I came here for first time today, because I live nearby and was craving fried fish. I really liked it, and according to the reviews I didn't even get the good stuff. The red snapper was very salty and fishy, but once a little bit of their homemade tartar sauce was added, it was delicious. Lunch specials are a lot of good food for a very good price. (5.75 for 3 pieces of fish, two sides and a slice of bread.) I also bought a sweet potato pie which was really good. The fish was at best medicore and the service was awful... the 2 ladies worcin the counter had no idea of what they were doing. As a kitchen professional who has cooked for 18+ yrs... I am mad at myself for being lazy and allowing my taste buds to be assaulted by their fish... The fish was suspect from the beginning sitting water in the case is never a great sign... It took me over a 45min to get my food. It only takes 7 minutes to fry fish. Their tartar sauce is no more than white distilled vinegar, sugar , and relish for color.... I had my food.. big ups to him... white shirt blacc pants with white stripes... My yams was cold and over all my food was at best mediocre... my snapper had bones yo yo.... need to season a bit more... and the fish in case is not fresh it is frozen fresh fish... you tell by the amount of excess water and lacc of taste of the fish itself. MAGGOT FISH MEAT! First of all, the attitudes were rude and inappropriate when placing my phone number. When I had picked my order up. I had asked several times if everything was in the box...the lady had stated that my order was complete and everything was in my box....with an attitude. Unfortunately, when I returned home with my order, I noticed that the order was missing the French fries that I ordered, I had also ordered a 1/2 pound of sand dab and had only 2 pieces in the box. As I made a plate for myself, I kept smelling a rotten smell...the smell had a fleshy rotten maggot Snell to it. I picked up a piece of sand dab and smelled it and sure enough it was coming from the two pieces of sand dab! It was the worse smell ever! I felt like vomiting. I had immediately called them to let them know that not only was I overcharged $75.04 for this order, but my French fries were missing, the red rooster hot sauce I purchased was expired, discolored and had a chunky like formation from being, but mist importantly the two pieces that represented a half pound was rotten and was forming maggots! The lady who had initially placed the order hadctold me to come back. Which I did and I was absolutely DISGUSTED! Not just from biting into rotten maggot meat but also disgusted by their careless attitude if not wanting to discard the case of sand dab out of the case. Their negligence and carelessness could cost someone great illness. When I told her to smell it, she refused. Then there was a man who came out from the kitchen and asked what is the problem. I stated the issue. I told him to smell it ....he did. He didn't apologize or give any explanation. He just threw it in the trash and walked back into the kitchen. When I had made the suggestion for him to throw out the rest of the sand dab that was also rotten in the case...he just turned his back and proceeded to cook more maggot meat. Then he gestured for the lady behind the register. They talked and then she opened the register to refund $8.65! Of which I had paid $75.04. Still, no apology or reasoning or explanation whatsoever! They are still going to serve up rotten fish to other customers regardless of it being rotten and spoiled! I was shocked and in disbelief that they would not even try to check to see if the other fish was bad. They just left it there to serve it up to the next upcoming victims....NASTY. this experience have helped me to go from being vegetarian to vegan...that was the only positive attribute that I gained from this horrible experience. As soon as I made it back home, I took something to aid my nausea and to try and cleanse my body from any bacteria from digesting the very small bite that I did partake in.....BEWARE!!! soul food is the food of my childhood and in my early adult years away from my parents, living on my own it became one of my primary home-away-from-home comforts. the small town that i am from has a couple of roadside shack kinda places where you can get a to-go box packed full of fried chicken or oxtails or fried catfish with delicious sides for a steal and the pasadena fish market is in many ways a lot like those places except it's a little bit less of a shack.. but only a little! my newly no-longer-vegan friend and i went by here on 6/23 and we were very pleased with our experience in general. another friend of mine was in atlanta for the day and had been torturing me with pictures of the epic meal he was eating at an atlanta soul food joint... some searching around yelp led me to the pasadena fish market and we headed up there. we both ordered a fried catfish filet dinner with collard greens, macaroni and cheese and hushpuppies. the portion of catfish is HUGE. between the two of us we had 12 large strips of catfish. pretty impressive and neither of us got more than halfway through it in spite of stuffing ourselves. with beverages the total was about 23 dollars. a really good deal for a plate of food that is both delicious and comforting. macaroni and cheese was pretty good as well. it is a gooey southern style mac and cheese with the over cooked pasta and crusty edge parts. delicious. the collard greens seemed like they were more cabbage than collards but they tasted good. i would probably order something else next time. i like my collards smokey and not blended with other greens. like the other reviewers said-- there is basically no ambiance to speak of but there is an eating area with tables and we did stay to eat out of our takeout boxes. we were too hungry to wait and eating there and talking was fine. when we were getting into our car the owner came outside and handed us two menus-- inviting us to call in an order anytime. i will be back for sure. read more

The food here is pretty good. I ordered two dishes to-go: First was the grilled salmon with macaroni and cheese and fried okra on the side. I initially wanted to order the yams and corn on the side since so many other reviewers had been raving about them, but unfortunately they were out for the day. The second dish was orange roughy with rice and steamed cabbage. The salmon and sides were good, and I was really impressed with the orange roughy! The only cons are that this restaurant is in a rough park in Pasadena, and the food takes a long time to come out. I disagree with the other reviews suggesting that the owners "revamp" the place. This place has UNBELIEVABLE mac and cheese. Seriously. I will go back just to eat it again. That said, it's a little bit of a sketchy place. Seems like a weird place for a fish market. I called on the phone and said I had around $20 to spend and to my delight, received enough catfish filets to easily feed 4 adults, and had a side order of potato salad to boot. The total came to around $25.00, and I like the fact that they take credit cards! The batter was quite tasty, not too salty, and the food was perfectly cooked. I must say, it was quite a relief, since I had gone to another soul food restaurant in the area recently, and ordered what I thought was supposed to be a large seafood combo, that came to $27, and it did not have nearly the amount of fish that this place provides, and felt like I got ripped off (and they had the audacity to serve cold cornbread muffins-like out the fridge cold). The order came in a large box that was pretty full. I doubt if I could have went to the grocery store and fried all that fish myself and got a potato salad for $25.00. I was quite pleased with my order and recommend this place for anyone that wants a quick fish dinner, or just a la carte, since they serve good portions, unlike some of the other local eateries that charge way too much for food that isn't nearly as tasty, and it is piping hot and fresh. read more

After various visits to this fish market it's time to write a review. I am a so cal regular, I average to place orders to go about 4 + times a months and I always order- a pound a cat fish strips, a pound of medium shrimp and sometimes sandabs, and a small order of fries. The food here is always consistent what was not at one point consistent was how much I was being charged for the same amount of food at time. Meaning sometime I was over charged for lack of communication within the staff but I was able to keep up with the prices and worked things out with the register lady. My last couple of orders have been on top and the prices have also been on top. I do recommend this fish market to any one who is looking to have some fresh catfish, and shrimp.
