The prices are comparable to the big box stores nearby but you can't beat the feeling of knowing you're helping out a small business instead of a corporation. You can find Cherry's located on N. Broadway a mile or so north of 410 in a shopping center... north side of the center facing the street and up the stairs. They have way more room for all their costumes and accessories... it's all spread out! They are excited with the expansion and hope that you will come in to see them! I was introduced to Cherry at an event we were both at several years ago. We have common friends. Since then, I have stopped at her store every so often to see how she is doing. If anyone knew Cherry, they would understand that she is getting older with family and health issues... and she is/was not running a typical run of the mill business. If you were in a shop alone working and sewing inventory, you might understand her wanting appointments instead of walk-ins. Cherry now is enjoying her retirement while her son Christian is taking charge and holding up the reins to carry on! Cherry's Costumes Galore does have a lot of older vintage costumes they carefully restore. It's amazing to have someone who loves textiles so much to take on this challenge! I didn't get a chance to look at everything but having this huge building, it sure does help you get a chance to see more of what there is to choose from. Let Christian or Amanda help you out! For the standard shipping cost, it appeared I would receive the item in time, but FF offered to call me back after placing the order to discuss a faster option (not an expedited service). Half of the main room is board games and accessories for sale, and the other is massive tabletop space to play said games. Every seat was packed when I went, about 8pm on a Tuesday, and the energy was infectious. It was noisy with excited customers playing games together and staff members were dressed like they were at the Renaissance Faire. I saw at least three private rooms to rent out for gaming, and I was surprised to learn that they also have a scullery?? The food looked and smelled AMAZING. I will note that there were not as many cards as I'd hoped, but that doesn't negate everything this place has going for it. I worked here for several months, and my experience ended in a way that I feel reflects poorly on…read moremanagement. To be fair, I was on my phone during a slow period, and I understand that management has the right to address that. I accept responsibility for it and would have been willing to have a professional conversation about my mistake. Instead, the situation became personal. During the discussion, I mentioned that I was stressed about finances, including a roughly $3,000 car repair, which was why I was on my phone. As someone making $12 an hour, that is a significant financial burden. Rather than acknowledging that, I was essentially told that my stress didn't matter because the owner has much larger financial responsibilities, including business debt and payroll expenses. I understand that running a business is stressful. However, stress is not a competition. Just because an owner has larger expenses does not mean an employee's financial struggles are insignificant. For someone earning $12 an hour, a major unexpected expense can be devastating. What bothered me most was being told to "grow up" and hearing comments along the lines of, "We'll see how you feel financially when I start cutting your hours and you see it in your paycheck." That felt less like coaching and more like a threat. Employees should be able to make mistakes, receive correction, and move forward without being belittled or having their financial concerns mocked. My issue was never being held accountable for being on my phone. My issue was the lack of professionalism, empathy, and respect shown during that conversation. I believe employees deserve to be treated with dignity, regardless of their position or income level. I should also add I have a literal broken ankle currently, and was still opening/closing and performing daily duties. This is how I was treated.
