there is usually people in here. You better know your order when you are ready to go! I went with the #1. It was an italian sub with all sorts of italians meats. It wasn't overally salty and the bread was the perfect vehicle for the sandwich. I also went with the #2 with chicken cutlet and it was delicious.
