Park Slope Eye's customer service is the best in Brooklyn, bar none. I have been going to Dr. Bazan for at least 5 years now even though I have two optometrists in my family. And here's a story demonstrating why: After several years of wearing cheap daily disposable contacts, I decided to switch my contacts brand to a monthly to save some space in my bathroom, and Dr. Bazan was very helpful in my transition. Not only did he give me plenty of samples to try, he also educated me on the difference between dailies and monthlies - from pricing, even accounting for the cost of solution, to the meticulous step-by-step cleaning involved, mindful that I wear eye makeup. Even though he believed they were the best product for me, I ended up hating my choice and was uncomfortable in them for a couple weeks - believing it might just be allergy season. As soon as I notified Dr. Bazan that I wanted to switch to another brand, he said I was welcome to come back to exchange them anytime. I kept putting it off because I was busy with work, etc., and with travel plans on the horizon, I panicked to find the time to stop by the office. What happens next is unprecedented in medical services, let alone eyecare. Dr. Bazan took the time out of his day off to personally deliver the contacts to me in Bed-Stuy. Maybe I was just lucky that it happened to be convenient for him to drop off my contacts on a Sunday, but even so, from start to finish, Dr. Bazan managed my switch with customer satisfaction as his top priority. This guy. Wow. Not only does he try to upsell you on Biotrue/Bausch & Lomb products because he gets big time "consulting" fees (over $300,000 from these kickbacks alone, based on reporting under the Sunshine Act), and tricks you and coerces you into uncovered services so he can charge you OOP, but for a YEAR I've had the wrong prescription because he screwed up. I've had headaches every single day FOR A YEAR after he gave me a new prescription, and I finally went to an ophthalmologist. She said it was the prescription that was wrong and to go back and have him recheck me for free to correct the mistake. I explained the situation to him and asked him to recheck and wants me to pay $150 for him to correct HIS mistake. This guy is crooked, greedy, and can't even measure a prescription correctly. Beautiful, clean office with really friendly and attentive staff and equipped with the latest technology. Dr. Lee is wonderful -- so refreshing to have a young and truly professional optician for once! Her services are quick and informative, and she's always been able to answer any questions I have including those related to my medical history; her records seem very organized and she takes the time to review them unlike many other places. Appointment scheduling is available online but they respond to emails within an hour if you have further questions, which is extremely convenient. The office is also well-stocked with samples so while I've had others tell me that my particular prescription contacts had to be ordered, Park Slope Eye had it on hand for my last-minute request. They've also been generous with contact solution samples, which is always a plus. Never had a better optician! Truly satisfied. read more

First, let me say that the eye care at Park Slope Eye was excellent, but unfortunately was outweighed by the poor customer service, negligent accounting, and the contemptuous attitude Dr. Bazan seems to have toward his customers (See his responses to reviews on this page for examples.) Like other reviewers have mentioned, PSE had a number of accounting errors toward the end of 2012 and contacted customers years late about unpaid balances PSE had never billed them for. I received an initial bill with no explanation of when or what the charges were for. I eventually figured out they were for appointments over 2 years ago, for which I had never received a bill. Despite calling several times, I was never able to get an explanation of why I wasn't billed at the time and why PSE expected me to pay the balance two years later, long after I had changed insurance policies. If I had received a transparent explanation and an apology, I might consider going back. Like at least one other reviewer, I also witnessed Dr. Bazan verbally berate his staff in front of customers, which is consistent with his hostility toward any critical reviewer on this page. (Take note, especially, of the instance where he responded by posting details of a customer's medical care on Yelp, which needless to say is unethical behavior for a medical professional.) I'm truly disappointed PSE turned out to have so much baggage - I was very happy with my treatment, and wish the rest of the experience had matched it. read more

After nearly 20+ years of having corrective lenses and visiting multiple eye doctors, Dr. Bazan & Park Slope Eye is the best place I've ever gone to for my optical care. The equipment is as modern as it can get (no more air puff glaucoma test!) and Dr. B's thorough assessment is unmatched. Oh! The customer service here is the worst I have ever experienced. Front staff are rude and clearly don't care about their jobs. We waited 2 hours with a 3 year old and a five year old on our first appointment. Nobody explained what went wrong. The next time I arrived the front staff lied to my face. When I asked to speak with the doctor I was told she wasn't there, then 30 seconds later she came out of her office. They do not answer the phone. They have send me multiple text messages saying we'll do our best and email but won't explain anything. They don't even have the decency to call me when lenses aren't ready on time to explain the situation. It's the only business I've ever dealt with that refuses to speak with its customers. Avoid this place like the plague. I've actually never dealt with Dr. Bazan but looking at all the other reviews seems like I may have been lucky. Be aware of their cancelation fee of $50.00. Online booking is really convenient but comes with 24 cancellation fee even if you show up. I showed up for my appointment and decided to take your business elsewhere because they didn't take my insurance and coordinator was rude. They sent an invoice and threaten legal action. When I told them I would made an official complaint, the Dr. responded with: "If you proceed down that route, then we are prepared meet each action with our full effort and expertise. However, I do hope that you have a fair and just moral code. One in which you let prevail and in doing so make amends with us. " Jeez. pretty intense. I just wanted new glasses. This is an awesome place. It's located in a great area of Park Slope. You can knock out some shopping and a visit to the eye doctor in one day. This is really modern Optometrist Office. I, myself don't wear glasses, but they have a a huge selection of prescription glasses and sunglasses.The staff is super friendly and the Dr. Bazan is really awesome. There's snacks and drinks there. After a debacle with an eye appointment that I was supposed to have with the Eye Institute of NY where the office was closed during my scheduled appointment time (called and left a message asking for an explanation and have yet to hear from them...don't go there. Seriously. They suck.) and being fed up with wearing one contact lens for about a week and a half, I decided to just stop into Park Slope Eye on my way back from the Eye Institute in order to schedule an appointment to get an updated prescription in order to get contacts online. The staff was very warm and professional and was able to get me in right then...not only that, but as I had my appointment with Dr. Bazan, Mary was on the phone with my insurance company (all told, I think a total of 25 minutes) in order to see what kind of coverage I had. Great experience overall...I left with a new prescription, a new trial set of contacts and a scheduled follow-up for the next week to check on the new lenses. My mood improved ten-fold that day thanks to Park Slope Eye so definitely check it out....and what they say is true...an overabundance of snacks and refreshments are available while you wait! read more

I was greeted at the door by a friendly face, my coat was taken, I was offered coffee or tea, and while I waited for the good doctor I got to enjoy an impromptu art gallery. Great. The energy in the office is positive. The staff is happy to answer any questions and even help with recommendations. My experience with Dr. Bazan was great, and as a first timer to Park Slope Eye, I was more informed about my eye care than any experience I've ever had at Sears Optical. After my eye exam, Yasmin, a gem among office staff, helped me pick out the PERFECT set of glasses. All I had to do was give her a run down of what my dream glasses would look like... and BAM there they were. They arrived right on time 1 week later. My family and I have been visiting Dr. Bazan for years. He is patient, thorough and honest. He has such a calm manner and never makes you feel rushed. Kid friendly too with lots of delicious snacks. My best option was contacts and I had no idea how to wear them. He and his staff worked with me until I left knowing how (took almost 45 minutes). It's been a few weeks since I first put on my new glasses, and all I've been getting are compliments, compliments, compliments-- from friends, relatives, coworkers and the occasional stranger. Guys i have been to 10/10 optics before and they didnt perform dilation on my eyes....i left that place extremely unsatisfied because the only suggestion that guy has was you buy rigid lenses which was a hugh investment but Bazan came up with the solution ....i can go on and on about this place...it rocks! read more

After reading all of the great reviews for Park Slope Eye, I was really disappointed with my own experience. Sure, the table of drinks and snacks may be appealing, but I'm not there to sit on expensive faux-modern furniture and sip bottled water; I'm there for a decent pair of glasses and a reliable eye exam. Dr. Bazan was incredibly friendly and seemed completely capable. The rest of the staff, on the other hand, struck me as fairly incompetent. The receptionist forgot to return my license, meaning I had to go back later to get it (partly my fault, of course), and the salesman was very distracted and impatient. When I inquired about a pair of prescription sunglasses (because buying them at the same time as my regular glasses meant a 10% discount through my vision plan), I was told it would run me about $800-that's *including* the insurance discount. What?! So clearly I declined (later I went to Kawaii in Manhattan and got a pair of prescription Ray-Bans for $200, no insurance discounts). As it was, the frames I chose (one the less expensive pairs) still ended up being between $300-$400. To make matters more irritating, I had issues with the frames themselves. After selecting a pair, paying and leaving, it struck my that the frames I had tried on in-store were very beat up and wobbly. I assumed they would never give me the model pair, but I was worried just the same, so I called to confirm. I was then told that they *do* sell the actual model pair and when I explained why I wanted a new pair, the receptionist protested until she went to investigate herself. She returned saying, Ohhh, yeah, I see what you mean. So, she placed an order for a new pair of frames, but told me it might take several additional weeks to receive them. Two weeks later, I go to pick up the frames and I'm handed a gift bag with the glasses and several items (cleaner, cloth) all branded 'Park Slope Eye.' Very nice and all, but no one had me try them on or adjust them to my face-a fairly standard practice. I would have rather had the help than the 'goodies.' All in all, it was fine, but I care more about price and quality service then a bunch of glitzy, meaningless stuff. I totally recommend SEE in Manhattan as an alternative-friendlier, better prices, and a better selection too. read more

Absolutely can't complain about their service, prices, selection, and the level of professionalism exhibited by these guys. Dr. Bazan is a very friendly, knowledgable guy (and a Yelper to boot). Their equipment was top-notch. Dr. Bazan was able to take a picture of the back of my eye and show me exactly what he was looking at and why it was significant, which made a big difference. In the past my optometrists have expressed concern at the shape of my optic nerve. The equipment at Park Slope eye was far superior to the equipment used at my old optometrist's office. This allowed for a more accurate assessment and, thankfully, a more positive prognosis. I figured I'd just get the exam and buy my contacts online, but through some creative rebatery I was able to get the contacts through Park Slope Eye for a bit cheaper than the lowest advertised price I could find online. But most importantly, as I waited for my dilation solution to take effect, Dr. Bazan offered me a beer or frappuccino. Totally boss. read more

Believe the hype- this place is awesome! I lost my glasses and I needed to get a new pair right away. I called this place in the morning, and I was able to get an appointment for the afternoon. She even got all my insurance info so that it was squared away when I got there. Now that is efficient! However, the beauty of this place does not stop there. Once you get there, you feel like you're entering a spa. You're greeted with tea, cookies, candy, coffee, and/or water. While you're munching on these fan favorites, you can relax on their couch, read a Timeout or New York Magazine, and chill to tasteful and trendy tunes. Although these aren't a crucial part of going to the doctor, it's these accoutrements that make the difference. When it comes to the appointment, Doctor Bazan is extremely thorough and helpful. He has explained things my eye doctors have never explained to me. He walks you through the entire appointment and shows you everything he sees in your eyes. That bedside manner is worth the slightly pricey frames they have in the store. When it comes to the frames, they have an excellent selection. You'll find yourself choosing so many that you can't choose. Yet never fear- that is why you have Yasmin in the office to help you out! She is so cool that you could chat it up with her forever. Plus, she has great taste and has helped me discover a different type of frame I would have never chosen myself. She also took digital pictures of me with the numerous choices I had trouble eliminating. After seeing the photos on the screen, it was easier to choose what I wanted. I came here on the fly last fall because I had one dilated pupil. I haven't fully re-located to Brooklyn, and when I called my eye doctor he told me to get to the ER or an eye doctor nearby, Park Slope Eye, it was. Not only were they gentle with my high strung phone call for an appt, once I got there they did everything they could to try and figure out the problem. Also, they explained everything they were doing and why. Turns out I just had some eye irritation. I love this place. I love these doctors. I went in for contacts, saw Dr. Bazan and Dr. Cohen. The office is cozy, and if you like your customer experiences to be high-tech, they're certainly that. You make your appointment on line, get email and text reminders, and can play with the office ipad while waiting. It's nice. But where they really shine is in personal service and attention. The monthly contacts, which were what I could afford, ended up feeling a little too blurry for me. Dr. Cohen saw me two more times for followups, changed my prescription slightly and recommended a better brand of eye drops, and insisted that the contacts be perfect before he gave them to me. In the middle of testing them, one of my contacts tore, and they immediately set me up with a new pair, no questions asked. When I finally went to pay for the contacts, I had all kinds of trouble using my health care account card. It took me several days to get the payment to him, and Dr. Bazan was nothing but patient and gracious about it. When I finally was able to pay the invoice, he got the contacts off to me that day. I was an inadvertently difficult customer, and everyone there was great. I got exactly what I wanted, and didn't feel any pressure to buy anything extra. This place has everything, friendly staff, friendly doctor, a quiet and calm atmosphere ( very important to me ), and WEEKEND HOURS! And although I don't live in Park Slope, this place seems to have a real presence in the community. They support local artists ( I actually met the guy who hangs his paintings in the office ) And Dr. Bazan himself actually friended me on Yelp :3 A word of warning to those who bring their own frames in for fitting: Be careful and make sure the frames are of good quality. The staff is very honest about what is or isn't possible for fitting, which I give them lots of credit for. The frames can't be made of "cheap" plastic. Keep that in mind if you're bringing in your own vintage frames. Dr. Bazan and the entire crew at PSE are enthusiastic and super helpful. I bought a pair of prescription Rudy Project glasses from them last year for bike racing; they are totally tricked out, nice design touches, and an absolute necessity for 5 AM races. No one else would have been able to help me put together the perfect pair of custom glasses like they did. I get my contacts here as well, and besides always ensuring a good fit through testing and asking the right questions, they stay on top of the technology so that I know I'm getting the right lens for me. These guys are incredible. I'm from out of town. My glasses got stolen in a mugging less than 24 hours before I was going to Europe, so I was both feeling down and in a big hurry. These guys came through on both counts. The office is beautifully decorated, the Dr. Bazan was efficient and confidence-inspiring, the optician (Candice) helped when we needed help and chatted us up like old friends while we were waiting, and they went absolutely above and beyond to get my glasses made before my trip. And they took my insurance. You have to love tech savvy companies. First off, everyone I've met at the store is incredibly nice and they have AMAZING SNACKS (oh my goodness, it's a whole counter). And as I picked glasses that I liked (and the optician helping me was amazing at finding glasses that fit my face and I liked even if I wouldn't have picked them out myself), the optician logged them as my 'favorites' to review later and took picture of me in them and emailed them to me so I could peruse them later. And Dr Ritenour was really great about explaining everything he was doing and all his assessments (plus he's just really friendly) and even said that they could text or facebook mssg me with reminders to change my contact lenses - I mean that's awesome. The selection isn't crazy but they have 141's (http://141eyewear.com/) which are like TOMS for eyewear and I couldn't be happier that I chose this place to find my new glasses. read more

Greetings. I am writing to recommend Park Slope Eye but not for its candy diamond rings or fancy-pants frames. A couple weeks ago, I had what I thought would be a routine exam with Dr. Ritenour. WOW, what an eye-opener (hahahaha). He found some suspicious specks in the retinas of both eyes and sent me straightaway to an ophthalmologist for additional testing. The ophthalmologist was rather impressed that Dr. Ritenour saw the issue. So if you are in need of a recommendation for a very thorough optometrist, Dr. Ritenour could be your guy. While the office space is nice, I will not return to Park Slope Eye. The primary reason that I will not return is that I found Park Slope Eye to be extremely expensive. While the advertising is meant to attract young professionals, most young professionals will not be afford the services offered here. The doctor who saw me gave me a prescription for the most expensive contact lenses on the market (cost over $500 for a year's supply). He did not give me the option of trying different brands of contact lenses like my new eye doctor. In addition, the receptionist was not, in my opinion, knowledgeable or professional. I do not recommend going to Park Slope Eye. UPDATE: Dr. Bazan commented on my review, stating that it is fake. I assure you, it is not. I have been to Park Slope Eye. I have the $400 receipt to prove it. I would not waste my time writing a fake review of an eye doctor establishment. It would not be a good use of my time. I would like to add that I find it somewhat odd that a doctor has the time to make snarky comments on any negative review he receives. BAD Experience! Mr Bazan flat out refused to renew my contacts prescription for the brand I wore for the last 9 years based on the grounds of "they are no longer meeting my standard of care". I explained my situation with my insurance credit ending in a matter of days and my unwillingness to try out 2-3 other brands for no reason. Asked my friend who is in the business - no medical reason to deny my prescription for perfectly fine contacts brand, unless this was a pride or principle thing. Wasted my time, money and frustrated me in time of Covid, where the last thing I want is to change things I have been doing for almost a decade. First of all, I must mention that you can pretty much get me to do anything if you present to me a decent cup of coffee and a pop tart. They greeted me with both. BOOM! 10 awesome points. Dr. Bazan is the best eye doctor I have ever visited when it comes to explaining things. Very friendly yet thoroughly professional, always willing to answer any and every question and he explained every step of the process, he also is a great listener and asked all the right questions to let him draw out any issues that other doctors never even thought to ask about and could have missed - like family history of eye disease, I've had opthamologists that never did that! At first I was hesitant when they suggested a full exam and not just a quick 'read the chart' exam as I just needed an exam for a driver's license renewal, but now I am very, very glad that I had the full exam instead, it was excellent and well worth the peace of mind. This business really stands apart from any other. Handsdown, it's the best clinical AND customer service experience I've known. Here's my story: I met with Dr. Bazan for an eye exam months ago. I've had amblyopia my whole life (the kind that doesn't result in lazy eye, but is just bad vision in one eye). I thought that it was just something I would need to live with since it hadn't been corrected early enough as a child. Dr. Bazan changed that. He let me know there IS a way to correct it (yes, it will take work but so is life!) and arranged everything so that I went to the Eye Center of NY to meet with the faculty and get entered into an advanced program of therapy. He is truly a wonderful man who really cares about his patients. Every time I've come in since, he shows the most wonderful, professional warmth. Then, recently, I went in for a 2nd visit. I had a pair of sunglasses that I wasn't sure of the level of UV protection. Dr. Bazan sent them to his lab for free to check. Unfortunately, they lost my glasses. So, I feel like a bit of a hater because nearly everyone else on Yelp seems to have fallen madly in love with PSE. I will say that many of their comments are true - great customer service when you arrive, Dr. Bazan is extremely courteous (he even gave me and my boyfriend Starbucks gift cards for keeping us waiting for 30 minutes), great eyeglass fitting, etc. HOWEVER. I experienced several issues post-exam when I was purchasing my glasses and subsequently my contact lenses. First of all, my frames were chipped. Of course, I noticed this after I got home and I was too lazy to go back and say something about it because it was relatively minor. I know, shame on me, I can't really complain - but, check your purchase before you walk out of the office. Two - I felt extremely pressured to purchase contact lenses from PSE, even though I made it clear that I did not have the ability to pay hundreds of dollars out-of-pocket at that given moment for contacts. They promised me that they would e-mail me my prescription so I could try to find contacts elsewhere. They didn't, and honestly, how many times can you call the same place asking for the same thing before you are beaten down and just throw in the towel? So, I caved and decided to buy my contacts from them, and this is where it really goes downhill. First, they mis-quoted me a price over the phone, so I got quite a bit of a shock when I saw the charge on my credit card bill. They did not provide me (as they said they would) with my rebate and receipts when I received my contacts. I had to wait over a week to get this. Third, the receipt that they provided me was incomplete, saying that I had only purchased 4 boxes of contacts when I had in fact purchased 8 (and been charged as such). All these issues slowed down the process of getting the rebate that they (again) promised would help alleviate the cost of the full years supply. I cannot tell you the number of times that I've had to call PSE to try to get these issues resolved, and frankly I'm so tired of it that I will be switching eye care providers when the time comes for another exam. I think at the very foundational level, a doctor's office should be able to fulfill basic patient needs to a satisfactory level without having to be badgered by said patient. I would rather have a smooth overall experience than the bells and whistles. REVISION: Originally my review was only 2 stars based on the above details, but Dr. Bazan immediately e-mailed me and took many steps (above and beyond) to make sure that I was taken care of. Just want to make it known that he truly does care, and if you have a bad experience, he certainly seems like he will do whatever it takes to correct it. Thanks :) read more
