Ever since we moved to this part of Brooklyn, me and my nine-year-old canine companion Eko have been coming to Dr. Szacki. I have to thank our fellow Yelpers for helping us to find her and her office, because we've been really pleased so far. Why? - It's a 5-minute walk from our place. - It's usually very easy to get an appointment. - We're usually seen quickly. - Dr. Szacki and her assistants genuinely love animals, and it shows in their care. - We're always given good advice. - We're sent on our way without any unnecessary add-ons. - They've been happy to clip my dog's nails upon request (not a feat for the faint of heart; the dog is a complete pushover when happy, but he can be 85 pounds of pure stubborn if he decides to be). - Eko usually gets spoiled with treats. I also really enjoy the fact that they always seem to be fostering the cutest little kittens behind the desk, though I always have to ensure that my dog doesn't spot them (I see adorableness, he sees dinner). I've been going to Park Slope Vet for about 3 years now. Dr. Szacki is my favorite vet ever. Dr. Hildenbrand is also very good! Dr. Szacki is easily reachable, she calls to check up if one of my cats is sick, and she's extremely thorough. The staff is very efficient and nice - especially Ann & Amber. Dr. Szacki is by far the most professional, experienced, compassionate, and loving vet I have ever had the pleasure of working with. I lived in the same building where the office was located and decided to switch to Dr. Szacki because of our first visit. That was roughly 5 years ago and I would never change a thing. Her and the staff here are absolutely amazing. My senior Siberian Husky had several health issues from skin infections, tumors, arthritis, and thyroid complications among other things. When other vets said my dog only had a short period of time due to his health problems, I went to see Dr. Szacki for a second opinion and she not only eased my level of concern, but extended my dog's life another 5 years. From diet changes, surgeries, proper medication, and after care treatment, Dr. Szacki showed true expertise in her field. Just recently, Monday June 13th, 2016, my baby boy had to be put to rest due to health complications. Dr. Szacki and her staff was attentive, caring, comforting, and beyond professional. She walked me through the full procedure and ensured a peaceful journey. She even cried with me. As difficult as it was, I would have never gotten through it if it wasn't for her. My cat recently fractured one of the bones in his hind leg and I brought him in for re-evaluation. While I had no issues with the vet and was seen on-time, the office environment is not conducive to the needs of a cat. A woman came in with her dog and her two very young children (a baby and a toddler). The dog was well -behaved but her children were very loud given that they were so young. Because there was very little separation between the waiting room and the evaluation room, their crying could be heard through the walls. This stressed my already nervous cat even more. To the point that he was shaking on the examination table. Since he was being evaluated for a fractured leg, I had to take extra care to make sure he didn't try to bolt off the table. read more

I am so pleased to have found this vet hospital. I've been rescuing animals for 20 years, and I've worked in 3 different hospitals. This place exceeds my knowledge and experience by far. Here's how I rate ANY animal hospital: -cleanliness -knowledge -kindness -patience with "crazy or annoying" owners -handling of the animal -information and education for the client These folks got a check for each and every one of these items. I like to think of myself as a knowledgeable pet owner. Dr. Szacki taught me a new way to brush my cats teeth and a better way to feed him. Ok doc! I'm on it. Her tech is an absolute force of gentle-ness. She held my cat (who in the past could not be held by 3 people) and he gave no resistance. I'm impressed! And the receptionist was kind and thorough. So, don't listen to the bag lady that hangs out on the corner. These people are great. Everyone I interacted with from the receptionist to the vet was very nice and very knowledgable. I brought my newly adopted french bulldog in for a wellness visit, to update 3 vaccines, and to check his leg that was bothering him and was very happy with the service. It ran me around $180 and in my opinion was worth every penny. The receptionist was very friendly. The vet techs were great with my dog and almost as nice to me as they were to him, but he's cuter than I. And the vet was wonderful. My dog clearly did not want to be there and she got right down on the floor with him and made him feel as comfortable as possible while she checked him out. I am going back for all my vet needs. And I did an hour later! When my dog ate some grapes, which are toxic to some dogs, if you didn't know (it seems to be random which ones, not breed specific). So not knowing if my dog is a dog that is susceptible to grape induced renal failure, they took him right back in and got him to throw up the grapes and did some poison control treatments. The vet tech even helped me count the grapes in his vomit outside the office on the street. If that isn't service I don't know what is. After they did everything they gave me the information for a 24 hour emergency vet and the ASPCA poison control hotline just in case. Dr. Szacki is great. Although she is young, she has a lot of experience. She really has a way with animals. When she gave my puppy her shots, my puppy didn't mind. At one point, she even fell asleep. Dr. Szacki answered all of our questions (and there were many of them since we're first time dog owners). Prices are reasonable. My parents took their cat to Dr. Hildenbrand, who was also great. I came about 45 minutes late and they still took me, which was very considerate of them (getting two cats into one cage is not easy). The vet looked young but was extremely knowledgeable and took the time to answer every single one of my 1000 questions. I really appreciated that. It's clear that the whole staff really loves animals. Also, and this is really important to me, I didn't feel like I was being ripped off. Where do I begin? I brought a rescue cat (feral) in back in October and although this kitty has her moments, Dr Szacki was very good with her. She had been treated for a few things, had been spayed and received all her shots! The quality of care is top notch and that means a lot coming from me (have been caring for animals since I was 2 yrs old). Having been to many vets and animal clinics over the years, I am really impressed with this place! So much so, that I took my babies here for their exams and shots. I've been coming here for the past year with my pup. It's a clean and friendly place. It's easy to get an appointment and the wait is not too long. My dog has seen both the doctors here and they are both really nice and call you to tell you the results of poop tests, etc. My dog feels really comfortable to come here. They sell heartguard, frontline and will tell you of the latest rebate offers! They work with local shelters, too! Definitely make an appointment because there's a walk-in fee! read more

You will not find more loving animal people at any vet in town. My partner and I have been to see Dr. Szacki many times with our cats and with many cats that we've rescued and she is knowledgable, warm, passionate, and absolutely loves the animals. A very important thing to note is that she does a lot of rescue work, so if you take your pet here, you know some of the money you spend is going back into the community and towards helping animals in Brooklyn that may not have a chance otherwise. There's a million vets in the 3 miles between my place and Park Slope Veterinary Center, but I wouldn't even dream of taking my kitties to anyone other than Dr Szacki. I've had a bad year with kittens. I've lost one to FIP, had another have major and expensive knee surgery, and had a bad scare with the third. Right throughout, Dr Szacki and the rest of the team have been beyond wonderful to us and our cats. After the loss of the first kitten, Dr Szacki was available to see me immediately when I had worries about her brother exhibiting similar symptoms. When my other cat was going into surgery (elsewhere), and afterward during recovery, Dr Szacki took time to call me and check on how things were going. You can tell that she does this out of genuine concern and care for her patients. Everyone here is a serious animal lover, and it shows. read more

Before I say how great this place is I want to mention that they have some adorable cats who need a home. These cats have special needs and were brought in by bad pet parents who wanted to euthanize their cats instead of finding them owners who could provide for the cats needs. Park Slope Vet saved them and very much wanted to find these guys new homes. They even offered us free medicine & health care if we took home of the cats. If I was sure our sick kitty could handle the stress of a new pet in the house I would have taken one of these guts home in a heartbeat. I hope someone will gives these cats a second chance! That being said, I think it's obvious that they really care about animals here. Dr. Szacki was really great to work with. We were sent to this place because our cat needed surgery. Unlike other vets we've been to, she was great about telling us what she would/wouldn't put the animal through if it was her pet. Her incite was really helpful when making our own decisions. Some places we've been to are out of control and recommend expensive procedures whether or not it is in the budget or even in the animals best interest. Dr. Szacki didn't do that at all and seemed to always have the animal's best interest at heart. We brought our sick cat into two other places prior to coming to Park Slope Vet. The first place tried a few things without success and referred us to a specialist. The "specialist" nearly killed our cat. However, within days of leaving Park Slope Vet our cat, although not cured, was obviously feeling much better and back to acting like his normal self! read more

I love this place. My family's vet retired a year ago (Dr. Burns of Brooklyn Veterinary Hospital, a true miracle worker), so when I adopted a cat, I was on the market for someone I could trust with something that I love the most in life. Yelp reviews were awesome for Park Slope Veterinary Center, so I chose them as my cats primary physician, and I've been nothing but pleased. I've only had Dr. Szacki look at my cat, but everyone there was terrific. She was thorough and compassionate with his exam (which came free, since I adopted my cat from Animal Care and Control). What really sealed the deal, was when I called late in the day on a weekend for a minor medical problem (which, reading about on the internet, made me panicked), to ask if I should take him in. I got a callback from Dr. Szacki, after her practice had closed, and she patiently talked me through the matter for 20 minutes. It was a minor issue, but she took it very seriously, and when I took my cat in a few days later, he got a clean bill of health. I endorse this place wholeheartedly- they keep my best friend safe, and they won over my mother (she drives my cat and I there), who will take her pets there. read more

I wrote a bunch of pet posts today and I'm happy to end on a good one! Last year my husband and I adopted a two-year-old domestic short hair. He developed urinary tract disease within a week of taking him home from the shelter, so instead of finding him a (primary care?) vet, we ended up going to VERG. They checked him out and gave us medicine to clear up his infection. Since he had just been neutered and vaccinated when we adopted him, we never actually got around to finding him a regular vet to go to (yes, I realize that makes us seem like terrible cat parents!). Flash forward to a few weeks ago-- he had another urinary tract flare up and since it was an emergency we took him to VERG again. They asked us who his regular vet was and we had to embarrassingly admit that we didn't have one! VERG took care of him again but this time we knew we had to find a vet that we could form a relationship with. Interestingly, I asked VERG for some suggestions but they didn't want to give me any names since they work with many vets-- they didn't want it to seem like they were playing favorites. A bit annoying, but I do respect where they're coming from! Their advice to me was just to do some research on Yelp. After reading a bunch of reviews of PSVC we decided to give Dr. Szacki a try. I was told on the phone that a check-up would run about $52(ish), but we let her do some tests and all together the bill came to about $116. More than we expected for sure, but it was DEFINITELY worth it. We ended up finding out that our cat had a parasite that was irritating his urinary tract condition, and that he had probably had it since we got him from the shelter! Additionally, Dr. S has some sort of Jackson Galaxy magic going, because our normally skittish-with-strangers cat was totally calm with her. He let her give him shots, cut his nails, brush his teeth (!), and anything else you can think of. Actually that's another thing I love about this place-- Dr. S let me videotape her brushing our little guy's teeth so that we can do it at home. My parents have 2 cats and their vet never mentioned brushing their teeth until the day he told them both cats needed treatment for plaque and gum disease and that it would cost $600! So PSVC loses one star for being expensive, but if you can afford it, I couldn't recommend it more highly! read more

I wish I could give a 10 star review! I can say that without a doubt, Park Slope Veterinary Center is THE BEST practice I've ever been to. Though I've only had my first visit, I know I will be bringing my pets here for as long as I can! From the moment I scheduled an appointment, walked through the door, filled out paper work, met with the vet tech, Victoria, met with Dr. Hildenbrand, and paid for my visit, I was treated with respect, a smile, and I NEVER WAS RUSHED (huge gold star for that)!! Dr. Hildenbrand is AWESOME and was so amazing at handling my cat. From her calm and genuine demeanor I sensed that she truly cares and wants the best for my pet. She answered all of the questions I had without making me feel like I was taking up her time. Unlike other veterinary hospitals in the area, PSVC didn't give her vaccinations she already had (yikes)! They made me feel so welcomed, comfortable, and at ease. They were honest, efficient, genuine, knowledgeable, and positive! What more could you ask for a Vet and their staff?! My initial experience was just ok. I didn't really care for the dr. She seemed very judge mental because I bought my pup from a pet store. She like stood there and googled the breeder and I felt like she was scolding me. I didn't say anything. I love my pup and that's all that matters & I haven't seen her again so all is good now. I can't wax lyrical enough about Park Slope Veterinary Center. Whilst the circumstances that brought us to Dr Szacki were really sad (our 12 year old cat was terminally ill) she was a great support both as a vet and as a fellow pet owner. She isn't just great at animal care, but is empathetic, explains things clearly and concisely and offers a fantastic level of service at a very affordable price. I would be flabbergasted if there is a better vet in Brooklyn and would recommend eschewing the bigger names and rediscovering what animal care should be like. We now have a new kitten in our life and didn't hesitate for a second in bringing her to be cared for by Dr Szacki, Rachel and team. In fact, a family member even ended up adopting the now legendary Chadwick who was being put up for adoption by the clinic - more good news. We have been taking our 3 dogs and 2 cats here for about a year. I am always taken back by how rude the receptionists are, how expensive the visits/shots/extras are, and by how little they are willing to communicate with the customer. Today was the straw that broke the camel's back. I won't go into the whole story because nobody really cares about the details. Let me just say this: - The staff is ALWAYS rude and dismissive - One of the "nurses" barely speaks English - They charge astronomical fees - They injected my cat with a vaccine without telling me first and without my consent - Had no idea what was wrong with my cat's ears. Said maybe he's allergic to something. ($60) - They are argumentative - The wait times to see the doc and the wait time to get your bill so you can leave are insane - They do not care if you have a complaint - As much of a pain it is to get a new vet, we are never stepping foot in this practice again. Beware if you are thinking of using this vet for your furry family members! I don't get the sense that they have a real world knowledge since they have not been able to diagnose our dog or (now) cat's rear problems. They say just keep them clean and put Neosporin in any wounds. Duh... All they are good at is doing every possible vaccination and charging you as much as they can for them. Good luck!! read more

We took our scared, senior, muzzled dog to PSVC last night and they treated her kindly and took their time with her to make sure they addressed all of our concerns. They may have a nice staff but why even MAKE APPOINTMENTS if you can't hold to them? They saw my cat an HOUR late and i didn't like the way the vet was digging around in his ear. I've been told by previous vets never to use qtips, even "just on the outside" like she told me she was. One qtip for a sample, sure, but trying to clean his ear with 3-4 qtips and NO EARWASH? My poor baby's ear is so red... Anyways. They may have the best prices in the neighborhood, when i have to take either of my cats to the vet again, and can afford it, i will be looking elsewhere. read more

I made this account just to review Park Slope Veterinary Center, especially Dr. Szacki and Dr. Hildenbrand. My cat was extremely sick, and losing weight fast. We took him to another vet who looks at him for about 2 minutes, barely even physically touched him for the exam, then just prescribed flagyl and said he'd be fine. After only a four days worsening progress and ever more weight loss (he is a 5.5lb cat, he didn't have much to spare). We called PSVCenter and explained the situation, and they got him in immediately even though he was a new patient. We spent almost an hour there for his exam and tests. Dr. Szacki was extremely thorough, and even found a problem with him no vet ever had. They got him on new medicine, fluid shots for dehydration, and b12 shots for nutrition retention. He almost immediately began getting better. We kept taking him in once a week for the shots and fluids (then eventually every other week). Every time they would take him back, weigh him, test his vitals and give him a mini exam, and every week they only charged for the shots themselves. I never once felt ripped off, I never felt like they were trying to give him things he didn't need to get more money (which has happened in the past before we found this practice). We moved to Colorado, and the vet we were recommended too was a complete rip off. They said he needs an oral surgery that he's had once before and want to charge 4X what we paid the first time. After that we didn't really trust them, especially after seeing his bloodwork and seeing results on it this new vet didn't even mention to us over the phone. We called up PSVC and asked if we sent them his bloodwork if they would mind taking a look at it for us for a second opinion. We promptly got a call back from Dr. Szacki who gave us a completely different reading of the results (mentioning what we noticed) and with a recommendation for care. I wish so much for my cat that we still could go to PSVCenter. I have never felt more comfortable with a vet, felt like my cat was truly cared for and like a vet genuinely cared about my cat. They know who we are when we call, and as soon as we walk in with him they know him. The whole staff, reception, techs, and all are so wonderfully friendly and all are caring and gentle. Sam can be a handle when it comes to testing and exams, and they were always gentle with him and never tried to be forceful with him when he was irritated or upset, like some vets had been in the past. They are always kind and understanding with us as well, realizing that it can be very scary for a pet owner when their pet is sick and sometimes it makes us a little crazy with worrying. They never once made us feel like an annoyance for all the questions we had about his health. Take your vet to PSVCenter if you not only want to receive the highest quality in care for your pet, but a staff that truly cares about the welfare of its patients and communicating with their owners. read more

very kind people but when i got bloodwork done for my cat, i waited almost three days before i missed a call from them, and i was at work. when i called back the receptionist was very short and seemed annoyed i was calling to inquire about the results, and claimed she left a voicemail which i have no record of. i stated i didn't receive it and she waited 30 seconds to say "okay, do you have any questions?" yes!! i want to know his bloodwork results!! i want to know why you're being rude to me! nervous to get my cat's surgery done here if that's how they handle phone calls. hope it works out. read more

We called to make an appointment for our dog Olive as we were aware she probably had an ear infection, something we have dealt with before as her ears are floppy. Upon arrival Olive was taken and seen by a doctor and for the first time told the word "exam." Once Olive had her ears cleaned and was ready to go with her medication at payment there was an extra $60 fee (totaling $150) on there for a doctor exam. Not one conversation until in the room had there been a mention of exam and we were shocked...now for a lot of you rich people this is nothing, but we are young and broke and trying to make it in the city... We asked why we were being charged an exam fee when we only came in to have her ears checked out and get meds, and we were told that that is standard a doctor has to see her in an exam. This isn't the case however, as Olive has had ear problems before and they took her to the back cleaned her up and gave us the meds and charged us just for the cleaning and the meds (roughly $90). I repeat, no words were ever mentioned for exam. As we are money conscious, we would have had to have figured out how to get the extra money before taking her in. After speaking to an employee I was told this is routine, and an argument ensued followed by multiple excuses after I met every claim of hers regarding appointments and how they run. She then proceeds to tell me because I adopted my dog I should be aware there are going to be things needed (DUH) and that I'm making a big deal out of something so small. Today, $60 can mean a lot to different people, and she went on to infer that I am a bad pet owner because I feel there was no clarity on the part of the person who made the appointment. I gladly offered to pay for the ear cleaning and the meds, but she decided to refuse my dog the prescription because I wouldn't pay for something I didn't ask for. That is messed up. NOW SHE IS PUTTING MY DOG'S HEALTH AT RISK. There was miscommunication, misinformation, we were going off of what we had had before. NO "EXAM" FOR AN EAR CHECK. Had someone said she will need the exam we would have tried to figure the extra money part out. But in the mean time my dog doesn't have the meds she needs. That is this woman who I spoke withs fault (and apparently I'm the bad parent...yet she's withholding medication that we were going to pay for). Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but whatever happened to "the customer is always right," and not telling pet owners that they are bad. She should have taken responsibility for the mistake, made it right by allowing us to pay for what we assumed we were getting based on previous experience, and had a conversation with the entire team on how they can be more clear on the phone to customers. I'm taking Olive to a different vet tomorrow. It sucks when you want to support a local business, but the business sucks (maybe the woman I spoke to is just a bad egg). And one more time, $60 means a lot to different people, and I'm not a bad dog parent because I try to make things as affordable as possible for the dog I adopted. Shame on whoever I spoke to. **after reading the comment from the company let's get some things straight. The free exam is provided to any dog adopted from Animal Care Control...while appreciated it wasn't as if you singled me out for free service. And I have paid for service at your place before. The problem is inconsistency. I'm pissed because we take her in one time and it's one price and the next time for the same thing and it's $60 more. And at no point was there ever any talk of seeing a doctor or an exam until it was happening. And you are so demeaning talking about financial restraints. $60 bucks is decent dinner out. It's not a bag of Doritos. There was clearly a miscommunication and inconsistency with policy. Whether it was wrong the first time or right the second time, what matters is we were going off of what service we had previously had. You should have admitted there was a mistake, rectified the situation, and made your team be more clear when booking. I'm not the only one on here to say you try to rip people off. And again, I offered to pay for the services I asked for and you refused to give my dog the medication she needs. That's messed up. Do vets not take the Hippocratic oath, in your case it's the hypocritical oath. Lame joke, but relevant. I obviously know my dog will have bills and I will do whatever it takes to look after her the best I can. I first went here when our neighborhood vet closed about 4 years ago. I started going to a closer vet, though recently returned. Dr. Szacki seems to bring a large body of clinical expertise to her work: if there is a discrepancy between her clinical observations and blood test results, she raises those issues. She discovered that my neighborhood vet had misdiagnosed my cat with kidney disease, and that my cat is actually fine to proceed with the dental work that he needs. (To be fair, I should have done it a year or two ago, but as a working mom, it's actually been 2 1/2 years since I've been to the dentist myself. Partly because my dentist died 1 1/2 years ago. I'm going to a new dentist next week. I promise.) My visit with her cost the same as my visit with my neighborhood vet, but it was much more time-intensive, and I came away understanding all of my options, rather than feeling like there was only one way to proceed, and that she would be making the choices for me. She does seem to charge less for the dental work than my neighborhood vet, and hopefully that will actually be the case. She also has openings to do the dental work, whereas neighborhood vet didn't have openings for more than 2 months. My friend also takes his cat here, and he recommends highly too. The only downside of this vet is transportation: it's 10 blocks away from the subway and parking in the area isn't easy. read more

I've brought my cat here for the past two years for regular check-ups. I've had a few different vets during this time and they've all seemed great. They were professional and took the time to listen to my concerns and answer my questions. Just wanted to leave some appreciation for the team at Park Slope Veterinary Center. I took in a new cat recently, and had to make two stops up to the office to ensure she was healthy and was not going to surprise me down the road with a positive pregnancy test. From the office staff to the vet techs to the other visiting animals, everything was really smooth. Appointments that start on time, knowledgeable team members, and easy free parking in front of the hydrant across the street, the entire process was as smooth as could be. Took our dog Minnee in for a visit because she wasn't getting better. Transferred all paperwork immediately to become primary vet. Staff was awesome. Front desk gal was nothing but exceptional on phone and in person. Vet tech and vet were great. Took time to actually examine the dog, talk me through all issues, and answer all questions. Look forward to bringing Minnee back without hesitation. Really an amazing group of animal lovers !!! read more

I think this might have been the rudest two receptionists I've ever dealt with in my New York career! We have a new baby kitten needing a physical exam and had a free exam certificate from the ACC- they were inflexible by offering me only a few time slots all during work hours and never would call back with any alternatives (after multiple follow up calls). I worry this practice may not care as much about reçues as we did. Too bad, they lost the cutest neighborhood kitten's longtime care to another vet in the neighborhood. read more

I have gone to this Veterinary Clinic for several years and thought everything was fine, until I requested my dog's records, so she could go to the groomer. Not only did they have insufficient records for my dog, they had been treating her without viewing the records they did have. They were unaware they did not have full records for my dog until I requested them to be sent to me. Included in the fee that they charge is accurate record keeping. It is also quite clearly stated in the Veterinary Practice Act that a vet must keep accurate records and have reviewed an animals records before treating them. They tried to blame me for having insufficient records. their negligence is not my fault. While the vets there are nice someone is obviously not doing there due diligence when it come to animal care. Needless to say i am taking both of my pets somewhere else. read more

Not only is this business one that is money hungry and will bill you for breathing too hard in the place, I hate the way they handled my dog. My dog was handled very rough and without care once I brought to their attention that they over charged me for my last 2 visits...Then my dog had to pay. They then refused to release my dogs medical records once I tried to find another vet. This place is HORRIBLE. Please find someone else that truly loves animals and doesn't just put on an act to collect as much money from you as possible. Beware of this place, but I was shocked it even happened. But it did and I will never forget. read more
