Cat presence always gets extra points from me. We were seated on the large shaded outdoor patio, and we were the only customers there. It was late in the day and I guess the midday rush had all just vacated at once. Our server was really great at describing the winemaking process, flavor profiles and history of the winery, but the patio was completely silent. We took out a phone to play our own music and she commented that her mother did the same thing when she visits. Dining experiences need music! If they're aware of this, I hope they consider adding some soft music for a more comfortable ambiance. Wines - All of the wines here are natural, which not many wineries can claim in this area, and I tasted some very unique blends like nothing I've tasted before. My favorite was the Syrah, but the rest of the wines weren't really my style. Food - The menu is changed regularly and it's obvious that the chef enjoys putting it together! We didn't get to try the ramen that my friend raved about because of the new menu, but we loved the mini "street taco" tostada and the spam maki. I did think some dishes would have been better served hot, like the orange-glazed chicken thigh. Justin, the tasting room lead, is knowledgeable but far from snooty. On a quiet weekday afternoon, he spent a long time with us -- we explored a wide range of whites and red (and one rose). Some of our favorites: Chardonnay Napa Valley, Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard Carneros (I don't drink Chards and really enjoyed this one), Cabernet Angels Vista, Cabernet Lameraux. I was here in the morning so it was freezing cold out. I'd recommend for a morning tasting, bring a jacket or something (I was there in May). But as the morning neared its end, the sun warmed things up. My wine guy brought some crackers also as I was feeling a bit queasy from guzzling wine so early. Nice touch and prevented the hallways from looking like "The Shining" too. I also enjoyed watching and playing with Cheetoh, the cat who hung around the outside. He was pretty chill and friendly. He followed my wine guy around and let me pet him (the cat, not the wine guy). I'm glad I went and was upfront about why I was there. I think he appreciated it too and he did change my mind about DAOU. I get that it's a business so you gotta sell to the masses, but make some of these others available to us common folk. We chose to sit outside where we could view some vineyards across the street. Of the 3 wineries we visited, this is the only one where they brought the wine tastings to us rather than doing the tasting standing at the bar. It made for a more relaxing experience in my opinion, and our group was able to talk and eat the charcuterie board with enough space on the table. The tasting was quite generous, and at the end of the tasting, the owner asked us if we wanted any additional tastes of anything which was a really nice touch. I also really enjoyed hearing the owner's story and which grapes they grow and where they grow on the property.
