This is my first Yelp review and I am compelled to write one after having visited Park Slope Eye this afternoon. Mary and Dr. Bazan are really great, and even if you don't need glasses I recommend you stop by and say hello . I am a stickler for good service and these folks went above and beyond. They demonstrated a perfect blend of professionalism, warmth, and style. **I should note that this was my first trip to an Optometrist ever. Dr. Bazan could not have been any more patient in explaining the various check up procedures. I was taken aback by his knowledge and professional demeanor. if you are a tech junkie, like myself, you will not be disappointed with his setup. Mary is a Peach! I don't know if I have met someone as friendly as she, and I mean that. She redefines courteous. I was impressed not only with the selection of frames that she offered but by her product knowledge. These people clearly like what they do. I have no interest in going anywhere else other than Park Slope Eye and I recommend them without any reservation. Park Slope Eye! You rule. I was getting some blurriness sitting in front of a computer all day at work so I stopped in for my first eye appointment in over 10 years. The one-two punch of Mary and Dr. Bazan is pretty tough to beat. Dr. Bazan was very relaxed, confident, and had a good sense of humor as I mocked myself during the eye exam. He did a great job of explaining everything that was going on and why he was doing each test, which I appreciated. When he recommended glasses for computer work, he even told me I could pick up a pair at Duane Reade if I really wanted to. Bless you, Justin! Just because you said that, I'll shell out some cash for Park Slope Eye. Mary works up front and helped me pick out some frames after my exam. I had no idea what to look for so she recommended a couple after asking me a few questions, and she nailed it after two tries. She spent a while on the phone with my insurance company sorting everything out and was really patient and kind about it. When I came back a week later to pick up my glasses, she even offered to clean my boyfriend's lenses when he remembered her from when she worked at Cohen's in Union Square. It was a very warm and fuzzy ophthalmological moment. The office is modern and clean - my exam room was a little small but that's generally the case in NYC. While I was having a blast, I did end up being there for a long time as I waited for my pupils to dilate and then for them to... un-dilate. Luckily both Mary and Dr. Bazan live in the area and love to talk about the hood... and Yelp! In conclusion, this was a grand old time. Let me respond to Dr. Bazan. First of all, I invite people to look at another response from Dr. Bazan to a customer when she wanted to use the prescription from an exam she paid for to purchase her contacts somewhere else... So let me get this straight - a customer pays a substantial fee for an exam, and is then is pushed into buying the product at his store. Hmm.... The price quoted in the store for the contact lens exam was $240. Dr. Bazan himself was there, and he did not offer to knock anything off the price of the exam - e.g. give me the Yelp deal, which I did not have. I did not write that it was wrong to charge me $50. I just think it was bad business, especially because I have been a repeat customer, and spent about $1000 on two pairs of glasses, one pair of updated eyeglass lenses and a years' worth of contacts at Park Slope Eye. Also, one problem of never talking to a human being and getting a lot of emails from a business is that sometimes things get missed. My bad. I knew I would pay an exam fee, but was shocked at how high it was because I have never seen it before. If Dr. Bazan himself would have tried to work it out with me, he may have actually cemented me as a loyal customer. Instead he got someone who likes to write Yelp reviews. I am completely ecstatic. After having horrible experiences with my eye doctor prior to coming to Park Slope Eye (don't worry yelp-they're going to get theirs), I read some of the reviews on here and decided it was worth a shot. I was able to book an appointment online for the next day, found the online process to be pretty awesome, and received prompt email responses to any insurance questions I had. Dr. Lee was f*cking awesome. I don't know if I could have had a better experience if one of my own friends was doing the eye exam. She laughed at my corny jokes, did a more thorough exam than my old eye doctor, and I was in and out in just a little over a half hour with hardly any wait time. Didn't have to fill out any paperwork, was fitted with better contacts than I had before, and if I wanted to, could've chowed down on an array of snacks in the process. My biggest fear with coming to eye doctors, despite the fact that I hate going to any doctor in general (and typically have an allergic reaction to most-literally), is that stupid huge puff of air they blow into your eye. Apparently this process was unnecessary because Dr. Lee did the same test with some *magic tool* that I couldn't even feel. Here I am about to go into a panic attack over some air, and the whole eye pressure air puff deal was over in 0.5 seconds. Incredibly friendly and knowledgeable staff with a hip/contemporary selection of frames. I needed contacts and Dr. Bazan and the receptionist on duty went out of their way to make my visit a good and memorable one. Additionally the place is clean and the eye equipment is new (and technologically superior to anything I'd seen). I don't normally think of going to the eye doctor as fun, but I always look forward to my trips here. read more

I want to go on the record as saying I'd write up my experience at Park Slope Eye, and write it this glowingly, even if I didn't know that Dr. Bazan was an avid Yelper (or, indeed, if Yelp hadn't been how I found his shop in the first place). But since I know all of that, I felt like I had to come straight home from my excellent, painless appointment and say so right away. Believe the Yelp hype - there's a very good reason this place gets consistent five-star ratings. Everybody at this place is friendly, cheerful, and super-competent. I generally hate going to the eye doctor, and in fact had been avoiding it for far too long, but all the trepidation went away as soon as I walked in. I was given snacks (!) and reclined on a comfy couch while the front-desk staff checked up on my insurance. (I was almost disappointed when Dr. Bazan was ready to see me within a couple of minutes - I could have hung out awhile longer!) Dr. Bazan himself put me at ease right away. He was thorough and careful, and when I mentioned I wanted to try contacts, he took all the fear out of the process for me - I'd never had them before and now I think I might actually wear them all the time. After his patient lesson in lens removal and application, all of the weirdness of sticking my finger in my eye is gone. I have not been to Park Slope Eye as a customer yet and I live some distance away. But I went there for a social media event organized by Sidewalk Collective over a month ago. Yes, this review is that late but I finally just signed up with Yelp. And this place is that amazing. They have earned every 5 star review they have been given on Yelp. I don't think I can add anything new to what others have already said on here, but I will ask this much... once you have gone into Dr. Bazan's joint why would you ever want to visit another optometrist? His staff is just as wonderful This is how every small business should be run and the sort of business (not in the vision correction industry) that I would one day like to own. read more

I was happy to make my second trip back to Park Slope Eye. My first visit was perfect. Professional staff, excellent customer service, free coffee, good music, a forward-thinking embrace of technology and a super friendly and competent doctor. All of that was the same this time except the doctor. I arrived on time and waited 25 minutes listening to the doctor (whom I'd never seen) berating a member of his staff. I don't know who this guy thinks he is, but he has clearly turned what was once great into a toxic environment. I felt sincerely sorry for his staff. So knowing he would have done the same, I demanded to know what was taking so long. He apologized for my wait, but I admitted it wasn't the time that bothered me, but him. He admitted that his "style" was not for everyone. Being a jerk is not a style in my book. I said that I didn't want to see anyone that would treat their co-workers like he had. So, as not to throw the baby out with the bathwater, I rescheduled with the other doctor (Dr. Lee) and left. I still think this place is great but I was really turned off by my experience today. read more

Dr. Bazan is the man and the rest of the staff is great, too. I was sipping on peppermint tea and deciding what to snack on before my appointment. I needed an eye exam/contacts before I headed out on tour for several months. Bazan made me feel extremely comfortable, and was laid back and professional. He gave me a couple pairs of monthly contacts as well as dailies to try out on the road. The most pleasant eye exam I've ever had, by far. read more

All up to date equipment, super friendly staff, and great amenities. The doctor was friendly, funny, and attentive. We reviewed all the data from the test that I took, and I felt like for the first time in my many years of going to the eye doctor, that I learned something new about my (poor) vision. There are no musty stacks of lens here. No old projector with stacks of letter to read. As far as picking out frames, I had a very helpful woman go through all the options with me. Not pushy at ALL, she helped me find the perfect frames for my face. On top of that, she helped me figure out the best price (between using my groupon deal and my insurance). Park Slope eye has free coffee (you can even take the mug home) , snacks and they have a computer for your use so you could write your novel there if you'd like. Although I am sure they'd kick you out if you weren't really a patient. But seriously, its the coolest place to hang out. Not like normal sterile boring doctors offices! My girlfriend was attacked by our new kitten the other day. After a few days of agony she finally made it to Park Slope Eye. We walked in, without an appointment and were seen within 15 minutes (or two cups of coffee). Turns out her eye got scratched pretty badly, but she'll live. In the meantime, I am her seeing eye boyfriend and look forward to accompanying her on her follow-up visit next week. And FYI, if anyone has appointment coming up and would need some company. Got a cute pair of glasses for $99, and the staff was super friendly and helpful. Later, I emailed to ask for copies of my receipts so I could send in my contacts rebate, and they replied right away: "You got it! See attached! Dr Bazan is great, but the follow up service and communication with ordering and the front desk need to be improved. I found it difficult to get in touch with the front desk- It has to always be done by email, as no one really answers the phone, even during office hours. I asked for a copy of the prescription and it took no less than 4 emails to get them to send that to me. They also need to be better at the follow through of prescription handling and fulfillment. read more

I had an emergency (dislocation of my lens implant) from a surgery I'd had years earlier in California when I met Dr. Cohen and the front staff at Park Slope Eye. They were great. The staff was helpful and low key, for the most part. One of the ladies was a bit persistent with helping my friend find frames when he's the type to look himself. But, it came off as a mix of true exuberance and understandable boredom (it was a Sunday ;). Both the ladies up front were extremely nice and friendly. They offered my buddy a drink and talked about life the whole time I was in session. Dr. Cohen was exactly as I'd choose him to be. Smart, personable, relatable (not at all narcissistic), knowledgable and swift yet thorough. He spotted the issue quickly, called in for a second opinion and I was out of there with some very crucial information in no time. He could've charged me an arm and a leg. I would've paid it. It was an emergency and it was on Sunday. He charged me a completely reasonable fee. Great guy. Great place. I'm grateful. read more

I made a 8:30am appointment on a Friday with Dr. Lee and had a great check-in experience. I also loved that I didn't get the dreaded puff test, and seeing the 3D imaging of my eyes was neat. But to be honest, it took about four days to get an email of my prescription, and I was annoyed, since I had plans to get new glasses (elsewhere) on Saturday, but now couldn't. They were also closed over the weekend, so I had to wait until Monday to chase for it. The doc also said I needed bifocals, which I found to be quite strange. I've never had issues reading up close and she said it's a likely cause of my headaches that I get at work. I wasn't entirely convinced and ended up going to another doctor that wasn't affiliated with a "store" and was told something entirely different. It's hard to trust an opinion when it feels like they are trying to get you to buy new (expensive) lenses. I will not be back. read more

I tracked down the ever-enthusiastic and smart Dr. Bazan from a previous store and was glad I did. He continues to be very helpful and willing to take time to explain things. This is a plus given that many doctors are over-booked, and unfortunately rushing through their appointments. There are other doctors at this location I believe. I saw the doctor for an eye exam and prescription for glasses and contact lenses. My contact lenses generally cost a lot given the severity of my astigmatism and other variables; eyeglass lenses also cost a heap of bills due to all the hyperindexing and other aspects of the prescription. Park Slope Eye accepted and processed my eye insurance and that was a relief. Because of my insurance, I saved under two hundred dollars on a year's supply of the lenses (after getting a free trial pair too); they wound up cheaper than I could find online, so that was a good reason to support a local business. My glasses were expensive, and that is a result of how blind I am naturally and the frames I chose. I'm very picky and not generally wearing the cheapest frames or anything trendy. The optician who dealt with me was understanding of my "different" tastes and didn't try to talk me into styles I was not interested in. She immediately understood my preferred aesthetics and was able to find frames in the store that I had not initially noticed, and was able to find a better proportion of a version of the frame I eventually chose. The glasses frame was hard to find for sale online, but were comparably priced. While they were expensive from an idealistic perspective, as a designer, I can understand how the marketplace establishes prices for high quality, despite my lack of desire to pay a full amount. ;-) I'm cheap, but I won't get cheap with my eyes. As another reviewer wrote, Park Slope Eye does not sell cheap-looking chain store frames. The store is very marketing and technology savvy, unlike the eye place next to Ozzies on Seventh Ave. that staples patient's file folders together on lamposts and writes messages like "20% of exams" in ballpoint pen on them. Before having seen that tacky mess (and lack of patient confidentiality because the patients' names are still on the folders [go look on a Saturday morning]), I found the staff at "that place" to be rude. Another reviewer mentioned difficulty in getting Park Slope Eye on the phone; I called three times and got someone twice, so that is not bad. They also communicate via email and cell phone text messages. Very chic! Overall, communication was good. The (optician) on staff has her "office" set up on the selling floor, so while she looks available, sitting at a laptop, she may actually be working on someone else's business. That was confusing at first, since you see her spot before you get to the counter. I did return a few times and found her working with and engaging a little girl; that seems like an essential versatility given the many kids in the hood. Thanks for hooking me up. read more

I've never actually taken the time to write a review of a business before, but since Park Slope Eye IS so fantastic, here it goes : Park Slope Eye is truly a special place. I've been purchasing contact lenses and receiving eye exams from Dr. Bazan for a couple of years now and can't imagine going elsewhere. I visited the office this past week to have my eyes checked by the doctor after noticing a change in my pupils. As soon as I arrived, I was greeted by the friendly staff as always, given a delicious beverage to sip on (Six Point Sweet Action - amazing!!) and an iPad to play with while waiting for the doctor in the comfy lounge-like area by the front window. (Parents will appreciate the toys and impressive spread of snacks to tide over the little ones, as well as the buzzer at the outside entrance to beckon extra stroller help.) It's clear that the team has considered every aspect of the patient experience, and the attention to detail is incredible. I'm not sure who in the office plays DJ, but the music is always great, the space is decorated with work by local artists, and I'm bound to discover a cool new fashion/lifestyle magazine on the coffee table. Since I'm investigating LASIK, I'm not in the market for a new pair of glasses, but I'm always tempted when I visit. The selection of frames are well-edited and stylish, with something seemingly for every taste and face. Most importantly - I know that the care I'm receiving here is tops. Dr. Bazan is very thorough, generous with his time, always eager to answer questions and willing to dig deeper to research solutions. I appreciate that he walks me through the "x-rays" of my eyes, I feel like I get a mini optometry lesson every time. I was especially impressed during my last visit wherein I had a symptom of a potentially serious issue; Dr. Bazan addressed the matter with concern while putting me at ease - I wish that all my doctors had his fantastic bedside manner! He continued to offer information and realistic advice on how to better take care of my eyes and reduce strain, without any hint of frowning disapproval on my present not-so-great habits. The icing on the cake is how easy the team at PSE makes it to schedule appointments, order/receive contacts, etc... The office is open early/late a few days a week, booking via Facebook was super easy (and convenient for those of us who have a hard time breaking away from work to make phone calls during the day), and the staff always replies to my emails quickly. There have been a few occasions when I needed help with VSP and FLEX spending, and they bent over backwards to make things easier for me. Unless you happen to enjoy being ripped off/under-serviced at other "boutique" optometry shops, or treated like a number at a bland chain - there is no reason NOT to entrust your precious peepers to Dr. Bazan and the team at Park Slope Eye. read more

Ok, so after my first experience at Park Slope Eye which I found both technologically stimulating and vapid, I went back for my follow up. Now, truth be told, I have a feeling my review was read before my return, but it was never mentioned. Anyhow, follow up was GREAT. Very thorough. More thorough, in fact, than any other doctor experience Optometrist or otherwise to date. I remembered a problem I occasionally have with one eye which was followed by an even more thorough inspection. Having my eyeball picture emailed to me as I'm still in the waiting room perusing frames was amusing, of course. The free box of nerds which I only recently finished was a big selling point. But really, it's by far the best optometry experience of my life (and I've had glasses/contacts since I was 14). So, I'll definitely be back! I just hope my outfit next time is 1/3 as stylish as my doctor's. read more

I chose Park Slope Eye seeking a top quality service that I can trust, and that's exactly what I found. The waiting area seemed to be designed carefully for customer comfort, with complementary beverages and comfortable seating... these little details told me I was in the right place from the moment I stepped in. Dr. Bazan was very quick, informative, and friendly. I can tell that he genuinely cares about the health of his patients, he's not just running through the motions like many other optometrists I've visited. Aaron and Yasmin in the reception area both very kindly answered all the questions I had for them. Yasmin even spent extra time helping me choose some glasses that looked close to the ones I previously owned. Both of them were very quick to respond to emails before and after my appointment, and Aaron pointed me to some current discounts I could take advantage of. In addition, the equipment at Park Slope Eye seems to be very up to date, modern technology. I never expected this to be the cheapest option, but honestly I don't want to cut corners on the health of my eyes. I loved the helpfulness of the staff when I bought a pair of glasses here a few years back. I recently booked a contacts exam and had an even better experience. They give you an iPad to browse while you wait (which wasn't necessary, given that I was seen right away), the staff is extremely friendly + helpful and the optometrist was very knowledgeable + thorough. Dr. Bazan is the best. Hands Down. Super informative and super professional. I can't say enough great things about the store and what they are doing for the Slope! I've even walked by at night and there was an art showing going on. I popped in and was given some wine and got to enjoyed some unexpected culture. The no phone thing was new to me, but they were quick with email and it actually worked out better because there was no phone tag! They are costumer oriented and will work with you to get it right. I had to try a couple different pairs/brands of contacts over the span of a couple weeks. By the end, I was seeing perfectly and my eyes felt better than ever... Stop in and check it out for yourself. Park Slope Eye is fantastic and I highly recommend! btw, The reason I am posting is that I just read some of the bad reviews... The best experience and I wasn't even the patient. I took my daughter (10 yrs old) here to get an eye exam. I wasn't expecting anything other than a rush job, like I usually experience at other places, fortunately for us that was far from the case. Not relevant but it smells good as soon as you walk in and it looks very artsy. The guy who greeted us was very nice offered us something to drink and a snack. We got some hot chocolate (they had about 5 different kinds she was in heaven). We were called in before she even finished it. Before I get to that he informed me that they don't accept my insurance and when I was hesitant he told me I could get a Groupon which I did. So now we are heading into the exam room which I have to say is pretty small. She gave my daughter the most thorough exam I have ever seen. We were in there for maybe 30 minutes, maybe a little longer. She made sure she was comfortable and asked her about school, if she had any trouble last year if she had any concerns about her eyes etc. Then she proceeded with about 4 different procedures before she used the machines. It wasn't tedious or drawn out I could see the point of each thing she did. She was very patient even as my daughter over explained everything lol. She even showed her the pictures of her eye and explained what she was looking for and how she knew her eyes were healthy. I really felt like my daughter was walking out with exactly what she needs. Unlike with the other optometrist I went to on 5th Ave who I will not name. Can't wait to get her new glasses. They have a pretty good selection for kids and adults. I've been to Park Slope Eye twice now. I cannot recommend it highly enough. The staff is courteous, helpful, patient. Doctor Bazan was engaging, energetic, and legitimately informative - I went in for contacts and came away with newfound knowledge about my eyes. The whole process was efficient and painless, with options for advanced scans and modern techniques. I daresay I almost had fun. At a medical appointment. My two year long search for new prescription eyeglasses in NYC to replace the same pair I've been wearing since senior year of college (2002...Egads!) finally came to an end this month. Who knew that a search that took me to all corners far and wide in New York City (well, technically downtown Manhattan and Williamsburg) would eventually lead me to a terrific shop just steps from my apartment in Park Slope. Park Slope Eye provides a comfortable browsing and shopping experience in a bright, contemporary, and spacious floor with a dedicated, knowledgeable, and politely helpful (but most importantly, not pushy) staff from the receptionist to Dr. Bazan who will patiently guide you to the perfect frame from their large selection of well curated styles ranging from popular brands to the esoteric. I personally ended up selecting a nice frame from the Jono Hennessy line, a brand which was brought to my attention only at this shop. Dr. Bazan is an engaging and relaxing optometrist who I felt comfortable being honest with when explaining what I was looking for. Their glasses are slightly on the more pricey end of the scale, however they will work with you on the cost and for the service before and after, the prices in my opinion, are worth it. While the product offering, glasses in this case, should be the focus of any shop, Park Slope Eye always has a refreshment area of snacks, coffee and tea to make your browsing just a little more comfortable. Citizens of NYC (and even Long Island), lastly, this shop is conveniently located one subway stop or a brisk 8 minute walk from the massive (that's what she said) Atlantic-Pacific subway terminal, which nearly every major subway line runs through, so you have no excuse to check out Park Slope Eye in your search for stylist 20/20 vision. read more

I had been a client with Dr. Bazan and most recently Dr. Lee over good number of years. Their professionalism has always been spot on, the selection of frames while although not expansive, was modern and always had a several choices that worked well. Overall customer service had been generally quite good, even though they had occasionally taken somewhat long periods to delivery a new pair of glasses. Recently, a new eye scanning diagnostic had been implemented in the office and had been offered as a alternative to dilatation. It said that most insurance did not cover the new diagnostic tool unless there specific conditions being addressed. During the exam Dr. Lee looking at certain parameters of my eye exam and history informed me that I would qualify for regular insurance coverage. Even though I had accepted the cost prior, I had a change in expectation considering the information provided. This also combined with my normal vision examinations are fully covered with discounts towards new glasses bi-annually. What seemed to happened afterwards was a combination of misunderstanding and communications. I had no expectations of bill payments and therefore no expectations of further billing. At a later point, I received notice of an attempt to collect on bill from Park Slope Eye. Being honest, conditions that were out of the control of either Park Slope Eye or myself exasperated this issue. After attempting to gain some clarity on the situation, I find a couple of issues with this whole recent experience that I couldn't accept. The finer details aren't really necessary to expand upon here as it serves no purpose, but there are some notable issues after reviewing the documents. I felt their a somewhat blase response to my issues when they had been brought up. This honestly being something that I feel was easily an amenable issue to keep the general business relationship ongoing. In ending, this will end up terminating a fairly long relationship with their business. Its unfortunate as I really don't have an issue with any other aspect, but don't principally agree on few items I don't wish to overlook. Which explains the rating. They do operate a good business in general, but customer service in this instance doesn't meet the expectations I have, thus a reduction in the rating I provide. read more

SHORT STORY I received an emailed bill from PSE a full 17 months after receiving medical services. When I asked a question about insurance processing of the bill, I was not answered but was instead referred to a collections agency. The office would not return calls or messages, and was closed during posted business hours when I attempted to resolve issue in person. I emailed the owner, Justin Bazan, directly with concerns, and received curt and dismissive answers. LONGER STORY I don't usually leave reviews but felt enough shadiness and disrespect here to warrant a warning for other customers/patients. Long story but here's what happened, if you're interested: I received vision therapy from Dr. Rima Bakhru in early 2018, which I was totally pleased with. At the end of each session, I settled my account with the front desk and was led to believe I had no remaining balance. (Unfortunately, Dr. Bakhru no longer works at PSE so I cannot recommend that service. It appears she was unceremoniously fired via text message which you can read about in her Yelp review of Park Slope Eye [username: Rima B.]). 17 months after completing vision therapy, I was emailed a bill for an outstanding balance. In those 17 months I did not receive any other mailed or emailed bills. I asked their billing representative for clarification on the unusual bill, and I was told it was still being processed by insurance. I requested to be notified when insurance processing was complete, but never received a notification. The next bill I received was from a collections agency for an amount greater than the original emailed bill, without itemization or explanation of the increase. PSE's billing rep was unable to answer questions about the collection agency referral, because she is an independent contractor and the office handles referrals to collection agencies directly. Since the billing rep couldn't answer questions about why I was referred for collections, I reached out to PSE directly. Despite having a receptionist, the office has no direct phone line so it is not possible to call and speak with a human being, which has made this whole process much more frustrating and tedious. Their answering machine states they will return calls within 24 hours, but I left multiple voicemails and was never called back. I attempted to visit the office in person to discuss the issue, but found the office closed and locked during post business hours (1:15pm on a Wednesday). Finally, I emailed Dr. Bazan directly to explain the situation and my frustration with their customer service, and for being pursued by a collections agency rather than being responded to by their billing department. His response: "The customer service is not relevant to taking care of the money owed." Referring customers to collections agencies rather than attempting to address their billing questions strikes me as an unnecessarily antagonistic business practice. It seems that Dr. Bazan & Park Slope Eye don't consider the billing process part of the customer service experience at all, which might begin to explain all the negative customer experiences and reviews. read more

I went to Park Slope Eye on the basis of their Yelp reviews. The optometrist (Dr. Katelyn Rogerson) is fantastic, and the staff (at this point given the difficulties I've experienced and the amount of times that I've had to go back, I've met 4 so far) are all extremely friendly and exceptionally courteous. HOWEVER, I also experienced several issues post-exam when trying to pick up my contact lenses. Initially they were to be available within a few days; after waiting for a week with no word, I followed up by calling several times - after leaving messages with no response and finally getting through, it turns out they had failed to place the order for my contacts in the first place (despite having charged my credit card for them a week prior). I was told the new order would be available within 3 days, and assured that somebody would call me as soon as the contacts arrived. Another week passed, and I had to follow up to find out whether or not the contacts had arrived. Once I went there to pick up the contacts and invoices required for the rebate (this now being over two weeks past the initial exam and order), I waited almost an hour to get the receipts (required for the rebate) printed out. At this point I am still not confident that I have the correct invoices in order to get the rebate processed; hopefully they gave me the right invoices so that I will not have to return. Given the amount of hassle required to simply receive the product that I paid for, I would be quite hesitant to recommend PSE. I wouldn't hesitate to go back for an eye exam, however if you're looking to order contacts I highly recommend ordering online or from another store. read more

Recently went back in for my check-up and told Dr. B that my contacts had been irritating me some lately. He checked things out and then suggested trying a few different types of lenses. He gave me trials of 2 different types, told me to try them out over the next few weeks and then give him a call when I decided which one I preferred. To me, that's customer service and a doctor who cares. I'm happy to say that the lenses I'm now using have been much more comfortable. As usual, the crew working in there are great -- accommodating, friendly and inviting. read more

I lost my glasses and needed a new pair fast. Dr. Bazan did the interview on a Tuesday afternoon and promised me my new glasses by Thursday. When they weren't ready, he said he'd have them delivered to me at work the next day, called for a car to take me home (it was dark, raining, and I'd biked there), and then we waited in the office together drinking some really good stout till the driver called from the street. The next day Jasmine dropped them off to me, as promised. Great service, good beer, and a really nice pair of eyeglasses: I'd go back again anytime. P.S. (I didn't actually take the car ride home because I couldn't find the car on the street--It was dark, raining, and I've got lousy vision without glasses--but that's not Dr. Bazan's fault, and I biked home without mishap, so all's well that ends well.) read more

4 years later and I'm still a happy customer. Yasmin even had the patience to help me through picking out a pair of glasses. Poor girl. I hate shopping, am indecisive, and think I look terrible in glasses. Not only do they fit and function great, I even get compliments when I wear them out! This is after never wearing glasses except from the bed to the bathroom. They weren't cheap, but they've delayed me considering Lasik, so I consider it a win. Dr. Bazan continues to have excellent bedside manner, obviously loves his job and shop and keeping up to date on tech. Appointments are quick, to the point, and still very friendly, even enjoyable. Two minor quibbles. I think they're outgrowing their shop, so it's a little cramped in there now. Good problem to have, I guess :-) And they do all communication via email. Response times are always very quick, more than acceptable, but sometimes I'm tired of typing and would rather just sort an issue out over the phone. It's never caused a practical issue for me, I'm just being a grumpy old man :-D The shop remains highly recommended and I've never given a second thought to going there in my 4 years of patronage. read more

Thank you, Yelp! Thank you, Dr. Bazan! You both have done me a great service. I got something in my left eye when I was commuting home from work on Friday (on the subway). I could not seem to blink it out or otherwise get whatever it was out of my eye since I was stuck on the train. When I got home, I examined and flushed my eye. It looked like I got whatever was in there out. On Saturday, though, I had all the symptoms of a scratched cornea and figured I had scratched my cornea trying to get whatever was in my eye out of it. After talking with an ER doctor, I took her advice and hoped that by Sunday things would have improved, if only very slightly. On Sunday morning, I realized that I really did need someone to examine my eye asap. I checked some Yelp reviews with the hopes of finding a good eye doctor in Park Slope. Dr. Bazan got rave reviews. I called and left him a message at 7:45 am on a Sunday. He had called me back to scheduled an appointment before 9:30 am and said I could come in at 10:15 am. OK, wait a minute, I can see a great eye doctor at 10:15 am on a Sunday? In Park Slope? Really? THANK YOU. Turns out that I did have an eyelash stuck well under my eyeball. The symptoms of the scratched cornea were due to an allergic reaction caused by the eye lash lodged under my eye. I think it took less than 20 minutes to get everything fixed up and for Dr. Bazan to show me a short video clip of the eyelash and its removal (I asked him to do so, and yes, it was cool, and yes, it was a little gross). After all the emergency medical stuff was settled, Dr. Bazan found a great pair of sunglasses frames I loved. He and his receptionist, Ana, took a picture of me wearing the frames and emailed it to me for future reference (should I come up with $425 for gorgeous sunglasses in the near future). Dr. Bazan, Ana and I chatted about eye health related topics, some weird eye doctor experiences I've had in NY (see my review of Penn Optical for a taste of that conversation), and some more fun stuff for a little while before I left. OK, bottom line: I could not be happier with Dr. Bazan and his staff. I am astonished and delighted that I was able to get an immediate appointment in a comfortable, state of the art office instead of having to go to the Emergency Room. Out of pocket this urgent care visit was about $80 without insurance coverage (they are still trying to set up a relationship with GHI, my health insurance plan). I am thrilled both with the quality of care I received and the cost. I will look forward to seeing Dr. Bazan, again, hopefully for routine visits from now on. read more

I got a new prescription and replacement lenses for my glasses from Park Slope Eye several months back. Because Park Slope Eye does not have its own lab, they wanted me to leave my frames so they could send them out to have the lenses made. These are my only pair of glasses so I would be without glasses for up to a week, which was not an option. I asked if he could fit me with a single pair of trial contacts to tide me over and he said only if I paid for a full contact lens fitting on top of the glasses exam. This would be a prohibitively expensive option as I did not want to get contacts. I asked if it would be possible for them to coordinate with the lab who would be making my lenses so that I could drop off my glasses right before they were scheduled to make my lenses, so that I would be without them for a couple of hours instead of several days. They said yes. This required me to come back on a second occasion to hand off the frames to begin this choreographed process, but I agreed. I arrived a few minutes early and the door was locked. I waited for 15-20 minutes, calling periodically but they pride themselves on not answering the phone. I left one voicemail and I finally went to a nearby coffee shop to try to get some work done. Every now and then I called again and always got voicemail. Because there was literally no way to find out if anyone was in the office without going back and forth, and because every failed attempt meant I'd be wasting time I owed my employer, I waited 45 minutes or so and went back and found an employee had since arrived. No apology for not being there when he was supposed to be. He said the lab was several blocks away so he would walk them over there. Since I had already lost over an hour and I had my bike I offered to bring them over myself to save time, so he gave me the address and I went on my way. When I got to the other place, which turned out to be another optometrist further South, they expressed dismay that Park Slope Eye did not tell them my glasses were rimless, which substantially lengthens the required time as they epoxy the frame to the lenses and there is no way to reduce the curing time. They also were surprised that Park Slope Eye had not done the necessary measurements and markings on my existing lenses so they would know precisely where to center the new lenses. But they were very nice about it, took the measurements themselves, and said they would do their best at getting the glasses done quickly, given the limitations of the epoxy cure time. They were not ready by the time I had to get home to meet my son's school bus. They graciously offered to bring the glasses to my house that evening but my wife was nearby and was able to pick them up later. So to sum up: 1. Park Slope Eye neglected to have an employee open the store in time for my appointment, and they did not apologize for this mistake 2. There was no way to contact them to find out if someone was arriving imminently or if they had just forgotten and were simply closed for the day 3. The process that they intended to follow (have someone walk my glasses to the lab) would not have worked, since the lab would not be able to grind the lenses without knowing where my eyes lined up, and could not possibly be done in the time allotted since they did not tell the lab these were rimless glasses 4. I lost much of a day of work, and had to do what was left (and bike home) without my glasses Park Slope Eye's prices were *far* too steep to justify the disorganized customer service I received, so I cannot recommend them. My wife has her own feelings about Park Slope Eye, but you should read her reviews (reviewer "Pamela P.") and Dr. Bazan's responses yourself, as Yelp review guidelines prohibit me from discussing others' experiences. Based solely on my interactions with Park Slope Eye, I would never do business with them again. read more

Dr. Bazan, was great. He was honest, and also provided some advice to a long time contact wearer. He gave me options, and also allowed me the opportunity to try out a new type of contact. I stuck with my original brand, but I appreciate the early adaptor nature of the office. I did have a little snafu with the delivery of my contacts, beyond late. But all in all I am pleased with the office. I do wish I had more options in regards to frames. read more

This guy. Wow. Not only does he try to upsell you on Biotrue/Bausch & Lomb products because he gets big time "consulting" fees (over $300,000 from these kickbacks alone, based on reporting under the Sunshine Act), and tricks you and coerces you into uncovered services so he can charge you OOP, but for a YEAR I've had the wrong prescription because he screwed up. I've had headaches every single day FOR A YEAR after he gave me a new prescription, and I finally went to an ophthalmologist. She said it was the prescription that was wrong and to go back and have him recheck me for free to correct the mistake. I explained the situation to him and asked him to recheck and wants me to pay $150 for him to correct HIS mistake. This guy is crooked, greedy, and can't even measure a prescription correctly. I've been wearing glasses since I was a kid so I've had several optometrists over the years. This one ranks at the bottom of the list. The employees are snobby and unfriendly. Also, I found their selection of frames to be lacking. They only carry independent (read: unknown) brands but the prices are comparable to high end designers. When I politely asked why the prices are so high for unknown brands, I got the most condescending reply. I was told that it's the same difference between shopping at Brooklyn Industries vs. Diesel or G-Star. She then went on to say that some people "need" to wear labels and some people just like well-made things. It came across as an underhanded insult. The biggest deal breaker is the fact that they are not readily available to their customers. They cannot be reached by phone. It is impossible to simply call and speak with someone because all calls go straight to a voicemail that instructs you to email them or leave a message and they will call you back. I find this incredibly lazy and unprofessional. Especially since they are horrible at returning calls, they do not respond to fax and they take their sweet time responding to emails. Bottom line: If you have other options when it comes to Optometrists, explore them. Do not choose this place unless you have no choice. read more
