The Parr Lumber located on MLK Blvd. in NE Portland is a very helpful, friendly store. We are retired and sent a Care-Giver there to pick up some boards on an emergency basis in November 2025. We expected to pay possibly $80 for the wood we needed to raise my husband's lift-assist recliner up higher to make it easier to get in and out of. The Care-Giver was assisted at NE Parr Lumber by a young man who said they had what was needed in their scrap pile for free! We were surprised and impressed by this service. I come to this Parr location all the time--great customer service and I've never had any issues. Always a solid experience. But this review is really for their new coffee machine. That double espresso option is exactly the pick-me-up you need in the middle of a busy workday. Big shout out to management for adding that! Parr is poor customer service (online/delivery). Would not recommend. Perhaps instore is better - considered giving 2 stars as they have many locations and a decent online interface but the lack of clarity from the online / sales reps is disappointing to say the least. I had a relatively small project--an existing 10' x 10' deck that needed new boards-- and after doing research online, I realized I needed to see my choices in person and talk to someone knowledgeable. Peter L steered me to the exact right material for my job, which also happened to be one of the least expensive, so I immediately trusted him (and it was priced lower than Lowe's or Home D). After considering my choices for several days I returned and was helped by Logan, who was equally knowledgeable and helpful throughout the process, including recommendations for the best fasteners & managing the return of a board that was damaged before delivery (it happens). They comped the board without hassle, even the delivery driver went above and beyond-- at every interaction I felt that really cared about my dinky little project. I had exactly the right materials and the perfect amount. I will definitely come back, and save myself all of the research online beforehand because I trust that they'll point me in the right direction. read more

The difference between getting building materials here or Home Depot and Lowe's is the actual assistance you will receive. Great information on products. Fast service. I'm always happily surprised by the amount of building accessories they stock. In a entire house build I only had to travel to another Parr (other than MLK) twice; once Rockwood, once NW Portland. They're not really set up for homeowners and selling small quantities of materials. As much as I'd like to be able to buy the odd board in the neighborhood, Parr just isn't that place. Need hardware? These guys decided to park and block a major street in West Seattle putting both my safety and my kids at risk. These guys had plenty of pace to park near the construction (pending the white truck moved who was also on site). When I explained to the driver they cannot park here he said he wasn't but clearly in this picture he was, as he was not in the truck, facing the wrong direction and unloading wood. Getting the job done shouldn't mean putting others at risk. read more

Avoid Parr lumber entirely, Parr lumber company has always had the worst service possible, I am a larger company that has been in this industry for 38 years. There is not enough space here for me to explain how bad Parr is. From flat out rude at the counter to yard workers telling our guys to load their own material, answering the phone with a "What the F do you want!! Telling us that we are unreasonable for expecting Parr to give us exactly what we paid for, example we ordered black window and doors on a project, they sent white with many pieces broken, there response was we can paint them for you and give you a small credit for the broken windows and when I declined that ridiculous offer they got mad and tried blaming us for their mistake, weeks later we still do not have the very expensive windows and doors that I have paid for and Parr is not trying to be helpful at all in Fact they are going out of their way to be overly rude and refusing to give us information on the reorder of product that we paid for long ago. I buy approx. 400K in windows a year although I do not buy lumber Parr I gave them a shot at our window and door business and it was a huge mistake. Our company and our employees will never ever do business with Parr. Parr acts like a bully and their management backs that up, An area manager name Levi told me personally they could care less about our business, he was upset that I told him about their bad service and that we spend a million plus dollars at the best lumber company in town - Pacific Lumber Co. These facts are not something new this has been Parr's MO for the past 20 years and unfortunately it has gotten worse. Levi the Manager reminded me that Parr is a giant in this area without apology which was more of a threat then a fact. Parr does not exemplify the NW well at all. Stop shopping at Parr Lumber, notable mention for the absolute worst attitude and service is Jim Noblet at the 185th Parr store along with area manager Levi who refused to give his last name which is always a bad sign. read more

After spending 7k for siding order I decided to try them again. Put in lumber order for 2x and 4x decking frame for 3k and stored the lumber for a couple months in dry covered location. When job started up I started with what looked like decent lumber. About half way through the stack I noticed that a lot of the lumber was warped and twisted and cracked/splitting. Also noted concrete mix staining the second half of my order. I did not order cement and wood was obviously from another work site. When I called and talked to Ray he said I stored it incorrectly. Not accounting for the fact that they sent me returned crap. Never again. A little customer service would have gone a long way. read more

Note: the only reason I'm giving 4 stars is because of my experience with Jennifer. I live just a few blocks away, so I'm up at Parr quite a bit, usually on Saturday. The guys there on the weekends are always helpful, efficient and laid back. I recently went there on a weekday, though and, wow, what a testosterone fest! One guy asked me if I was "getting my little flower garden started." Ugh. I was relieved to have the pleasure of being helped by the ONE woman who works there. She was great. Even when one of her work mates condescended to her when she asked a question about the wheel barrows, she stayed professional. You go, girl. I wouldn't be able to hang in there all day. Anyway, if I go on a week day again, I'll look out for Jennifer. Looking at all the reviews, they clearly have a customer service problem. I wonder when they'll stop apologizing, and start actually firing some of the a-holes that work there? read more

This company has the world's worst employee's. They are so rude I don't know how they do business. Parr deliveryman was blocking my house and driveway and parked dead center of the street. I asked why he couldn't park closer to the house he was delivering to so I could pull into my driveway he was two houses away from the delivery house. Wow. I can't express how disappointing this place was. Be warned, that customer service here is unacceptable and incredibly unprofessional. We understand how folks make mistakes, everybody is human. But when we as the customer get yelled at about someone else's mistake, that's when things become a problem. We were charged with the incorrect type of wooden planks for our order. While the load was being cut and brought to our van we realized this error and notified staff. We noticed this after the fact that the wood had been cut and placed in our van. This was not what we ordered, and when we expressed this we were berated by staff and eventually the manager of this location. We were especially surprised with how the manager expressed their frustration with the already cut planks- which again, were not what we ordered. Customers have very little control of how orders are placed at this store. we don't know the codes on the receipts and we rely on staff to help enter the info correctly and guide us into figuring out how to support our projects. We were willing to pay extra for cutting the planks for our order as well. Yet when we realize the mistake it was as if we were supposed to apologize for this error? We do not recommend this place, ever. read more

Before you cuss me out for my 2 star rating, let me explain myself. Just went for a good broom, shovel. The selection of wasn't that big. Part of my 2 star rating probably goes to my cashier, that left me feeling my $50 spent and time was a waste of his; just a cold, whatever attitude. I don't have much patience for bad customer service. I'm trying to get new external doors, and 4 new windows. In the MLK store there's only ever one person around to help and they're slammed, so I end up waiting forever and leaving. So I called to get quotes twice and never heard back either time. So I tried another location (Hillsboro) and got a quote but she forgot something so I emailed and called and never got another response. Additionally she was really not very friendly. She was really short with me and made me feel dumb when I stalled when she asked for the jam size. Sorry, not all of us order doors every day. My family has been a customer since about 1950-51 as I can recall my Father buying lumber here for various projects when it was located in the industrial area under or about the St John's Bridge somewhere down by the Willamette river? I just had an great experience at my local Parr (NW 19th, Portland) with a gentleman in "the yard". Tyler (the gent in question) directed me towards the correct wood for my particular project - a gardening table based on a folding table base. Tyler then cut lengths of the recommended cedar (NOT the pretty knotty pine my inexperienced crafting mind thought would look amazing) to my very specific order, made a couple of other recommendations and capped it all off by offering Parr's delivery service since I showed up on my E-Vespa. As a local homeowner and inveterate crafter, Tyler's insights were imperative towards the success of my project. I highly recommend both Tyler and Parr on NW 19th. read more

Holier than thou Counter help and Tough Guys in the Yard Parr lumber needs a serious attitude adjustment. The Customer sometimes needs help at the counter with measurements, not attitude because they don't rattle off the measurements as fast as you'd like. The yard help attitude is worse than the counter. Not a comfortable place. I live around the corner and have been here four times while working on a whole house remodel, testing the water to see if I want to shift my business to Parr. I am about to start another house renovation and will not buy any supplies at Parr. I'll drive 5 miles rather than put up with these guys. We went to the windows and doors show-room to look at options for our remodel project. While the space itself was nice enough with a good assortment of window and doors on display, we were very disappointed with the customer service. We drove 30 minutes out to this location to have someone guide us through our options (brand, material, colors, hardware etc) so we could place an order. Unfortunately we got very minimal guidance and were essentially handed the catalogs and told to look through them and call in with our order. I didn't drive all the way to the showroom to get brochures that are available online. We will be ordering our windows elsewhere. read more

I went to Parr to purchase wood for a project for my Girl Scout troop. The first day, I didn't know what I needed, but the warehouse staff was helpful and patient. I had to return after doing a bit more research on what we would need. As soon as I walked in, Jen helped me immediately and walked me through many options to try to fit my budget and to make our project last as long as possible in the Oregon rainy weather. Jen was knowledgeable and fast, even getting me to work on time with the perfect wood for our project! Thank you to Jen and her manager for making this project affordable and fun! And special thanks to Jen for making herself available for future project with my Girl Scouts. I was just trying to buy a gift card. And no one knew how to do the transaction. The mgr refused to help because he was too busy loading a truck. It was more the attitude of not wanting to help a customer that was so disappointing. I will never return to this store. Recommend you avoid it too. Update: I am following up my previous review to report that I received a phone call and very sincere apology letter from the store manager. One star, because at least they were nice and told me to have a good day. Did I get answers to my questions, nope! But they are VERY good at sending you on a wild goose chase and delegating for other personnel to help only to be not helped at all! Will never go back there again. Couldn't get prices, couldn't see material without a big ordeal, and their website is just as vague. My impression is that they cater to contractors. Update: The manager of the Parr on MLK called me today about delivery time & guessed that this yelp review was mine. He apologized for difficulty buying wood yesterday & said Parr is working to improve customer service. Original review: I read the yelp reviews indicating that service can be poor & difficult at this Parr location before I went there. However I went there anyhow because it is conveniently close to my house & because I knew exactly what I needed - had list from my handyperson in hand. I managed to purchase the $300 worth of lumber I needed but only after a trying, unpleasant experience with the guy at the counter that struck me as perhaps rooted in deep sexism. From the first moment he acted as if he believed this female homeowner could not possibly know what she needs. He was very skeptical about my ability to order wood, so he managed to make it as difficult as possible. Small example: I asked for 2" by 12" cedar, and he responded with a perplexed look that they don't carry that. I had to finally state, "Look, I know that the dimensions of lumber are a half inch or so smaller than the names. So do you have 1.5" by 11.5" perhaps?" Oh yes, he confessed, they carry that. And it just went on & on like that (maybe other women will know this type of treatment). I really suspected he didn't want to sell wood to me. I wound up not getting everything I needed because it was so difficult communicating with that contemptuous man. He seemed relieved & surprised -- sort of like 'gee it wasn't impossible dealing with HER!' -- when we FINALLY completed what should have been a brief, simple transaction. read more

The apartment is turning over this month, and we needed to replace the screen on the bedroom exit window. I knew that our contractor had purchased the windows at Parr lumber because I had kept the receipt. I called Parr in North Portland and told them of my problem and was connected to Steve Willis. Steve took the time to get me a quote for replacing that screen. What made Steve exceptional is the patient, kind, and compassionate way he handled my request - a request that others might have considered a nuisance and an unwanted interruption to their already busy day. His attitude and follow through for a $16.50 window screen replacement was impressive. read more

I pulled in and waited at the sign "please wait here for service" and was approached by someone whose first words were "first time here? Thought so." I had JUST pulled up! He directed me to go inside and place my order and bring him the paper and he would fill it. I did so, with a sarcastic counter clerk.
